For others, Barbie is a role model, embodies a versatile and independent woman, and is entirely compatible with a contemporary feminist self-image of women. Now, Barbie is brought to life in a wild and quirky comedy starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-directed by the feminist filmmaker Greta Gerwig, of all people! I grew up loving Barbie, and my daughter did as well. Playing with Barbie DID NOT determine her future - she is now 30, has a PhD in microbiology, and I just bought her Scientist Barber to put in her lab at the University of California. A doll is just a doll and how you parent your children has to have more influence on their life choices than a doll!!!

Don't harass Barbie, let her be pretty in pink...If you want intelligent stuff then buy a book. Don't expect from a fashion doll to be compatible with everything that exists. She is a fashion doll and we love her for that.

It's like saying children having teddy bears makes them want to be a bear like creature and live in a cave etc. They can play they are, evolving their imagination and chasing away boredom, which is what toys are made for. I still don't understand why Barbie is so demonised after all these years. Maybe because she is a feminine object. I never seen a similar attack on any masculine toy. I would love to know how much critical content was made about Barbie and how much, for example, of a toy plastic gun...

The best thing about Barbie is that she is BOTH. It's important for women to be allowed being anything and still look as feminine as possible.

Then there’s the Expendables movie. 😆 I need a Wierd Barbie movie. She had so much character in playtime… never hidden but part of play time. 💕
I think the point of that line was that there are no older age barbies and there could/should be. It's also a nod to the way Barbie is a product of her time and what was "progressive" back then is considered anti-feminist now, so Barbie should change as the times change

It is a doll - people need to relax. As a child, I loved Barbie, and had several dolls. What she represented to me was a toy that I could play dress up with, style how I wanted to, and invent fun backstories. I think I mostly used the dress up aspect as a child. Never once did it occur to me that I was supposed to look like a carbon copy of Barbie to be beautiful or worthy. Not once. She is a canvas to play with - not a beauty handbook.

Agreed! It never occured to me to reference my Barbie doll as my beauty standard. And I played Barbie for hours and hours on end. I was in control, that was enough for me.
Same here...for the most part, but since I was neglected as a child, Barbies did become my idols for a while...and I do think it affected my subconscious unfortunately which then affected my obsession w/ my looks... so I think it's just different for everyone and as they said there is research that shows. My thing is - be a good parent, be involved in your kids lives and ask them questions, affirm their worth constantly & teach them moral values & then you can see Barbie for what she is.

I've never understood anti-Barbieites. Kids don't look at Barbie thinking, "I must look like that". She's a doll! No, we made our Barbies do whatever we wanted them to do. Through them I could pretend to be an adult with fancy/crazy clothes, doing whatever job I sounded cool. My Barbies were teachers & scientists, (and this was in the 70s before there were the 'career' dolls) but they were often just 'bosses' because I was a kid who didn't know what actually happened at grownup work, but I made Barbie be in charge of it. One thing is for sure, Barbie let me know that there was more to life than being a mom. There were careers! Adventures! Fun! Once I had Barbie, I had zero interest in baby dolls. Baby dolls define a child's role in play- they are mommy (or daddy, I suppose). With Barbie, a child can be anything.

Everyone forgets that Barbie's tiny waist is so when wearing clothes she looks "normal." Back in the early 1960s waist bands in her clothing were thicker, when wearing them she had more normal shape.

I'm a black woman and never in my life ever wanted to look like Barbie, or become Barbie, I find this comments of being role models really odd.
I think the movie is supposed the reference the fact that Barbie isn’t just a doll, she could be something more, she’s an icon and the fact that the movie isn’t just made for kids and for adults is kind of a good thing since some adults grew up with Barbie, meaning that they could relish their childhood, Barbie isn’t just for kids, she originally wasn’t made just for kids either, but that’s what makes her iconic, she can be for adults and children, she can inspire adults and children, so she isn’t just a doll, she is more than that, someone people can relate to, hence why this movie was about Barbie becoming more real, so that way people could relate more to her, along with her body standards, when she’s more human she won’t have to worry about it, she was based on a real person so body proportions shouldn’t have to matter, and she can have more of a human aesthetic instead just always being seen as plastic, she’s not just plastic, and she’s not always human, and she’s not this perfect girl that can do no wrong as seen in the movie, shes not just this perfect girl with the most perfect body, it’s her being human that made her standards more relatable, she is not just about Barbie, it’s showing that girls AND boys can be this human instead of seen as fashion models and their body standards, she is relatable to not only kids nowadays but also adults, She is Barbie

Barbie tells a little girl that she “can be anything” without acknowledging that a person has to *work to achieve* anything. It would be wonderful if Mattel could establish school presentations, training programs, and scholarship funds that would enable girls to take actual steps toward achieving the dreams that the dolls represent. Surely, the company has the means to do that, and doing so would demonstrate that Mattel is not just paying lip service to women’s empowerment for the sake of boosting sales.
Ken got rejected by high end jobs in the real world because he didn't get the licenses.

