Nicholson is 1 of my fav places. been there few times. I would like to go in the tunnels sometime when it hasn't rains in a while. I was there to the south portal few yrs ago. That's the old Scranton to Binghamton main line. Dlw ran from Jersey city/Hoboken to Buffalo. Binghamton to Syracuse, Bloomsburg to Wilkes-Barre area. That's the Nicholson tunnel u found. I found it once. The rd next to the line with the river is old lv not far from dlw
Awesome video. I was literally there last week. Used to go across that viaduct on the steam train out of Scranton in the early 2000's. The railroad you were following along the Susquehanna is Reading & Northern of course. Line runs up to the Norfolk Southern at Mehoopany. I just posted some videos of the train running up there last week. You passed right by the Vosburg tunnel on that line. Go to the Carney Cemetery behind Proctor & Gamble in Mehoopany. You can drive the railroad right in to the North portal. South portal also accessible by rail. Train usually comes up through that one from Pittston at about 9:45am and back down around noon.
I never knew there was an older tunnel in that area, a number of years ago I went with some of my friends to the south end of the present rail line, had to get off the beaten path and walk a ways but we did find it and went inside a ways before the girls got scared, there used to be a switching building not too far out of the tunnel, two story structure made of concrete but I don't see it in this video, looking south, it would have been on the right side maybe 300 feet out just off the tracks, we could only get in the first floor, there was a path around the back that led up to the second floor but the walkway across had been taken down, the path continues up the hill towards an open field
Wish i could send a message on here but this will have to do lol. Do you know what the big concrete opening on the north bound side of 81 near hazleton is? Between mile marker 146.8-146.9. I see it all the time driving by. Just gos into the side of the mountain. Dont know if you ever checked it out or not.
@@coalcrackerchris yes just past west hazleton exit 145 northbound. When you start goin down the hill keep an eye out to your right you cant miss it. Probably easier to see now before the weeds start growing again
A good exploration, what made it better is that I don't know of anyone who did similar. I really enjoyed it. It appears Amtrak is very interested in a passenger line from Scranton to NYC and will probably come to fruition. Would you be interested in taking the train at least once? I would. Keep up the good work.
Good video. Love the outtake pics! Thank you for taking the time to include part of the construction process of the Tunkhannock Viaduct.
What a picture perfect shot @24:24 fit for framing 👍 .... Super cool old photos of the bridge build. Thanks Chris
13:29 north side of Conrail modern tunnel toward the Nicholson viaduct !!!
