- Happy New Year! It's my first video of 2020 and I'm deboxing and reviewing Best In Black Barbie doll who was part of the 2020 Barbie Fashion Model Collection (BFMC) for Barbie Signature.
Very sadly, this year is the last year of the BFMC collection. You guys know I love my Silkstones but I'm very torn over this doll. I thought she might be really gorgeous IRL but I just can't connect with her. Though I'm sensing some wonderful design references, I don't think the whole look came together as cohesively as we would expect to see from this line. And her skinny little articulated body doesn't help. I do think she has a lot of redress/restyle possibilities so if you love redressing your dolls, you'll enjoy her. I have high hopes for this last lineup as we send off the BFMC collection into the history books but this is not a great start, IMHO.

I love them!!! and they deserved a super glamorous ending, not that...she's looking like a poor nun in a short dress...worst in black than she should be called.

*Gothic Mourning BFC Theme 2020* He is slowly trying to kill us off the collection line by going plain and drab. Use whatever fabric, and silkstone heads they have left in their storage and quickly ship them out. No jewelry! Come on, Barbie always has at least earrings, necklace or a brooch.

So you’re saying black can’t be fashionable?
It "somehow" feels like a big part of ones delight, comfort and fun is being taken away. Slipping away as we experience her Silkstone quality slowly diminishing in our hands since 2 - 3 years ago. For a moment we were also confused when they made articulation happen (what is this, mannequin or playline?) This 2020 Barbie doll "seems" to be a result of an uninspired, sad doll artist, which can only be said because we know what Robert Best can do when he is overflowing with inspiration. I remember in the Atelier video Robert Best saying that much of what he designs for the Silkstone collection are inspirations from what is currently happening in his life. When he posted this 2020 Silkstone in instagram he even disabled the comments section seemingly acknowledging the fact that he knows too well how dramatic a change this is from the previous collections. He knows how collectors will be affected. And perhaps that pains him too (as all artists feel when their pet projects lose life in face of a company's new direction). However kudos to Robert for being a good soldier -- an iconic doll artist even. Probably he's following Barbie's lead. This prized doll is shedding her classic couture to battle market shares in a different arena. And so we see Robert's excitement and joy designing Barbie in her Star Wars regalia. You were right, Suresh. Doll culture and doll playing is changing with the flourish of technology. And perhaps being a multi-million dollar brand fighting to survive, Barbie needs to forget a part of her that once delighted us all and embrace themes that make her universally relevant, inclusive and diverse today.
Hm, very disappointing. That dress for the price? And no accessories? At least give her a bag!
I commend your optimism and or kindness for this doll, but in truth she is GOD awful! So sad but it is what it is R.I.P. Silkstone.

This doll is a pass for me, she's basically a cute doll, but that outfit is beyond basic. If she was at Tuesday Morning, I'd pick her up for redressing, and I would restyle her hair. Thanks for giving us a closer look. Cheers to more doll fun in 2020. :)
A lot of “um... yeah” and “hmm huh” moments for this doll. I love Robert Best as much as the next collector but gurrrrl... that price for this amount of basic just isn’t it.
At first I thought she was the final BFMC doll, so I just knew she would be in an amazing black gown or ensem. I was pretty speechless, like others, when I saw how basic she was in the promos. She could have been magical with more details and 1 or 2 jewels. But I just imagine her to be a celebrity stylist or make-up artist. I'll probably still pass on her or wait for a sale. Imho she should have been priced no higher than 40. Thanks for the review and best wishes for a wonderful 2020!!💌

im so disappointed with this doll and its just so saddening to look at. such a depressing unimaginative design especially for a goodbye line :( im so so sad about bfmc being discontinued and i really feel like theres some kind of crisis of creativity at mattel, not just barbie. the quality decreasing.. designs are boring and unoriginal... prices somehow rising despite cheep costs of production.... ugh theres just so much to say :(
Isaac b Cheap cost of production?? Lol what year are you living in? Production costs have doubled, tripled and quintupled across all industries over the past 10 years forcing many consumer brands to go out of business.
@@SureshNYC that is true but what im referencing is the cheap materials and cut corners (more specifically with playline) making dolls cheaper to make. probably not the best phrasing lol i feel like you cant deny the dolls made nowadays compared to even 6 years ago are far cheaper

