- Destiny 2's Lore in the Season of the Chosen features the Presage mission, which sees us boarding a lost Cabal ship known as the Glykon. Onboard we discovered proof of Calus' experiments, the remains of a guardian called Katabasis and the remnants of an attempt to communicate with the Darkness!

It just hit me that Ghaul's fascination with the Traveler and wanting to be "elevated and chosen" is mirrored in Calus's attempts to do the same with the Darkness.
They both are saving the wrong master, as orxy said to akka the worm god of secrets, (paraphrased) you gave us your spawn, our worms, but it is not the nature of the deep to give, the deep demands things must be taken. This is why our worms hunger grows eternally.
Ghaul tried to take the light, Calus is tryijg to be chosen by darkness
Calus wanted his cheeks clapped. Gary wanted to clap cheeks. Big difference.
Its a natural thing with the Cabal. They have an unquenchable thirst for power.

Seriously, anytime in any lore tab that someone mentions salvation it immediately triggers my fight or flight at this point.

Okay I gotta ask- why salvation? Yes, it’s used exactly and precisely to describe the darkness (garden of salvation, house salvation « calus has heard the voice of salvation » the drifter calling gambit ‘a chance at salvation’ etc.) but is there any other specific meaning that salvation has?

The darkness has been trying to herald itself as some kind of savior, setting us free from a Traveler that's holding us back and killing us all. It sees itself as an inevitable, ultimate truth of the universe (from the Gardener and Winnower story, told from the perspective of the Darkness/Winnower, it claims it is the embody of "Survival of the Fittest" and hence the logical endpoint of all life) that enlightens people who give in to its temptation. "Salvation" is such a common motif with anything related to the darkness, because it preaches about itself that it is the ultimate reality. People who embrace this "truth" about the Darkness are being set "free."
@@augustcross2305 magnificent interpretation. Salvation is like freedom from suffering, just everything disappearing would be better than keep the endless wars to achieve fake peace. We live in destiny without rest, we never cease to exist, we are fight for almost 9 years in the same war to protect our "lives" and the life of people from the city. Look at the eliksni, their entire culture and home disappeared, a once cultured and glorious society now thrive to survive by scavenging systems like garbage collectors. Destiny is like living after the biblic apocalypse and like Jesus already took his people, the rest is only struggling to survive without rest. The human race in destiny is so crazy that they created an IA that shot the fucking traveler, the light entity, the life representant, he will not visit other planets till we somehow defend him from the inevitable pyramids and darkness.
Salvation is resting from this nightmare

There's nothing creepier than a Ghost that embraces Darkness. I don't know why, but it always unsettles me. I got the same reaction from Toland's Ghost.
The scary thing is that this was foretold. In D1 it was said that a gaurdian who communed with the darkness saw his ghost growing as a rose in an infinite garden within the darkness. This suggests, to some incredibly perturbing degree, that the ghosts may not be as much of the light as we might have thought. If a ghost can be corrupted, is there anything that can't be?
Creepier is how you just disregard it like that. You say embrace the darkness when really it just was selfish for the first time in its existence. It spent endless time and suffering to keep its guardian alive without a thought because self sacrifice was programmed into them by the traveler. Now the darkness does what it does and granted it salvation. It opened its eyes to what it gains from the arrangement and fell to hopelessness. It felt the chains binding its fate and fell to one of the 3 fates of those who embrace the darkness. Either they fall from weakness being consumed or they are corrupted from falling too deep forgetting who they are or they are like us who slowly reach for power while retaining who we are and strive for perfection.

I used to hate Katabasis, he seemed like a traitor, but after seeing the full story he was better than that. His ghost was the real traitor.
All alone on that ship, to be revived in front of those scorn and your Ghost staring at you, I seriously would have wanted to see exactly what was going on in Katabasis head at that moment.
I don't think Gilly was a traitor. I just think the mental toll was too much for either of them. Katabasis seemed to experience a ton of trauma from the Red War and felt let down by the traveler and Vanguard. Meanwhile Gilly was torn between his purpose to serve the light and traveler and his duty to serve Katabasis. In the end the emotional toll was too much for him and he wanted to be free.
Imagine if they held on longer though. We probably would've arrived by then
Katabasis was a traitor nevertheless. He ditched us during the Red War. He abandoned humanity when they needed him the most!

I can't imagine the crown doing anything good for us. If Eris was concerned about the skull above Shaxx, I wonder what people think about the Vanguard bringing a horrific Hive artifact in.
It can. From it we can at least learn how it can control the will of the Hive, and if possible we can break it free from the grasp of Savathûn, the Darkness, or whatever else it's linked to. If Calus learned how to repurpose the Crown, so can we. Plus we have Ikora, Eris, Osiris, and maybe even Toland to help study it.

Welllll, about Osiris..
The moments where the Cabal and Katabasis fought hordes of Scorns made me pretty sad and scared. Them teaming up for one last stand against enemies they fear and facing their final demise. These cabal and Katabasis needs to be recognized by either Zavala or Caiatl.
That entire scene brought goosebumps. The mental image of a handful of worn out, beat down cabal back to back around the crown of sorrows mentally preparing while shrieks grow louder from dimly lit hallways is terrifying. The black flames, reanimation and the realization of the inevitability of death... Screw destiny 2, just make a friggin movie Bungie.

