Phantasy Star II - Compilation Remix

- As requested by "Jeroen Honingh" Here is my Remix / cover Compilation of all the Phantasy star II songs, from the Sega Megadrive game. I tried to make the entire song seamless which was probably the hardest part of all. It goes for half an hour so let me know if you sit through the entire thing! I hope you guys like it. I also realized I didn't do "Bracky News" so it's every song, except that one!
Original composer: Tokuhiko Uwabo

Hello everyone!
I know many of you are excited about a Phantasy Star III album being made by me, So to make this possible I have set up a kickstarter project. Thanks in advance to anyone who contributes! also anyone who contributes will have their name put in the credits when its completed as a thank you for making it possible :)
www.kickstarter.com/projects/428091550/a-phantasy-star-iii-full-album-remake?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=phantasy
Great idea! Looking forward to it!
This is awesome! Hmm you should get the word out to your subscribers with a new brief video so more people can be aware and pledge. I only found out because of Aeroprism's "shameless plug" (in his words) in his recent video that popped up in my feed.
I've had this Phantasy Star II Compilation Remix as my wakeup alarm for a few months now, it's just so good, I'm looking forward to your next project
@@coryza4197 This has been my feel good song now. Really keeps me going XD
just came back to the video today to find a way to contribute to you, thank you!
Edit - I guess I saw this link too late, the kickstarter failed or just didn't meet the goal?
@@Marionettetc didnt meet the goal unfortunately
This is what Phantasy Star Generations 2 should have sounded like.
Haha Thanks man :D
Oh yea.
Totally. It wasn't bad, but that remix forgot that it was supposed to be the background music for an 80's anime. Big and bold hair = big and bold sounds. Flat hair bieber hair for Rolf? Flat sounds for his game amirite?
@@cherok5004 GIANT hair and giant sounds!!
You’re not kidding, I played through the game and was completely put off with the music.
PSII was my first RPG, on a cart from a closed video store. As a four year old, I had no idea what I was doing, but I fell in love. This music has stuck with me for 35 years. Thank you so much for creating this amazing arrangement!
Your welcome!
How can I say this... words fail me. I have been remixing Phantasy Star music since 2006 and I could never, ever hope to achieve something so seamless, so wonderful and perfect. Seriously, Phantasy Star is one of the most important things in my life and its music is my favorite aspect. I'm listening to this and I will admit without shame, I'm holding back tears of emotion.
Luke, in all honestly, I just wish I could shake your hand and thank you. You have no idea how big a gift you brought to the Phantasy Star fanbase and to me. This is way beyond magical. The more I listen to it the better it gets.
This is beyond amazing. You just made a fan for life, I look forward to exploring your channel. The only way I can give back to you is by inviting you to visit my channel and hopefully get a little bit of joy for all the awesome you just dished out.
Wow. You are THE MAN.
Oh an this is sooooo going to my channel. EVERYONE I know needs to listen to this.
Wow what a nice comment! Thanks man & your welcome, I'm glad you like it! I will have a look at your channel soon :D
I am seriously in love with that remix. I'm not kidding. I'm getting serious chills. That Death Place intro? Holy crap.
Haha chills are good, yeah that Death Place one I like too :D
I can't wait to hear what you think of my mixes!
The transition into Rise or Fall was so sick. I could tell it was coming and I got seriously hype.
This is masterful, and I'd kill to hear your treatment of the Phantasy Star 4 OST.
This is amazing, listen to it at work all the time when my audiobooks start to bore me
This trumps the official Generation 2 arranged soundtrack in every conceivable way. Definitely worth extending.
Totally gen 2 music was trash.
@@jaydub7386 It had its charm, but this is definitely better.
After many listenings I can say this is a masterpiece, this is a integral part of P. S story, any lover of the original game should listen to this and in the car is fantastic, hope you do one day IV.
This music is healing my soul
After almost a year, I still can't get over how good this is.
Haha thanks mate!
@@lukejansen3540This whole soundtrack, the way you arranged it, is like a drug to me. I have it all memorized in my head at this point.
@@Raphael0654 wow! 😅👌
@@Raphael0654 I fully, whole-heartedly resonate. :) Tokuhiko Uwabo's original work deserved something this comprehensive to honor how brilliant every subtle emotional wavelength truly was. Sure, the storytelling of PS2 was extremely limited, but once everyone encountered PS4, I'm certain that they realized just how (purposely) melodramatic the story was. Triumph and tragedy, indeed. #RIP_Nei #RIP_Alys etc. lol
@@Raphael0654 me too
