Love all the tips! And the struggles & laziness is very relatable... About the pockets: don't sew the pocket sides to each other - instead attach each side of the pocket to each skirt part, like ears, then sew from the top of the skirt, around the ear and down to the hem - all in one swoop !! highly recommended
yes! the ear trick. also, go back and sew an extension of the side seam up into the pocket opening a few inches, and that will create a bit of a side and a deeper pocket so stuff doesn't fall out.
Let me trade you this tip for your thrifted linen curtain tip. When you need to measure the length for a skirt, use your tape measure upside down. Lower the number 1 down your leg until it gets to the length you want. Then the number you need to read for the length is up around your waist somewhere. Took me more than your 40 years to work that out 🤣 Your dress came out lovely!
Yes! Finally another sewing person that actually talks like me during a project. Hey, the dress looks great but I see what ya did there, hiding the waist with a belt. Classic me move ;)
Love, I’m 64, been sewing for 50 of those years…..I always keep my seam ripper , or 2 or 3 of them handy as I always need it frequently!! Just a fact of sewing! When you come to terms with it’s o”k to make mistakes” it becomes relaxing! Secrets of life…
Thanks for being so REALISTIC sewing!!!! Your faces reminded me of mine when trying the product in front of the mirror hahaha. Sometimes I cry big tears of despair and blame fashion magazines!!!!!!!
About three weeks ago, I was at a fabric store and in the clearance bin there were a bunch of linen shower curtains for $5 dollars. Since I have a glass door shower, I walked away and didn't bother with them. THAT WAS A BIG MISTAKE !!! I wish I could turn back the time. This dress turned out absolutely beautiful and thank you for sharing your idea. I will never look at linen shower curtain the same way again.
AHHHH! Small confession: I've totally regretted not buying something at the thrift store then rushing back at opening the next morning before someone else could grab it. I may have a problem
I have found them twice and each time I think my heart skipped MANY beats. I felt like I got away with something. I just recently found linen bedsheets! Like...what is this world?!?
They are out there. Sometimes tricky to find and ascertain if they are linen or just linen- like, but keep checking. Maybe tell a friend to look for you too.
Linen is just a wonderful fiber. Thrifting is a little-known source for acquiring fabrics. I frequent the Goodwill for old bedlinens for quilting projects. The style, color, fit of this dress are all spot-on. You created a beauty. Good for you!!!!!!
Just came across this video.. love it! You're humor is great and the dress came out so well!.. and I love the use of thrifted fabric. I'm a big fan of using King sized flat sheets ( in 100% cotton ) for my sewing projects and think this dress like this made with an organic cotton (or a linen blend) would be lovely!
oh my goodness - you made me laugh out loud so many times- you are so funny. I love your presentation style!! Love the dress too - I want to make one as well. It is such a sophisticated style - very chic!!
I absolutely love this dress. I would have liked to see it without the belt. Because I am a size 12, liked the drop waist with a midi length. Now that I am retired, you have given me the incentive to get out my sewing machine and make some great linen dresses. Love your video and and your terrific sense of humor. Thanks for sharing, glad I found you.
I rewatched this video as I am still planning to make this dress - or should I say re-try as I made it once and there were so many problems with it starting with the scourge of sewers - starting without enough fabric!! It ended up too short and just didn't sit right so I think I will try again. After watching the video again and laughing out loud at your wonderful sense of humour I thought I would just drop a note to say how delightful your humour is then laughed again when I saw that as the previous comment was me too! Gosh that year went fast :)
I think it turned out great. Your linen seems a little heavier than the inspiration which would have made a circle skirt too heavy for yours so, it is great the way it is.
They are both FABULOUS. Yours is the winner imo because theirs was made by a team of professionals so it's SUPPOSED to look great, but you're an amateur using thrift and $6.00 and it looks every bit as good 👍🏾
You sew like me. I just kind of wing it. I usually make my own patterns too. I have been sewing for years, but still learning. Definitely confident in it. I absolutely love that style of dress. I think in the 1940's they call it a House Dress or a Summer Dress.