Were there at the time people criticising about young girls just playing with babies????? Oh my God!!!! What message did this transmitted FOR CENTURIES to little girls???? That women should be mothers at home cooking for the career husbands and have so many babies as men wished????? Oh, girls might well since kids learn how to do it! Ohhhh…. Where were then all these critics????? None??? Oh my….The Education you are talking about it’s not Mattel task: it’s the government task. Unfortunately, nowadays people just love criticising. What is your idea of a doll for someone to play with then????? So easy to criticise. Come up with an idea then! The greatest idea! Ahahhahah! Ah… and what about the toy cars for boys? Doesn’t this transmit a wrong message to little boys??? That only boys drive the cars? Not good. Ohhh and the proportions of the cars???? My grandmother was dying of colon cancer and my mom laid out some toys and a superstar Barbie was there. I was too young to comprehend the chaos of adulthood I was in dreamland with Linda as Wonder Woman and big Star Wars dolls plus Barbie and a cool dream house, I was easy going while adults were living in hell Barbie was escaping reality a child with fantasy of a lil girl blonde who a sick grandmother named her cricket not even her mother knew of that nickname. When Margot held Ruth’s hands in the film wanting to be real. Foggy hidden memory I thought I lost came real. I love Barbie don’t hate Barbie is a love of innocence and childhood.

aaand there it is. people have said again and again that having a barbie didn't harm their body image, seeing airbrushed celebrities and hearing people say those like them looked too fat was far more harmful.
I also believe that, Barbie is a canvas for a child's projection of her unique circumstances. Barbie was significant in my childhood because I never had one. Coming from an extremely humble immigrant family, to even have a toy was impossible. So, in Canada in the sixties, I decided to save my money, pennies I found, for years to be able to buy a cheap Barbie knock off. By the time I managed that, I was too old to play with dolls but took fabric scraps to sew little outfits. The level of impact was not about body image but to be a little like the dominant society, that I was in. That longing was intense. Inclusion is missed as a legitimate aspect or maybe it is all about inclusion.

I saw the movie last week and what I loved is there were more MEN in the theater than women. I live in the most conservative county in my state so this made me happy! I never was a Barbie girl, give me horses any day but since this movie came out I have been reading up. I have since bought the GRANDMA Barbie, who knew ( I am 62) and a couple Black curvy Barbies along with a few outfits that are handmade for them that are funky and more my attitude. I would like to see more representation of older women, larger women. And articulation...where has that gone? Will I get more? Most likely not but it is a fun phase for now.

It’s interesting the amount of expectations we put onto this “girl’s toy” when so many “boy’s toys” are not policed in the same ways.
Also, so many of the problems with Barbie listed in this video are not unique to Barbie/Mattel in any way; just a symptom of consumerism, capitalism, etc. on a larger scale. I’d be interested to hear what solutions the Barbie haters have to bring to the table.

I think it's all up to the adults we are surrounded by if we get our insecurities in a DOLL. My mom never told me anything negative about playing barbie so I never saw her as like "I will be super thin and caucasian like her!" No! I have my own insecurities because I see what's beautiful in others not because a doll told me to. We have our own way of determining beauty! For me I grew up just fine. I played with barbie because it's fun and I can be so imaginative with every play. I just appreciate her dress and how she looks but I never thought of it that I should be like barbie cause I know she's just a toy, she's just an image. She's not real therefore why would I have to compare myself to her? When I was a child I don't like if I get an asian barbie cause I know barbie as barbie! Blonde and caucasian. That's who she is and I don't have to change that just so it appeals to me or so she would look like me. I like her the way she is created. Now that I'm older I do appreciate asian barbies cause it's cute and fun but growing up? I played with caucasian barbies and I never had some unrealistic insecurities. Sometimes it's really up to the parents to educate their kids.
I find it interesting the narrator of this critical video inadvertently called Barbie’s body “perfect”. It shows how deeply ingrained the message is.

I loved Barbie as a little girl! Playing with her and creating a world for her helped cope with some hard times in my childhood. And I still have a sense of wonder and playfulness that I cherish as part of my personality and thank my playtime with Barbie for that.

These types of arguments drive me up the wall. I was never skinny or pretty or blonde, still I had 15 barbies and never ever felt bad about myself. Because my mother taught me HOW to play with them. To create stories, tidy the house,take her motorcycling etc, she was a doll to play with. Performing body that you can do anything with...YES. thats is what dolls are for. An intligent parent is capable of teaching thier children the difference.

