  • Some have described Centurion Running's South Downs Way 100 event as the "crown jewel" in their series, and I can definitely see where they're coming from! This video chronicles a (mostly) enjoyable day on lovely trails with favourable weather and fantastic people - and my 4th 100 mile ultramarathon finish.

    Congratulations James! An epic run - you captured the scenery so well. Your technique after one hundred miles was still sharp, that’s incredible 👏

      Thanks! There were plenty of cyclists out while I was running - looks like fun, although pushing up the hills and dismounting for all the gates, less so 😆

      @@runjamesrun totally agree on the gates (although not as bad as the trans cambrian way!). I managed to cycle up every hill but one, despite carrying camping gear. But they were hard work! Trans Cambrian is a great, really remote and wild, trail worth checking out by the way

    just subbed great video well done on the 100 miler . Iv'e just raced my first 50k and am thinking of doing the south downs way 100 . This might sound a bit unrealistic but I would like to beat the sun going down how many hours would that give me?

    • @runjamesrun
      @runjamesrun  Год назад +1

      Thanks! Race starts at 5am and sun sets about 9:45pm so you’d need to make it round in under 17 hours to finish in daylight. This year that would have meant 7th place overall, or female winner position. If that’s achievable then by all means go for it, but my advice would be not to worry about the nighttime stuff - like the other elements of an ultra it takes some getting used to but improves with practice and in my opinion adds to the sense of adventure in a race like this! I know it looked a bit bleak in this video but nobody and nothing is looking good in the last 10 miles of a 100 ;-) Definitely give this race a go, it was a tremendous experience, and let me know how you get on!

  • @ChrisBranch

    Great video, thank you! I’ve just signed up for next year and … I’m terrified! The thought of 100-miles is killing me 🤦‍♂️😂
    When you said you started the race aiming at a certain intensity, what heart rate were you aiming at, and do you think it was the right level? Thanks 😊🙏

    • @runjamesrun
      @runjamesrun  Год назад +1

      Congrats on committing to the race - I'm sure you won't regret it, even if you have a healthy amount of apprehension right now 😉. For most ultras, and certainly for a 100 miler, you want to spend almost the entirety of the race in your Z1/Z2 range. It is OK to let it tick up briefly but if you find yourself regularly in your tempo zone then you'll likely accumulate a lactate debt that will seriously hamper your chances of success. The key to these things is not to run fast but to manage your nutrition and effort levels so that you can keep moving forward for a really long time, and it took me a lot of practice to get comfortable running as "slow" as that requires. It likely means walking up most hills, which feels counterintuitive at first, but you more than make up for it by simply not needing to stop and rest because you've overcooked it. Best of luck to you - I look forward to hearing how it goes!

      @@runjamesrun perfect, thanks. I definitely made the mistake of going out too hard in my last ultra; I'm going to try and get it right next time!
