There's waaaaaay toooooo much blood in Immaculate's marketing (posters and Facebook film review mentions) for people to NOT KNOW it's not a horror movie.
I completely agree with Christie. Sydney Sweeney had something to say here and this is a REALLY important time to say it. This definitely shouldn't have been camp.
By the time it finally got going, I had already been bored WAY too long for it to be able to win me back in any way , though yes I did indeed admire Sydney's performance greatly in the finale there!!
Have either of you seen "The Magdalene Sisters" (2002)? It's the ultimate 'evil nun' movie, directed by the great actor Peter Mullin. And it's based on a true story. Highly recommended.
Like Christy, I was really entertained by this film. I found the jump scares expertly engineered, which jump scares rarely are. Sweeney’s performance is pretty ballsy. And some of the shot-making in the film is unexpectedly lovely - her emerging through the hillside vines and ivy, covered in blood, is breathtaking. I thought the catacombs were effective - given what is happening in that scene, I appreciated how they simultaneously felt tomblike and manger-like.
Gotta say, I respectfully disagree with Christy on this one; not only in the assessment of the movie (I'm right down the middle with Tim on this one), but also in the idea that this would invoke mother!-level backlash from the Cinemascore crowd. Immaculate just feels so milquetoast to me, to the point where I can't see it standing out either positively or negatively to the average person anymore than the typical horror film-of-the-week.
I've been fighting that feeling. You might be right. I also think Late Night With The Devil wasn't aaaaalllll that great. Good, sure, but quite an easy watch. I was expecting less cheese and more sinister...ness. I'd take either over a Conjuring though.
I found the first half of Immaculate to be sluggish, but once it kicks into gear I was giddy with the type of excitement I last experienced when watching 'Malignant'. The ending is pretty extraordinary. Sydney Sweeney is definitely having a moment between this, Anyone But You and Madame Web (which I am one of the few who enjoyed!) Look forward to the spoiler talk.
The story line was disappointing. Too many doors she opened, trying to scare us. But Sweeney’s performance was outstanding. She did an effective portrayal & if not for her, I’d trash this movie. It’s an insult & very offensive to the Catholic religion.
I thought The Voyeurs was a decent enough psychological drama. But not into movies like Rosemary's Baby or Mother. And jump scare movies are lazy. This is disappointing.
I enjoyed your review and your spoiler talk of this movie! I keep looking for more videos and discussions on it because I just saw it and thought it was quite something! Unfortunately a lot of videos I’ve found focused a lot on Sydney’s looks/body which is annoying, so thank you for not doing that in your discussions of this film!
Wow. What a treat. I am about to go see Immaculate today, and follow that up, a few hours later, and watch Cabrini! Its going to be NUN DOUBLE HEADER. LOL! Granted, each film has a completely different take on the life of people in this vocation - the first being sacrilegious and the latter being reverential - so it will be interesting to see which one resonates with me more.
@@BreakfastAllDay I just saw those two films yesterday. Immaculate was well shot and well acted, and that ending was so disturbing! Cabrini, the other film about nuns that I saw yesterday, was such a nice counterpoint to Immaculate. While Immaculate portrayed the oppressive and exploitive nature of religion with reference to its treatment of women, Cabrini shows how a life of religious devotion can be one of the most beautiful and impactful ways a woman can express her femininity. I hope you will do a review of Cabrini. I will soon forget about Immaculate despite some of its memorable elements. Cabrini is such an uplifting story, without being a heavy-handed vehicle for proselytizing, that it will stay in my mind and my heart for years to come.
What's the Twist and Turns aside I really love the story overall in its simplicity Sydney really gives a good performance here it's well-directed I think the camera angles are very restrained and disciplined and I really had a good time it was really tense bloody I had zero expectations going in and it was really satisfying 8.5 / 10
Being an ex-Catholic seems to give one a soft spot for certain types of horror movies. I'm a sucker for a possession/exorcism movie myself (can't wait to see Late Night with the Devil). Immaculate's on my radar as well. Who doesn't love a creepy nun movie? 😈
Very much a 5/10 for me as well. Good atmosphere and some really creepy shots. But everytime the film would build tension, they’d immediately deflate it all with an obnoxious jump scare. The story itself seemed very silly. I personally didn’t think Sydney Sweeney’s performance was all that great. She was strong with the high emotion performances (hence all the praise), but I felt her dialogue wasn’t very believable throughout.
Thanks for the review! Listening to what you two are saying, I think you can make this a double feature with Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta... They really complement each other 😎
People should watch Benedetta regardless because it's a great and funny movie about power, faith and hypocrisy with three fantastic performances from Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling and Lambert Wilson. It's not a horror movie though for the people who are looking for that.
Yes it can be predictable and sometimes but that's not why you have fun in this movie and people keep bringing up Rosemary's Baby I'm sick of old people bringing that movie out just enjoy it for what it is or don't comparing everything to the greatest version of what it was is not going to make it fun for anybody
as an italian I'm getting a bit fed up of all the stereotypes in hollywood of italian culture and catholicism. and historically some of the best of hollywood films have cannibalised a lot of aspects of italian culture. in some cases very well and even intelligently, but so very few
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION is actually NOT about Mary's Virginal conception of Jesus. It is about Mary's own conception being FREE of ORIGINAL SIN. In Roman Catholicism, every person has the stain of Adam & Eve's original sin on the moment of conception, EXCEPT for Mary. Thus, she was chosen to bear the Son of God.

So nice to see Tim and Christy together. You have a lovely chemistry together.
Thank you! Tim is great.
When I saw the movie title I thought this was a documentary on Alonso's hair.
I thought that was 'Fifty Shades of Grey.'

Listened to this on G&L, and love now seeing Tim talk about this one. Lovely job both of you. 8/10 (B+ in Grierson and Leitch parlance) for me.

The Nun isn’t good
I've never seen Tim be so emotive.
It’s baffling people find this basic-ass, unoriginal and harmless horror movie 1) any good 2) insane
I just like that Simona Tabasco from White Lotus 2 is here with Sydney Sweeney from White Lotus 1 lol

We didn't, actually.

He is indeed, thanks!
This movie was so slow and boring and even when it starting going it was still anti climatic. What a waste
She’s a good actress people have been hounding her to do “an ugly role” so she tried. She’s actually really good in Euphoria.
That ending though..
It's something!
Good nun-spoiler review.

Wah waaahh ... :)
So did that other nun smoke too (since she had matches in that awkward situation)?
Maybe she has them to light candles ...?

When is Sydney ever going to do her Barbarella movie?
When they have a proper script probably
Not sure about seeing this one based on a 7 😶

80 minutes of jumpscares and plodding boredom just to get to a pretty great ending.

Not true. She was born in sin. Jesus life was protected by the holy spirit from imperfection when he was in the womb.
Then, who was the father?