Loved this funny take you have on making stuff, the dress turned out awesome and all I keep thinking of the finished product and styling is "CLAIRE FRASER"!! IN LOVE !
When I sew pockets I attach each piece to the skirt panel. Then I sew the side seam, including going around the pocket. Hope that makes sense. Great dress I need to find some linen!
Great tip! I've done that too when I've actually planned ahead. But of course I didn't plan that far ahead this time (which unfortunately happens more often than not).
I watched your video and have just subscribed. I am getting out my sewing machine after a million years, because you have inspired me to try again. Thank you.
Fun listen. Love that you're using those linen curtains. I'm always looking for old linen table cloths because they usually are soft. I am into dyeing yarn and fiber so I'd probably dye them too. Thanks for a great creation. You're very good. I'm not that great at sewing. Sewed a skirt in HS home ec a million years ago. Found a tiny Japanese sewing machine at the GW outlet store. My local shop said he can tune it up. Thanks again for the inspiration!
I eventually switched the skirt for a gored/pleated one only because the one in this video just didn't have good movement. It was a good lesson on the differences.
I'm about to journey into the world of sewing linen dresses for myself, looking to learn, and your video popped up. The dress is beautiful and flattering. You did a great job. And you are hilarious! I'm all about the recycling/resourcing thrift for new clothes. So much fun to explore. I've been sewing for...40+ years, with a couple near decade breaks in between. Have sewn many side seam pockets... (Great idea on the "support strip")...But I feel your pain in finishing neckline and armhole edges in bias tape. Have done many--and ripped out many. Even just this last week, after trying so hard to keep it straight and have a professional finish. The torment!! Lol. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love!💗 I’ve been finding beautiful linen sheets at thrift and discount shops; thrilled. I’m a total newb to sewing but did make a kaftan from one sheet that I’m happy with. I may have to tackle this pretty dress cuz, obsessed 🤩. Thanks for sharing ❤
Your dress came out lovey. Great tip on using bottom hem to avoid having to do it yourself. I do this also. I to am reacquainting myself with sewing after a friend gave me her amazing vintage singer.
One word: Pockets. I was part of a sewing group of older ladies....I'm so talented, , I was allowed to iron...but then not iron because unskilled. They let me bring dessert & glue paper-quilts. I don't eat sugar and Mae+double stick tape =comedy. These ladies are a fabulous tribe of crusty, salty, graciousn generous bad-booty prairie folk....and sweetly protective. I put you on the list of gentle-folk that shod be loved-up, encouraged, protected & fed dessert while an unskilled peasant offers to iron your fabric or glue tiny nibblets of paper to bigger pieces of paper...at sewing bee. In other news, Huzzah! Keep sewing vanquisher of thine pocketestesses!
I so enjoyed this video in so many ways 💖 Great that you upcycled curtains! I love your attitude, you made me laugh several times, I can so relate to it all. So thanks a million for sharing and I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve 😂 subscribed 👍
Love the dress 🙌. You are so much fun to watch, happy to see I’m not the only one buying thrifted curtains to make clothes. It’s great to see each stage of the make even the tricky bits that drive you insane. Have subscribed and surprised you don’t have more. Many thanks, looking forward to seeing more of your videos 🤩🥰
You making this dress from curtains reminds me of Scarlet O'Hara making that green dress from velvet curtains in "Gone with the Wind" ❤❤👍😍😍💃 and she still bagged the man😂😂
Wow! Your dress is simply beautiful! And, I love all of the design decisions that you made when your project was going well, and when it was not. Also, it was nice to hear your realistic choice of words when you needed to express yourself/vent! I will watch again when I find some Linen fabrics.
I am saving this video, because this dress looks like it could resolve all my roblems with "too tight to put on" and "too loose to look good" in one swoop. I mean, why didn't I though about just wraping it around me?! Thank you! Also, that colour looks absolutly amazing on you and for some reason, seeing you in this dress on snow got me some giant viking vibes. You rock!
I love it! I shop at thrift stores and buy curtains or bed sheets for like $3 or 4 and I make reversible wrap dresses from a Simplicity pattern, vintage looking but I love the idea of being able to quick change if I drop food or a mark gets on my clothing. I have made two so far, one from curtains and one from bed sheets. Nothing ventured nothing gained, right?

