Such a drastic change from a solid, heavy beautiful doll with a lovely screening and darling Chinoiserie PJ set to a hollow, light, cheap, pixel-face doll with okay clothing. I'm currently trying to snatch doubles (to keep boxed) of my favorite Silkstone Barbies given that I don't believe we will ever see this level of craftsmanship ever again.
To me, she has always been the prettiest of all the Silkstones. I bought her originally at $70, and I just picked up a second one ( I love her that much) for $149. Talk about an increase in value!! She is a a beauty, that is for sure.
I’m going to open my box with 2021 Lunar New Year in it now, but I am prepared to send her back because I think the pixelation will be too much for me. I decided to keep Black Widow Barbie, and I just don’t want to amass pixelated dolls that cost close to $100 for me in Canadian dollars. Maybe the technology will improve and we will view these as the dark days of Barbie eyes. Your doll appears to look better in person than the pictures, so she is definitely a good acquisition. She also isn’t a crazy price like some of the others (jealous of your black cocktail dress). I was also looking at the older Chinese New Year Barbie from Around 2005, who has good face paint and the lovely Lea sculpt. I notice her price has gone up on eBay, likely because of LNY comparisons.
So yeah ... I got this one when it first came out. I love it! I have just about all of the earlier Silkstones. I loved the basic or "lingerie" dolls and the separate outfits and accessory packs!! All of which Mattel did away with and made all dressed dolls instead ... I hated that! Since then there have been very few Silkstones I've liked. The Cocktail Dress doll, the High Tea and Savories doll, the Hollywood Hostess doll ( to name a few ) I would like to get now, but no way will I pay $200.00 and up for a f*****g Barbie doll!! I think it's a shame Mattel is dumping the Silkstones, even though ( in my opinion) they're not as good as they use to be. As for the new "Lunar New Year" doll ... yuk! The face could be prettier, the hair should be a lot longer, the print should be all over the dress, and I personally hate the bent arm. Absolutely no comparison to the Chinoiserie doll.
Congratulations Jeffrey on another silkie from the golden era. I wish I had gotten her when she came out, but back then since I could only afford one I opted for her sister Sunset, a Barbie Bazaar exclusive. There was another sister doll as well but I don't remember her name. All 3 are drop dead gorgeous. The difference in quality with this new doll is astounding, Enjoy!
Okay, back from unpacking the Lunar New Year (LNY) Barbie. Well, the eye pixellation is definitely there, but worse is that one eye is printed too far out. Also, she was in a box with 40th Anniversary AA Barbie, and they didn’t have any tissue and not enough bubble wrap, so both boxes were scratched. Too scratched for display. The AA Barbie also has a flaw in the lip paint. I am returning both. A local store actually is supposed to have LNY in stock, so I can go see if it is even possible to get a good specimen (another reviewer’s doll also had a wonky eye). She doesn’t really look like a $75 (CAD) doll, though, and I didn’t find her as pretty as she looked on camera. Her lips seemed printed a bit too high, though, so that might have contributed. I also got an order from Amazon, which was packed a bit better, and the play line Fashionista and chicken farmer dolls had fewer issues than the collector dolls (the other, Black Widow, has eye paint problems beyond pixellation). The thing is, collector line dolls serve no worldly purpose other than to look good. So, if they have poor quality control, they are a fail in my mind. Especially the face. From the dozen or so Barbies I’ve purchased in the past month, almost all of them have had problems (mostly factory defects)., and even replacements have had issues (sometimes the same, often different). I tell you, as a former pharmacist, if our profession were that sloppy, people would be dropping like flies.
It’s really sad. Most of these “collector” dolls just end up being glorified fashionistas. I’ve also heard multiple people have the same issues with shipping that you did.
@JefferySteinman what I had to do for my barbie basics no.5 asian doll was use 1mm waxed thread create a lasso knot and where ever the elastic was I tightened and wrapped the cord. And removed the rubber band
Omg I’m obsessed and need one.. her eye color with her makeup is just wow! Love her heels too and her bangs are IT. I just wish her top was cropped but that’s just my inner drag saying show more skin. Great choice!❤️
I'm pretty sure she retailed for $49.99 when she was released. Tuesday Morning had her and Suite Retreat for $19.99 each. There are two rarer versions of the Chinoiserie doll: Red Sunset has side-parted hair in a long, loose flip, she wears a camisole and shorts; Red Midnight has a chin-length bob and wears the same camisole as Red Sunset but with pants instead of shorts. I really miss the non-articulated bodies and the availability of separate fashions.
I like the New Lunar Year doll, but that one is a hundred times better! It's a pitty they stopped doing silkstones. You got Ken Fashionistas #162! I'm so looking forward to him! I hope he is available in my country soon. Will you make a review of him? I'd would love to watch!
I also remember her looking through Barbie.collector.com when I was a kid. Her make up is plain (not boring) but it looks so alive with those eyes and the way it was painted. The recent silkstones just give off a dead vibe even with all the make up they still look dead and just a piece of hollow plastic. I miss how those dolls with all the quality and craftsmanship look alive and give us some fantasy.
There’s is so much life in basically anything from like 1995 to 2010 honestly. The 50th anniversary of Barbie was so magical haha. I remember it. I was also barely 18 and moving out on my own so there could be a filter of nostalgia and coming of age too. But those dolls were perfection.
I want Gala Gown the yellow and grey redhead girl. But I also really want the vanity. Like a lot. And lavender luxe haha. Nikolai Ken. They’re so expensive and all over the place.
