This lesson is going to explore how to play notes around chords based in the open position on “acoustic” guitar. The technique behind doing this not only sounds great, but it is easy to do. When I was first learning how to play guitar this was a sound on acoustic that I’d always found grabbed my attention right away.
I think that this sound on acoustic is a real attention grabber because we hear the chord up front and then we immediately get a melodic idea that matches the key and matches the chord harmony right after it.
The best part is that even if you’re still a beginner guitarist you’ll still be able to learn this technique without all that much difficulty.
This lesson applies a “2-Step” system based in the key of, “G Major.” The first step is all about establishing chord patterns that make up the foundation for the harmony.
In the second step, we will start to focus on the notes that relate to the chord harmony, (in our case those are notes from the, “G Major” scale).
Once we know the chords and we know the associated scale, we’re going to blend them both together using the chord up front with a simple scale run played right after it. Let’s get things started by learning how to play the “I-IV-V” primary chords from the key of, “G” Major.

Outstanding tips and fantastic 100 page book. I'm new to playing acoustic guitar after playing a Mosrite electric guitar for 56 years. I'm 72 and well-versed in music theory, but brand new at applying techniques and concepts you intro in your demos and explanations. I'll be exploring your offerings. I'm mainly looking for finger style techniques and campfire songs I might play at parties with friends. My acoustic is a 2019 Martin D-18 with a contact pickup. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the great comment and for all the support /kind words as well. Those Martin D-18's are nice guitars! Enjoy!!
Thanks for doing what you do. I occasionally do what you recommend here, but more often, I use the adjacent idea of playing with major/sus4 or minor/sus2, as well as min/min7 tensions. The other related idea I get a lot of mileage out of is using the song's bassline while transitioning between chords
Donated and got my book. Thanks!
Go Andrew Go! Thank you for keeping guitar players informed. This month I will invest in your website and your Patreon.
Awesome, thank you!
Nice video
Kept it simple and short
Thank you
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Good Good stuff keep the good work god bless you Thanks
Awesome. Exactly what I have been looking for to help my travis patterns on open chords get to a new level. Do you have a video or course on how to learn the notes of the G Major scale and also a lesson on what you mean by 1, 4, 5 primary chords?
if you play in G, your 4th chord is C, so 1 is G, 2 is A, the 3 B, then C so that is 4th and 5th is the next after C comes D
Cool
what make and model guitar is that ?? it looks so comfortable to hold :)
That one is a Alhambra Classical Guitar - Made in Spain. Alhambra Guitars was established in 1965 and has 50 years constructing some the best handmade classical guitars in the world. They sound fantastic.
What about a G maj with 2nd finger on the low G, (6th string)the first finger on the B(5th string). Open D( 4th string), open G (3 string) . 3rd finger on the D ( second string) and pinky on the G (first string), as another alternative to switch around with?... Btw, great lesson , touch, and tone as always.
C maj with a 6th string G base note is also useful.
This video absolutely DOES not work for anyone that plays guitar with a pick.
Use "Hybrid Picking" technique for the string skips. Watch this video if you need help with it... ruclips.net/video/FLEbYceoVZk/видео.html
Its a nylon string acoustic guitar, who uses a pick?
