    Timothy Zahn has a Bachelor's degree in Physics so actually... yeah this is probably the closest we will get to a scientific explanation of fictionalized hyperspace.

    Even if hyperspace was scientific, it would still be a ridiculously fast method of travel! Crossing a galaxy in only a month is jaw-dropping compared to how long it would probably take us to just reach Proxima Centauri in real life.

      Right imagine the movie Passengers if that ship was traveling at Light speed Jim and Aurora wouldn’t have to worry about waking up 80+ years too early. Would have been a much shorter time.

      What if we're already traveling ten times the speed of light and traveling at "light speed" is hypothetically only used to avoid objects, anomalies and other dangers around the galaxies?
      (Knowing the Falcon can make .5 past light speed.)
      The earth spins at roughly 1000 miles per hour (1600km/h) and nobody even notices because everything else is spinning with it. The solar system travels at an average speed of 515,000 mph (828,000 km/h), which would take about 230 million years to travel all the way around the Milky Way. However, the universe is traveling at a much higher rate.
      The hyperdrive basically stops you from spinning with the galaxy and everything spins past you, to snap you back into the spin, while all you have to worry about is dodging anomalies. You think you're traveling in a linear direction, which you are possibly above or below the galaxy plane, but not in association with your surroundings. It spins right by you to place your destination ahead.

    This is good math, but there's also an element we can't account for when it comes to hyperspace in our own world, hyperlanes. You can't travel the galaxy as the crow flies. Sure it takes less than a second to cross our solar system, but the only jump point could be a single planet. I remember something I read, probably legends, where it took a long time for the characters to cover a relatively short distance because the hyperlanes were winding and they had to exit at one point, travel for a bit at sublight, and then jump onto another route. It's a bit like old age of sail navigation, although hyperlanes can go both ways. One couldn't practically leave the Carribean the same way they entered.

      @@Tarkburz Old canon ISD2 has Class 2 (reference WotC SW Saga Edition RPG Starships of the Galaxy), while nu-canon ISD1 also have Class 2 drives (reference FFG SWRPG Age of Rebellion core rule book, assuming that the Disney logo on the back cover, is an indication that it follows nu-canon)

    Love this video! It's great to get at least a relative sense of what kind of travel we're looking at.
    The Millennium Falcon is obviously stated multiple times to be faster than a Star Destroyer, with only one point of reference in speed we can't determine how the "scale" of Hyperdrive classes works (other than the lower class is faster, "She can make 0.5 past lightspeed."). I think it's safe to say the scene cuts on the Falcon skipped some time, though. Something tells me that when Obi-Wan was looking for a "fast ship," it wasn't because he was that concerned about taking a 4 minute trip instead of a 20 minute one.
    The other thing to consider is navigation; how many times does the computer have to swerve around a supernova or something? It ain't like dusting crops, after all. Simple logic would suggest that just measuring a straight line and assuming a constant speed will get you a lower travel time than in practice.

    Ah man, this is probably one of my favorite videos of yours! The science of hyperspace has always intrigued me, wondering what rules it abides by and its limitations. I love how you say that it’s basically just movie magic, and it works however it needs to. I think a lot of times, we overthink Star Wars and other sci-fi stories, trying to make every little detail align perfectly. At the end of the day, it’s just a dang fun world to escape into, and I don’t mind some hand-waving every now and then.

    I mean, it's very easy to say that in different hyperlanes the speeds can be faster or slower. Like, Han went into one of the biggest space highways with highest speeds, instead of whatever backwater road Thrawn was on at the time.

    Great video. I like the 34 days to cross the galaxy. It has a practical consequence for travel in Star Wars: the need for food, water, sleep, and a "refresher." If a trip only takes a few hours, no need for sleep, or food and water stores, tho maybe there is waste disposal built into a flight suit. A small ship, like an A-Wing, could do that easily. 34 days, or even half that, would mean a large food and water supply, a schedule for sleep, a refresher, and many changes of clothes and showers. A long journey means a larger ship just to take care of those needs.

    I do like having concrete numbers for distance traveled, however, from my perspective as someone who roleplays. It should be noted that SW hyperspace navigation isn't just straightforward jump from one place to exit in the other in a straight line, but rather follows the curvature of routes that require occasional exit and reorientation, which is why some trips take longer than others even when destination proximity varies greatly. But if we are to take the straightforward route for that travel across the Milky Way, 34 days isn't bad! Especially since the ISD got Class 2 hyperdrive, which means that an X-wing or other ships of Class 1 hyperdrive can do that trip in 17 days, or the Falcon in 8.5 days!

