Upgrading the Rendering in DS1 Prepare to Die Edition

  • I finally figured out how to backport models from Dark Souls Remastered, which allows for normal maps on each surface, whereas PTDE had so many sufaces with literally no normal maps at all. So, they were just flat albedo textures. Plus, it still retains the PTDE look and doesn't bring with it any DSR artistic changes.     This might be my most "this dude is clinically insane" video yet, as I'm sure it seems like a small thing, but normal maps on every surface makes such a big difference imo. It's one of the best things Dark Souls Remastered did. And I'm so happy to bring it back to PTDE. Love you all.

      Dont go changing, FSS. Watching your technical breakdowns, explanations and hearing how passionate you are about games and tech reminds me of watching John Carmacks quakecon presentations. By all means, go "clinically insane" on us.

    I still prefer the art style of the original over the remaster, but the remaster has too many advantages for me to ever want to go back to PTDE (I have both in my Steam library). DSFix was a miracle back in the day, but it could never address the shoddy optimization that led to the frame rate always hovering between 40-60 fps. Even if the remaster had some questionable changes, it at least runs great at a consistent frame rate, and of course now we have your mods to make it look more like the original.

      PTDE runs great if you disable Data Execution Prevention for the game .exe. Stable 60 fps.

    I greatly prefer PtDE, I only play Remastered if I intend to co-op with friends. I tried all kind of graphics enhancing mods, but I still prefer my mostly vanilla PtDE.
    The only standalone mod I'd want for PtDE is for someone to patch up the hole on the left side of the staircase leading to the slide that brings you in the Bed of Chaos arena (I don't know if there are other places where instead of black voids therre are litterally holes in the geometry, it's very noticeable unlike other small places I don't know about but you probably do). I really like the "Age of Sunlight" mod, which also patches up the issue. Through trial and error of replacing vanilla files with modde files knowing nothing about souls modding, I realized that the files responsible for fixing that hole are the "m14_01_00_00.msb" map studio file and the "FRPG_SfxBnd_m14_01.ffxbnd" sfx file.
    After a bit of research, I compared the "m14_01_00_00.msb" file from base PtDE and the "Age of Sunligh" mod in MapStudio. To fill the hole, you basically need to place the mesh of a tree and reference the "FRPG_SfxBnd_m14_01.ffxbnd" sfx file. I was planning to do it myself but I don't know how much time I would need to understand Map Studio and I'm very busy with the game I'm working on. I imagine that someone with the knowhow could fix this issue in a very small amount of time, I would be eternally grateful if someone did it.

    lol I agree the one on the left absolutely looks worse. So next is adding Parallax Occlusion to Prepare to Die? Or is that even possible? I do understand that if that is even possible, it would probably be a huge amount of extra work. If I were able to do these things I would help lol. And yes it's insane but it's awesome. I don't have Remastered, and the way people talk about it, it seems over time Prepare to die will eventually get pretty close to the quality of Remastered with you guys modding it.

    I think it's fine back porting some stuff to Prepare to Die Edition, makes sense to have a variety of mods for it since it's the original vision and it's * cough * abandonware * ahem * which has some unique benefits.
    Also unless you start doing like TikTok dances or some shit, I'm pretty much always going to watch to the end lol.

    I'm super curious how would various DS locations look in Elden Ring lighting. Do you know if there are any ongoing efforts when it comes to porting map geometry to Elden Ring? :)

    I think when they say "left looks better" they aren't considering just the texture, because that's not how non-graphics-people perceive. I think they're saying the *screenshot looks better overall*, my guess is they prefer the lighting since it has such a huge impact on the overall atmosphere.

    i've been wanting to buy ds1 ptde for a long time, but they removed the game from the steam store
    now my only option is to buy a steam key for €260
    and the ptde version looks interesting

    I don't get how people like a lot of remasters, it's like an author taking a good bit of literature and rewriting it with their own vision. Roadside picnics first adaption into English springs to mind, completely missed the point.
    Dark souls 2 OG is objectively better than SOFTS, it's infuriating all the mods are for softs given it's the worst way to play the game. 99% of the common complaints with ds2 go away when you play the original real intended way to play it.
    The original dark souls looks objectively better anyway, the remaster ruined the lighting

    On the topic of remasters and remakes, I find it interesting that devs will complain about AI taking their jobs and not being a real substitute for human created art, but then theyll then go and work on a remaster and have the audacity to go and change various aspects of the game from art direction, aesthetics and even political and "modern audiences" motivated reasons, then blame everyone except themselves when no one buys their games.