"Who ever said sewing was a calm activity...can suck it." I subscribed right away, you are my kind of person.
I feel the same way, my kind of person
Let me trade you this tip for your thrifted linen curtain tip.

Took me more than your 40 years to work that out 🤣
Your dress came out lovely!
Genius! I'll do this from now on!
That cotton tape pocket trick is probably the smartest thing I've ever seen
Right?!? I use it with EVERYTHING now
Yes! Finally another sewing person that actually talks like me during a project. Hey, the dress looks great but I see what ya did there, hiding the waist with a belt. Classic me move ;)
Use ALL THE WORDS!! And belts!
Not even 5 minutes in the video and i already like your vibe, very real and practical : subscribed ✅️
Same.
+1
Love the vibe, sub'd!!😁❤
Same. 2 mins in and subbed.
Your commentary on the pockets was so humorous! The dress came out fab!
I think we all fell on the floor laughing at that moment when she said "what do we say if it doesn't work out first time........" :)
Sewing is the most frustrating and yet most satisfying hobby!!
About three weeks ago, I was at a fabric store and in the clearance bin there were a bunch of linen shower curtains for $5 dollars. AHHHH! Small confession: I've totally regretted not buying something at the thrift store then rushing back at opening the next morning before someone else could grab it. I may have a problem
This week I learned the benefits of wearing linen and sewing curtain fabric is a perfect idea
I'm laughing so hard! This is definitely me, when I sew; sometimes I get so frustrated that I take a nap!
I love anger naps!
I am watching this in bed and laughed out loud with your commentary about the pockets. Almost woke my husband. Lol I have so been there also.
Ahh!! I've done that too. My poor husband!
Fab job
What a great dress! Your comments sound a LOT like what goes through my head with every sewing project :)
It’s a beautiful dress!nicely done, and such a perfect fabric shoice.
I have NEVER seen linen curtains! I'll keep looking. You did a great job on the dress
I have found them twice and each time I think my heart skipped MANY beats. I felt like I got away with something.

I love the chunky belt with your dress. I always feel like I’ve hit the lottery when I find linen at the thrift.

I'm a big fan of using King sized flat sheets ( in 100% cotton ) for my sewing projects and think this dress like this made with an organic cotton (or a linen blend) would be lovely!
I have done the same for Years! Love it😊
I love your attitude. I say those things frequently. Most of the time only when sewing.
oh my goodness - you made me laugh out loud so many times- you are so funny. I love your presentation style!! Love the dress too - I want to make one as well. It is such a sophisticated style - very chic!!
GAH, thank you!! It's definitely a passion project!
I absolutely love this dress. I would have liked to see it without the belt. Because I am a size 12, liked the drop waist with a midi length.

Love your video and and your terrific sense of humor. Thanks for sharing, glad I found you.
Well, in just 5 min of watching your videos for the first time ...you are my favorite sewing RUclipsr now :D
That's lovely. Nicer than original dress
Instant subscribe after the pockets thing. This is my sewing group

