The first round of 16 game of the Qatar World Cup 2022 saw the Netherlands face the United States of America. The Netherlands won the game 3-1 to move into the quarter-finals, whilst the USA are sent home.
JJ Bull explains how Netherland's coach Louis Van Gaal used cunning tactics to make sure the USA's key players were disallowed the goal scoring opportunities that saw them through the group stages of the tournament.

Louis is and will forever be a legend of the game. Masterclass!!
He managed Danny blind. He was there when his son got on the international stage with those 2 assists against spain. He's there again when the guy is 32 and scores after 73 games. That's some serious longevity
Puli is better but whatever
@@daymiondayski9700 Also don't forget that he had José Mourinho working for him as a translator at Barcelona and then made him into an assistant. He saw potential in Mourinho and gave him a shot at the job.
@@daymiondayski9700 He even won the Champions League with Danny Blind as a captain in 1995.
I guess playing like RATS is a masterclass he told them I want to defend with 8 all game let the USA have the ball because they are not good on the ball.
Van Gaal is always a treat, he's like this mad scientist you can't help but admire. Before every one of his games you wonder, "What crazy strategy has this man concocted this time?"
He is for sure. Also has a history doing the impossible with his teams. Champions League win with Ajax and another final the year after, winning the Dutch league with AZ (28 games unbeaten in a row that season), 3rd at the 2014 World Cup with the Netherlands.
Bernhalter tried to play Ajax school football against the man that coached the golden generation of Ajax in the 90s 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have been watching the Dutch team for fifty years now. They traditionally have an OK midfield and attack, but a defense line that can not always be trusted. So the answer was Total Football: make sure that you are in possession of the ball and attack. As Cruijff said: "There is only one ball, so you've got to have it. If YOU got the ball, THEY can not score." It often results in the spectators being the winners of the match.
Now for the first time for as long as I can remember the Dutch have rock solid defenders, but not the greatest midfield/attackers. So Van Gaal has chosen a different system, allowing the opponent to have ball possession and draw them forward to the Dutch half to create space. Everybody has to get used to the Dutch team playing this (ugly) counter style football, most of all the Dutch press and supporters that HATE it.
Personally I think Van Gaal has taken some VERY brave decisions: playing on the counter with the Dutch team, but also selecting some players (keeper) that most of us have never heard of. I hope he will still be a bit more successful and can thus avoid being lynched by the Dutch press ...
Yeah it seams like the Dutch press has forgotten that our only European cup also came from a 4-4-1-1 system with heavy focus on countering.
Or have they disillusioned themself into believing that it was a victory of the Dutch football school of thought.
I'm Dutch and I am fine with this style of play right now, it simply is the system that works best for the players we currently have. I was really critical in the group stage though, because to successfully play this system your defense needs to be flawless, and especially the match against Ecuador our defenders played horribly, it was pure luck that we didn't lose that game. In the match against the USA, this was different, the opponent couldn't score because we defended well, not because we lucked out.
@@frankvandorp2059 Agreed, this is the best choice for the players we have, and a tough one to play against - if played to a certain standard.
This was the first game this WC that was actually enjoyable to watch. I don't blame it on the system, but on the intensity they played with.
As for compensating for a terrible back line by using "total football", i don't think that is how Van Marwijk solved it. iirc he added 2 defensive midfielders and just relied heavily on counters/brilliant moments from the top players upfront, which resulted in 2nd place in the WC.
Sometimes the coach needs to be pragmatic and say “results are more important than style”. It’s worked for Didier Deschamps
build up for the first goal was amazing to watch
tiki taka at its finest
was beautiful passing but poor anaylsis of it though 😂 wasnt some masterclass tactics thing. CDM simply didnt track his man and paid for it
@@richardinho224 the dutch simply knew how to play the American cdm they tactically outplayed them and outclassed them while not using to much energy
Louis van Gaal as coach really deserves a fifa world cup trophy. His team should help his tactics only three wins away of trophy.
