Holy Beings Showed Gigi the Truth
After Gigi gave her inheritance to Bhajan, and because she loved Kirtan so much, he arranged for her to travel to India to learn Kirtan from a wonderful Gurmukh soul named Bhai Sahib Joginder Singh Talwara. For the first time, she found herself in the company of real and sincere devotees and lovers of the Guru, Guru Granth Sahib. She never heard a harsh word from any of them. They treated her, and all of those who gathered with them, with utmost respect and acceptance. No one had ever treated her so beautifully. She was starving for what they shared with her.
Bhai Sahib Joginder Singh (his photo is included on this update below, the gentleman with the glasses) took a few of the 3HO visitors along with him to different Kirtan programs in Amritsar and other towns in Punjab and in Delhi. In the seva room on the Parkarma, at Harimandar Sahib, he and his companions encouraged Gigi to tell them about how she had given most of her inheritance to SSS Corporation, or basically to Bhajan. Hearing her story, they were shocked and made very sure she understood that this is not the way of Gursikhs. These people, known as Akhand Kirtani Jatha, are kind of purists among Sikhs and are a bit strict.
They didn’t like so-called leaders or teachers misleading people. They spoke up loud and clear with Gigi, so she would get that point. They disapproved of Bhajan from that time onward. It seemed Gigi’s story had changed the whole relationship between Bhajan and a very respected faction of the Sikh Community. She got the message: taking someone’s inheritance is not the way of Gursikhs. In the presence of these true spiritual devotees, Gigi experienced a kind of spiritual first love, the first time any higher love touched her life.
Gigi became very deeply focused on Gurbani after this, especially Kirtan. That connection continues to be her pillar of strength through all the circumstances of her life. But upon arriving home in Espanola, she was met by a very angry Bhajan. He felt his reputation with the Indian Sikhs had been ruined. He said she had betrayed him, that he was a jealous father, and he vowed to destroy her. In the face of these devastating words from a man she had revered as a spiritual teacher and father figure, she crashed and fell into a deep depression.
Over the next few years, Bhajan made good on his plan to destroy Gigi, he interfered in her marriage until it fell apart. He made her give her children to their father. He even tried to get her to have sex with him, which she rejected. It felt to her like a rape of her spirit. She was suffering and alone. Gigi couldn’t help but wonder, was there anything she did, consciously or unconsciously, that would warrant such malice toward her? She criticized herself, wondering, what kind of fool was she to remain in this cult, to maintain any trust, faith or devotion to him? Maybe her naïveté had led to her defeat.
It is not uncommon for cult members to blame themselves for the bad behavior of the guru or leader. In fact, Bhajan relentlessly gave his followers the message that they were nothing without him and they had many failings that only he could resolve on their behalf. If they left, he told them, they would be doomed to failure, and revert back to what they were before joining the cult - many of them had been hippies, overwhelmed by drug abuse.
In the depths of her misery and aloneness, Gigi still felt the magnetic pull of Gurmukh souls. When she had had enough of Bhajan’s abuse, she escaped in the night, and traveled to Canada with another beloved Gursikh, Bhai Sahib Jiwan Singh. During their travels, reciting kirtan wherever they went, she met a sangat of loving people who followed an awakened, saintly soul, Bauji Jaswant Singh. Someone gave her Bauji’s address, and she began corresponding with him.
Gigi’s greatest fortune came from exchanges of letters back and forth with Bauji. She poured out everything to him, holding nothing back. He was like her priest, and she was confessing everything that had happened to her in the cult, and in her life. His spiritual partner, Mataji, was like her spiritual mother. Over the next ten years, Bauji wrote her around 30 letters, giving her guidance that would carry her through the rest of her life. This experience of real love and a call to freedom was the greatest healing Gigi has ever received.
To this day, Bauji’s words and actions remain with Gigi. She remembers one of his first verbal instructions, which seemed more like a directive than just a suggestion. He said, “Your soul is free. Don’t let anyone limit your, not even this sangat.” He meant this in terms of any kind of group, social, religious or otherwise.
Even though Gigi struggles physically, living out of her van, her soul cherishes her freedom, thanks to the grace of this divine soul. Gigi wants to introduce her supporters and friends to Bauji, a truly masterful, illumined and wise being. She wants everyone to know that by finding the truth, all deception, delusions and illusions fall away. This happens gradually, over time, like the unfolding of a fragrant rose.
She was blessed by the Grace of the True Guru and this freed from a life of pain, neglect and abuse. This is the most important part of her story for her, and a true inspiration to everyone who hears her testimony. She asked us to share something sacred to her, which all Punjabi’s will understand. Her relationship with her true Master, Bauji, is defined by his very endearing nickname for her - Lado Rani. It is hard to translate, but means something like, darling princess. In memory of Bauji Jaswant Singh ji, we are happy to share his photo with you on today’s update. What a sweet and pure soul shines through this being and his partner, Mataji.
