MADAME WEB Movie Review (NO Spoilers!) | Dakota Johnson | Sydney Sweeney | Marvel

- We're back from scouring the jungles of Peru for powerful spiders to bring you this review of "Madame Web." The Spider-Man spin-off has been getting savaged critically, but we didn't think it was terrible in our spoiler-free review, and that mostly has to do with Dakota Johnson's amusingly blasé performance. As New York City paramedic Cassie Webb, she becomes the reluctant protector of three teenage girls when her clairvoyant abilities show her that a wealthy villain is out to get them. It's kind of a mess, but it's breezy. Directed and co-written by S.J. Clarkson from a script by Claire Parker and Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless. Co-starring Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O'Connor. In theaters now.

This movie better be 40% spider research in the jungle or I'm demanding a refund
Sadly no, it's more like 4% :)
The screenwriters behind this movie mostly have a sub 20% on Rotten Tomatoes as their top-rated. The director has experience with one other movie that is far from being an action movie. Sony's decision-making is a bit head-scratching. At least Kraven seems to have a better team behind it.
The writers from Transformers 5 and Uncharted
@@terrymcginnis01 You are flat out wrong.
According to IMDB Uncharted Writers Rafe Judkins, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway.
According to IMDB Transformers: The Last Knight Writers are Art Marcum,Matt Holloway, Ken Nolan.
According to IMDB Madam Web writers are Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker. Sazama and Sharpless are the credited writers of treasures like: Morbius, Gods of Egypt, Power Rangers, The Last Witch Hunter.
@@SalaciousBCrumb-md3lk Sir. I said the writers of Transformers 5 (The Last Knight) and Uncharted... In response to the original post saying that Kraven has a better team behind it.
So you proved my point. The writers of Kraven (Art Mecum and Matt Holloway) are the writers behind Uncharted and Transformers 5. There's a third writer listed for Kraven (Richard Wenk) who did the Equalizer films and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
I'm sorry you assumed I was talking about the Madame Webb writers. I'm talking about Kraven.
@@terrymcginnis01 It does have a much better team behind it. Sure their record is not impeccable and I don't know if it will turn out to be good, but at least they hired good people for it. Though there are still a lot of things that can go wrong, like not getting along or studio interference.
Saw Madame Web yesterday and I was gasping out of sheer disbelief multiple times during the movie at how painfully bad this script is. I don't understand how these screenwriters still have a job in Hollywood.
"I have a mental block about Morbius"...
Don't we all?
Despite the low scores, this is the kindest review of Madame Web I’ve watched so far :)
How dare Alonso forget about Morbius! Clearly he hasn't morbed enough.
There's still time!
Christy, on the other hand, is more than adequately morbed. Christy's morbed and been morbed more times than Bob Evans made empty promises to wannabe starlets in the 70s. Christy's morbed more times than Lon Cheney and Doug Jones have been in the makeup chair. Combined. Christy has morbed more times than than Ben Mankiewicz has worn a leather jacket. Christy knows morbin'. Morbin' makes her feel good. Morb, Christy; morb! Morb 'til you can't no more!
The first review I have seen that mirrored my experience of watching it with my teenage nephew. It certainly is better than the vitriol thrown at it. It's kinda OK, and has a nice enough run time.
I enjoyed this one more than Across the Spider-Verse! Entertaining and kind of funny. This and Argylle are both better than the reviews give them credit for.
Dakota Johnson's deadpan is worthy of a Wes Anderson role
That is a great idea!
Having watched it last night, I am utterly perplexed by the hyperbolic reaction to the film. Did I think it was good? No. But one article called it the "Cats" of superhero movies, a title which I believe at least 10 other movies deserve to have more than Madame Web.
I love bad superhero movies. I don't care how boring other people find it. Bad superhero movies are anything but boring to me. I love the cheese. The sloppy choreography, the big dramatic portentous dialogue, the baffling decisions, trying to parse out what is late studio interference and what was part of the original greenlit script... It's all just fun. Bad superhero movies, bad high fantasy, and bad space opera are all genres I love
Does Tom Holland have it in his contract that he can avoid all the movies in the SSU? No Spider-Man in Sony's Spider-Man Universe -- it's bizarre.
at this point, if they got Nicholas Hammond, the fans would squeel and go "this Iceberg explains my theories video series."
