With watching you for a number yrs do root work I got up the courage and Nigelized the roots on many of my trees this spring (I'm in Alberta.) I'm pleased to say so far they have all survived don't know if I should be surprised or not but thanks Nigel for all you do
Love how you absolutely attack that boxwood at 2:35 haha…”if it lives it lives, if it dies it dies”. Cold blooded man!! Lol, jk of course. Great video, thanks!
Wowee! For the first time in ages I got to catch the peremiere! Fun times at chat, thanks everyone! Nice rootwork on the trees, they're off to a good start!
Drastic root pruning is a necessity sometimes. With the hands and skill of a great surgeon, Dr. Saunders, the tree is in good hands and will recover nicely.
Cool! It might have been a little early to uproot the ash - I repotted my ash a little too early last year, and it nearly didn't make it. They bud out somewhat late in my experience here in Norway, however they also seem like strong survivors. Let's hope it lives =D
I hope it does well, My wife wants to make a tomato garden in that corner, so all the trees must go! I have too many trees as it is, but I may try and pull a few more out!
Hurleys for the Irish sport Hurling are made from Ash root wood. They look for a nice curving grain structure for the right sections. Kind of makes sense with that thick root come out to the side like that.
Great video Nigel and exactly the same as what I have been doing over the recent weeks. What with the lovely weather we've been having, I've been out in the garden finding all types of plants that could one day become a bonsai. Nothing better than finding a free tree eh? Happy Easter everyone!
I really like the ash. It has a tough gnarly look. I hope it grows well and survives. The boxwoods will also be really nice. I dream of growing some of these more northern trees but I think it's too hot where I live. Does anyone have experience growing northern trees in warm climates?
Hi Nigel you just keep producing trees and videos! Respect! I am always impressed with the fact that you have good images & sound throughout, no matter where you are. Any tips for a fellow YTer?
With a little TLC, the Ash should recover. Keeping the Emerald Ash borer away a challenge but with a good systemic should help keep it at bay. Usually bores start feeding in early summer.
We have lots of black forn growing on the sides of roads. They are a beautiful tree. When they're in flower. I thought about digging one up myself and putting it into a pot
Hello Nigel, hope your having a great day here from Sussex, England. Small tip try wetting bonsai soil and pearlite slightly the dust can cause respiratory issues! keep planting :D
Like the pot that you are using for the ash pre-bonsai. Hope to be able to see another video on it in the upcoming weeks when it begins to sprout. The boxwood are going to make a really nice forest. The buckthorn in the drum pot is going to look good as it sprouts. May they all grow well for you. (Any updates on the Community Garden?)
We have Emerald ash borer here too. The city sprayed all their vulnerable trees. Private owners are able to purchase the chemical to spray their trees, also companies would come to spray. Perhaps it's available for you to protect your tree? It was sprayed by plane in some places here. Those trees you potted look really neat. Fingers crossed they bounce back nicely!
I would say both trees are kind of hardend, and stand a good chance of making a good growspurt, after they've recovered from this first treatment. They both have potential! Liked watching it happen, thanks for the effort of sharing.
I don't think I would worry about these two trees. the huge root on the ash had very few fine fiberous roots. As for the European buckthorn. I would say it didn't become an invasive species by being easy to kill.
Hi Nigel. What I wonder about is the nearly black soil color in your front garden. Do you know what that soil is composed of? Maybe the soil type even?
Who are policing the propagation of prohibited plants? ‘’Some random day when you think it’s the zombie apocalypse but it turns out to be the propagation police ! An official officer asking if you know why you are being questioned.
Very excited to see how the Ash develops! It actually looks great in that pot.

Wow, you're getting through these yard trees, what a feeling
Luckily there are Nigel’s videos to get through the hardest days! Cheers!

The ash and buckthorn both have great character.

That Buckthorn is a cool looking tree.
You must spend a fortune on pots! You've always got such nice ones around.
WONDERFUL VISIT IN THE GARDEN
Some really nice YARDadori. Hopefully they’ll survive long into the future. Looking forward to watching their development. Thanks keep growing.
YARDadori For the WIN!
That European Buckthorn is a handsome tree.

You got a good workout on these trees. I wish you the best on them all.

I see you have a fierce wind out by you also. Time for tea.
That wasn’t a root on that Ash, it was a tree growing sideways. 🤣
Haha!
spring is fun
I hope they all make it!

It looks like that Buckthorn grew up knowing it was going to be a bonsai decided to prune and shape itself ! hahaha
Buckthorn is really nice

Hi Nigel, I think the buckthorn is already stunning! Reminds me of the sea-buckthorn i collected in a local deer park last spring.

You could give those front garden plants a water once in awhile just because :p
Buckthorn:
Everyone in bonsai know that an S-shaped trunk make the best bonsai ;D
Beware of the Night Terrors. Ash looks well protected from them.
Hi Nigel, can we have an update on these 2 charming trees please ... regards from England .
A jig break? I hear that all the time around here.

Ash are tough i think it will take it slow this year making new roots and next year explode
Did the ash and buckthorn survive?
Yes, both are doing well!!