    The Last Jedi actually has a better example of how hyperspace is more of a narrative device than a scientific process. The Resistance ship is mentioned to have 18 hours of fuel left when Rey is on Ahch-To, Finn and Rose is on Cantonica, and the Resistance is headed for Crait. That's three different corners of the Galaxy, but they all meet up in less than 24 hours, when the trips should've taken weeks.
    Hyperspace is just fast travel that travels as fast as the plot needs.

    As to your "why would they fly through a solar system", they wouldn't. But when the new order fleet cornered the resistance at the end of the movie, they were close to a planet. It has long been established that ships can't go into hyperspace when close to a gravity well like a planet or a sun or black hole and if they fly too close to one during hyperspeed, they get yanked out into realspace. So the new order fleet may not have been able to jump in front of the resistance ships.

    Star was ships have 3 modes of travel. Atmospheric/tactical, expressed in kph; strategic sub-hyperspace, expressed in mega lights per hour (.0755 light years per hour, and strategic hyper space (~118 light years per hour).
    The mandalorian used his sub-hyperspace (described as sublight) thrusters to jet off away from the X-wings who were questioning him.

    "Speed of plot" always been used for our rpg sessions to describe how fast things are moving. But I agree its fun exercise to do when faced with abit more descriptions on how things are done in Star Wars.

    There was the old RPG information that talked about the ships having various types of hyperdrives, some would be faster, others slower. There was a multiplier by each of the figures or something along those lines, which might explain why the Millenium Falcon got where it was going faster than other ships.

    One has to remember the key thing in movies, 'It's in the script', this violates all sorts of physics laws all the time but it sells tickets and DVDs and popcorn ! Ever notice few ppl have tried to explain jump drive, granted we know it'd depend on some kind of quantum entanglement but how do you create that at the point you want to go to and that's the part noone has worked out other than some loose ideas about space/time frequencies of each area and so on, then we're entering metaphysics and it gets murky. At some point we need pizza and beer and we forget what time it is and the cat/dog gives us hell when we get home, and/or girlfriend/wife.

    I think there are just wayy more variables to it, Its technology from another galaxy, there are a lot of different reactors and hyperspace lanes. The Star Wars Galaxy got different physicsl laws too so yeah we cant comprehend for us its just magic

    The hand solo jump still makes sense. The millennium falcon is a smuggling ship. It's only attributes are that's its speedy. A star destroyer is a military war ship. That's like comparing a battleship to a speedboat. It's not comparable.

    So, with the ANH example, Han says in the movie it'll take about 2 hours. And while it might be halfway across the map, the Millennium Falcon (0.5 hyperdrive) is ~4 times faster than an ISD (class 2) (maybe more, I don't know if hyperdrive ratings are linear or exponential).

    Heir to the Empire and the rest of that Thrawn trilogy had a lot of talk of weeklong trips through hyperspace that had me pondering if Luke wore a diaper under his pilot suit or had a lavatory hatch in his X-Wing cockpit. I don’t think Timothy Zahn was concerned with those sorts of details.

    Wow, this fits the ISD2 Corruptor's two week timetable(if the hyperdrive was functional) to reach Coruscant from a star system in the Greater Javin Sector.
    If they used earth weeks in X-Wing Alliance.

    I think there's a good point here in that "it should not be taken seriously" just in the nature of it being fantasy. I think it works perfectly pertaining to Hyperspace as a whole, but it unfortunately creates a tremendous amount of inconsistency if we were to use this same phrase towards other elements of Star Wars. A good reference point to this would be the "fuel system" created by Star Wars Episode 8, that isn't referenced OR needed in the entirety of Star Wars as a whole (until it was created for that movie). It doesn't help that it doesn't make sense pertaining to our real-world accomplishments in astrophysics.
    Making stuff up can be fun, engaging, and entertaining. Especially when it's not meant to be taken seriously. The trick, however, is when there's a serious story being told in situations that shouldn't be taken seriously because of the inconsistencies throughout, in which case a separation occurs leading the audience to become confused or frustrated. And it's hard for individuals like myself to be immersed in a journey (or a uniquely created universe) that can't even stay consistent.
    So, I think we need to be careful about throwing terms like "just don't take it seriously" pertaining to fans of the franchise. Because most fans are, in fact, taking the canon *VERY* seriously.

      Fuel was not directly referenced until Star Wars The Clone Wars the animated series, but there have been hints of fuel in the movies since Episode 4 (you can see technicians filling X-Wings with something vía varios tubes, right before the battle of Yavin).

    It is established in Thrawn Alliances that the Chiss refer to their force sensitives as "Skywalkers". The Rise of Skywalker just so happens to be a familiar blue hue. Perhaps that's not a coincidence. Just saying.