The Dutch definitely worked the flanks well. Louis knew the Dutch had a superior and more experienced back line. They handled a lot more rough situations from the US than I would have thought and the chances that we had, we squandered. The Dutch absorbed well and their counter was absolutely lethal. US had so many chances to equalize after that brilliant goal from Depay, but they didn't, and the goal before half really buried them. The goal they did score was incredibly lucky. I have to say as an American I was happy to see the US get through their group. It's an achievement after the shambles we were in just 4 years ago. But the Dutch are an underestimated side with great talent and speed on the counter, and I think they have a good shot at Argentina in the quarters. US can look forward to 2026 and say we lost to a better team.
Did they really had that much chances after the Depay goal? One or 2 shots outside the box. No big chances, as far as I can remember. Netherlands much more tactical/positional awareness. Football is about more than just running a lot.
@@footballhd1111 they had opportunities but made poor decisions and lost the ball trying too many actions instead of shooting so it wont show in the stats
@@IntellectuallySuperior2U It was said that not playing Dybala is for pure tactical reasons. This might mean that the harmstrint injury he had is still so fresh that they rather give him play time later. I might be wrong but having player like Dybala with fresh legs later on, could prove to be immensively great strategy.
However.. Slightly worrysome that he has gotten zero minutes. We'll see. I hope he gets on the pitch.
As a dutch guy i loved the way the USA played football and i think they will have big succes in 2026. The main problem with the USA was experience and youth. World cup games are mentally one of the toughest in football and you need experience to battle this.
@@tristanr8535inexperienced players and inexperienced coach. Hopefuly this gets sacked and we go back with a good coach. We can definitely go far
Many People forget that Mourinho was the pupil and assistent of Louis Van Gaal at Barcelona. Mourinho is also a master in defensive tactics. The game against the USA reminded me a lot of the games played under Mourinho.
exactly!
So glad to see the Dutch playing a lot better than they were in the Group stages. I still don't think they'll win it though, but I really want to see them try and win it! The Netherlands deserve a World Cup title.
smart teams purposefully relax in groups in order to draw teams like the USA in elimination rounds.
Netherlands are not a good team the USA didn’t show up to play all there goals came from counter attacks and the center back not knowing how to mark people
@@nicholascastro6331 well the fact is the Nederlands are playing on and the US are going home. It doesn't matter what you believe to be true, it is the facts that count. The US got outplayed big time, their coach didn't do his home work and figured out how to pin the Netherlands down. Van Gaal plays for results and that doesnt always allow for great soccer match.
Difference is that the USA didn’t just drop deep. But they did improve a lot.
The whole system is build around being pressed and how to counter. America stood no chance. Against team like Argentina and Brasil the Netherlands will also exploit the space in behind. So the Dutch will perform better against stronger sides
Pure brilliance from Louis van Gaal
Brilliant if slightly painful analysis. I was screaming at Jedi for about 5 seconds, but he didn't hear me here in Austin. But he might have heard my F-bomb after Dumfries buried it. Speaking of Dumfries- he is listed as a defender in the roster which I found hard to believe. Amazing talent. I can't gripe much- Johan Cruyff and Total Football captured my imagination 50 years ago and I have watched them from afar ever since.
Oh man. The way Robinson wanders over to Gakpo and even grabs a hold of him, like, "I'm sticking you!" while Gakpo's triple-teamed while Dumfries is wide open... Just absolutely lost.
I don't know why Gregg took so long to get him out. He was hobbled, and he'd been hobbling the US attack whenever they went down his side.
denzel is not your typical defender, he is what is known as a wingback, assigned to create spaces down the wide area and acted more like wingers that can also defend, but mostly to create attacking chances from the wing
Another difference between Timber and De Ligt is that Timber actually plays more relaxed and less stressfull and agressive. De Ligt sometimes plays too agressive getting himself booked or giving away unnecessary dangerous free kicks or worse.
I love that US saw Gakpo as biggest threat so they kept him out of the game entirely, and the rest of Dutch was just thanks for all the space bruh
He tied up at least 2 defenders and moved all of over the place creating space for the wingbacks to move up the pitch. No goals but equally important.