It's impressive!
"I Think We're Alone Now" is back in my playlist -- thanx to this absolutely enjoyable movie. Was one of the highlights. Lots of action around East River Pepsi-Cola sign which, btw, is exactly opposite Greta Garbo Manhattan apartment! Now and then was wondering -- why all the hate and many bad ratings? The only thing I suspect could be annoying (for some) was that it was too "feminine", but not as much as to go on screaming: Omg! This is the worst, like, ever!
Thank you for including the famous line about her mother in the Amazon.
It’s irresistible!
You have to appreciate how Sony has made 4 whole movies (5 if you want to count the delayed Kraven the Hunter movie) just to capitalize on brand confusion with the MCU.
Finally!! A level headed review 😊 I had fun 🤷♂️ and hope to see these characters again!!! Great review guys 😁
Ha, thanks for watching, glad you did not hate it.
Great to see people actually Critic this film instead of just trashing it for klicks. You Guys just got an new subscriber!
Thank you very much! We're glad you're here.
This movie was quite entertaining. Never got bored even with a 2 hour run time. I kinda like the fact that the girls never got their powers. Anyone who says this is the worst comicbook movie they have ever seen, walked into already hating it.
Hooray! Glad you had fun.
My favorite part was at the end when Madame Web told the bad guy "EAT MA DAMN WEB!" and shot him with her web.
If only!
It’s not superhero fatigue. It’s formulaic feature film fatigue.
Movies cost 100 bucks for two people including food and drink. The unlimited novel things people can spend their time doing online for free why pay 100 bucks for a worse clone of other movies you’ve seen.
That’s why no one will see this.
David here from Florida I been a movie fan for over fifty years and I liked it because I got to see Dakota because I think she is a sweet lady. But I am very curious where are you going to the movies that it cost you a $100 for 2. I will let you know a little secret. Just go to a AMC theater just the basic club, I think it’s $15.00 for the year. You save on the convenience fee, no charge. Then always go to the first show for about $10.00 per person. Don’t buy any snacks they are too expensive. I go to the food court and get a side of Chinese rice for $5.00. If you are on a real tight budget go to the flea market and garage sales rummage sales and buy DVDS for a 1.00 each. And the best part is you get to keep the movie! And yes you can still buy a DVD and blue Ray payer. I hope this helps, see you at the movies 🍿
I loved it. Because I like paramedic movies and I love Dakota Johnson. She is very easy on the eyes and a great actress.
i liked it. even dakota johnson didnt bother me. 8/10
I saw it tonight and I had a blast! Its' messy as hell especially the last act, but there are great moments before, especially the reveal of the bad guy in the subway station. Great horrorish setup there.
Well, you two and Whitney are practically the only ones on RT with fresh ratings. I have a feeling Bibbs will like it too though, lol.
If you combine Christy's and Alonso's score the average is 5.7/10 so it's not a fresh score. I'm pretty sure fresh is 6/10 and over.
@@Phantoma3
Their scores are based on their individual print reviews, not this show…anything above a 5 for them is basically a “fresh” and that’s how they’re rated on RT.
"eye rolling exposition" isn't nessicarly a bad thing, even so bad it's good. For example Udo Kier in Susperia.
But yeah, the whole Purvian spider-cult was the storyline in the 2000's run by Straczynski, SO THIS IS A DEEP CUT that gets a devoted fan excited. Just want to remind you, a batman fan is "blah, Adam West is so old, blah, lets get rid of all of it." unlike a Spider-Man fan, "Oh yes, Spider-Man did have a talking buggy that climbed walls for one issue, that's cannon, cool cool cool."
btw, straczynski has a cameo in Thor 1. Aside from writing thor, he's written Babylon 5, Murder she wrote, created Shera and wrote He Man, so his scene involves him trying to lift thor's hammer, it's the best MCU cameo next to Stan Lee.... aside from he wrote the WORST Marvel comic next to Avenger's 100.
