What a tragic game. Overlooked by many. The few that played it hated it or gave up due to it's unforgiving design. The weird and unique artwork and somewhat haunting music is what kept me coming back. And thankfully to the net I was able to beat the game. So much potential . . .
I think the game does a masterful work combining aesthetics, mood and tone with the music and overall art style. Unfortunetly, it's proof that games that lack good game design are doomed to fail. Which is a pity, because it nailed pretty much everything else.
To be fair, the hit detection was pretty bad. But I loved it for the graphics and soundtrack and I was scared shitless as a young boy when I heard the opening theme and then the picture appeared.
Listening to this and I was transported back to my old family home lounge room in Adamstown Newcastle NSW Australia, Mega Drive, midweek afternoon winter, sun setting around 5pm, 68cm Rank Arena CRT, little Sharp stereo speaker system hooked up to my SNES and Mega Drive via RCA cables, Mega Drive via the head phone out preamp power, man oh man, I'm there, tears now in my eyes, the power of sound dude, the power of sound.
I have such a soft spot for this game. I remember walking into my local indie game shop and seeing the original running on an A500 and being utterly astonished. Sadly I never had an Amiga to play it on but I did have an Atari Lynx 2 which I owned a copy for. Beautiful game visually and aurally.
Haha, good luck with that... I know it's a pretty crazy game! Funny, KimbleJustice did a review, inspired me to remaster the song, and now you're inspired to do a Let's Play. It's all just, so... inspiring!
It transcends the game for sure, as I've only played it briefly once or twice, but fell in love with this tune immediately. I'm still ashamed I missed two drums at the beginning and now all these people are gonna hear it wrong... I'm ruining history! 😂🤣
OMFG DUDE! This song was always on my list of remakes/remasters! I saved the video to check out later the info on the original sounds and all the tools, etc. You just got an enormous amount of respect besides the Like button. \m/ I'ma start the remake later, inspiration alert! :D
Sick ass graphics with bass analogy and rhythm with beats especially when they change songs on certain spots. Only other game to do that was Strider from Sega Genesis.
Thanks!! I'll have to take a look! These games don't really hold any special place for me, but the first time I heard this particular theme, I just fell in love with it, and since it's already in tracker format, it was really easy to just add some subtle effects and render it out at ultra-high quality. You should check out the augmented mix I did! I basically used this as a jumping off point for my own interpretation.
@@DC-iy6hl Nice! Just looked up a vid... nice chiptune rendition it had there! You should check out the augmented mix on my channel... same thing but with a bit more artistic license while staying true to the original.
Sadly no, I don't hold any special nostalgia for this game, just LOVE this particular tune! But it does have a lot of other good tune that could use some love!
Richard Craig i know you probably can’t for legal reasons but I would literally pay for a full remastered soundtrack of this game,it’s always been one of my favorites ever
+Golvellius Thanks! You should check out the "augmented mix" on my channel as well! Same song, but with all of my own artistic interpretation thrown in!
@@RichardCraig(Shadow of the) Beast was one "son of a beast" ;) among the games in terms of the difficulty imho. I remember how I hated this game! I was killed hundred times, the most by the monster under the well, when the exit was just around the corner. And of course it took me some time to figure out to first go left. ;-) But, to hell with the difficulty! What a great music composed by David Whittaker for this game! And the legendary parallax "pseudo 3D" effect.
Amazing music and amazing graphics for a mediocre game. LOL. I mean, I used to play that game for hours and then just watch the intro scene for hours more.
Weird, cuz I used the original .mod conversion, but that was a conversion from the original Amiga game, so maybe they missed a drum in there all those years ago.
Claudio Teixeira Hehe, glad you like it, though calling it a remix is giving me way too much credit, haha... I just fixed a few things caused by the limitation of the original song's 4 channels and then threw some EQing and reverb onto it... basically a fresh coat of paint. I do happen to be working on a new version that's a bit more rchrdcrg-y, though, haha!
+Matteo berretti I don't have the original MOD files any more, and I'm having trouble finding them online. If someone can find them and get me a link, I'll definitely look into doing more!
+DoubleDragonNinja I'm sure I'll be hated for this, but I've never enjoyed the gameplay of Eric Chahi's games... Amazing style, but the substance is made out of pure frustration. I'll have to find a LP of it somewhere, though!
Nope, taken directly from a .MOD of the original music and then went from there! I use OpenMPT which supports these formats, so I can work with the original files as a source.
Nah, this is literally the original music rendered out at a higher quality than the Amiga was capable of, plus some tiny edits by myself. For a proper remix, there's the Augmented Mix on my channel! :)
@@RichardCraig Sorry but it is obvious here it is 44 kHz it makes a big difference with the atrocious low frequency output of the Amiga, with its distorted metallic sound.
@@Archimedes75009 Oh I'm not saying it isn't a big difference, just that all I did was add some light effects and then render it out at 192/24 and then downsample to 44/16... I shouldn't get too much credit for such little work, lol! It's definitely an improvement over the Amiga's output at 22/8, though to be fair many sound designers took that into consideration when selecting their samples, so some old Amiga songs sound garish and tinny at higher qualities.
Love how this track managed to mix dark melancholy with something still kinetic enough to fit a video game. Brilliant.

This was the game that made me deside I wanted a Korg M1 to have all the instruments presets used. And I still have it.
The original one , with better sounds quality , you are worthy of a 90's Amiga Protracker composer , thank you from France ;)
Feck me... Was swaying and nodding, then got some dust into my eyes.
Amazing piece of music. Cheers for that!
Great work! This theme really deserved this!

ahh Indie game shops, they were the days, if it werent for indie game shop bargain bins i wouldnt have played half the games i did back in the 90's.
it was my best amiga game, all glory to beast!
Just wanted to say that I love this... really brings back memories!
+Daniel Weimann Thanks! Glad you enjoyed! If you happen to give the new Augmented Mix a listen, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
That song is an underliked classic, kudos!
best video game music ever. THX
Agree...
Check out Hired Guns (Amiga) soundtrack too.
That was pretty badass
There is no better Soundtrack for a game out there! Imagine that this, along with the entire game, fit on 2 floppies 😳

I cant believe this just got announced for Master system next year, 1989's gonna be a good year for gaming!.
This track is legit
Very good this version of "Welcome"
Thanks! You should hear my augmented mix!
best game music for me :) Unforgetable melody:)

so good
Excellent work! SOTB was one of Psygnosis' masterpieces.
I like the fact the PS4 remake lets you play the game with the original game's soundtrack when you unlock it.
Wonderful! Amazing!

David Whittaker would be proud. Plan on redoing the whole soundtrack? Also, Beast 2 and 3 could benefit from this treatment.

Great remake well done. On regarding the theme itself I prefer C64 sid Chip version to the Amiga version

good job....

Dug it. I always thought it was creepy as fuck. DOOD! Love it! You've inspired me to do a lets play of this!
You just got yerself anotha sub
great tune - sort of pairs with Sentinel Returns - main theme (J Carpenter) - would try this mix

I'm a little guilty of that myself, only played once or twice and never figured out the whole "go left at the beginning" thing, lol!

True, it does have a similar style - and that is a compliment considering the superb music in that game
This was abit before Donk's outing to the country.