I'm Mexican and what a horrible sweater... I love it.
I need to know where he got it! Immediately wanted one when I saw it lol.

Agree, and he doesn’t have world class players like last World Cup but he just knows how to utilize each individual so well and create a real solid team out of it. I wouldn’t see any other coach perform with this team what Van Gaal does. He really puts the team at their max potential.
@@ChristiaanCoenen Defense was mediocre in 2014 with De Vrij, Martins Indi, Kuyt as a wingback. De Vrij and Martins Indi had no international experience. Now they have Van Dijk, Timber and Aké in defense while De Ligt is benching. But the difference is that the attack is not world class.

Netherlands were fantastic, very well coached and organized. It broke my heart but it was a masterclass
Ive seen some different things! Love to chat about this if you are searching for some dutch feedback ;-)!
1. Depay / Gakpo defended off the sides, made the 2 central defenders pass in the ball. Meanwhile the 3 midfield players were men to men defending to make sure adams couldnt get the ball. (as you stated) Making sure the central defenders had to try a difficult pass. Thats the pass the dutch defence was looking out for to get the interception. Which is how the first goal was setup. They forced the "weaker passers" into playing difficult passes.
2. Klaassen: the dutch highest workrate attacking player was covering tyler adams the first 45 to make sure he didnt get a ball. (As mentioned, wasnt by accident it was Klaasen and not someone else ;))
3.Robsinson was obviously seen as a weak link, gakpo and Dumfries were just hoovering him, if he got hte ball -> insta pressure.
4. With how they defended, they lured the USA out also. The Central Defenders from the USA felt like they had "space" and pushed up.
5. The dutch team leans to the left for buildup play with Blind, ending up on the right wing with Dumfries basicly outpacing everyone on the wing. This is basicly where they are looking for. If they cant get to Blind, they will try a pass to one of the strikers (usually not gakpo, but Bergwijn &Depay) which are quite bulky & pacy & great ball controll.
1. Depay en Gakpo did not defend the sides. They left free the 2 center backs while everyone else dropped back. And they tried to screen off both of US wing backs. Yes, the 3 Dutch midfielders were man marking instead of zone marking, which is a huge liability if exploited. The US could have created a lot of space on the midfield by drawing away all the Dutch midfielders. And all 4 US defenders would have been free to dribble or pass in. But they did not because they didn't dare to, lacked the skill, etc.
2) The Dutch sacced a number 10 play maker to have a hard working Klaassen to mark off a mediocre US midfielder.
3) Zimmerman was the weakest link, not Robinson.
4) They did not lure the US in at all, The US didn't come. The US central defenders did not push up. They didn't take any initiative with the time, space and possession they were given. They should have, but they did not.
5) Yes, the system benefits Blind. But Blind lacks pace and Dumfries hasn't shown his individual quality at all. Memphis first touch has been horrible the first 3 games. It was pretty good vs the US. And Bergwijn was dropped from the squad for all the things you attribute to him.
If the Dutch squad had put Berghuis on 10, playing to his full potential (somehow), and if they had played full pressing rather than provocative pressing, this game could have been a 5-1 trashing, with the Dutch having 60% possession and the US looking like amateurs. Instead, they gave the US the opportunity to get into the match. Dutch could have beaten the US like Brazil beat South Korea. Instead, the Dutch could have been 0-2 behind during half time, with only 30% possession.
Brilliant analysis. I hated watching it because it’s painfully obvious that we were outmatched in every aspect of the game! 😂
Yep, absolutely agree. I think we played well but severely outclassed tactically and across the whole team. Worse finishing, passing, defensive line, and press. I noticed us getting destroyed on the counter but JJ does a great job showing how that was intentional from Louis. Masterful game from the netherlands.
Yeah, we were all rooting for the USA…but we all knew it would be a hard win….here’s hoping for next World Cup🙂. And that Argentina can beat Netherlands…

One fun thing is that, USA generally likes to play without the ball by high pressing and counters. So Netherlands didn't bothered to keep the possession and forced USA to play with the ball.