    Now, I would like to know how long each trip on film would take in hyperspace -- Luke traveling to Dagobah from Hoth, for instance.
    Also, how does the hyperdrive multiplier factor into these examples. An Imperial Star Destroyer has a Class 2 hyperdrive? What about the "fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy," the Millennium Falcon, which has a Class 0.5 hyperdrive?

    The type of hyperspace engine should matter as well as the Millennium Falcon has a class .05 engine and a ISD has a class 2 engine

    That speed is equivalent to Warp 104 (Cochrane Scale) or Warp 9.9999 (TNG Scale)
    I recently learned that Trek's Quantum Slipstream Drive is at a speed of around Warp 36 (Cochrane Scale), so a QSD drive is equivalent to around about a class 54 Hyperdrive. (Assuming the Imperial star destroyers have a class 2 drive, which they do, right?)

    Star Wars hyperdrives work on a logarithmic scale so it seems the Millenium falcon is several dozen times faster than a Star Destroyer based on that figure. The Venator has a class 1 Hyperdrive so it would take 1.4 days to get from Alderaan to Tatooine. The Millenium falcon has a class 0.5 so it would take somewhere in the range of hours. I think canonically it's something like 3 hours so it more or less holds up.

    We were never told the trip to Alderaan took 4 minutes. The boring travel time might have been simply skipped.
    We know that Hoth - Bespin trip was done on sublight engines. Assuming they are in the same system it would probably have taken a few weeks. The Empire used this time to make a trap. This time was skipped as boring.

    The problem with the whole "hyperspeed is as fast as you want it to be, it's magic" explanation is that it all breaks down when you run with the fact that Star Wars exists at all. Wars--even wars in the stars--require stopping points, bases, and safe zones...all of which relate to the fact that you cannot travel somewhere instantaneously. Star Wars clearly operates under these rules, hence the "Rebel Base". Thus, we can assume something besides "magical travel times", basing it on these simple truths:
    1. Travel time can be cut from story presentation with undefined timeskips. All that matters is the convergence. If the Falcon escaped the Death Star and took two days to reach Yavin, the Death Star which is *following* the Falcon will also take two days to reach its destination. The Battle of Yavin happens because they're both there at the same time.
    2. All Star Wars reference material barely knows what it's talking about. Between Star Destroyers lacking point-defense weaponry ("There goes another one!" "Hold your fire."), Venator fighter capacity, and the length of the Executor, we know a lot of people writing reference books didn't pay attention to the films.
    Combining these two principles, we no longer have any point of reference as to just how long they were in hyperspace--Han could have simply been saying that "we've dropped out of hyperspace at two different waypoints and there haven't been Imperial ships dropping out behind us, so we're in the clear", or maybe it was right afterwards. There was enough time to pull out a boardgame and start doing some lightsaber training, so we know it took a little while.
    Also, I assume that ships require multiple levels of hyperdrive, like "high and low" settings. "High" is what Thrawn is referring to on Star Destroyers: crossing hundreds of lightyears in an hour is the only way to effectively jump between inhabited star systems. "Low" setting, on the other hand, would be essential for making the precise hyperspace jumps over short distances: when ships leave hyperspace, there's a manual action. I would assume that shortly before ships arrive at their destination, the navcomputer throttles the ship down to "low", reducing the speed to several-times lightspeed: even at 10x lightspeed, it would still take about an hour to cross our entire solar system. For precision jumps, you would need a much lower hyperdrive level--the "low" setting.
    It's still blindingly fast, but more manageable.

    d=distance, v=velocity, t=time, a=acceleration

    If we take in account the constant acceleration, the max speed should be just reference of engine max power output. And this output should be put in equation of how fast the ship will actually accelerate and what speed will reach in time. Which if we ignore light speed barrier, is limitless. So from this point of view, the times of travel in those movies could be actually correct?

    You could also say hyperdrive are different for all ships a star destroyer was bigger and meant for battle where as the falcon was smaller and meant for smuggling so it would have a faster speed and hyperdrive

    The thing with using these numbers on the falcon is that these numbers are for the hyperspace speed of an imperial star destroyer which has a class 2 hyperdrive while the falcon has a class 0.5 which is suppose to be significantly faster. So without knowing the difference in speed between hyperdrive classes the only ships these numbers would actually ever work with are ships with a class 2 hyperdrive.
    Though i do agree with your statement that hyperspace inst something that really needs to be explained scientifically.

    According to the NASA data from Voyager 1 the total diameter of the solar system from rough edge of the Oort Cloud to other side of it is 18 trillion miles, 3 light years, this is past the edge of where Pluto is though so adjust your stuff if you deem needed, I'm just sharing the info for you in case you want to consider far edge to far edge.

    Well, there are different classes of hyperdrives. We’re generally aware of the class of hyperdrives star destroyers & the Millennium Falcon are, so go from there & such.

