While it is more challenging to find a partner after 40, it isn’t impossible either. The issue can often be more accurately described perhaps as finding a man of quality, character and integrity. Sometimes those old dudes who are available are available for good reason; meaning kicked to the curb. However, this issue isn’t the sole domain of gay men in that the same dynamic challenges heterosexual folks of ‘a certain age’ as well. It’s my personal belief - and experience - that if one isn’t married at 40, one has to first be comfortable with being single and the rest will fall into place organically.
I’m 52 and was married to a man for nearly 20 years; becoming single at 42. (That’s like 84 years old when converted from straight years to gay years.) So I’ve been there and lived the challenges. It ain’t easy. But for the first 5 years I made it difficult simply because I wasn’t ok with being single and made some quite tangy mistakes.
Having fled a 20 year relationship that ended because I got sick and tired of being beat by a drunk, this was learned from the ex who is a good looking and smooth character but a drunk nonetheless. The battered women + one man shelter helped me break free however this came at great personal expense. So even being hyper-alert to red flags in potential suiters, my first attempts at dating could only be described as a epic goat screw. But since I was working the ticket booth, those poor choices in men came from taking anything that came along in the belief that after 40 one just has to accept the inventory as is.
No, you don’t. Nor should you.
So after slapping myself with a wet squirrel several - ok four - times, I just stopped. Set the squirrel free and settled into being ok with not having my casserole at the monthly couples brunch and spouse swap. Once that was fully settled and I became comfortable with being alone, guess what? I’ve met some wonderful men over 40 and made incredible new friends. Like attracts like.
Would love to be married again and know what a real man loves like. Haven’t found the one yet and perhaps never will; there isn’t exactly a booming sellers market for 52 year old bottoms no matter how unique and fun they may be. Or perhaps Mr. White Horse will come a courting and it’s all HGTV and log cabins into the sunset. Either way, I’m ok with each scenario being a path and think that is where hope and contentment is found.
I hope your dreams come true and those dreams are built upon a strong foundation of integrity. Looking too hard based upon the clock of middle age getting closer to a bingo might bring a daydream wrapped in a nightmare. You don’t deserve that simply by way of some analog milestone.
Ok that’s my public service message. Every single person back to the cake-walk and be ready to sit in a man when the music stops or it’s no cake for you.

It shows how ignorant people are about male relationships, that they think there is a "top" and a "bottom." We're men, we have all the parts and we like to do everything. "I'll let you if you let me" has been going on for tens of thousands of years! Plus, both acts are so much fun. It's like owning a hot sport car; straight guys are afraid of letting anyone else drive. But once you do, you realize how cool it is to experience a good man's performance "behind the wheel." Well that was enjoyable, very creative venue . . . The whole top/bottom issue is way to important to some people. I'm in the 19th year of my relationship, though we bet over 25 years ago, and too are about to marry (HGDF!). As for top/bottom, when we ease our way into a "moment," the experience evolves - we're just two men fully open to the needs of the other. So the answer is that they flip flop, and you know what I don't see why most gay relationships can't be like that. As a yaoi writer I get pigeonholed by some of my readers for pointing out that I do strict, top and bottom roles in a lot of my stories. But basically, any story is only a snapshot of an entire lifetime. I just think that even if bottoming isn't someone's forte, they'll try it at least once.

I love you guys!! Dylan, good luck with switching to Windows pc. I've been a Mac user for about 15 years, but I use a Windows machine at work...but, I've never had to "maintain" the work pc. All that's done by a separate group of staff. I bought a Windows machine a while back, thinking I'd give it a try and because I have one piece of software that the Mac version is, frankly, crap. I got so frustrated with the Windows pc that I ended up selling it to a friend after a month. The added software you have to buy for a Windows pc just to make it usable ("MS Office" type software and basic things like Email software) comes standard on the Mac. So in the long run, the cost of buying a fully functioning Mac (with no, or little, additional software needed) and a Windows pc (where you have to buy every piece of additional software separately) really evens out in the end. Plus, OS updates on the Mac are free. If you want to upgrade Windows OS, it's additional...usually around $300-$400.
I bought an Apple Time Machine a while back, which is a combo backup device and wireless router. It constantly backs up your Mac wirelessly, no worrying if you need to back up your files. Because of the Time Machine, when I do upgrade my MacBook, all I have to do is log onto the wireless router and download all my files to my new Mac. It's wonderful.
After unboxing the Windows pc, it took 4 days for the it to do all the OS updates. And I still had the hardest time using it. It seemed like every time you wanted to open a program, you had to type the name of it in the little search box and then hunt through the many options it gave you. I hated it. I got so frustrated with it that I wanted to through it out the window!! As I said earlier, I sold it to a friend. I later bought a new MacBook Pro because my previous MacBook Air was almost 8 years old and was at the point that it didn't have enough memory to handle the OS upgrades. Keep in mind, the Air is not a "work horse" pc like the Pro is. When I bought it I didn't need a pc to do the "heavy lifting" like I do now. I still have the Air and use it regularly and take it with me on vacation because its so light weight and frankly, all I need on vacation is just to check my emails and such, which sometimes is easier to do than using my iPhone.
Anyway, if you do buy a Windows machine, make sure you start using it immediately so you can decide if you hate it or not and need to return it. The return policy for pc's isn't usually very long.
