Perhaps before they were hunted to near extinction and had a wide range of territory, if a mother rejected her young we could have allowed that. But their numbers are far too few.
The keepers must find that cool. Its not every day people can teach pandas not just how to feed themselves, but also indirectly teach the pandas to copy the mannerisms of the keepers. Pretty cool.
Don't foget you're rasing a panda that will imitate everything you do, the fact that this is the only behaviour the panda exhibit to be abnormal is an indiciation of their dedication.