But yeah, I'll watch it, I do like Eziekel and Morlun reference from the comics.
sooo. you're way too kind on this. Half the movie is Dakota Johnson looking confused and perplexed. Then the villian doesnt even seem to have any agency and all he wants to do is to kill the girls and he's totally undercooked. Not even an espionage scene to show how he breaks into the NSA to steal the tech. Random 3rd act trip to Peru. and plot exposition... The finale with the exploding fireworks and her running around being all mega psychic. And the 3 girls were just there? It's like LOGAN but instead of 1 girl, they have 3 and they dance on a table to britny. And the chekov CPR... bad movie. I wonder how they okayed this script and how they approved the suit designs. BAD BAD BAD This seems like it was written by AI. . about 2/10.
Yes, Chekhov'e CPR! We thought that too. The ending is very confusing, you're right. Sorry you didn't have fun.
I still argue there is no superhero fatigue. There is just hate for bad movies or cash grab movies.
Nah. The recent MCU movies are not really "bad".
@@jesseowenvillamor6348You forgot to say "in my opinion". You see, I disagree, the Marvel movies are check box made at this point, little originality. If you enjoy seeing movies that you can predict almost point to point, fine, but the movies are no longer of much substance and lots of shallow. I would also say the fatigue is real. The sheer amount of TV and movies has diluted the talent to such a point and people are generally meh about it.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka Nah. That's just your wrong opinion.
No that was really bad...
@@funkyfromme Nah. You're lying.
Only one man can save the superhero genre, The Shoveler from 1999's "Mystery Men."
Legit underrated classic. The cast is still alive and acting. Other than Jeanine Garofalo, I guess. I don't think she's retired tho. I think she's just not getting many offers since she got blacklisted during the Bush administration. I think they could probably get her back. She and Ben Stiller are friends. Honestly I think they could probably get the whole cast back if they wanted to. I think it's a lot less likely than it was even just a couple years ago tho. I just don't see a current streaming service making a superhero movie, even a mid budget one, for streaming release right now. I think they'd still look at theatrical and decide it's not worth a wide release and just not greenlight it. I don't think they would make a series because scheduling would be a nightmare. So I think it would have to be a feature. Unfortunately I don't think anybody wants to finance something like it right now. There's still a chance if the stars align but don't hold your breath. I really wish it would happen. I love Mystery Men. I would bring in The Flaming Carrot in the sequel. It really would be fun to watch another one
Gosh 17% on RT though 😬 Me I sometimes end up quite enjoying a movie when I go in expecting it to be bad, maybe that's what happened to you two as well!!🤷🏻♀ But I doubt I'll bother for this one, here in Paris there's already too much I already wanna see and hardly have time for! Happy Valentine's Day!❤
To you as well, Bev! (BTW, PR'd a 10K over the weekend at 56:53.)
@@BreakfastAllDay OHHOO!! Now that's encouraging only 1 month out from your marathon!!💪🏻🏃🏼♀💪🏻
Hmmm. Ok, so definitely not spending money to go see it in theaters but I'll give it a go when it comes to streaming.
Currently @17% RT (3.7/10) & 29/100 on Metacritic. Can Sony pls stop making these movies as they unfortunately add to the general overall feeling of superhero fatigue?! Really hope SJ Clarkson isn't badly hurt by this & how do writing duo Burk Sharpless & Matt Sazama keep getting work (Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, Gods of Egypt & Morbius)?!
Ikr. Marvel is only releasing one movie this year but it doesn't feel like it because of all the B tier movies SONY keeps pumping out
@@odefeoberabor7597We're getting 3 of them this yr, SMDH!
@@odefeoberabor7597 Getting 3 of them this yr, SMDH!
@@odefeoberabor7597All of this garbage is Marvel...Just from Sony rather than Disney....Disney/Marvel is pretty terrible also....Ant- Man 3 was atrocious.
@@josephwilliams8001That's not true. It's not made by Marvel at all. Sony are using a Marvel character they've licensed. These are different companies it doesn't really make sense to imply Marvel actually had a hand in making this movie when they didn't. I'm no MCU fan at this point but you still need to be honest about these things.
This wasn't a good movie. However, I enjoyed watching it with my brother. He grew up reading the comic. He has a bunch of health issues and therefore can't go to the theatre a lot.
