KEY POINTS: THE LIFE AND WORKS OF JOHN HOLT
Amazing,an eye opener and definitely a thought provoking biography of John Holt by Sir Salman Asif.
John Holt was born in 1923 and died in 1985 by Cancer.
He wrote 11 books on child psychology and child education.
John Holt was the first man who challenged, criticized and pointed out the biggest dogmas of education sector at that period of time.
Before John Holt, psychology was studied as the part of philosophy but that was the time when to understand child psychology and to really understand a child were two different things. So, educationists observed and dealt children with theoretical lens of child psychology.
John Holt was the first man in west who not only pointed out this kind of irrational behavior with children but he also made efforts to make them understand that everyone should observe and deal a child as who he is , not with the lens of theory or other false presumptions.
Before going through John Holt's books , we should understand that on which grounds he challenged this whole false theory of dealing children. Before 19th century, to educate a child was the whole responsibility of a mother or society took care of this but for the development and progress of industrial era, we needed people who could work with same pace, with the same mind set, who were not been able to think for their welfare who had weak will power or with no will power, who could obey like robot, who could work on whatever the instructions they had been fed. So for the mass production of these kind of people or in simple words for the mass production of these machines, people of that era felt an immense need to invent a place where they could manufacture their required workers to run their industries,so they invented and designed a place named " SCHOOL" which actually worked on the same agenda like factories did.
After industrial era, in 1960-1980, CAPITALISM, heavily influenced our academic process. Due to capitalism, market forces started to determine the good and bad trends of society. So John Holt challenged this whole concept of capitalism. As per John Holt, children can learn to read, write, speak and to explore everything by themselves if they are not told, instructed and ordered. They can learn everything if they are not bribed with incentives.
Let children pursue their every interest by themsleves
In this regard , he also launched a very big movement in 1971"GROWING WITHOUT SCHOOLING" in which 1 million children were dropped off from school by their parents.
John Holt wrote 11 books. Although all of his books are worth reading but two books are best selling around the world on children ....i) HOW CHILDREN LEARN......II) HOW CHILDREN FAIL.

I watched the video on John Holt’s theory rejecting schooling system which has the prime purpose of manufacturing educated human beings on assembly line just like factories make toys . The way sir Salman explained was a beautiful sketch of how children are treated in the schools where their creativity is diminished like the candle light in the breezy night. Apart from watching the video while attending ERDC classes , we have gone through many experiences of childhood times taught sir Salman that is why in the initial stage we were given the book Learning all the times by John Holt

    Key points:
    • Man is always upto learning about its mind. He wants to know how its think and learn et c.
    • Its become more difficult to understand a child after studying Child Psychology that the child as it is?
    • John Holt is the first man in the west who said the child is different than child psychology.
    • Syllabus is designed to produced an engineer / doctor or labourer as per market requirement.
    • First man who challenged schooling system.
    • The worst pollution is pollution of intentions.
John holt is couldn’t married but his studies was on his sister’s children. He studied them and find more about children. His believe that a child can learn more by experience than in a fixed class. His work was great I must pay thanks to Allama John Holt for such contribution who help us recognize schooling system and their harms.

Well according to this session of sir Salman Asif, children should learn to read write by their own and should not pressurize them to learn according to curriculum or we can say traditional learning criteria i think. And the best thing in this session was about NEYAT( intention) the intention should be pure that is our aim to let them explore the things by their own not for the incentives.

Indeed, john Holt work is worthy of great appreciation and attention. His books are based on his several years of experience in teaching and his research is based on babyhood. In his 2nd book " how children learn", he clearly explained his profound vision, his delightful books are all about the child not about child psychology. It is true child psychology books and its theories limit our thoughts and develop a kind of fixed theoretical perception in our mind and because of that perception we become unable to see a bold, passionate, eager & tireless experimental around us. I think instead of theories we are supposed to spend our time in observing a child and that observation should be judgment free. If we spend quality time with our kids & show our interest in what they like to do or play, talk to them, listen to them, have reflective conversation with them, then I think there would be no secret between you and your child and this thing will also increase an urge for companionship & urge for togetherness between you two. But first, we have to work on building a strong relationship with our kid. But unfortunately as sir salman said, we ignore quality of life whereas following the standard of living, therefore to fulfill that need, we spend our precious time in earning lots of money hence, our kids get ignored by us & we don't have enough time to play meaningful activities or have discussion with them. What we are doing here, we are showing our greatest love of money And by modelling, we are making it possible and showing them to adapt this thing as a value and do the same when they become adult. What i feel Education system can't bring change, this is us who can as parents & as teachers. We parents are accountable for our child's tarbiya & we can't deny this fact and I think in order to bring Change or for the betterment, we need to keep studying the work of great people.

