  • We're making progress on our Portuguese stone building renovation. Our long-awaited parts for the underfloor heating system have arrived and it's time to crack on with the install.
In this video we lay all the pipe and connect it back to the manifold. But, as usual, not everything goes to plan. Join us for some good times, some relaxing timelapse and some good old fashioned frustration.

I love the underfloor heating that my husband and I installed when we built our house 28 years ago .🏠 It makes such a difference when the warmth comes from below , not from a radiator .
I' m sure you' ll also be forever grateful for having gone through all the trouble . 😜
    Keep up the spirit !

I have suffered the pain of sore knees due to having to kneel - stiff back and overweight . Protecting your knees is important for later life. I found out too late. Best thing I ever found were Lidl/Aldi trousers with pockets for knee pads. Saving on constant moving of a 'kneeler' of some sort and always there for that unexpected need to kneel. I enjoy every minute of your vlogs and greatly admire your willingness to show the building process warts and all. You are one of the easiest most enjoyable vlogs to watch due to your laid back style quality of presentation. Many thanks for allowing us to follow along.

I hope you don't mind me questioning the use of PTFE tape on your compression fittings . The tape will prevent you tightening the nut . It looks like the seal is made by the o ring & the ferrule crimping the plastic pipe , Not at the thread , like it would be on a tapered thread , where you would use PTFE tape .

Good choice to go for the underfloor heating.
I have a remark for the pipe connections: The system with internal thule and conical ring outside the pex will seal between the pex and the liner and conical ring. Do not put tape on the thread, because it limits the force between the sealing components.
Thanks for all your video’s and greetings from The Netherlands!

Someone's done their homework properly regarding the patterm of the pipes, I got underfloor heating with water pipes and another advantage is the soft shift perceived when the system regulates the amount of heating required. Also there's no drafts or cold spots using traditional wall mounted heating elements.
Another benefit is no need for slippers or even socks making your morning coffee, warm and comfortable floors. The sight of bare hobbit feets is easily avoided by not looking down, your view should always be onward and up. Keep up the good work!

Great video. Just a thought - many years ago I installed underfloor heating which keeps us warm some 20 years on but I did not plan the bathroom installation that well - I kept the heating pipes too far away from the toilet bowl and everytime you use the toilet your feet are standing on a cold section of floor. It bugs me 20 years on especially in the middle of a really cold night. Good luck and thanks for sharing. By the way over the years I have settled on leaving the underfloor on 24/7 on the meanest low setting ever - it really works and is cost effective.

Have you thought about a rooftop wind machine? The newest ones are not that expensive, (in the US, they are a quarter of the price of solar) need only 3mph to work, is housed in a box like structure so birds cannot fly into it & are just as efficient if not more efficient than solar. You could put on one of the outbuilding so not to desecrate your beautiful old stone house. Worth looking into & planning for the future.

Hey guys great work, don't bother with the PTFE on the manifold it wont do anything to stop leaks, the olives in the pipe it what seals the pipe from leaking the PTFE on the threads just makes it harder to tighten the nut with no gain or benefit.

Maybe the water can be passed through a direct sunlight heating system, maybe just a bunch of black pipes inside a box, before any active heating element. Plenty of cold days in Portugal are sunny. Maybe would have to be bypassed when not enough sunlight, some valve/relay controlled by a light meter perhaps?

At 15:48 I don't think that you need PTFE tape on the threads of those fittings. They appear to have either an o-ring or a taper on the inside so there is no need for tape on the thread, it just makes it harder to put together and get a good seal. I am not familiar with those particular fittings, but have done tons of other brass threads and fittings. if any of these joints leak during testing, I'd take the tape off before re-tightening. Love your videos, thanks...

Outside unit, with an inside storage tank? Any thoughts on adding an evacuated tube solar water panel to get the solar assist on sunny days? Pretty efficient water heaters. Finally, once you get this dialed in, this will be a great heating system. Nicely done and thanks so much for all you guys do for the channel.

Do the manifold instructions say to use Teflon tape on the pex>manifold connections? The brass nuts look like compression fittings, which don’t rely on the pipe thread for making the connection water tight. Thx! Eric.

Heat pump is a great way to produce hot water and cheap I have had a ground source for 20 years it works great. Solar evacuated tubes are also a cheap energy source but may not be too cosmetic in your area. Cheers job done.

It runs all day, thermostat is set to 21 degrees in living room, 23 in bathroom. The living room section draws about 3,500 Watts. We're still collecting more use data but normally runtime would be from November to March only. We complement in bathroom with infrared ceiling panel. So far we're quite happy, the response time is minutes which we like most.

You just may have presented the solution to heating the "tiny house" we will be renovating in the near future. We found some good information about retrofitting under-floor heating from below an existing floor (from the basement). We will be following your excellent example of thoroughly researching this possibility. It would not have occurred to us if we hadn't seen what you are doing. Thank you!

There's always something not fitting when you're doing a project, is kind of Murphy's Law. But well, the structural part was completed, let's hope everything works well after. Have a great weekend!
