"Big In Japan" by Tom Waits from the album 'Mule Variations'
Lyrics
I got the style but not the grace
I got the clothes but not the face
I got the bread but not the butter
I got the winda but not the shutter
But I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan But heh I'm big in Japan
I got the house but not the deed
I got the horn but not the reed
I got the cards but not the luck
I got the wheel but not the truck
But heh I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan
I got the moon I got the cheese I got the whole damn nation
On its knees I got the rooster I got the crow
I got the ebb I got the flow
I got the powder but not the gun
I got the dog but not the bun
I got the clouds but not the sky
I got the stripes but not the tie
But heh I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan
Heh ho they love the way I do it
Heh ho there's really nothing to it
I got the moon I got the cheese
I got the whole damn nation on their knees
I got the rooster I got the crow
I got the ebb I got the flow
I got the sizzle but not the steak
I got the boat but not the lake
I got the sheets but not the bed
I got the jam but not the bread
But heh I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan I'm big in Japan
I'm big in Japan, I'm big in Japan.

When my son was eleven months old, he went deaf. He had a major surgery to try to restore some hearing. They asked us to keep sound to a minimum while he was healing. One day, I turned this song on very softly. Suddenly, he squealed and crawled over to the stereo, pulled himself up and started dancing. That's when I knew the surgery was a success and my baby could hear! Every time I hear this, I see that eleven month old baby, standing there with a huge smile and dancing, because he could hear the music!
Wonderful wonderful wonderful.. he gives me hope. your kid is special beyond, and nuff said. Big luv....
Beautiful story.
I was deaf from 3 o 13. It was tough,
That's awesome.
Nice 😊
I like that Tom Waits creates original music and does not just pump out formulaic songs.
Guitar, bass and drums in this one were basically recorded by the Brown Album/Antipop era Primus: Les Claypool, Larry LaLonde and Bryan Mantia
Damn never knew that, explains a lot, they work so fucking great together. Wish they'd do a full collab project someday
They both also helped out with Hank3 on his ghost to a ghost album. I got to hear them test out the songs on people in person before it’s release. For a private performance of just family and friends in Nashville.
Super weird that I first heard Tom Waits on a Punk-O-Rama compilation, but I'll take it. I got there by whatever path I needed to take.
Yo, the one with the kid with the shiner and bandages that I assume he received in the mosh pit.
I heard Waits through my dad first and then when I found that comp CD I was like "huh".
He does fit in the punk ethos through his steadfast attitude against the establishment and never letting others dictate his music or life.
@@davebeach2343 exactly!
I grew up with really limited access to music and my folks forbade comic books, so naturally as soon as I got to college I listened to anything I could get my hands on and discovered I loved comics. This was long enough ago that Mike Mignola was still drawing Hellboy stories, and in a little interview thing, he talked about how Hellboy was very Tom Waits, how the character probably listened to Waits. And I thought huh, let's see who this Tom Waits dude is - and got a copy of Bone Machine. I've been hooked ever since.
Tom Waits can not make a bad song!!! The man is AMAZING!
There's just not enough people in this world who appreciate our Tomcat
Hey, he's big in Japan
There is exactly the right amount
Tommy the cat is my name. And I say unto thee.
Few artists make great albums. Even fewer make perfect albums, and most, if they do make one, make only one. This is a perfect album, and Waits has several. There has never been anyone like him, and there never will be again. Enlightenment attained, the cycle of Samsara, broken completely free. We can only sit at his feet staring at an inner smile, a dream of learning.
Got the rooster, got the crow - yeah this rocks!
Love this song
Great album. This album proved to be the catalyst for buying the Tom Waits back catalogue back in the day. Thank you.
When I had my shop all to myself at 5:00 a.m. I'd crank this up to start my day!
I was usually the first person coming in to every restaurant I've worked at, as the baker. I would do like you since I had at least two hours before others came in. The absolute freedom to create the sound and mood to get through the day was an essential aspect for my choice to be a baker. Work alone for part of the day, playing whatever I needed to hear, doesn't get much better, except for the wages.
I’m getting a lot of Tom Waits in my feed without any context as to why and what for.
....not a bad thing. 😉
Because he's great. 👍
Just enjoy it!
Love this album....well all his work really 🤙🏼
Sittin' around reprising this masterpiece with endless inspired verses for posterity. Pass the time.
Take us all on back Mr. W.~
"I have all these beautiful thoughts on my mind and nothing to pale them by except for most things my eyes see."
,dan'
True words too
Number One!
Thank you.
"The wreck of the Weaverville stage..." I never noticed that specific lyric before. I have family that lived in Weaverville for a number of years. Nice little town, I miss visiting I'm the summer.
Classic & Timeless & Priceless=] You can always count on Tom Waits for some levity
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM !
Beautiful, it’s got everything you’d want from a Beefheart kind of thing, and then it’s got slam, oh wow
This song is so cool because when I played magic the gathering and won a couple big tournaments my decklist in a small way made me big in japan for a bit lol 😆 and couple other places
Tom waits and his nameless band(Primus)
Such a great image... Such a great album... Xxxxx
BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA MADE ME GO HERE
AFTER WATCHING HIS GUESTINGS AT THE LATE SHOW W/ DAVE
When the captions kick in, they read: "Bluesy rock music." I guess that's... sort of right. But it does such a poor job of explaining what you're listening. to.
I've always wondered... is he really big in Japan?
& in Louisiana.
Big in Japan ✌️
Dis hard 🦾
Primus backing him on this track...

I wonder if he was big in Japan?
Loved this Album when it came out in 1999. It started in me on big Tom Waits trip.
😎
Haha mine's technically big in Japan too ;-) haha
Tom ;*
Fuck. Yes.
...well hey fairy god~father tom, bert loves ya as well.,...
Alphaville cover?
Won't lie I'm not hip to Tom waites music but this track is chill . So what he is musician turnt actor , or what ,actor with music on the side? What is he about mostly
He's a musician mainly.
Primus backing him on this track. Good partnership.
Old comment, but he started out mainly as a jazz/blues musician before getting into acting and experimental music. He's also written music for movies and theatrical plays as well.
Lyrics
Дитё кукурузы, смеюсь, прости.
Is the rumor true, at all - WHEN can we see what #ZoetropeStudios has of “the Shep” cuts from #TheOutsiders? Any truth to this? #TaEverlasting
💉😘✌️
This song is very Tom Waits, but at the same time sounds like a hybrid of David Lynch and Rob Zombie.
B E E F H E A R T vocals too
the voice may be but for me is too much Morphine
The band playing is primus
piggy yepin'
Japanese clothing sizes are absurd

Woo, ship sure boss, ⛱ball punkin wired dauschound tripe about treats lousy pew put put grandma benevolent placebos stairs 2 b sure and then....
музыка полное говно.
I guess your into modern auto tuned crap,, that's more fake then any part of your girl Sexy red? Again 2 pencils can fix your problem and maybe if your lucky, age to will help. The lyrics must be to complicated for you? Rather sad really.
this is the worst Alphaville cover ive ever heard