Since this video has done pretty well, and today I reached 1000 subs, I may consider doing a Phantasy Star III album if this comment gets enough likes :)
@@teamdoa hey man, sorry btw i accidentally removed your comment by pressing remove instead of reply about being the 1000th sub.
Dude great job. Coincidence I find this a day after you post this. Just wanted to say you really did a good job of redoing the soundtrack while staying super faithful to the feel and composition of the original soundtrack. I really dislike when a remix goes nuts and sounds nothing like the original, or omits entire instruments, etc... and you really nailed it.
Since you forgot Bracky News I wouldn't hate it if you released a single that was just that one track. No point in sneaking it in to this one at this point.
@@zkilla1211 haha i wont be trying to add bracky news into the already made remix, plus id have to reload it. Maybe ill do a seperate one oneday. Yea i know what you mean about over doing a remix. It depends on the song that needs doing if it hasnt got much to begin with. I try my best to usually do a bit of both, by keeping much the same but adding a bit more. Although sometimes ill go a bit overboard. Some people like it some dont, its all personal preference in the end. But im glad you like what i did 😉
@@teamdoa haha well its a possibility 😉
@Nick Loiacano thanks man, yea the reason i said id maybe do ps3 is a few people have asked for that which led me to believe it was more popular. Tbh ive never played any of them games, though i briefly played ps2 after i did the comp. N i got stuck lol
This is the best remix AND compilation of a video game soundtrack I've ever heard... It really feels like you're living the phantasy while listening to this remix. The flow from one track to another is just perfect. Just superb! Bravo. And thank you for making this.
Death Place is probably my favorite omfg
Phantasy Star 2 was the first rpg i ever played , a game that made me love these kinds of games. Thank you for this amazing nostalgia trip.
Your welcome :D
Still rocking this compilation. It never gets old. Absolutely crushed it.
This was absolutely beautiful. You made an old man feel young again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Your welcome dude!
@@lukejansen3540 I'd highly recommend doing a remix, with real musical classic instruments sounds, that attempted in this 16mb console ingame realm, composed in its melody lyrics,, we did that awhile back, but that was before the SD card was invented (CD drive bulk archive issue did away with).
I see the quote reference to Rolf’s commander
I know I'm pretty late to the party here, but I just found this. I love all the old Phantasy star games and their music. This is SO well done man. I love it!
If you haven't already, I would love to hear your covers of III and IV as well. Great job.
I guess I'm 4 years late but a friend just linked this to me and it's absolutely fantastic. Thank you for making me feel like a kid again while simultaneously updating this late-80s masterpiece for modern ears.
Man, this is great! I got this game when it was new, but I was a third grader and it was so hard and never finished it. Recently started playing it on my Switch and am obsessed with it. This game has haunted me for years because I only got as far as Uzo Island.
I was a few years ahead of you (8th grade) when I got PSII and it was no joke for me either. Countless hours of grinding, getting hopelessly lost and dying... lots and lots of dying. 🤣 Eventually got through it, though, and am very glad I preserved. How's your playthrough going?
@@artiegohome I beat it! And man, the amount of grinding I had to do was insane, even for an old RPG. I have Rolf at level 40 and everyone else in my main party at 39. Very satisfying to finally finish.
I never got far in PSII as a kid, I did get half way into PSIV though, like to the air castle, but I got stopped by the 3 guys.
Let's goooooooooo!! This is amazing, bro, thanks a lot. Thouches my youth and make it seems like there's others like me who made this game a self history.
You definetly done it.
Love this. I remember trading in my nes and several games for this one game. My life changed forever.
Thanks, haha seems like a good move
It's a fairly valuable game for being old as dirt too.
@@millgiass in Europe it was import only ( Genesis ) so I had to modify my Mega Drive to play it
@@masterkraft4746 that doesn't sound fair to me.
@@millgiass that was usual in 16 bit console systems. There were games that were not released in the US or EU but only in Japan. And if you wanted to play them you had to come across said game by luck, because somebody was selling it in your country and often make small modifications to the console in order to play it.
Great job, love the transitions and the way you have arranged the setlist.
I'm utterly shocked at how faithful these tracks are. I have the originals ingrained in my memory and these are all perfect! Amazing thank you!
Thank you! And you are welcome
@@lukejansen3540 I have a question, did you take the original MIDIs and go from there?

