I always wondered how there wasn't a massive performance hit with all those absurdy-high-poly models on screen I guess culling out the arms whenever they're not in use will do the trick

As a 3D artist, I can actually maybe answer this one. Generally speaking, when you model a humanoid character, you want symmetry across the features when you start (two arms, two legs, two eyes, two ears, etc.), but trying to manually make both sides symmetrical is asinine (see: "drawing the other eye" and then multiply that by a magnitude cuz you're working with a third dimension as well). So what you do is: You create half the model and then mirror it. Then, usually, you would attach the two halves and do finishing touch-up work, then treat the whole thing as one model when you go into rigging. However, because you only barely see Leshy, it makes sense that they'd just model a head, and then model both halves of the body (ie. the arms) and not bother to combine any of it. It makes it easier to hide the arms in the darkness if they're just not there, and it's better optimization to only render the relevant bits when necessary as opposed to having all the graphics rendered at once. All the talk of optimization, though, I feel like it was moreso just an easier way to have the player be incapable of seeing what Leshy looks like in the dark. Yes, it is technically better optimized to have the arms render in and out, but the amount of difference something that minute makes on your gpu... eehhh... I think the developer just wanted to make sure the player had a feeling of unease and distrust towards Leshy in the first act of the game, and making it so that he is literally impossible to see, always tucked away in the shadowy corner of his hut, with his invisible limbs, works wonders for that theming. If his model was physically there in the darkness, even with the lighting absolutely as dark as it could be, players with high gamma/contrast/brightness settings would still see the outlines, or even some details, because 3D graphics engines and lighting are tricky that way.
don't need to animate what you can't see i guess. same thing with the walls. i would have assumed it's just a plain ol' wood wall in that dark corner of leshy for the rest of my life but no. there's a void

If you're interested in being a youtuber (go for it 100%) you should consider the watchability of your vids. No sound makes it harder to watch, with the lack of camera smoothness adding on to that. I'm definitely being patronizing and meta I'm aware but that's what I think
I don't blame the developers for doing that with Leshy. It would be more tedious to work and consume more resources. They chose to optimize the game, and that is appreciated. But Leshy is scary.
My daniel bro was too lazy to make the animation for that so he just did that. Even after that its still a great game, daniel deserved to skip some hard parts.
