My right knee is bad, but I can’t use my cane on the left side because that shoulder is injured. Any tips for when you must use the cane on the side with the bad leg?
@@AskDoctorJo please do a video about how to carry a purse and a cane. I'm in a state away from my mom so can't lug her purse all over with her all the time! Thanks!
Unfortunately, my doggo has been horribly bored since I tore alignment in my foot. She’s way too strong and big at 92lbs for me to walk her with a cane.
@@darquequeen2323 have you tried a trucking Pole? I bought a green one at Walmart and then a sturdier one on Amazon. However I cannot remember the brand. I like the handle on the Walmart tricking Pole better, but the other Trucking Pole seems sturdier. They were only about $20 for a pair the Walmart Trucking pole was $10 online at Walmart.
Hi Doc. You are truly AMAZING. I "accidentally" came upon your channel, and went in search of hip and leg pain. Guess it's a tormenting Sciatica. I use a cane and most of the time ONE CRUTCH. The severe burning pain is on my right hip and goes down to my knee. I ALWAYS hold my "weapon" on my right side. Never knew why it hurts me more until I WATCHED THIS HEALING VIDEO. The height of my cane is WRONG as well. I understand why I am in agonizing 🤣pain. You saved me from a storm. I hope I don't have to get this painful injection into my spine again. Thanks for your help. And thanks for sharing and caring. 👍👍👍💕💕💕
I started using a cane for pain in my legs, but now I use it mostly for balance and I cannot tell you how many times it saved me from falling on the ground and getting a worse injury than just a pulled ankle.
i recently had to get a cane to help with my worsening hypermobility, but i was completely lost on how to use it. this video helped me in record time, thank you. ❤
Thanks Dr. Jo! I injured my right knee yesterday and got a cane overnighted from Amazon but couldn't figure out how to use it. Your video helped greatly!
As a person who has had scoliosis since 2019 and has worsen. My lower back, hips, and legs have been hurting more as the scoliosis has progressed. Would you recommend a walking aid to help my leg pain or a different option?
Hey, I had a gunshot wound to my lower left leg where the bullet passed straight through. It broke my tibia and fibula bones, and I had to undergo surgery where a rod was inserted in my tibia bone. However, like a week after the surgery, I noticed when I stand to use my crutches I feel major tightness in my injured leg it almost feels as if it's swelling instantly, but when I lay down and prop my leg up again the tightness starts to go away. I was wondering if this is part of the healing process or something that I should be concern about?
Does it just feel like there is a lot of swelling or is there actually a lot of swelling? It's usually pretty normal to feel like that because the swelling and fluid from the surgery/injury is just following gravity. But if you are getting a large amount of swelling, you probably want to check in with your doctor.
I am 3 months post op tibial plateau fracture, and the bone in the front of the leg. I was told by surgeon 10 days ago that I am now weight bearing as tolerated. I have been in physical therapy, but had to stop because of the financial burden I am under now. I am doing well, have been walking in the house without any support, but after watching your video, I think I may need to slow it down and make sure my gait is correct and strong before I throw the crutches away! I am a first grade teacher and am going back to work in a week!! I think I need to back up and do one crutch or a cane. Does it make any difference which one I use? Should I use one crutch, then a cane? Or do I even need a cane if I do okay with one crutch? (I am a 65 year old female, in good shape-I have been working out at the gym doing the machines for 10 days, I can feel myself getting stronger every day). I don't want to mess this up when I have done so well so far! thank you!
Hi. All your videos are amazing. I have a question if you could answer. How a stroke patient would overcome an obstacle in his way using a cane. I mean what would be the gait pattern.
Thanks. It's the same pattern using the cane on the opposite side. If the patient needs a quad cane, a step to instead of step through pattern might help.
I can definitely say from experience that using a cane incorrectly is not comfortable and makes your body hurt. Unfortunately I had to use it incorrectly because I had a brace on my right leg and a broken left arm. So I had to lean into it to take off the pressure on my leg. Crutches or even a walker was not possible.
i always ask for plastic bags for the handles, and to have EVERYthing put in a bag. then depending how heavy or awkward the bags are i put them on my non-cane arm and up i go. take refri/freezer stuff first so if u get tired you can rest in between loads. if I'm really having a wobbly day i will not carry anything in, but either wait til next day, or call one of my daughters to come and help.
Please tell me how I can strengthen my knees they are both bone on bone . My balance is bad I use a walker all the time. I lost a lot of weight years ago I also have been a waitress all my life. (retired now) I am still trying to lose more weight hoping that will take more pressure off my knees. I have had so many surgeries, I really do not want to have any more if I can possibly avoid it.. Please tell me what will help my balance and make my legs stronger so I can get around better and do a few things in my life before I die. Will putting weights on my legs and lifting them make them stronger? Any suggestions that you have will be so appreciated. Money is definitely a issue here. (I don't have any ha) but I am willing to do anything that is free like walking , exercising, etc Anything you can suggest which ever video you have that you think might help me just let me know I will watch and practice. Thank you so much.

.....crickets.....
The people I really admire are the ones who are able to hold a walking stick in one hand, and a dog leash in the other ! 🐶
My dogs would have none of that! I would be on the ground with road rash before I knew what was happening :-)
I’m blind, so I have a long white cane in one hand, my support cane in the other. Lots of coordination going on! 🦯

I have a badly injured ankle should I walk with crutches or a cane
What about people with Parkinson’s?

That's pretty normal. Some compression socks might help with that.

One crutch should be fine instead of a cane.
I crushed a toe and do not have a cane..so I’m using a baseball bat. Is there anything that I should change?
if u have a few dollars, you might look at thrift shops. i got my first cane at one for 10$ instead of the 30+ they were at bigbox.
What about using a walking stick (or 2) to help with balance for bouts of vertigo or dizziness? Is the use of 2 taller sticks vs a cane beneficial?
They can sometimes give a little more balance.
Any tips on overcoming embarrassment while being a person in school using a cane? (I injured my back and need a cane to help me be mobile)
Maybe try decorating it, stickers, paint, etc. Make it fun!

Sorry to hear. Sometimes you have to make an exception, but you are right that it ends up making other things hurt!
how do you carry your groceries up the stairs while using a cane?