    Actually I'm pretty sure the math lines up. I don't remember where I read it but I remember reading that the trip from Tatooine to Alderaan did take two weeks in "reality"

    In an older video, you said that a Class 1 hyperdrive is at the speed of light. It sounded wrong then, but I'm glad that Star Wars material makes it clear that hyperspace is much much faster than the speed of light if an ISD can cover lightyears in mere minutes.
    You assume that screen-time is real time, but given that Luke got some lightsaber training in on the Falcon, it clearly took longer than 4 minutes and the movie just takes liberties for the practicality of movies and runtime.
    I can happily believe that a run from Tatooine to Alderaan could take 14 days. It explains having bunks on the Falcon, it explains why the Death Star had already blown up Alderaan on arrival, and it explains why the Star Wars economy isn't completely broken with freighters travelling the whole galaxy in minutes.
    Or, for that matter, that the logistics of war isn't completely busted either. If the whole galaxy can be run in minutes, then there is no reason why imperial battlegrounds aren't flooded by every resource from the core. ISDs from Coruscant should have all headed to any open rebel battle if they can make it there and back within a half hour.

    Rebels showed us there is a Space outside of Time .Hyperspace is the Time outside of Space .That is why it is inconsistent .It is relative and tied to the Force .

    So you now have the hyperspace speed for a Imperial class star Destroyer. Next question, how do hyperdrive ratings compare or relate to hyperspace speed? The Falcon is faster than an ISD in hyperspace if I remember correctly, and new canon hasn't changed anything.
    Princes of Alderaan has some very short travel times for the CR90 corvettes and the other ship Leia uses. Coruscant to Alderaan seems to take hours but not many, as they talk about going, doing some work, and coming back all in the same day. They also talk about staying on Coruscant because going back and forth would be too much hassle. Then their is Leia trying to get to Krait before an Imperial fleet, what sort of hyperdrive was her ship using?
    Speaking of canonical is the map you referenced canon still. That one has been around for awhile is it any good?

    I think there should be a definitive speed for hyperspace travel. I also understand that the movies needed to gloss over the time span to keep the movie going.

    Umm, the Falcon has a 0.5 hyperdrive. Shouldn't it be substantially faster than a Star Destroyer?

    One thing though. Those speeds maybe fantasy. But they are the real speeds we will need to travel if we want to do real space exploration/travel.

    1:41 This argument still makes no sense. If super-short jumps are infeasible, The First Order could just have a number of their ships jump to a third point, say 1 light-year away, and then jump back in right on top of the Resistance. They constantly show that they can jump into a location with high enough precision that their ships are spaced closely together without smashing into each other.

    2:25 It's nowhere near 33600 years to cross the solar system at 975km/hr, it's closer to 1400 years:
    Diameter of solar system, about 80 AU or 12 billion km (twice the semi-major axis of pluto). It would take 12,000,000,000/975 hours == 1404 years

    well, maybe it doesn't work this way, but I guess you could use your hyperdrive at less than 100% - making micro-jump much more feasible - thus the First Order could have jump in front of the Resistance's ships
    (also I bet computers or droids could probably launch a ship in and out of hyperspace and extremely short period of time should be a problem for them)

    Jumping for a split second is near impossible anyway. It always takes a few seconds to actually leave normal space and then to reenter normal space.

    First of all, the Millennium Falcon is known for having a very fast hyperdrive rating, much faster than a Star Destroyer. Second, who says it didn't take days for them to reach the Alderaan System? There are such things in cinema known as time skips and offscreen events.

    You know Hyperspace itself didn't make any sense at all because you basically can't travel faster than the speed of light
    Unless if you're entered a wormhole

      Except the fundamental idea of hyperspace isn't about traveling through our normal four dimensional space faster than the speed of light but rather entering and additional dimension within which the distances between locations in "normal" space are foreshortened. We know from canon sources that when travelling through hyperspace you are not interacting normally with what we think of as the physical universe, however the mass shadow created by objects within that universe are capable of pulling you out of hyperspace and back into our regular four dimensional spacial realm. As to whether or not any of this might even be possible, it depends on how much credence you give to things like superstring theory which suggests there are currently a total of ten dimensions in our universe because of the way superstrings warp time and space around themselves.

    When you talked about the trip from tatooine to alderaan taking 14 days, did you keep in mind that the MF did have a faster hyperdrive than the ISD?
    If my following calculations are right, this should show how long the trip to alderaan would be:
    Hyperdrive Class 2: 14 Days
    (Star Destroyer)
    Hyperdrive Class 1: 7 Days
    Hyperdrive Class 0,5: 3,5 Days
    (Millenium Falcon)