I lost my mind when I realised how simple yet effective this idea was
Your van gaal pronunciation in the proper Dutch is near-perfect, well done :D
All three goals for the Netherlands were pretty easy passes to essentially unmarked players. The US did a lot right this WC, but this match was a big defensive failure.
It was a failure bc the dutch knew how to outplay the US while not going all to spare some energy for the next match
A forced defensive failure u mean
@@rickandreae3943 1st goal- five US defenders in the box, two dutch players. Depay makes a late run, dead center of the box, unmarked. The US literally forgot the striker. 2nd goal- Blind makes a good run, but the US defender never glances back, never sees him coming. 3rd goal- the worst one. Six US defenders in box marking three dutch players. No pressure on crosser, all six completely unaware Dumfries was even there. This was amateur hour defending. It's like the US was playing a rigid mindless zone defense but in the wrong zones.
@@mindsai7 that's bc they where outplayed and outclassed. Not being noticed is also a very big skill in football

@@IntellectuallySuperior2U
It was called association football. Soccer is an abbreviation of the word association, almost like a nickname that comes from England itself. (To clarify I mean soccer was coined in England not the US)
There is also rugby football and gridiron football (American version). The term football isn’t about using your feet it’s to differentiate between sports that are played with balls but also use sticks or instruments. (Golf, baseball, cricket, etc.) people get confused in thinking football means you play with your feet but that had nothing to do with it.
Its literally just semantics
Great effort by USA . Youngest team at World Cup . Many positives you can take away and build toward 2026. Netherlands too clinical on their chances . If Pulisic scores early there , maybe a different game . Turner had some great saves or else Netherlands puts up 5 or 6 goals

Argentina didn´t panick. Australia strarted to open up after the goal and attacked a lot, that permited Argentina to create more clear chances. The thing is that after Enzo Fernadez scored the own goal Argentina could´ve scored 2 or 3 gols. The scoreline doesn´t reflect what was the game.

Louis is always the X factor in a game
The way how the US conceded these three goals were the reflection of how terrible the US backline‘s coordination was. I mean just look at the second and third goal. They were pretty much identical. Both Dumfries and Blind had the space and time to bring the ball into the box and both of them just had a ridiculous amount of time to put the ball into the net. Really bad defending. World class teams like the Netherlands will severely punish you at his stage of the game and they did so effectively.
That jumper is insane, love it
Absolute master class from Van Gaal I was saying it after the first 20 mins either we drop Adams to play in between the a center backs to help then build or we take him out of the game and bring in Reyna so we can play more central that way Ferrari wouldn’t have to drop so far back and he’d have someone to link up with
As an american I have to admit we have a system with no tactic. I think our coach has to go. Well done netherlands you dominated. Good luck vs argentina
It's hard to understands ones strategy when it doesn't have one. Big brain. All jokes aside. You guys did good by getting into the next phase. This was just a warming up for the next WC
Thanks mate, you did well. Respect for equalizing against a very strong England!
Tbh. USA did really good !
As dutchmen i was surprised that the USA was getting quite a lot space around the 16-mtr box. If the USA had fired shots from that distance it could have been easily the other way around. Also i saw our goalkeeper saving us quite a few times too as well as the post. So, i don't think the USA lack tactics they just were unlucky when it could have made a difference.
One thing i know for sure is when the dutch team comes behind 2 things can happen :
1. They recover and smash the opponent
2. They completely get out of sync and we lose or make it a draw
Anyhow, the USA was a very strong opponent otherwise van Gaal wouldn't have changed his tactics espescially for this game !