Nice that you could have that time together, Jason.
I had a good time. I was reminded of The Terminator in parts (it's nowhere near as good). I liked how Dakota Johnson was a reluctant hero who becomes a maternal figure to this unlikely family. I remember thinking the first Venom was pretty ordinary and then really enjoyed where they went with the sequel. Hopefully we can get something similar with a Madame Web sequel.
Alonso, that rose is in the early stage of decomposition.
This is the kindest review for Madame Web I've seen. Huh.
Fans want to blame Amy Pascal but she had nothing to do with this, nor with Morbius and Kraven. The ones people like, Venom, the Tom Holland MCU movies, and the Spider-Verse movies, she was a producer on. People are unaware she's not CEO of Sony anymore. The guy who is CEO of Sony apparently *hates* all this superhero stuff.
Isn't he the same guy who had Deadpool's mouth stitched together back in the day? (Tom Rothman??)
I’m curious if this movie used a good amount of AI on the script, some of the clunky lines are overwritten like AI tends to do.
Along with Alonso, I am excited for the next Johnny Depp and Todd Phillips movie.
Yeah that trailer was doing this movie no favors whatsoever….I am morbidly curious about this one…might rent it on VHS
The trailer doesn’t do the movie justice. It’s actually far worse.
I hope you're also smoking a clove cigarette and drinking a Zima while listening to Fastball on your Zune
you guys are the ones who have been nicest to this movie everybody else is giving this straight F's, 0 points just like when siskel and ebert were the only two people on the whole planet who liked speed 2
Let's see if this movie will *SWING* past expectations
Love these two. Wish they had more subs
Thank you! Tell your friends :)
LMAO . They LIKED Madame Web. What a joke.
Madame Web isn’t good but I’ve seen worse this year (Night Swim!). I gave this 4/10.
I’ve not seen Morbius? Should I watch it… should I do that to myself?! 😅
I liked Venom but was disappointed by the sequel.
Cough Universal Dark Universe COUGH.
I Kid, but SERIOUSLY 😒 At least Sony didn’t take this opportunity before them to make a Barbra Gordon Mythic Journey from Librarian to Birds of Prey Oracle😳We are winning because we are not on that twist on the superstring multiverse. Thank Dr Brian Greene I guess?
Dune part 2 can't get here soon enough
Review coming next week!
I will probably catch it down the line on Netflix to see what all the hoopla was about. Thanks for the review as always guys. You can't go wrong with Christy and Alonso.
How funny is it now that Dakota Johnson was roasting the Please Don’t Destroy boys on SNL for their 42 percent RT score??? Try 15 percent for this. Yikes. I like Dakota but this is Morbius meets the Marvels. I actually walked out of Morbius so….. yeah.
I hate to be this person, but I just got out of the film and feel exactly like you do. This plot and script were both clunky and poor, but I feel like people are being extra critical because this is a female-led production. There are some (specifically male) critics I see frothing at the mouth to destroy this film and it makes me raise my eyebrows!
Glad you didn't hate it!
@@BreakfastAllDay I will admit the random trip to Peru mid-plot was jarring! I couldn’t believe it, but I did love Dakota Johnson in this.
I heard it really feels like a 2003 superhero movie, so setting it then is fair.
Christy throwing around the word clunky like crazy...lol....this is a no thank you for me. I did like Dakota in "The Peanut Butter Falcon" , which is a very good movie, so see that instead.😁
There are probably other adjectives out there, but that one is fitting.
Why don't they tell us who's the spiderman is in this universe.
The unmitigated SACK on Sony to keep releasing this stuff. It’s wild the lack of curation of the Spidey franchise, right after a potential classic in Across the Spiderverse to this lmao. Even if its good they really should be more careful with this material.
Sasquatch Sunset.....did you see this ??
This movie was horrendous, I don't know how you would think this was a decent film. Even the star of the film has disowned this movie
This is the kindest review of Madam Web. Did she start a gentlemen’s club tho?
Guys, it’s ok to callout a terrible movie for being terrible. Your half-hearted, milquetoast review does very little to serve the audience. Hold films properly accountable so that we can get less of this slop.