I'm so disappointed for Barbie FMC to be ending this year. I have joined the barbie collection game a little late so I am always excited to watch your reviews Suresh. You are very detailed, informative, and jovial with each doll review. Plus you are truly the only barbie collector that does barbie reviews. I personally have to say that this outfit is a no for me, There is nothing enticing to even focus on. I may be more forgiving if they placed an eloquent necklace or a eloquent updo. I love the look of the barbie but it looks like 80s puffed sleeves met with 50s school principal and birthed this hot mess. I truly hope that Robert Best can blow us away with the last year for this collection. Thanks again Suresh! Always look forward to your next review ^_^
The doll has such a pretty face, and I love the color of her hair as well. The dress, though... again, I'm giving away my age, but the dress is remarkably similar to a cream-colored dress I once owned way back in the 80s. (And oh, how puffed sleeves of all varieties were big back then!) My dress had gold buttons on the sleeve and gold embroidery on the collar - apart from the color, those are pretty much the only major differences I see. What was old is new again! That said, I'm not thrilled with how very plain Barbie's black dress is. It needs some contrasting touches to lift it up out of the ordinary. Nor am I convinced that the dress matches this particular doll. Her complexion, at least to me, cries out for spring colors, soft pastels. Perhaps, if Robert Best was set on a solid black ensemble, it might have been better to feature it on a dark-haired doll, with more dramatic make-up. And how about some jewels...? Diamonds always wear well with black....
I think she is a great doll to customize and add your own style too. I think it’s a fair assessment and she really isn’t awful. I have her and can’t wait to redress her and style her hair. Remember the simple black dress doll of 3 years ago? She is simple and pretty and this one is too. Honest and fair review as always! Thank you Suresh! 💕🙏🏽😄

This doll was on my list but for the price tag, I can’t afford 😭. However you made good points, they did not do her justice with that hair 😂
Bought this for close to retail price. I've never owned a Barbie before but I saw her face and fell in love, she's just so pretty and I had to have her!

At first glance, I thought this was the Bewitched Barbie doll they released several years ago. The second one.
Kind of sad to hear that Mattel is discontining the silkstone line, the saddest part is I didn't get to own at least one of them :
I think she's really cute and I do like her kinda late 60s mod vibe. But like "goth" mod because of all the black. I would also have preferred for her to have been added a ribbon in her hair, or maybe some type of sunglasses or at least they should have given Barbie a clutch

Sorry but the best thing about this doll is the box. For the last year of these dolls I would have expected the first and last dolls to be amazing! But no! Barbie Basic!! Let’s hope we have better dolls in store for 2020.

All these negative comments about her make me so sad. True, she could have had at least some accessories, but I think she's very pretty. I love elegant, detailed, over the top fashion, but I also like very simple fashion too, so I really like her

I kinda cringed when I saw that scissor snip on the back of her dress. In Monique Heart's words, "that's not stunning". Overall, she looks good, pretty basic, nice face but I don't like the color of her lips. Nice review.

My friend is giving me barbie dolls as birthday gift and the budget is rm300, this doll costs rm249, I was about to pick it but I don't cuz I don't think it worth 249 we'll the face does worth at least rm60 tho, so I picked a puma x barbie doll, a 2011 fashionistas sweetie and a made to move, I'm still waiting for my doll to arrive lmao, stay safe everybodeh!

She’s beautiful as always, but the quality and the price... Disappointed but not surprised. I’d rather remember the BFMC line with their great ensembles through the years. Doesn’t look to me like anything Robert has done before, I’m pretty sure that’s mostly Mattel’s bosses ordering out for economy, such a bummer.

I was so excited to get my first silkstone a few years ago. It is sad to see them go. I think because of your channel I can better appreciate what the classic body dolls had to offer. Kind of plain, but I don't love or hate this doll. She looks versatile for dressing up or down in different ways. That said, she should be about $20 cheaper.
she’s the first silkstone doll i’ve gotten! she’s only $32.88 at walmart rn so definitely more worth than the retail price.
Personally, her outfit isn’t the greatest, however she as a doll is quite beautiful. I put her in another one of my silk stone gowns and she is absolutely divine. Lovely review and keep up the inspiring reviews!

I just got this doll honestly for the doll itself.. I think she has a beautiful face and hair but I am not very happy with the outfit. The concept is nice but I don't think the fabric was the best choice. But as you say, She has great potential to customize and at the end of the day, that's what I was going for =) . I am sad that they are not producing anymore of this line so I am happy I was able to get her +). Thanks for your wonderful review!