No that's what I call being Creative. Well done!
I think it turned out great. Your linen seems a little heavier than the inspiration which would have made a circle skirt too heavy for yours so, it is great the way it is.
Love the video! You have a great sense of humor and linen ROCKZ!!!
They are both FABULOUS. Yours is the winner imo because theirs was made by a team of professionals so it's SUPPOSED to look great, but you're an amateur using thrift and $6.00 and it looks every bit as good 👍🏾
This is so sweet! I love your perspective!
You sew like me. I just kind of wing it. I usually make my own patterns too. I have been sewing for years, but still learning. Definitely confident in it. I absolutely love that style of dress. I think in the 1940's they call it a House Dress or a Summer Dress.
Your energy is the vibe I need to sew and I love the idea about the phone as a way to measure pockets!❤
You did a great job!
you are brilliant! funny, real and one of my favourite topics SEWING!!!
Loved this funny take you have on making stuff, the dress turned out awesome and all I keep thinking of the finished product and styling is "CLAIRE FRASER"!! IN LOVE !
Genius! I am now looking for linen curtains. Your commentary during the pockets is my inner dialogue the entire time I sew anything as well! 😂
Your bodice & sleeves fit so good, that draft of bodice is what I need to learn
I'm still struggling with bodices. I'll get it eventually but it's TOUGH!
Omg lol the music - HILARIOUS, your vibe and tone - AMAZING. Going to try this dress asap. Thank you so much ❤️
It's not just your mother, I think you're fabby and love your style! Go you. Looking forward to your other videos.
Dang girl, you are kinda who I am aspiring to be! You're making 40 look like a good time! I totally dig your realness and thrifty style. Yaaaaaa
I love your sewing reality! That’s how most of my projects go. Nice to see someone else struggle 😊
This turned out so great!
Yes, and Also make the pockets taller so they reach the top of the skirt and then you don’t need to add support tape to them.
I watched your video and have just subscribed. I am getting out my sewing machine after a million years, because you have inspired me to try again. Thank you.
Do it!! We're here to support your endeavors!
Your commentary as a whole was amazing! I love the dress!

The pleats are awesome. Much prettier than the circle skirt, in my opinion.
Whole project was a win.
I eventually switched the skirt for a gored/pleated one only because the one in this video just didn't have good movement. It was a good lesson on the differences.
Absolutely fabulous.
I laughed so hard when you were sewing the pockets 😄
This turned out beautiful! And I loved your commentary on making it!
Beautiful! Maybe someday I can do the same. Color is great on you.
I like how your wrap dress turned out. I also really like the sleeves. Nice sew.👏👏👏
Came for the linen sewing tutorial, stayed for the commentary!
I'm so glad the algorithm brought me here. Love your style and commentary. For sure just shared this with another sewing friend.
Love the Irish vibe and the saucy attitude. Oh, and the dress!!

My favorite reply when people like my clothes is "Thanks! It used to be a curtain!" 🤣 Welcome to the crew!
You making this dress from curtains reminds me of Scarlet O'Hara making that green dress from velvet curtains in "Gone with the Wind" ❤❤👍😍😍💃 and she still bagged the man😂😂
I think another curtain dress is in my future!!
I too have been wanting one of these for a while! I absolutely love this video and the music is awesome. Keep it up!
Greetings from Greece.Really nice.Thanks
Welcome!! And thank you!
Im like finally, someone other than myself has fuck it moments when sewing. I loved every part of your videos, look forward to seeing more.
Yeah, that's me every 15 minutes or so when I'm working on a project. Usually followed by "what's the worst that could happen? 🤷"
@@KatieMakesStuff its that whole throwing caution to the wind and hoping for the best type scenario. Love it.
I really enjoyed this make, looks great!
Thank you SO MUCH!! It was super fun to make!
Wow! Your dress is simply beautiful! And, I love all of the design decisions that you made when your project was going well, and when it was not.
Also, it was nice to hear your realistic choice of words when you needed to express yourself/vent! I will watch again when I find some Linen fabrics.
Love your video and your wrap dress.
Fabric tablecloths are also a great source for large yardage.
I am saving this video, because this dress looks like it could resolve all my roblems with "too tight to put on" and "too loose to look good" in one swoop. I mean, why didn't I though about just wraping it around me?! Thank you!

I'm living for Viking vibes!
Really pretty.