@@tech4u2022 the problem was our roster really. The coach should of called in young players who play in smaller european leagues like the netherlands and belgium. Interesting talk of the press Van Gaal put in place - but the characterizations of the goals are…bizarrely off? First goal: Tyler Adams jogs back behind Memphis who scores (Adams isn’t on the end line) and then Dest doesn’t check his back shoulder, so gets burned by Blind for the finish (again not at all as described here?). I’m a big fan of the channel, but….what am I missing? Replays are pretty clear

Those Dutch counterattacks were very fun to watch
Sorry, what do you mean? The first goal after 21 passes and with 6 US defenders inside the box can hardly be called a counter attack. The 2nd goal was from a throw in near the US corner and the 3rd started from a situation deep in the opponent's half (with again 6 defenders in the box).
everyone is thinking that it were counter attacks bc the usa were standing so high on the pitch most of the time but the first goal of the netherlands was just a build up with high speed ath the end
The last 2 goal attacks started deep into USA's half with us defenders in position, really nothing 'counter attack'.
Esp in the 1st half NL had a ridiculous 30% ball posession , so that suggests counter football , but those goals were not, really

Thank you for wearing that sweater it makes this tactical analysis better as a Mexico supporter
Most Dutch analysts should watch this video. They completely missed that Van Gaal not only countered the USA tactic but also used an offensive tactic that worked for this team. The only critical note I could had on the performance in the first half was that after the first goal the Dutch team was too passive when they had the ball. Something Van Gaal was also seeing. With a two goal advantage he switched to a slightly different tactic in the second half. Bergwijn for Klaassen, Koopmeiners for Van Roon and moving Gakpo to the number 10 position changed a few things. More speed (Bergwijn) in the attack, De Jong playing a little deeper and Koopmeiners shadowing Adams. With Gakpo playing more offensive then Klaassen did as number 10 (possible because Koopmeiners countered Adams) and the speed of Bergwijn increased threat of the Dutch attack.
Berhalter makes Southgate look like Ancelotti.
No CCV, or dare I say Pepi/Pefok hurt the US along with basically expecting Adams to handle the entire midfield by himself....

That wasnt the main reason. The main reason he choose for the US is because they always regconised his talents and always invited him to play for the US national youth teams. Where as in The Netherlands he was never seen as a "top tier" prospect, and thus also was never invited for the Dutch national youth teams; till he to most peoples surprise showed prospect in the first squad of Ajax. He clearly stated in Dutch media he choose the US cause they always had faith in him and it wouldnt felt right to him to just ignore that. Although I do think he left Ajax way to soon, and simular case also applied to former Ajax back Mazraoui. Though I understand in the end the choose for the countries who always had faith in them, I of course hoped they would have chosen Orange (despite Im half American just like Dest).

I think it's interesting to see such a positionless, or at least a varied posititional, game. It wouldn't surprise me if football starts mirroring the NBA, where it seems to become more and more prevalent to play positionless with players who can guard 4 or 5 positions. Adaptibility will be the biggest thing in football in the future.
Ajax/Dutch football have been that way since the 70ties, and within the Ajax academy youngerst also have to play on posistions who arent their own, its partly part of team building so you know how its like of the man in front, behind or next to you screws up. It also helps to anticipate an opponents movements and of course mixing it up makes it very difficult to tracked. More and more Dutch coaches are now leaning more towards an liquid formation, in which they can easely switch between offensive, defensive or a more controlling playstation during the same game. As for the NBA, Dutch coaches also starting to look to the American sports to see if there are running lines or other tactics they can use.
Fleece navidad JJ!
That Christmas jumper is first class mate. Well done
8:37 Have to correct you on that first goal. Memphis was able to get that goal because Adams DIDN'T get back to the box. You can clearly see him jogging behind Memphis in the still photo @ 8:30. If Adams gets there with a sense of urgency instead of going for a light jog, Memphis doesn't get that goal.
But he didn’t so...
@@alohatigers1199 That's not the point. The presenter didn't give an accurate description of where he placed Adams. He was lightly jogging behind Memphis.