That last lore card was nuts...when I read it myself I just sat in shock for like ten minutes. This has been by far one of my favorite missions and bits of lore
Brutal too right? Youre defeated and surrounded by Scorn ready to rip you to shreds. You plead with your ghost, your supposed closest ally and closest thing you have to the light and traveler, but that plea falls on deaf ears. Your ghost has been corrupted by Darkness and will not help you and is offering you 1 more death or a thousand more...just awful stuff

One question still remains: Where is Emperor Calus?
Perhaps he did get his audience with the darkness after all. He may be in their realm getting his answers, and perhaps we may go that realm and reunite with him in Lightfall. We may never know.

I think they "Took" Calus because he kepted trying to call it, essentially pestering it.
We'll see him again, of that I'm sure. And when we do, I'll have a blazing Golden Gun ready to finish what I started in 2017.
He is with the darkness for sure or the entity. His followers may presume him dead but I think we will see him when we finally see the voice behind the darkness
I think one possibility is he's in the Ascendant Realm, he did have the Crown of Sorrows after all, and he very well could have pulled Toland or something similar.
I wish this mission had low gravity outside the ship, and the jumping puzzle in DSC

Actually reminds me a lot of Aliens, just finding the aftermath of something foreboding and otherworldly
I'd love to actually find ourselves in a similar situation, using our knowledge of our experience aboard the Glykon to escape sharing the same fate of its crew, all the while still dealing with a similar vibe
Constant battling against legions of scorn, constantly scrounging for things with which we can burn the scorn into oblivion. Or shattering them into pieces with the power of stasis. That would be am appropriate use of the survive objective. Or maybe even using SIVA to suspend the bodies of the scorn into a even more corrupted army, so that eventually we may control the glykon in it's entirety. That could lead to a lot of very cool mechanics.

Byf this is late and I hope you read this but I had a difficult year last year. Nothing made sense and I considered ending myself at times. However you made my darkest moments feel less dire because your entertainment was the only thing I could get my hands on at times. Thank you for being here.

@@Cayde-6sHorn When we killed Panoptes back in CoO we didn't prevent that future, we simply altered the path the Vex would have to take to reach it. It is by no means a future that is guaranteed in any case.

Real talk, when destiny is eventually over if you don't find another franchise to cover, you should really look into being a voice actor for audio books or something similar.
You have an amazing knack for storytelling and making even fairly dry or boring text readings become rich and interesting. Its one hell of a talent and I genuinely am happy that you found Destiny and decided to make this channel. There are a good handful of lore channels and I have nothing against them, but they lack your ability to tell a story.
Anyway, I hope you are well, and hope you aren't working yourself too hard!

my brother and I just got this exotic quest - and while we ran through it quickly to get the gun...I looked online and found that there were so many things to nab - I went back through solo. It's insane to imagine there's this much lore packed away on the ship!
Now as someone who didn't touch season of the chosen...as of season of the lost...can I still fully enjoy this ship? From all the collectables and such to the crown room?

It's so interesting to look back at this mission and its lore given the new context we have with Calus and the Witness. I imagine it will be even more interesting to actually play this mission back when we get the exotic mission rotator in S22.

What if the Enity behind the Darkness is actually the Winnower, meaning the two are not the same?
Whenever the Darkness possesses our Ghost, it refers to itself as "we", which makes sense because it's a Fleet. But in the Unveiling lore book, the Darkness, or the Winnower here refers to itself as "I", singular. And now in Season of the Chosen, we learn that there is an Entity behind the Darkness. Isn't it far-fetched to say that this Entity is the Winnower that controls the Darkness? Let's use the Traveler for example, it's the source of the Light, but we don't think it IS the Light. We consider the Two separate. So why not the same with the Darkness?

Lmfao!! Yeah reading that part, I actually visualized a Guardian going Spectral Blade with a handful of Cabal allies against a hoard of frightening, stinking Scorn.
I started to think about Nightstalker and how much more useful that would have been.
Then, I got carried away with this mini movie I just made up in my mind that would look super cool if I could draw amd animate it.
We need an Anthology like the Animatrix and Halo Legends, different artist for each Destiny lore story.
Surprised the significance of his name was not stated here. Katabasis is the beginning of the arc in classical Greek story where the hero descends into the underworld to achieve his goal; it's normally supposed to be followed by a turn in fortunes, and then the Anabasis, the return from the underworld, now changed, now grown.
It was a journey it was ultimately not his to take.
I love me a good ghost ship story too, and this quest has it in spades.

Maaaan. I know that the community keeps making the joke that "haha titans dumb eat crayons haha" but titans so oftenly get the short end of the stick in the lore.
I wouldn’t exactly agree with that. I’m somewhat neutral in terms of class bias, obviously I like hunter ideals a lot but I’m also a slytherin according to Harry Potter ( also can we talk about that? The classes share the same symbols as their Harry Potter counterparts. Humans are the hufflrpuff, the “everyone else”)
Anyway. Titans are cool in lore, 3 of my 5 favorite characters are titans being Saint, Shaxx, and Saladin
