    I would prefer without a face shell because I don’t think the characters actually wear one under the masks in the comics. Comic book art generally simplifies a lot of details (like the way the nose and mouth looks through a mask like Spidey’s or Deadpool’s), so that’s why the characters have really sharp side profiles.

      @@Bryant721Yeah, I love the look with the mask rolled up so the mouth is exposed. Also it’s easier to take off the mask if there’s no shell. I actually bought a mask and it works just fine without a shell. The only trouble is that when I try to roll it up, the eyes don’t stay in the right spot.
      Edit: I figured out how to get the eyes to stay in the right spot. You just roll up the mask a certain way, so that the rolled up part holds the rest down by pinching it against your nose. It's a little difficult at first but I have it down to a science now.

    1. What do we heat the foam with?
    2. What temperature (if it's a tool)?
    3. For how long do we heat it?

    • @SamMaddie2
      @SamMaddie2 2 года назад +3

      1. I would assume a heat gun, as it's a fairly standard tool among cosplayers. (A blowdryer might work too in a pinch.)
      2. Most heat guns I've seen (and blowdryers too for that matter) only have one or two heat settings, so try one and if it doesn't work, try the other.
      3. Only for as long as it takes for the foam to get soft enough to bend (usually only a few seconds). It should then rapidly harden again as it returns to room temperature.

    • @CosplayApprentice
      @CosplayApprentice  2 года назад +2

      I have another video that goes through the whole build process for the face shell and other foam build as well that should help :) you'll definitely want a heat gun. :). I think you just really gotta get the the measurements right for the mask. I find they're not super noticeable for my suits, but I know some people have ones that are basically like full on helmets and that usually works too, Andrew Garfield's was that way as I recall for the second of his films.

  • @NateThurlow

    I personally really dislike the look of faceshells. Makes everyone's faces look too fake and uniform, which negates the idea of a person wearing a mask.
    Obviously everyone should do what they want at the end of the day, but I've tried face shells (for cosplay, cosplay photos, and when I work as Spidey for Marvel Live) and just never liked how they look. So I never use them.

    • @mad-dash6448
      @mad-dash6448 2 года назад +1

      Wearing a mask is to conceal your identity, so it actually makes it even harder to identify you…so I fail to see how it negates the idea of wearing a mask. Or are you saying it looks more like a small helmet to you or something?

    • @SteveRudzinski
      @SteveRudzinski 2 года назад +2

      @@mad-dash6448 I'm saying it looks like a Spider-man toy cosplay as opposed to Spider-Man himself.
      Your argument that faceshells are for hiding identity would be fair if Peter EVER wore a face shell in any comic, movie, or cartoon. But he doesn't, it's just a fabric mask over his face. So unless you in real life have a really genuine focus on nobody knowing who you are while in cosplay, which is fine, face shells have nothing to do with hiding one's identity and just is about having a uniform face structure.
      Which is fine, as I said in my first post, but I hate how it looks. Because it looks like an action figure with a sculpted head, not a person wearing a fabric mask.

    • @mad-dash6448
      @mad-dash6448 2 года назад

      @@SteveRudzinski I get that it makes it look artificial, but the fact that anyone could wear it and they would all have the same uniform look, means it makes it even harder to know one’s identity

    • @CosplayApprentice
      @CosplayApprentice  Год назад

      Thanks for your comment :). I totally understand where you are coming from. You can do this project without using some of the tools I have such as a dremel and stuff :) A Heat Gun is a must though and you can pick one up for as little as $10 at Harbor Frieght. :)
      I didn’t factor in non-consumables because if you are trying to get a cost for an individual project that would significantly complicate the math without changing the cost that much, a heat gun will continue working after this project if you bought one to do this project and would allow you to do many more, so you would have to estimate all the uses you could possibly get out of it in its lifetime and then divide the cost by the number of uses to see the heat guns true cost for one project which becomes pennys per project. :) Hope that makes sense how I factored the numbers. :)

