Removing an Old Tabique Stud Wall (and Kitten Update)

- The upstairs work to replace the old floor continues… The next stage of the project is to remove an internal stud wall that originally separated the small upstairs kitchen from the room with lots of windows at the top of the stairs.
This wall is not supporting the roof above and is built in an old Portuguese construction called tabique. A series of wood uprights sit between a floor plate and a wall plate - much like a modern stud wall but much more sturdy and without any insulation. The wall was covered in wooden laths and lime plastered over.

Guys, you melt my hart with your kittens. Tricoloured cats (un Spain web called carey cats) are overwhelmingly female. Only about one in 3,000 is a male. I know how much attention, care, and patience they need. And I am pretty sure you are doing the best and beyond.

The kittens...Just wonderful and thank you for caring. I groaned when you took the lath wall down it looked so good but now it's been opened up I can totally see your reasoning behind it. Having so many windows in the space is a treat and I can picture the staircase / log burner [kitten room] lol. I have scoured YT for reno's involving lath and plaster construction/repair and your the only people who have done it. Great informative channel and a lovely couple.
Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of lath and plaster repair work to come … all the remaining internal walls upstairs. We’ll have to cut new laths for them, but they’ll all be done the old way 😃
Kitten duties after hard physical labour--good idea!
These kittens look absolutely adorable. Will it be easy to find a home for them? Pity you're so far away. I lost my cat recently. She was part of our family for 19 years and a home without a cat feels just wrong.

Calico cats are always female. Orange cats are usually male, but not always. I love calicos and would take one if I didn’t already have three formerly feral cats and live in the U.S. I love that you will take care of them. I trapped many cats over the years, neutered, vetted, loved them. I still work with the Humane Society making cat toys that they sell to support the dogs and cats. Thank you for caring and helping.

I enjoy these videos because we see what needs to be done with each project, and the two of you actually doing the work! There are videos of people in similar situations whom I would call "dabblers", who do little bits on camera, while the rest of the work either was already in place or magically appears.
I presume that with a functioning heat pump you might plan to spend next winter in the lower floor of the house rather than in your tent.

Yes, once the heat pump is in the plan is to make the downstairs as habitable as possible. However we’ve had a couple of curveballs thrown at us recently so we might need to change plans a little

KITTENS !!! Yup been there , done that! Here in France I have rescued ,raised and rehomed several, also kept quite a few 😻. Mostly try to limit the indoor cats to three (very difficult) trapped the outdoor (feral) with humane cages, very successful. Have a great relationship with our Vet ! I think we must have funded the recent renovation of the surgery !! I always know when new kittens are on the horizon as I dream about them, weird I know but true. As a rule gingers are usually male and calico are usually female, but of course there’s always an exception. Might you be keeping one or two ? Calicos are very lucky and also affectionate. One month after buying our renovation near Poiares we discovered 4 kittens and a Mamma cat. That was two years ago. Lots of cuteness, delay, stress and costs, but what you gonna do ! All our 5 still around using the place like a hotel. Congratulations and sympathy, we haven't been on holiday together since. But well done.
The tiny cats are lovely. But they take a lot of time to be well treated. At tis point is better to take care of them. Your orher projects can wait a little 😊

That IS a lot of kittens! I hope the vet takes mercy on you and gives you a break on their medical care. I'm sure you already know they should all be neutered or sterilized, otherwise you'll be literally crawling with cats!😳 Quickly. On the building saga, I do like the open space and I think you will to. 5 years sounds like you have plenty of time to think it over.