I was looking for someone making this point. While Adams had a great tournament, I'm not sure what he was doing on this sequence. He was next to Memphis when the play started, and he just followed him into the US half without making any real effort to catch up and mark him. While VanGaal's tactics were excellent, the main culprit on all three of the Dutch goals was lax marking by the USMNT players.
other goals he poor analyzed too:
2) dest fails to follow his man, he wasnt on the back post like he had him, wasnt an overload
3) gakpo wasnt on the back post like he said he was central and the defense didnt communicate to change assignments. also memphis was between the rb and cb. rb had the near post and the rest of the defense needed to shift over

@tifoirl where u get u sweater?
park the bus, let the opponents cb's, who can't play football to save their lives, have the ball and try and build up from the back, and then hit on 2 quick counters. the whole plan in 1 sentence! also really helped that dest spent more time as a right winger than right back XD
😄
Great sweater, where did you buy that?
fantastic explanation
You are very well informed!!!
But the strikers Memphis and Gakpo were cutting of the passing lanes to Dest and Robinson. With Adams man marked by Klaassen the USA centre backs didn't know what to do cause they miss the technical capability to play long passes behind the Dutch defense line. So instead they dribbled with the ball in to the centre and thats not what they are good at.
Van Gaal did a very good job to neutralise the best player Pulisic. He had the fewest passes of the whole USA team. So the best USA player is the least on the ball. Above that the ball handling weakest players (the centre backs) had the ball the most with the most passes.
Van Gaal is a tactical mastermind a tactical magician. The most important person from the Dutch squad is not Dumfries, De Jong, Depay, Gakpo or Van Dijk. Its Louis van Gaal
oh where did you get that jumper!! need one!!!
Where did you get that sweatshirt?
Van Gaal's cattenacio 😂
Dest did not go wide.. he went in
Robbinson didnt do much at all but he did try to go in... not wide
Gosh the analysis is brilliant - thank you. This American fan hit that "Like" button enthusiastically for this video.
Honestly, this makes the loss so much more bearable... the commentary during the live broadcast here in the States are just dreadful: very little insights, full of hyperbole of what-if and what-not. Someone needs to hire the fine folks at Tifo to do real-time live broadcasts commentary and breakdown the tactics, please.
U.S.A. showed some great potential and were the youngest team competing. You were tactically taken apart by one of the greatest coaches to ever do it. US was playing soccer while NL was playing a mix of total football and modern football. No shame in that, hope U.S.A. can develop into a consistent powerhouse.
Yeah, As a dutch person living in the US i started watching on dutch TV via a VPN, Got all these cool facts like some dutch and us players have been in a team together, Objective commentary on strategy, When i switched to US Television after halftime, i was shocked by the horrible commentary.
@@mcarmine2 I agree. As a football fan though, I learned a lot watching NL picking the U.S. apart methodically. Not the result I was looking for, but nevertheless a really enjoyable game from a learner's standpoint.
@@T8J2124 Oof, I need to do that in the future (get VPN and watch it with other commentary). I agree, the commentary is just horrendous in the States... I don't want to hear someone saying something silly just to fill time. Educate the viewers, invite them to learn to appreciate the beautiful insights of the game; that's what good commentary should do, in my opinion.
@@twpnw I guess by football fan you mean American football. Good on you then for watching and trying to gain insight and understanding of soccer. I'm a Nigerian fan who watches both sports and I desperately wanted the US to advance but after watching for about 15 minutes, I could see trouble. As this wonderful analysis showed, I could see the Dutch had decided to concede possession, remove Adams from having the ball and let Reams and Zimmermann be the play makers... Which was really, really bad for the US as they're not equipped to do that. It was a tactical masterclass but well done to the US. Their soccer team on the Men's side is becoming legit good. It's no small thing to get the Dutch to adapt to what you bring to the table.
That fleece is soooo cooool
An award fornthe designers of those jerseys!!!
As an American I’m just happy that we got to the r16. We played some good football and had some great moments as well, watching this game the team lost a lot of their gusto by the second half. Well done Netherlands 🇳🇱
hahaha great, FELIZ NAVIDAD
I kinda miss the focus on Dumfries who was a key player. Basicly said for the game he was gonna be man of the match fighting vs Robinson! ;)
JJ please tell me where I can get that Mexico Navidad Sweater 🥲
Respect.
where I can buy that sweater?????
excellent analysis, i'm a usa fan, we have a long way to go.