Honestly, this along with Pink Collection #3 make me think that Robert Best must think to himself, "Jesus they really botched this one." The sketch on the front of the box showcases gorgeous long flowy hair and they must have really rushed production on this one for the hair and dress to have come out this way. Thankfully the straight out sideburns seem to have relaxed over time because mine pushes back and down really well since there's little to no product in the hair. The face is gorgeous but I think I'm going to get one of the short black dresses from the BFMC fashion collection for her because she looks like she's headed to a conservative funeral in this piece.
The only thing I liked was the face and the hair coloring. What a missed opportunity for Mattel. Thanks for the review and Happy New Year!!!
me again... one of the problems, I think, is that the BFMC line has clearly honored the glamor of past decades, as you mention--i.e. the 40s, 50s and 60s--so, why close out the series with a quantum leap into modern minimalism? I truly hope the remaining BFMC dolls are more true the couture fashion of the past. Love your reviews!

I bought her because she was being discontinued but not really that neat. Her has was disappointing and I don’t like the fact that there were loose threads sticking out.
It would have been nice if maybe her collar and cuffs had black velvet.

Have you guys seen "Midnight Bloom" Robert Best did? Why couldnt that be part of the BFMC? Im guessing that Robert Best must be being pulled in many directions with Mattel and is unable to put in those extra details in the BFMC. :(

Kimmy Schmidt called and wants her "mole woman" dress back!...I have loved the silkstone dolls for years and have approx.2/3 of the line. They are lovely dolls! I love that you can touch them and feel the fine fabrics. Mattel, as a collector, I would pay more for better quality. I know costs have gone up, but collectors want dolls with all the extras like the early dolls.. the finests fabrics, the complete jewelry set, the beautiful coiffed hair... this doll has none of my checklist!... the price is lower, but so what! The hair is a disaster and don't even get me started on that shapeless, feedsack of a black funeral dress with "puff sleeves" that only Ann with an "E" could love.... peddle faster, keep up mattel, or its off to the fashion royalty dolls. Yes they are expensive but collectors have money to spend on our dolls!...I appreciate you Suresh NY for opening the dolls and allowing us to see the entire doll and the honest reviews. I have hundreds of dolls (lost count)... some boxed some not.... Your very entertaining as well as easy on the eyes.... this hot mess of a doll has "bored us for the last time".

I’m super confused by the critical issue you took with viewers and comments on the next Barbie review (75th Mattel Anniversary) considering how basically critical you are of this doll...I can absolutely understand why the comments might have taken a more negative turn of ‘Best in Black’ considering the take & tone of this review?
I was being critical. A lot of the comments were rude and mean spirited. There's a difference. I expect more from my viewers.

I have collected them for many years and I gave great respect for Robert Best, however when something isn’t right it should be expressed.
This is Mattel’s corporate creation, not Robert Best’s artistic creation.
Let’s call it out for what it is.

Thanks for removing the clothes and comparing her to the bodies of your dolls past! That gave me more insight to my own Made To Move doll collection for customs and play action posing (may be more of an adult than pre-17 year old art form also)! Putting a collector doll (limited production) in more of a Made To Move body means more of a play doll, I thought? Removing her from her packaging is then necessary! Action posing of LE dolls to individual tastes are then necessary? I like the high heel shoes and stockings (as you did) and I like her '59 face mold with her very strange hairdo (you dislike or find weird but I like and found interesting and unique)! $60 USD for this experience is questionable when Mattel Made To Moves are $15.99 USD (still found today at Walmarts but without exquisite accessories and more boring head and hair or head designs)!
Lawrence Jelsma I think they are trying to compete with Integrity Toys’ fully articulated fashion dolls which arguably are the most sought after high fashion dolls of the moment.
I really love your reveal videos. I am on the fence with this doll. I like the hair, but are with you on the side pieces. I love the shoes and stockings. I don't like the fit of the dress and I like the makeup, but not with the plain black dress. Her face just seems to fade away with the whole plain black look. I had to cut my tag off to take the dress off. I am going to redress her as I feel the dress is plain and shapeless and I don't care for the high fashion plain look. I don't think this is a "best" in black look. I would have preferred a cute cocktail dress.
