I feel like they didn't bother with the back of the dress because they never thought you were going to take her out of the box since she's ment to be a collector doll, but that is really cheap on their part because I mean come on shes 50 bucks like they couldn't afford to print both sides?
As someone who Asian, I wouldn't buy her. I think they could given her Chinese shoe. For $50, I expect poseable joint, outfit printed on both side, and some kind head item.
Yeah her shoe choice is really odd, clearly the entire look is traditional. Even if it is supposed to be a modern person wearing traditional dress, they wouldn't just stop the effort at their ankles!
@@gwenmarquezlovesbtsmonstax458 OK so you collect her in the box and you are ok with the cheap printed on fabric for $50? They could have embroider the dress for $50 if they weren't gonna give her any joint or print the back. She just look super cheap even if you never unbox her. If I see someone with her in a box I would be like $20 doll?
I completely agree, the quality of these collector dolls are what the standard quality used to be of the regular dolls. I just bought two Ariel dolls from the Style Series & was disappointed to find the second doll wasn't articulated either. It was the same hand on hip pose & made it difficult to get her (one piece) out fit off her too. To give Barbie some credit at least they give some dolls flat feet, where as Disney just flings "flat" shoes on feet that are clearly meant for high heels.
@@NotAnotherKuromi Yeah I am so sick of disney fan always defending them when their doll are just as bad, if not worst, then mattel. It is $25 for the style doll and they can't even fully articulated it. Then they have this winter xmas theme doll that $50 and it not fully articulated either. For $50, I expect to be fully articulated not just bend the knee. Then her dress is sewn together and not 2 piece. It crazy how you have to pay over $100 to get articulated doll from disney.

I just wish they could’ve done more with the dress it looks beautiful from the front but they could’ve added bit more detail like printed it on the back too not just the front and maybe changed the shoes And made her arms and knees bend her face is gorgeous tho and kinda like her but I wont be buying her anytime soon don’t have that kinda money lol
This is so disappointing :( She is very expensive for what you actually get. I don't think the design is that great either. I think anyone could have come up with this XDD. On a higher note: I love your honesty and you reviews are always great :D
I'm Chinese, and I immediately thought she was beautiful!! I agree with the disappointments you pointed out. I love her face and her simple hair style is amazing! I'm glad she's more modern (Hair, shoes, jewelry with the traditional twist with the dress). wish i had this doll growing up!
Thank you for reviewing her. I am part Chinese, and this would have been a really nice gift for my girls at a lower price point. I agree she’s beautiful, but for what she costs, she should have been so much more. As another person said, I wish they would have given her traditional Chinese shoes. They are so beautiful and could have kicked her up a notch. And the print not going all the way around is sad too. Melissa, do you remember the Barbie dolls of the world from the 90s? I did not have them but one of my friends did, and they were so beautiful. Happy Lunar New Year to everyone who celebrates! 💖🥰
You can find many of them for cheap on Ebay. I bought the Japanese Around the World Barbie new in box for just $10 dollars last week on Ebay and she looks much better quality than the doll in the video. I think you can find the Chinese Barbie Around the World doll on Ebay for $50 dollars or less. And one seller is selling the Dolls Of The World 1995 Japanese & 1993 Chinese new in box for $24 dollars together. So I'm finding much better deals and much better dolls just buying the 90s and early 2000s Barbies on Ebay.
Its so sad because I feel like Mattel just want to keep pumping out dolls, so they just keep cutting corners so that they can keep making dolls quickly. I think that they should focus on what made some doll lines like Monster High so well loved, and make dolls like that again.
Yes exactly. Also with their reasoning that they do cheap quality to keep the cost down, then A- what's their excuse for their more expensive dolls like this still being poor quality? Also for those who do have very little money then they're probably only going to be able to afford (or their parents) a doll about twice a year, on their Birthday & Christmas/New Year, so i can see no reason to create so many dolls, especially ones that are generic & boring.
I love the idea, and she's a lovely doll, but $50? Come on, Mattel. We all know you're really reaching on this cash grab this time. She seems to have the same quality as the budget dolls Mattel made in the early 2000s, with the exception that her legs don't even bend. For this price, there should have been more. Or she should have only been $25-$30 max. This doll just isn't worth the price for the quality presented. Maybe when she inevitably goes on clearance and drops down to like $5-$7 because nobody wanted to pay this outrageous price, sure. But not for $50.

And even worse, I feel like they've made this doll before. I don't see what's different about her from their other Chinese Barbies they've released in red Cheongsams before. I can think of two other dolls they've made just like this. So, one come out better buying the Asian Barbie BMR1959 doll (for 30 dollars, they can actually pose so why can't this doll?) and just putting her in a red Cheongsam dress. You'd get more for your money then.
