My father first made this drink in 1933 at the downs and his recipe was: first the mint in the bottom f the cup and one sugar cube and muddle slightly, fill the cup with ice and pour the bourbon (100 proof) over the ice, stir three times and garnish with mint, add a straw and serve.
Sounds delicious!
At last, my favorite cocktail is here on the channel!
It's a nice drink. Something different. I usually have them to celebrate the derby. Why not
Very nice drink, Cara Kitten 🐈😬
This is so lovely Cara! Deliciously refreshing! My 2 elderly aunts love the Kentucky Derby and I watch with them and make them each this delicious cocktail! It’s sentimental for me! I adore them!! Fabulous video and addition!! I always love your recipes!! Thanks so much Sara! Hope u r well!! Cheers!! 🥂
Canadians like me enjoy Mint Juleps for years!
"Darby"....adorable!
Haha would you actually pronounce the ‘e’? In the UK we use an ‘a’
@@BehindtheBar Yup, DER-bee would be the most common way we hear in the US.
@@BehindtheBarDUR-bee. DUR - rhymes with BURR.
Wow I love it, since I have much fresh mint on my balcony! I will do this drink on weekend :-D
Perfect drink to have while discussing physics with King Midas.
Your vid is a couple days late. But that’s OK. It reminded me that I have way too much mint in my garden and I need to use some of it tonight.
😁
I know, this year has been on fast forward 🤦♀️
Thanks Cara! This is gonna be really good on a hot day! 🍹 Cheers!
Still Devine, Cara. Have a good one slange
My mother has an herb garden at her house, and a bunch of different types of mint. It could be fun to use different mints in this drink. So far, I've only made it with Julep mint. But, she also had peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, orange mint, and I think she even had wild mint growing in part of her yard.
That’s a perfect way to experiment!
If you are going to be making a lot of them it's worth it to make minted simple syrup ahead of time
Good shout!
I recommend Six to Eight of these if you’re betting on the Derby. Ten to Twelve if you’re actually watching from the infield.
Perfect!
I'll have two of that morning drink please.
😵💫
the derby was last saturday.....oops....missed it.
I know 🤦♀️ May just crept up on me haha
WOOOO!!!! KY is the BEST of the States.
Wait what? “If you are watching the Derby or not.” What kind of cretinous scoundrel wouldn’t watch the greatest two minutes in sports. One that drinks vodka and soda I expect. Oh right, a great video as always Cara. Not watch the Derby, that’s funny.
The drink shouldn't "pack a punch" because it is served in a place and time in which the ice would melt quickly, reducing the "punch" of the bourbon.
The video was posted 1 day ago and the Kentucky Derby was 2 days ago. A little late. This is how not to make a Mint Julep. I have never seen or heard of a "flavored" julep, other than mint. You should use mint syrup (mint leaves steeped in simple syrup, preferably over night). The ice should be crushed finer. I use a shaved ice machine. You don't need a straw if you don't over fill the ice and it's a proper consistency (smaller). The ice should be to the top of the glass, not over flowing. NO bitters! If I was served this, I'd send it back.
Why do people think that they are an expert and anything not done their way is wrong. Yes, your way will make a good mint julep. But it is not the authentic original way of making a mint julep.
The derby is animal abuse. The Jules is a nice drink.
How? The people riding the horses are treated much worse than the horses ever could be.