This remix blows my mind and brings back memories from decades ago. I can't thank you enough for doing justice to one of the defining soundtracks of my childhood.
Thanks dude. Im happy you like it 😉
This is a musical masterpiece. I keep trying to use it as background music while I work and I keep having my attention moved to some incredible detail of the music. The original music and your remix are so perfect together. Thank you so much for this!

Do you have a flac version of this?
@@lmagus no, sorry
The beats in "Pleasure" are phenomenal

Classic Phantasy Star was a truly special thing, and while I've no qualms with the like of PSO2 and other modern entries, the origina saga and its music is something that simply does not recieve the respect it deserves, kept alive only by marvelous individuals such as yourself. Phenominal work.
SO AWESOME, thank you for doing this, Luke!

I recently introduced my young daughter to this game (original), and we just finished it. Locating this remix/homage is an EXCELLENT treat! :) Well done. I hope she remembers the kinds of *EXEMPLARY* classic game music I've been showing her. Things like original pieces from TLoZ, C-Vania, Ys, and plenty more.

@@cappuccinobear1123 Right?! Tokuhiko Uwabo's work was bloody AMAZING. And Luke's modern medley is nothing short of magical. I often wonder if Uwabo has ever heard this video (or whatever, "watched" it, lol). :)
I never post comments on RUclips but you have remixed an astonishing arrangement that actually improves the already perfect original composition. I let this play for hours on loop.
haha Thanks, Im glad you enjoyed it!
This mix is heavily in my rotation for doing work / focusing. Amazing job.
100% sitting through this entire thing. I thought I was in for the original midi ost. But NOPE. This is a million time better.
That pause in the melody at 0:15 makes me laugh every time I hear it. Yes, that's how it sounds in the actual game. But it pauses there because the music playroutine slows down during the transition in on-screen visuals at that moment. If you listen to the track in, say, the music test mode, that pause is absent. Still, I love this cover compilation. My only minor gripe is that one or two of my favorite tracks had their keys changed so they'd fit better in a seamless mix.
happy console gamer sent me here
Yup 🔥
Way better than Sega Ages version.
Great job!
amazing remix melody. Makes me wish I had the time, money and a team of game programmers and 2-d sprite artists/animators to create a proper "extended/enhanced edition" of Phantasy Star II....
These days games were so "mystic", PStar2 have one of the absolute
coolest and catchy soundtracks, upbeat but yet smooth, and whatever
they used to make this on have a good "sound" and the producer great
taste and skills. Even how "simple" it can sound, phenomenal phantasy
for cocky, weird beats backbeats and melodies ♥
Nice upload.
Fantastic compilation. Not gonna lie, I was blown away by your cover of "Pressure." I just heard it in another video, and I had to stop by to hear the rest of the album.
I really hope you do consider making a PSIII album.
wow man thank you for this ! It's incredible !!!!!
The music of this game is burned in my heart forever. To hear such a great remix is beyond description for me. Thank you sooo much!
Wow! Takes me back! Perfect tribute to the first JRPG I ever played (I was obsessed with it!).
One of my favorite songs from and RPG. Now it's even better!
This mix is so perfect it HURTS. Goddamn son... well done!!!
Hahaha! Thanks man :D
You're welcome. And thank YOU!!
I've been looking for something chill & appropriate to set on in the background while playing some early CRPGs that lack any bgm, and this sets the perfect atmosphere for drawing grid maps and falling through holes into rude traps. Brings back all those old PS series memories. Thank you for putting this together :)
Thats cool! And your welcome 😊
This brings back so many memories. Absolutely love it! Have you made a remix of Phantasy Star 1? Rise or Fall is one of the best "Battle" tracks in a JRPG ever!!!
This is an outstanding remix!
Long live to ol' classic PS!
This is quite possibly one of the best remixes of any game i have had the pleasure to hear. Funny thing is i would have liked it in tracks (Not that i have any say lol) HOWEVER!!! I also can not think of hearing it any other way than this full complication. My hat off to your talent! Thank you for sharing this with everyone!!!
The problem, I think, with dividing it into tracks would be that the smooth as hell transitions would be lost and they are one one the best parts of this remix.

Man, PHII was one of my first cartridge of MGD back in 92, I was verry youg and hadn't learned to understand (at least) english. I remind ask for my sister to traduce dialogs for me and it literally gave me the motivation to learn it. I remember also go in game in the house of the pianist where you can play songs from the rest of the game just because I like the ost so much (even with the poor MGD audio chip). You made a wonderfull gift to people like me who have so much nostalgia in their chilhood gaming era so , THANK YOU it's really amazing!
Thanks for your story, I always like to hear what memories people have from the games they used to play and Im glad I still help bring some nostalgia to people. These were the soundtracks to our childhood and we still remember these over 20 years later. :D
Wish I could get this on vinyl
Same here! Gah the nostalgia
I'm a long time Phantasy Star fan, and being around in '89 when this game originally shipped.. WOW, this remix is great; Wonderful even. Love the extra layer of percussion you added and love the synth. I know you didn't make this remix in the '80s but damn, it totally feels like it totally could be from the 80s. I love the the way you mixed the tracks together so seamlessly. I love how you stayed true to the originals as well and expanded upon the songs as they were in the 80s.
You've successfully transported me back to 1989 for a good 33 minutes.

Luke, your remixes are incredible, best in class IMO. The title song for Turrican II, "The Final Fight", is considered one of the most iconic pieces of video game music from the 16-bit era. It was composed by Chris Huelsbeck, who also composed the music for the original Turrican game. Have you considered recreating that one? It would get some serious attention.
