"The Age of Kings" is based on Age of Empires 2 (whose full title includes "Age of Kings"), which is a game that Sandy Petersen also worked on at some point. So all the buildings are based on those found in AoE2. There's a few regular houses and a town center at the start, a castle in the middle, a dock behind it, a barracks on the West side, and an archery range on the East side. The implication is that these are all actual buildings from the Middle Ages that hell has just essentially dug back up and used for their own gain. Hence why there's almost no modern technology anywhere.
As for the eye switches being shootable, this was a huge liberty I took. I know Sandy was never this consistent, but I feel if he had gone into Doom 2 with a bunch of ideas for shootable switches in mind, he'd have picked a texture that fit.

"At World's End" was a pretty exhausting map for me. It doesn't seem complex, but I had no idea what to add any to the buildings. I think that's the one map I worked the longest on. And to make matters worse, if you stood in a certain spot at the start and looked towards the end of the map, it'd crash Chocolate Doom because there were too many linedefs on screen. So I had to rearrange the layout several times.
"Below Zero" is actually the first map I ever finished for the WAD, with the Mall being the second one. I always wanted to have a level where you freeze outside with a suit, but Doom's lack of textures and the ugly green overlay of the rad suit always put me off doing it. But aesthetics don't really matter that much with this map set, so I didn't really mind.
The premise of the map is that you're in an arctic research base, so stepping outside is too cold for you (hence "Below Zero"). The only demons outside are ones that have been frozen in ice for millennia, while the human workers inside have been mutated. The North pole is the last place where you'd find the lord of all demons, so of course Doomguy searches there first, just to scratch it off his list. But I do like your theory that it's the moon as well.
Also, the teleporter being broken is unfortunately not intentional and I will have to fix that. It's not accurate to how he did things, unfortunately.
By the way, I could have sworn you were Texan. You definitely give me that Hank Hill-vibe. And "Bananas in Pajamas" was a thing in Germany too. I remember the song going "Bananas in Pyjamas, sind lustig anzusehen". Maybe it was just the song too, because I can't recall ever watching any episodes.
If I can give some feedback on your mod again: I think the standard fire of the BFG should be looping. It's always weird when the animation lasts ages and then just... stops. I think if it worked just like the minigun and it kept firing as you held the button down, that'd be much better. Would make Stalvern the guy who has to rev every gun up, but once he does, he's unstoppable.

Oh that's so weird, because we haven't been able to hear "The Age of Kings" without thinking of AoE2 for the past 20 years, so good reference!

Oh of course Below Zero is a frozen map!! Why did I think it was the moon? Too much Duke Nukem Lunar Apocalypse I guess. Thats a great map, and I always have fun with that gimmick, but yeah the green radiation suit tint is just awful. Its sad but I think that tint alone could be a huge reason why we dont see mappers play around with that mechanic more. I know some formats will let you change the tint, but of course most people want their maps to be playable in as many ports as possible, so thats not really a good option either.
I think my accent is a little non-specific because I grew up around non-native speakers. And there's probably a little bit of Texas still in there somewhere, but that was a long time ago!
Funny enough, Germany is actually where I saw Bananas in Pajamas as well! I watched it in English though since it was one of the few English shows we could get at the time. I always assumed it was British.

Bananas in Pajamas was on PBS in the US for like a hot second I think! I also picked it up somewhere as a kid and had basically no context how I was exposed to it.

Bananas in pyjamas is an Australian institution. When the ABC (the Aussie public funded broadcaster which is beloved) was facing funding problems with the previous Government, we had bananas in pyjamas holding placards and doing PR to get public action going.