I’m most impressed that LVG somehow hasn’t gotten Daley Blind exposed in 1v1 defensive situations.
Or is that a beef against other coaches for not attempting to exploit that space?
Daley is brilliant in setting up long passes with a extremly well placement. He is also very good positioning himself on the field. His weakness however is that he is slower then most of his opponents requiring backup if he get passed or outplayed.
Thats because the Dutch laid back, so there were no spaces to run in behind for the USA and so they couldn’t utilize their advantage
He gets exposed regularly at ajax. In this system Ake (or someone else) is almost always there to support him.
Like described in this video they let blind push up the field and let him mark either their RW or RB. When hes pushed up we still got a back 4. There is no space to run into unless you overload that side of the pitch. Blind fked up a few times by not covering anyone. Glad we still got aka and VVD as they won some 2v3 situations.
Great sweater my guy
8:52 cheeky behind the scenes info
Our coach developed a masterplan. We don’t have the best players, without a doubt the best coach. Let’s see how far they will reach. Playing 10 of Argentina is doable.
Where can I get that sweater?
JJ Bull is the best
That jumper is a banger.
I wish the us would have played the 442 we used against England
Thats what I was thinking. 3-4-3 might have been smart too
We should have never hired Greg
@@BCNC13 too late now. hopefully he makes the right choice and steps away
Some of the lads may have been a little knocked up. Still a great question to ask GGG.
Why Bergkamp's jersey was replaced?
As a Dutch person I am kind of embarrassed to say that I enjoyed this analysis more than the game…
Congrats for the win. You outcoached, outplayed, and outclassed us.
Not the traditional pretty attacking 433 but effective. Van Gaal knows what he's doing. We'll get far. I don't think Argentina can stop us.
@@mguti090 I think that highly depends on Messi showing up or not. Aké is probably gonna mark him and he's good, but Messi is just another level.
@@mguti090 If I were you I would talk after the game...
@MitoNaÁrea so I should wait after the game to give my opinion that we're gonna win? Makes a lot of sense kiddo.
Luis Van Gaal breaking out the Wu-Tang Block FTW!? Respect, mate. Respect. Proud of my Yanks though. They acquitted themselves well.
You should do a video of the best XI of the group stage.
I want that christmas sweater. Take all my money
And Berhalter had the gall to say that they were dominating the game because we had the first chance of the game and possession and Holland scored on their first chance.
JJ’s been dreaming about making this video after the US man handled England
A Dutch football channel did a piece before the match about how the Dutch system lined up perfectly against the American. So it wasn't all Van Gaal genius, it was also a lucky coincidence NL has been playing 5-3-2 for the past two years, and the US a (very offensive) 4-3-3
They have been playing 5-3-2 (or rather 1-3-4-3) for a while, yes. But Koeman adopted the 5-3-2 from Van Gaal's 2014 WC team after De Boer tried a classic dutch 4-3-3 which doesn't work anymore in the modern game, especially with the type of players we have. So all things considered, this is still Van Gaal's genius :D
@@thelazylama3242 It is not 3-4-3 at all That's crazy speak! In 2014, Van Gaal had to switch back to 4-3-3 during most WC matches because they defensive counter attacking 5-3-2 led to them being a goal behind. And 4-3-3 was needed to fix it.
@@Prometheus4096 I respectfully disagree. The mention of a 1-3-4-3 is based on Louis' own press-conferences (previously and in Qatar) saying his '5-3-2' is more of a 1-3-4-3, as he considers his overlapping wingbacks to be midfielders.
They did indeed swap to a 4-3-3 when behind, but that was mainly due to the relatively short time he had to prepare the squad for his new formation. The 4-3-3 gives more attacking fluency, creativity and familiarity, stretching the field more. This is risky, but needed when behind.
Ok but where did you get that sweater bud, I need it 🥲🥲