How do I put this: The idea was there but the execution was not. She is beautiful but disappointing as well. What a shame and why are there no upcoming releases for them? Thats crazy to not have something on the table.
She's a pretty doll but with a $50.00 price point I would want more from a doll. If she goes on clearance I may buy her. The song is from The Partridge Family if I remember correctly.
I have the same mixed feelings as you, just received my doll from Amazon, and mind you whoever did my order just placed her in a box without anything to keep the box secure. No bubble wrap or whatever they would use. *gasp* Anyway, I keep reading about how her eyes are too pixelated so automatically that makes it not worth the price, also her shoes aren't even traditional to what they were trying to create here. Maybe they wanted to keep it a little modern? I would love to see real tassels used for her earrings if I'm going to spend 50 dollars for a doll too. And I agree with you, the back of the cheongsam being just plain red is beyond crazy. No Chinese girl would wear a cheongsam like that. They would be a fool. I guess I am a fool for buying this doll since I am Chinese, haha. But I'll still keep it, it's very pretty still.
Totally agree with you she is a beautiful doll but for that price range she should have had the design on both sides of the dress, different shoes and a headdress, and more detail in the outfit and display, and articulation. 😍♥️
Thank you for addressing the quality issue. I got emotional when you mentioned about the previous dolls. Its a part of our life and its just so sad to see whats happening to their dolls now. TBH I'm more of an Integrity toys doll collector now because I dont see anything good to buy from mattel anymore.. I gave this doll a chance but ended up selling her because of the empty back... I dont mind the plastic molded tassle earrings because its beautifully made but empty back?
As a chinese/japanese american and you just want that cute accessory for that AAPI representation and just want to feel close to your culture, I'd say its worth it and it makes you feel good.
As a Chinese I really fell for her face and outfit... Saw it for USD$56 $80 in SGD really really pricey. this is something I really wished I had while I was younger. mattel has always been on the pricey side in my country. I'm 21 now... No one is stopping me
I totally agree with everything you've said. For 25, maybe 30$, she would be fine, but she's on a stiff body like a cheap fashionista doll for 10$ or less. The dress is very nice, but not 50$ nice. She basically just a really expensive fashionista doll, without accessories. I love her face and how she looks, but she's definitely not worth 50$. In Europe she's ever 75€. What happened to Mattel and especially to EAH, still makes me sad. I guess the golden times of fashion dolls are just over. Even if I like RH a lot, they are really cute and of good quality, but I wish their would be more other doll lines out there, like MH or EAH or more elegant fashion dolls. I guess we just need to be thankful for the collection we already have. 💜💜💜
That's really interesting, thanks for sharing. I appreciate Asian dolls as they are often overlooked (even in race conversations) but it's disappointing to find out they didn't even go to the effort of creating a new face mould.
Is there a video somewhere that explains what's happening with Mattel? I'm super new to doll collecting to I don't really know much of what you're referencing here.
I got it for 30 off of amazon! I love it very much as a asian myself i love it a lot! But i wish they added a jade bracelet instead of gold and traditional shoes and a qipao with the design all the way. But she is very pretty and the earrings are gorgeous! That convinced me to buy her
Her face is lovely and I also agree that she looks lost in her box. They could have done an all gold rectangle directly behind her to highlight her in the box so it was not so much red on red. I would get her for the face which I adore but her dress is meh, plain black shoes...a single gold bracelet and I like the earrings but yeah. They also could have given her a basket of oranges or a lantern. (yes I had to look up what kinds of things were used in the celebration.) :)
I am so disappointed with what Mattel has done to what was once such an amazing product and what they currently call 'Signature'. As someone that's been collecting for years I'm finding better quality now in MGA playline and they are getting most of my collector money now. She is lovely, but not $50 lovely compared to what I can get from MGA.
8:27 - 10:05 yes! you are so right.... its so sad whats happening to them, their dolls have become so uhh cheap in quality to the point where theyre becoming dollar tree dolls...
i was comparing barbie fashions i had in my collection the other day, 2000's Barbie had Denim Skirts made of actual denim, with working pockets and drawstrings etc, 2019 Barbie denim is weird nylonish fabric with fake denim effect thats printed on along with printed on pockets and its HALF print. Not to mention all the dresses they're churning out with no shape so it just hangs off your doll like a potato sack..