That was a very good review Jeffrey, I don’t know of any others. I bought mine years ago I got a great deal, $35.00 maybe I’ll take her out of the box in the Spring and dress her in a pretty cherry blossom motif if I can find one. I dislike the dolls with the animated faces, definitely for the “non” adult collector. LOL. I would love to see you review the new pink “Silkstone” that Robert Best designed it seems to be popping up all over the place. Great Video, Big Hugs from Salt Lake City!
Wow! I don't collect silkstones (yet 😉) but looking at her and comparing her to more recent dolls... what a stunner she is! A whole other category of doil altogether! Stop showing me these, I can't afford them! 😍🤣
Hi Jeffrey: love all the Chinoiserie dolls- you need Red Sunset and the Barbie Bazaar one - one has a bob with bangs, the BB one has no bangs, past shoulders wave. No comparison with the older Silkstones and articulated. The new Asian one is cute, not on my list. PS- Retinol is only to be used at night😉
@@JeffreySteinmanReviews it’s designed to exfoliate and renew your skin; night time. Use sunscreen. You’re young but Retinol has more minimal benefits- Retin-A is the real banana- prescription. I’m an Esthetician, so know my stuff, LOL
Haha idk how that is. But I’ve seen that name before. I was shading myself. I always make jokes about showing my tiddies cause my most watch video ever. I pulled one out 😬 and I cuss a lot.
The Lunar New Year is just a diisgrace. How people can support that? She is 50$ and has 70% LESS quality than a R.High from MGA that is 26% (half of the price). Man, this supposed 'Barbie Lovers' have lost their ability to think ... Let's talk about this AMAZING doll u got: Wow, you are so lucky to have her. The hair got my attention, so black - beautiiful quality. 2004 was a great year, I remember Fashion Fever - the fever. Good review!
@@JeffreySteinmanReviews I like to call iit trashionistas! hahahaha Around here, in Brazil, it's really hard to find Silkstones for a good price. Most of those doll are aroun 600/800 reals - wich is around 180 dolars. It's too much for us. Hope too see more reviews soon!
Haha she’s relatively inexpensive for a second hand Silkstone I think I paid like $115 with shipping. And she wasn’t the cheapest one. But she was the nicest one
Your new (old) doll is beautiful! Such a shame that we don't see this level of detail anymore. I actually really like some things about the latest lunar new year doll (her dress and the choice of face sculpt), but she is sadly let down by poor execution and really isn't worth $50. I could forgive everything else if her face were painted well, but it would also have been nice to see some basic articulation since I like to pose my dolls. I'm not sure that I understand the thinking from Mattel given that some of the $30 dolls seem like they are better value.
After watching this review in it's entirety I am torn. I personally own the 2021 Lunar New Year Barbie and I think she's absolutely gorgeous and well in-line with what Mattel has done with other Barbies meant to represent a similar thing ex. 2001 Princess of China, 1998 Golden Qipao both of which I own. You're comparing a Silkstone to a regular signature/collector doll. Silkstones are known for their attention to detail and quality so there really isn't a need for comparison when you know the Silkstone is going to outperform. 2021 Lunar New Year is not a Silkstone. Yes that's what they were doing for 50USD in 2004, but 50USD now is not that same as it was then nor can you buy her for 50USD. And in my opinion the Chinoiserie doll is less detailed than the 1997 Empress of China and 1998 Golden Qipao doll which are more vintage and even less expensive. I think the Chinoiserie doll is beautiful she definitely is one I would like to add to my collection, I really wouldn't consider her to "Chinese." Outside of her outfit being red and gold and her hair being black she's a really watered down version of China and Chinese culture. The 2021 Lunar New Year Barbie undeniably looks Asian even without the dress and depicts an aspect of Chinese culture. Her dress was even designed by a Chinese woman, Joyce Chen. So in my opinion, if your point was to get a doll that actually looks Chinese and actually represents Chinese culture without getting like Empress of China, 2021 Lunar New Year is the way to go. I truly believe she is one of if not the prettiest in my collection and looks the most Asian out of all of my Asian dolls.. My biggest gripe is her pose. No one stands like that. That could have at least put her on an articulated model muse body. If they were set on the model muse look. I honestly believe when it comes to Chinese barbies from Mattel that aren't Silkstone she really only "fails" in comparison to Empress of China and Empress of the Golden Blossom, but those dolls are also mean to represent different things than the Lunar New Year barbie.
You’re right the empress of China Barbie is very detailed and pretty. She doesn’t look Chinese in her face mold but maybe in person she does. The Chinoiserie Silkstone still looks of Asian descent when you disrobe her even though she has the nostalgia face mold it’s interesting. I’m also a huge fan of Silkstones so I would’ve bought her regardless. But you’re right I’m not Chinese so I don’t know how Mattel could properly represent Chinese culture but I’m sure 2021 lunar new year does a better job at representation than chinoiserie. I remember a few years ago the dolls of the world barbies and they made a China Barbie with a panda bear and people weren’t impressed with her.
@@JeffreySteinmanReviews Empress of China is truly one of my favorites and I definitely recommend getting it if you want something that is China. The outfit is very accurate to what the wore during the Qing dynasty in form. Both Empress of China and Golden Qipao use the "Kira" face mold and I would say she does look Asian in person. However, I will say that the "Mari" face mold used on the 2021LNY is better. Yeah, Chinese people don't walk around with pandas nor have them as pets... they're not dogs. Although I feel you have other reasons for not purchasing the 2021 Lunar New Year barbie, I still think she is a good buy if you want a Chinese doll in modern-formal Chinese clothing. I think the best lens to look at her in is a Holiday Barbie. Mattel has only done Lunar New Year once before in their Celebrations Around the World collections. But I am hoping with them specifically calling her "2021" Lunar New Year Barbie that it becomes an annual thing.