Hi Larry. Appreciate your concern for our audience, but we've both been doing this long enough that we don't feel the need to pull any punches. We legitimately had a better time than you did. It's OK to have a difference of opinion. Thanks for watching, though -- Christy
Alonso has good taste about good movies but bad taste about bad movies
'He' is a male le$bi@n above all else, actual critiquing comes distant 6th place after all the virtues gets signaled.
The Amazing Spiderman & Venom are The Dark Knight compared to this mess.
I liked it very much. Have fun throughout it, which I couldn't about Aquaman or Marvels that bored me to tears. Premonition parts were interesting, action engaging, characters relatable. Really, I can't complain :)
Love the channel. Never agree with your reviews though lol
This might be the least scathing review I've watched... so... yeah.
Thanks for this review because the trailer is impossible to follow.
It is very confusing!
Only in Hollywood would they think to cast a 35 year old to play an elderly super hero, but I guess to Hollywood that is elderly.
There is a more recent, younger version of the character in the comics that I think they were more going for if I’m correct
Why movie of moonnight, daredavil is neglected? Everytime marvel is making these crap movies.
Hold up now. You liked this MORE than Lisa Frankenstein? 🥴
We did.
lmao, come on Lonzo....come on now, you know this movie is big trash
it should had been a 12 episode netflix series
with andrew garfield [amazing spider-man] as the 2nd main character.
This should be a career ending movie. The writers and director did terrible jobs.
Who cares if you spoil madame web 😭😭😭 what are we doing
We try to be considerate around here.
@@BreakfastAllDay I know I’m a long time watcher lol there’s just some movies I don’t think deserve the extra layer of protection 😂
I saw this movie with my mom in the Amazon while she was researching spiders right before she died
Bwuah! The juvenile superhero...when will this franchising madness STOP! Producers need to look at making good single films, not spread thin and create crap! Look to European bande dessinée for inspiration please! Independant American comics or graphic novels. Whats wrong with film making people today!!
It’s a 1.5/5 for me (same I gave for “Morbius” but this one didn’t make me angry like that one did). Is it good? No. Adam Scott, Dakota Johnson and Isabella Merced make it watchable. There’s a mother daughter scene that made it not atrocious like a lot of other people think is it is. The dialogue sometimes is atrocious. Worst villain I’ve seen in probably almost a decade. It’s a situation where I wonder if the studio even cared. I wonder how much stuff got fucked with in post production (they couldn’t even get the timeline right). Lorenzo Di Bonventura needs TO STOP PRODUCING IP. I hate to say it but Tom Rothman (with two entries in their universe back to back that flopped and you hired the writers of that previous entry to work on this) is making David Zaslav look decent (I feel like I also should add that I don’t like what’s going on with “Coyote vs Acme”). “Madame Web” is just one of those 🎥s where you question… “Why?”. The rumored plot when shooting was someone jumping through time in the multiverse goes back to kill Mary Parker before Peter is born and it’s up to Madame Web and the girls to keep her safe and I’m thinking… WHY DIDN’T YOU DO THAT?!!!
So are they gonna blame men again for it failing? Call us sexist etc
I’m so astounded by this review almost as much as your Ferrari review. This movie is one of the worst films I have ever seen from a major studio. I had so much fun but only because it was so astoundingly bad. You didn’t touch on the fact that every line of dialogue that comes out of Tahar Rahim’s mouth has been so poorly dubbed and half his dialogue is adr where his mouth isn’t visible. This is ten times worse than Argylle
We talk about how this is not his finest hour. Thanks for watching.
50 shades of Spider women.
Mcu fanboys are the only ones hating on it cause their precious spider isnt in it 🙄
Just got back from seeing this. It’s the worst superhero movie I’ve seen in theaters. Maybe the worst I’ve ever seen (never seen Catwoman but have seen Batman and Robin).
Sorry but I absolutely adore Dakota Johnson's signature non-commited style of acting in all movies. Hollywood is stupid and comicbook fans should get a life
That movie was not fine lol
You guys are making excuses for a crappy movie. "It's fine" is not a recommendation.
This movie just looks like it's an insult to our intelligence.
Good actors bad Script.
How are adults not tired of all this superhero nonsense. How long is this arrested development trend gonna continue?