After listening sir salman I’ve found my self in childhood where I also faced these challenges and difficulties.when I have done my matriculation I was unable to decide what I have to choose because I was dependent on my parents and I was confused that what is better for me so same like a child also faced these thing when we made them disable in making their own decision because we know what is better for them and economically what’s make them strong .we hurt their emotion by saying we know better for you and your future Now we are making our children disable in making decision for themselves.Graduated ptcc batch 30

John holt was a great person with great curies about children learning and its changed the thoughts of students of child psychology. His contribution blew the mind of the world educationist and he identify the loop holes in education system in 1971. While we are still entangled in it.

A very informative talk indeed .We always used to consider criticism coming from our scholors / thinkers to be conservative while condemning the modern educatioal system & overwhelmed by the child psychology studies
We owe a great tribute to John Holt for being the founder of this internal critique & helping us in embracing back our cultural values when he considered the bond & time spent with mother is EDUCATIONAL whereas due to the hectic school routines it has become impossible.
I am surely going to study more about John Holt rhe great practical educationist.

After listening to this talk I can relate many things of our own childhood, which i think was much better of today's child. we were more close to nature and surroundings. Now a days we ourselves are running in a rat race and not aware where it will end. Todays schools and colleges gives us a false picture of bright and dreamed future of our children and we must have to send them in such elite school by compromising on all things. For this we are utilizing all money and energy to last extent. If we genuinely think and reflect on John Holt works we can find out it really happening and it can really work.

John Holt was a practical philosopher and a critic of education system. He worked so hard to change the system, his ideas on improving the system can be seen in his several books in which he helped parents and teachers to understand "man by nature is a learning animal, birds fly, fish swims, man thinks and learns". Therefore he rejected the west world view and suggested the people to unsubscribe from the system in oder to achieve your worthwhile mission, I am agree with this point that every child is intelligent, learning and life are deeply connected with each other but problem occurs when we test our children, so I think we should stop taking their test and don't judge them in order to satisfy ourselves that my child knows the answers and he will get good marks in his exams. I think this is the perception that sir salman tried correct through his knowledge.

Who is a person , How he supposes , how he realizes, How his mind functions? This theme was a subject of reasoning. As far back as an individual is conceived, he is curious to learn. A man is constantly curious to investigate about him/herself. Reasoning and brain research was believed to be one subject yet later on it split into two. Training Psychology rose, at that point youngster brain research appeared. Along these lines there came a period when kindergartener brain research was examined as a noteworthy teach. This was not of an awesome help to the youngsters .Psychologist knew kid’s brain science however not the kid. It was investigated in the west where it was explored by the individuals who didn't know of "soul". They had tested their examination on creatures thus knew nothing about a youngster. How might you think about a youngster without being near them. That is wherein John Holt has contributed and examined the general public of one of a kind flow. He challenged the academic style wherein people could no longer reflect on consideration on themselves or have a choice of taking a topic of their own .He challenged the colleges and emphasized parents to send their children for home schooling , where he had to solution educators for this preference. He believed in staring at the child then to study him/her in books. That is the fundamental point John Holt had centered upon. John Holt did not believe in “do as directed”. He believed that a human being who cannot think of his/her own is deprived of creativity.
What we see nowadays in each faculty, college and universities is that just observe the curriculum and turn out to be parrot learners without understanding the destiny. We see most of the parents that they pressure the children to choose Science group and not commerce , although the child is least interested by the problem pressured to be taken. Specially nowadays parents insist their children to take Add Math, subsequently it every so often bring about an awful end result.
Mr. Salman Siddiqui rightly pointed out that rigid educational priorities are only molding personalities based on templates and formats that are required by corporate world. This is pulling people away from knowing themselves “self-awareness”. The prevalent educational systems is not conducive in teaching people to learn about the connection between themselves and others, thus making them selfish and self-centered. It teaches them to only serve their interest instead of teaching them to develop a world in which everybody’s interest is taken into account.
I agree with John Holt to some extent but there is a counter-argument as under:-
The radical ideas as propounded by John Holt and his likes, give rise to an unbridled education system based on the liassez faire approach, which inevitably bears down negatively upon the progress of Science and Technology. The collapse of the Soviet Union and emergence of uni polar world brought about a paradigm shift in the socio-cultural trends across the West, which culminated in the decline in the priority given to education in science and technology. This obviously resulted due to departure from the regimented approach of the education systems prevalent till cold war. To support this argument, it would be relevant to cite the excerpts from annual report 2014, titled Vision For Science & Technology, published by Royal Society of Sciences, a premium institution promoting and monitoring science and technology in the U.K. “The UK is a world leader in science and engineering. To maintain and capitalize on this position, the UK needs to strengthen its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education” 1 , states the report. It further goes on to state that “there is a persistent dearth of young people taking science, technology, engineering and mathematics qualifications after the age of 16 across the UK. Employers report that the skills and numbers of students leaving education do not fully match their needs” 2.