I had Barbies as a kid, and I still have a few Barbies on display in my room. I never felt like I had to make myself look like her or be thin like her because I knew it was a doll and a toy to be played with I used to use her to pretend to be older to have my own life and be independent, I don’t understand why girls think they have to look like Barbie why can’t they understand it’s a doll a toy made of plastic that she is not real.

I've played with Barbie dolls my whole childhood. I loved them. I always saw them as a projection of my unlimited imaginations and dreams that I could have them enact. I never once took notice of her figure, proportions that i had to have when i grew up. I think i can say from all the comments here and as someone who's been a child that children don't care for superficial things like that because of their innocence. Its the society we live in that started projecting theur unrealistic body standards and stereotypical feminity onto Barbie and the girls who played with them that proved detrimental to all kids out there. Barbie started out with good intentions and hurts me to see this was corrupted by our own society as time progressed

that woman Elisabeth needs to live her life and try to be more optimistic, as a researcher myself by profession I know research work can really take a lot of your time , but I think she needs a good pedicure/manicure and a good spa and a self care day. Its just a toy lady, and if woman want to dress up and look pretty doesn't make them less intelligent. I am in technology industry , but I love dressing up and look pretty and never miss my spa/pedicures and nobody called me less intelligent or anything , I work in a majority male profession but never was judged for dressing up, in fact I was called creative for putting effort in dressing up. I love Gloria but I feel like she missed the mark on Barbie. She never grew up with Barbie, or played with her. Barbie was unmarried, childless, & a career woman. That’s exactly what Gloria was preaching about in the 60s.
Reading the comments- glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers that Barbie is a DOLL not a HUMAN. Barbie does not need to fit some criteria in order to make your kid feel better about themselves. Barbie is a form of entertainment. If your kid is feeling insecure from a doll, you should consider if your child has some deeper issues than just hating a doll because she doesn't look like one.

Clever piece. What is undeniable is that the Barbie movie has set off a discursive firestorm on the politics of gender constructs, posing the interesting question of how a movie about a 60 year old plastic doll became more politically controversial than Oppenheimer, a movie about the origins of the atomic bomb. (And yes, you must see them both! Each is very smart in its own way) ) Frankly, I think a woke Barbie is the perfect push back to the gender/race/sexuality censorship idiocy going on in Florida, which is becoming a genuine Orwellian state. Just imagine if they tried the cultural prank of swapping voice boxes on Barbie and GI Joe dolls today - DeSantis would probably decry it as a "gender crime." How's that for Orwellian?
I disagree that Ken and the other male dolls were boring accessories! I never treated them that way. Also, they were MANY versions of Barbie as a bride and Ken as a groom. I owned a Happy Family set that included Barbie, Ken and two toddlers. Sometimes I played with them as a family and sometimes Barbie and Ken were just dating. Sometimes it was just girls activities with no boyfriends. It was whatever I was feeling like I wanted the story to be that day. I certainly NEVER thought I was supposed to look like any of my Barbie dolls. They were plastic fashion dolls!! It's ludacris! I never thought anything negative about my dolls and they did not affect my self image because they were just toys. I would have no problem at all with my daughter playing with Barbies.

Maybe I was a weird kid, but I never expected my toys to look like me or any realistic human. My toys were animals, mermaids, etc. so I never really saw Barbie as a regular person.

As a young boy, Barbie, Ken and G.I. Joe were nothing to me. As it turned out, I grew up to realize that I had always been a gay boy who grew up to be a gay man. Dolls never did it for me since I preferred to play in the mud and then ride my bicycle. However, I will say that I do want to see the Barbie movie. I can't explain it, but it just appeals to me, but so does Ken these days. 😀

Barbie is a doll and will always be a doll so it's irrelevant to want and expect her to be human. Society needs to stop expecting fantasy to be realistic, that is why it is called fantasy, to be an escape from reality. If realism is what you're after then maybe dolls aren't for you.

Black Barbie was ‘introduced’ in 1968 but not on the shelves until 1980? What happened in between? 12 years a prototype?
Those are two different dolls: the one from the 60s was released as Francie, the one from the 80s was released as Barbie (as in “a Barbie”, not a different character).

The director’s aunt, Beulah Mae Mitchell, worked for Mattel for 45 years, so maybe she asked Ruth Handler that famous question during the years both of them were in Mattel? However, you’re right, the documentary is in fact about the first Black Barbie released much later in the 80s:
“Often when other dolls are made in the Barbie line, they don’t get to take the name of Barbie - they become the sidekick, like sister Skipper and Stacy or best friend Midge, a supporting role in Barbie’s universe. But in 1980, based on Beulah’s inquiry, a Black Barbie was launched. Designed by a Black woman, Kitty Black Perkins, who was inspired by the likes of Diana Ross, Black Barbie was a stunning doll, donning a fitted, sparkly red dress and natural short hair.”
The whole girls in my family & including all female cousins in my family (both mom side & dad side) had never have any barbies during their childhood as their toys, how they turn out nowadays? they turn out to be good ladies & girls. Even though there`s slight disadvantage in each one of them but need to remember nobody is perfect!
The main point that i try to say is that it`s not about the toys. It`s about how the parents teach their children, how the girls been educated to be a fine/good woman, how the boys been educated to be a good gentlemen! last but not least, how us bring our self to become a better person!!