I have one and really like it. It reminds me of barbies from the early 2000s. Was it worth $75 Canadian no. But that's the exchange rate for you. I like the model muse body and one of my favorite dolls is the pink hope barbie doll, who's hands are forever on her hips. I also like that she has a bit more rubber like solid legs not the light plastic ones that came on the holiday barbie a few years ago. I do think they should bring out a cheaper version for children to play with. So that it is more of an affordable gift.
Wow just wow mattel as someone who is interested in asian culture this is just sad I mean srsly $50 for a doll like this mattel should've added more if she is $50. Also I was born in the year of the monkey but srsly mattel is downgrading their dolls which is sad and this is why I switched over to mga for dolls
I hate when they only print on one side. I love this doll's face, though, oh my goodness she's really pretty! She's doing the "hug the wall" game like Winona Ryder in "Little Women", haha.
Damn for 50 bucks they couldn’t even give her real tassels? And what’s with the black business pump on a dress fashioned after a festival! A motif somewhere of the annual zodiac animal would been nice. It is lacking.
It's sad because Mattel really don't care, even some silkstones from the BFMC didn't have a full printed/embroidered because most collectors never take them out of the box. With articulation is prob the same case.
She's gorgeous-I really love her face-and I'd love to buy her, but she costs $100 in Australia. $50 USD is only about $65 AUD at the moment, so why is she so much more expensive here? I hate Australian retail.
She’s more like a figurine rather than a doll, designed to be kept in the box forever with that missing print in the back, otherwise yeah she’s really just pretty
In my opinion, the biggest issue with this doll is that she does not move. The pose quite literally is my least favorite Barbie pose. No one stands like that. If we can't get something poseable, a more natural pose would have been better for sure. Poseable arms would have made a world of a difference. The print not being on the back personally doesn't bother me because not all qipaos have 360 designs. Also because the back is a different color I guess it made sense to me. I own this doll and I definitely understand how torn you are about it. She's so pretty, the prettiest in my collection (after Jean Grey) but does that alone justify the 50USD price tag when they easily could have done more.
Pixelated screenings on collector dolls???? So sad!! Please Melissa, Subscribers, or any customer... don’t validate pixelated faces!! ... it’s bad on playline but on COLLECTOR dolls it’s ridiculous!! They CAN do better, even $15 Cave club dolls have smooth faces!!! Why does Barbie gets the short end of the stick??? Mattel needs to take these constructive criticism and apply them lime MGA does. Everything they have been releasing has been pixelated, overpriced and VERY underwhelming quality. Just facts.
And the faces often aren't even placed appropriately! I have had to get 3 replacements so far from Mattel because the face on my made to move doll was so screwed up. I've practically given up and am just going to find a proper head online...
She's pretty, but the eye printing and the dress are unfortunate. I don't mind that she's not articulated because I started out collecting model muse dolls for display, but she should be no more than $30 and NONE of the collector dolls should have these poorly printed eyes.
I have a question for everyone, I personally collect HotToys star wars stuff. My mother always loved Barbies, so I started getting her these for birthdays. but I know very little about whats going on. is whats coming out now not good quality? Thank you for the video btw I wanted to see what this one looked like before I got it.
I almost bought her. But the dealbreaker for me was the dress pattern not going all the way around EVEN at the lower prices you can get her for a year later. Still, a no go for me. If she ever went down to serious clearance prices, I'd pick her up. I really don't umderstand what is going on with Mattel. HOW could they be hurting for cash????? My guess is really poor, and greedy management.
Nice doll. They did not need a new headsculpt, they already have one in the Made-to-Move line. They could have spent that money on the body (joints), her earrings, her shoes - and a dress design that exists also on her back. Maybe some more Asian details (I am not Asian, but I am deeply interested in the culture). But that body gets so old. Can't they come up with another "fashion pose", if they absolutely want to do that?
It's not an original face mold. I believe it's the Mari mold, from the Generation Girl line, dating back to 1998. The lack of print on the back is egregious, but it's just as bad when Mattel pulls that deal on playline dolls, or on playline clothes bought separately, for that matter. The lack of articulation is a complicated issue. Lots of collectors, especially older ones who grew up with Barbie in her very first iterations, don't care for articulation, as they find the look of the joints unsightly. Lots of other collectors disagree, as they became accustomed to articulation in other high end dolls like Poppy Parker and Fashion Royalty. Mattel has BASICALLY committed to presenting its collector dolls with the 2003 model muse body with little articulation, but that could be changing. They have made a few collector dolls with the made-to-move body. That trend could continue. When they do articulation, they need to do it well. The transition that they made in the Silkstone line in 2016? (possibly 2015?) to articulation was just awful. Horrible, ugly joints with little range of motion. And the original, unarticulated Silkstones seem to be the most sought after and bring the highest prices on the secondary market. They need direction, that's for sure.