    In this video, your main camera and side camera are shooting two different frame rates. I can tell because you finalized and uploaded the video at 30fps, so whenever it switches to the side cam, the framerate of it shows through. IMO, just set all your cameras to 30fps. It looks better for this kind of content, anyway. 30fps, and even better, specifically set a 1/50th of a second shutter speed and use "shutter priority mode" for the auto exposure so it can't change the shutter speed, which will directly affect how much motion blur the video has, and by extension, how natural it looks.
    Also, if your camera has an all-intra-frame codec mode (XAVC S-I, not S or HS for Sony, or All-i instead of ipb for Canon), or in Apple ProRes, that's even better. Yes, the file size will be bigger, but the accuracy and smoothness of motion, even WITHIN any given frame rate preference, will be improved. Lastly, make sure that whatever your camera is shooting, your editing timeline is either exactly matched to it, you format the footage to the timeline some way (IE, interpreting it for slow motion, as an example), or you re-encode the raw footage to match whatever timeline you want to use.
    IE if your camera says 24, it might be shooting 23.976, and if you do nothing to adjust or match it to a true 24 editing timeline, there may be some motion artifacts that look like what a CD skipping sounds like. And if you have the choice, shooting and editing in a true framerate is a little better for youtube's systems than a decimal frame rate. Sadly, from all of my research, it seems the only way to get true 30fps would be to re-encode raw 29.97 footage from a camera into true 30. But that's a simple 15-ish minute operation for a program called Shutter Encoder, and even THAT amount of time is for a 9GB, 2-1/2 hour video.

    alternative option that's cheaper, plastic canvas, like what's used for crochet or rug hooking. it can be cut and heat-formed like thermoplastics, and for assembling pieces together you can use a combination of stitching the pieces with twine and then reinforcing it with hot glue. plus, because it's already a mesh it doesn't impede airflow at all. if you need extra durability, you can also layer up pieces of it.

    Eh, "accurate" is sort of broad. Spider-Man for example has been shown several time with more real atomically correct features in the face of the mask PLENTY. Even Tom Holland's first suit aimed more for that look. I think it really depends, if you have strong features you absolutely 100% do not need one. I didn't use one for my first suit and everyone always thought I was wearing one. So personally I hate this notion of like, "you should" or "their the way to go." Like they have PLENTY of pitfalls. Hard to breathe, build up heat, uncomfortable. They have perks certainly, but by no means are they "more accurate" for the film versions of the character yeah absolutely they are. But if were talking to the character they 100% are not, Alex Ross is ICONIC when it comes to Spider-Man he draws his face with human features so like- again I respectfully really hate this argument as a Spider-Man performer of 7 years. I think really just depends on the person and their face shape, and really why are the they cosplaying. If you're doing character work and you got some strong features you're probably better off going without. If you're constantly taking the mask off or posing without because you "look like Tom Holland" or "look like Spider-Man" than obviously they're a waste. If you like to mix and match than yeah they're great, if you want to own a bunch of suits, but don't want to have to pay for new lenses every time yeah of course great, but again I hate this narrative of they're essential for a great cosplay of the character.

      Hi :) hope you are having a good day. :) I’m always trying to improve my channel and content, can you help me better understand what part of the video you are upset about? Are you disappointed that I am presenting an inexpensive alternative for Spitzer man faceshells, or that I am charging three dollars for something that makes that process even easier and faster for anyone that wants the help making it? Thanks for your feedback and thanks for watching! :)

    • @jukers765
      @jukers765 Год назад +1

      @@CosplayApprentice im not upset, is just that you are making a tutorial and then charging 3 dolars for anyone be able make it. kinda just make the video useless if im not willing to pay for your pdf. im tottaly ok with you selling the other product, that one really makes it easier but the pdf with the pattern is the base of the tutorial, and youre just selling it. hope you understood what i mean.

    • @CosplayApprentice
      @CosplayApprentice  Год назад

      Thanks for your explanation :). I totally see where you are coming from. I’m sorry that is frustrating :/. On my end, I spend a lot of time on these builds tweaking them and figuring out all the best angles and shapes to get it to look as accurate as possible. I also plan out the best ways to break up the pattern design to minimize seam lines and everything but at the same time be really simple and easy for anyone to use and follow so that they can make it successfully and gain confidence and have a result they are happy with. After digitizing the pattern and turning it into a pdf I make the video tutorial that walks through how to make it with the pattern so that hopefully it is as clear as possible. I am able to monetize my tutorials with ads but my tutorials don’t get a ton of views so the ad revenue is very minimal. That being said, I also have to pay to host the patterns online to make them available, so after all the time invested, I do charge a small amount for the patterns that will save others countless hours of time so that I can try to recover a little bit of what I put into it :). Also, my goal is to inspire people to take action and make something that they are proud of and statistics show that if people have skin in the game(aka invested some money up front for the pattern) then they are more likely to follow through and use the pattern to make the build, which is the goal. :). Again, I totally see where your coming from and I get it for sure. Hopefully my explanation helps you see where I am coming from as well. If you go checkout my tutorial video that goes through making the mask itself, you should be able to see how I did it and go through and make your own instead of having to use my pattern :). Feel free to reach out with any questions any time! :) thanks again for your response! You Rock!!