Ok well I think it’s kind of ridiculous to make all these different kinds of Barbie’s like doctor Barbie’s and stuff because the whole point of the toy is image based.. it’s about beauty and fashion… little kids who have interest in science or medicine wouldn’t be interested in Barbie’s anyways they would want to play with science kits, magnets, and doctors kits… playing with dolls requires acting out more social scenes and stuff… when I was a little girl and given a Barbie I just ended up drawing on it, cutting all its hair off and then taking it apart to see how it worked lol… I probably should have been given a different toy since that’s not what it was Intended for… Barbie’s are for a specific type of person and a lot of children don’t have any interest in them.

Well, I've always been interested in science, now also into medicine and I loved Barbie as well. Played in the mud, Nerf guns, explored nature, always chose museums and planetariums as my preferred activities during family outings and simultaneously had all pink everything, obsessed with fashion and anything sparkly.
It's not that black & white to be into Barbie. You can be into a myriad of things even as a child. Liking one thing doesn't always negate the other.

Honestly all the talk about the objectification and insisting about the physical appearance is getting old. I played with Barbie, still have them and my daughter plays with mine. I've never met anyone whom had body issues and can be traced to Barbie.
There's one of the ladies that say that women her age don't give Barbie to their daughters and that is a falacie, otherwise who is buying all those dolls.
I'm also big in to restoring second hand dolls and giving them a new life.
It's a toy, it's a way to let your imagination go wild, me and my friends made clothes for them, created houses and so many things.
The doll is not the problem, society that transfers symbolism to the doll the issue.
It's amazing that there are different dolls for different body types and ethnicities.
Obviously we should keep challenging the companies to go further and create creative dolls and new ideas for the future.
No one is actually asking this question. Let people be people, stop causing divides, people are going to watch this movie regardless of if it's a or if it's b. Hopefully it'll be good, and something over politicized people will never be, fun.

There's an underlying nastiness to this movie.
My daughters and now granddaughters enjoy playing with Barbie… when playing I’m sure they don’t have psychological thoughts when playing! It’s about the outfits and imaginary stories that they make up! It’s no big deal… the girls that mistreat “doll” has something to do with the child not a doll! Go easy on the psychobabble!
I loved Barbie but it's a doll. It's a phase you grow out of when confronted with the complexities and realities of life as a human being. Her threat to feminism or impact on women's roles is pretty obsolete. Even in a digital format is my guess. I can't even tell you what kids want nowadays.

What a terrible documentary! DW I usually admire EVERYTHING you do but this documentary is SO NEGATIVE and so against Barbie and judging from the many comments (I see 100% PRO BARBIE comments) below, your journalist/editor seem to be VERY biased or wanted to create a controversy. Every doll is unique to collectors. And children use some toys to have fun, some toys to educate themselves, and some toys to aspire to. Why must Barbie check all the boxes???? I am shocked how twisted this documentary is. You focused on less than 1% of the general population, mainly the Barbie haters and critical people who don't want to accept the doll as a unique fashion doll. I applaud Mattel for offering inclusion, different role models etc over the years to create added interest but really! A small child I think enjoys Barbie because she is ideal just as the Couture houses dress mannequins and models - those runway shows don't represent reality many a times but suggest an idea, fantasy and a new FASHION concept. Barbie was an idealized doll that had a huge wardrobe of clothing and accessories. I believe that was the allure of this doll. And obviously by the huge sales figures over the years, the population embraced this - not necessarily mothers! But the young children did! They loved to look at a beautiful doll. A doll! Not a human. I was expecting a positive documentary that accurately told the history decade by decade of Barbie's success and appeal for that decade. What I just watched was an extremely WOKE program trying to be critical and endorse those who have no interest in the appreciation of the toy. It's as if you want to destroy the fashion, beauty and luxury industry by bashing Barbie. Barbie is Fashion! If you had done your research you could have added a feature just how many people are dressing up in pink to see the movie to show how much Barbie and fashion go together. I am so annoyed you created a topic that has few supporters judging by the many comments here who disagree with your bias comments on an iconic toy.

Barbie is just a doll. Girls get them, often strip them, lose the clothes, make sime new clothes and the family pets use them as chew toys. Inspirational, not that much. The mivie might change that. Personally, I was more insoired by real people. Sometimes I was inspired by fictional people trying to achieve inspirational goals. Never was I or anyone I kniw inspired by a dolly.