She is pretty... But not for her retail price.
This Barbie is awesome.
At $25 I'd buy her, but not $50. It's unfortunate, as I'd think more people would purchase her at the lower price point.
She might be 50 for y'all but she is 100 for me as an European..:(

The facemold isn't even a new creation. It's from the late 90s.
That's really interesting, thanks for sharing. I appreciate Asian dolls as they are often overlooked (even in race conversations) but it's disappointing to find out they didn't even go to the effort of creating a new face mould.
Which one is it?
@@texbex1468 It‘s the 1998 Mari facemold from the Generation Girl (GG) line :)
Omg I want to add her to my collection!!!!😫
Hmm 🤔 I’m hoping my fave antique shop will have her cheaper 🙂
I wish she had painted eyes and not sticker eyes. She is gorgeous though and yes she should be cheaper.
Is there a video somewhere that explains what's happening with Mattel? I'm super new to doll collecting to I don't really know much of what you're referencing here.
Are you going to get the Maya Angelou Barbie?
Her face is beautiful!
I just found this doll today at a discount store called bargain hunt. I snagged her for 75% off. Not bad for 13 dollars 😝
enjoyed!
Is her face shape any different from the normal ones though?
I got it for 30 off of amazon! I love it very much as a asian myself i love it a lot! But i wish they added a jade bracelet instead of gold and traditional shoes and a qipao with the design all the way. But she is very pretty and the earrings are gorgeous! That convinced me to buy her
Flintstones, pebbles and bam bam sang it in freds dream.
thats the Mari sculpt which is good to see used again but 50$.......ill wait shell be on sale
Love your vids!
Oof She seems way too cheap in quality for 50 :( She really doesn't feel like a premium doll to Me.
She should be atleast 40-30$ cause she doesn't look very good quality in my opinion, barbie extra looks better quality than this doll
So cute
MGA dolls are overrated
@@brianaguilar8283 thank you random guy on the internet who’s opinion I have been waiting on to change my life. I am corrected.
8:27 - 10:05 yes! you are so right.... its so sad whats happening to them, their dolls have become so uhh cheap in quality to the point where theyre becoming dollar tree dolls...
Thank you for the dress review, the dress looked cheap quality, thanks for confirming.
i was comparing barbie fashions i had in my collection the other day, 2000's Barbie had Denim Skirts made of actual denim, with working pockets and drawstrings etc, 2019 Barbie denim is weird nylonish fabric with fake denim effect thats printed on along with printed on pockets and its HALF print.
Not sure if anyone else commented this yet, but that was a Flintstones song.
Exactly
Can u give me a like on where I can get the shelf’s u got❤️❤️❤️plz also big fan🙈🙈🙈
hiiiii i love you melissa 🥺💗
For that amount of money, the quality needs to be much better. I would buy more dolls if they were articulated.
LOL! That song at the beginning is from one of the Flintstones show when Pebbles and Bamm Bamm was singing. :)
She's gorgeous-I really love her face-and I'd love to buy her, but she costs $100 in Australia. $50 USD is only about $65 AUD at the moment, so why is she so much more expensive here? I hate Australian retail.
That song is from the classic Flintstones. Cartoon. The Barbie doll is cute.
She’s more like a figurine rather than a doll, designed to be kept in the box forever with that missing print in the back, otherwise yeah she’s really just pretty
I kinda wish they would’ve put a Ox symbol on the box or dress. I’m a ox lol She’s beautiful I’d still buy her lol
Was that song from Flintstones?
Yes it was.
It seems since they spread production over their different body types etc they’ve sacrificed quality to make it happen.
I hope the Second 2022 lunar new year doll is cheaper, in the pics she's beautiful but the quality doesn't look any better.
Do you collect the Disney style dolls? I can't remember seeing a review from one lol I just got Cinderella today and she's stunning
Wow...
honestly I would just buy the dress and not the non articulated doll
I love scooby doo haha
Finally a barbie that looks like me haha
I almost bought her. But the dealbreaker for me was the dress pattern not going all the way around EVEN at the lower prices you can get her for a year later. Still, a no go for me. If she ever went down to serious clearance prices, I'd pick her up. I really don't umderstand what is going on with Mattel. HOW could they be hurting for cash????? My guess is really poor, and greedy management.
When are you going to do the ever after high doll haul video?
She was at my work so I got her for only 34.99 with my employee discount which I think is a better price for her!
I want to get her but just because she is on sale for 35 now
Been watching the Flintstones along with Scooby-Doo, have you Melissa? I was born in the Year of the Goat, too!
