The Chaos Gate soundtrack, of all the WH40K game soundtracks, remains my favourite. The latin-ish choral elements, dark, gothic themes, and mix of instrumental elements makes for a soundtrack that I've listened to for years, and used when Im playing tabletop games.
This game is so old, and yet it has the imho best Soundtrack for Warhammer 40.000. It doesn't sound like Music made for that universe. It sounds like Music made BY that universe.
I bought this game when it first came out and was taken aback by the awesomeness of the soundtrack, It still holds up well to this day and is criminally underrated.
This was the best Warhammer 40k Game ever. The concept was pure strategy. The music and the graphic gave it real good atmosphare. And the storyline made it addicting :-) I remember I always ran out of Marines late missions. In the very last mission with these small isles I had my last marines deployed lol.
Memories! This is the first Warhammer game I played, on a Windows 95 pc, good old times, hope Gog . Com will take this under it's wings, I am totally going to buy it if they do.
This was one of the first games I ever played. I was around 7 years old by the time and didn't even know English. But wow this game has so much nostalgia to me. Killing off the Chaos army one step at a time. (I even have a Warhammer related profile picture, haha!)
I always thought the music for this game was brilliant. It really captured the essence of the Space Marines and 40K in general. Really gothic and brooding.
Gotta agree with you here. Dawn of War have an alright soundtrack, some themes being excellent. But this music has a lot more of the "Grimdark 40k essence" (TM) injected into it, especially the UM chant as you mentioned as well as some other tunes.
Easily the best music written for 40K so far. If only Dawn of War had had music this good. Simply beautiful - thematic, atmospheric, stirring. I use it when writing my Space Marine fiction.
ARBAAL1522 It'll be with me to the grave. "Do i take the plasma or the flamer for this mission?..... hmmmmmmm" Then about an hour later I start the mission.
@radizero In Chaos Gate you were one ship with an under strength company on I believe, as you were returning from a crusade and had sustained heavy casualties. In DoW II you were not the whole chapter, you were elements of IV Company left behind to supervise recruiting on Calderis, IIRC, hence why are technically so under strength (a company would have more than one tactical squad, one assault squad, etc.), but for some reason you have an unlimited supply of reinforcements :P
@radizero The SM themselves were beefed up (which was good, since in DoW 1 they went down like butter), but my point is the fact that you had an inexhaustable supply of manpower provided you could get a squad to a reinforcement point (obv it cost resources on multiplayer, but I'm referring to the campaign). In Chaos Gate, however, once a marine dies, he's not coming back.
oh, i forgot to mention on my virtual pc when i run win98 my wallpaper desktop is the picture on the box of my Space Hulk board game that i scanned many years ago. very inspiring.

@Henners1991 Yeah ur'e right, i remember when someone died (i played the game very, very young) and i got very sad. I'm feeling you, the fact that in Chaos Gate you only had a handful of space marines meant that you "got to know them" etc. However in Chaos Gate, they're only a fleet correct? In DoWII the whole chapter stands behind you. But you're right. =)
@ChildOfTheEmperor Ouch being a fan of 40k includes DOW, Chaos gate, Final Liberation, Space Marine, Horus heresy, Word bearers, storm of iron, nightlords, Liber Chaotica, Ultramarines, Grey Knight, Eldar trilogy, etc. hell if going to sell myself short on just one thing and it was DOW that got me started :D
@radizero On the last level you're rescued by a whole Company (under Angelos) though, and in Chaos Rising you encounter the first Company (veterans and honour guard) as well as Angelos' Company, I don't think it's specified who was made the new Captain of IV Company after Thule's entombent... I'm also not sure as to whether all of IV Company is present, but again you seem under strength... though other Blood Raven forces are nearby ofc so it's likely you're just in charge of a strike force.
@MedievalDragoon For real dude, I had this in 98 I was only 9 and not that good at all LOL but now I have it and im working on beating it, I swear these old games have something that games today lack, music is one thing lol

In common maybe, but Tyranid Attack (a sci-fi dungeon game, like Space Hulk and Space Crusade, in which you explored a Tyranid hive ship with a view to destroying it,) dates from around a decade BEFORE Starship Troopers. Certainly, recent versions of Tyranids have conformed with Starship Troopers, (and old U.E.M.C.(tm) stalwart Andy Chambers wrote a Starship Troopers game, shortly after leaving. But Tyranids predate Starship Troopers. Richard Halliwell's Space Hulk was based upon Aliens.

ARRghh!! Stand Firm Brothers!!
This game kicked so much ass! I was actually considering buying an old PC to load DOS on it so I can play this title again. Sure wish they'd make another turn-based tactical 40k game.
@Henners1991 But Dawn of War 2 does a better job showing that. Your Scout/Tactical/Assault/Devs squad are 3 men squads, with a sergeant being able to lead them. The marines rarely dies in DoW2 Single/Multiplayer. They are very expensive but, man...they sure are awesome.
Does anybody else listen to this music while they're painting their models? ... I'm doing some traitor legion Imperial Guard right now ... it seems fitting lol.
@EinherjarServitor No, sorry, the people at Relic are too busy making consoled strategy versions of CoD on steroids to pay any attention to what people who are actually interested in Warhammer lore care. We should all be 16 year olds with Xboxes. I seriously miss the times when producers made games that fans wanted to play, not games that can be played by a chimp from NASA just to sell more copies. There might still be hope yet... So much nostalgia listening to this.
Well to DoW's defense, it's basically a glorified tabletop-fast paced game instead.. So to oddly phrase it. Anyway, I just went for Terminators in DoW and went GG. Blood Angel Terminators! Aah.. I miss Space Hulk 2~
That's the funny thing. In the narrative, a Space Marine can punch the air so hard that it creates a shockwave which blows up the heads of anyone unlucky enough to be nearby. But in the game, they really aren't that hard to kill.
Zerg is the rip-off of Tyranids, not the other way about :P Aaanyway, you must understand that it'd be a bit hard to convey (and a bit silly) to have a unit of 5 Terminators wipe the floor with an entire army! Got to forsake 'realism' for gameplay a bit :)
