- Ed Whitlock is a once-in-a-generation athlete. He won't get the same coverage as a LeBron James, but he's been competitively running marathons at a high level for over 60 years. What exactly is the secret to shattering records for every age bracket out there? According to Ed, it's running laps through a cemetery.

Running in a cemetery and being 85. Kinda deep
Death is always with us, everday, death is not the enemy. Aging is, deterioration is, that's why I respect this man for taking care of himself untill his death.
He sadly passed away due to prostate cancer at age 86. May his soul RIP.
Andy Tan tbats a shame wasnt for .that maybe could had lived another 10 years
Just don't understand how someone can be that active and healthy and die of cancer.... Just not right.
Cody g you need to learn about cancer, I beat prostate cancer twice in the last 6 years. Been running most of my life. No symptoms just happened with yearly check ups. Caught it early. Only took 8 moths off after surgery. I am 57 years old, because I got yearly check ups.
b.s..He's probably still running around some private island. I'm tired of the sickness propaganda you liars spread. How convenient your comment is at the top. So fake and lame.
@@markcooperartcom You know what mindrapeart, I agree with you TOTALLY!! There is NO WAY in the world that I believe that this man is dead. You know what mindrapeart, some people just want to spread rumors because they are jealous because they can't run. And this runner looks VERY good for his age. I feel like this guy is very healthy spirtiurally, physcally, and mentally. Oh, by the way mindrapeart, I want to wsh you a very happy and prosperous 2019 new year!
Running in the cemetery is a good motivator
Very sadly, Ed died of prostate cancer on March 13, 2017, just two months after this was posted and only about 5 months after running sub 4:00 hour marathon.
rip.
This is the main man rip
Less than 4 hours...that is competitive!!!
Sad to know that, i hope he didn´t suffer much, his awesome example will persevere. It´s disturbing how he looked and acted extremely healthy in this video yet cancer was already in the lethal stage, what an horrible disease in all of it´s types.
My dad is 89 yrs old still goes to Seniors fitness center. Walks 30 minutes after breakfast everyday. He eats organic food for decade and 100 healthy food. He never miss a day at the gym. After the gym he reads books after reading books he watches MAD MONEY with Mr . Cramer. That’s been his routine for decades
Amazing - I hope I'm like that when I'm that age.
However I do find it somewhat sad when he says he doesn't particularly enjoy the training/running itself. I think running isn't easy to like, but I strongly believe there is a deep joy that can be discovered. It's not instant gratification or joy like some other activities, but... I don't know, I just feel there's a smooth joy hidden in there somewhere, and finding it and learning how to appreciate it in the moment is really... peaceful. I don't know how to describe...
Anyways congrats - a model.
I enjoy so many things about it.
The running itself, the benefits, how it fixed my knees,
The breathing,
The way it smells after rain, the views, the city, the trails or country you can only see this way while running, the euphoria, the calm, relaxation it brings. Running through muddy trails at speed. Even how my body warms up when running winter days at -20 Celsius. I don’t even have to wear gloves or a toque.
He hit the nail on the head, he trains slowly so he can run the next day. He doesn’t count the laps, he doesn’t keep track of the time. He is a real runner
So "real runners" dont use GPS or HR monitors?
but 9:00/9:30 pace for training just doesn't seem slow to me, especially for a man in his 80's. Just remarkable!
A very humble man. A true inspiration to all of us.
This guy inspires me to do long distance running when I'm old too ... currently a sprinter
Whenever I get overwhelmed by competition or anxiety, I like to watch Ed run in this video for a moment of objectiveness. It reminds me that it isn't necessarily about running fast. It's about keeping on running.
his form/strength at that age is so impressive. great stuff.
Yes, I agree with you adarqui, I was noticing his running form as well, that guy has GREAT running form!a Oh, by the way, I want to wish you a very happy and prosprous 2019 new year! :-)
So come on, there has to be a drug here.
@@therespectedlex9794 Or maybe he has just been taking care of himself his entire life and didn't destroy his body with bullshit habits like you? Not everyone who is better than you is on "drugs", typical excuse from manlets when they see anyone who has achieved more than them physically, "HE IS ON STEROIDS REEEEEEEEE", if you don't want to change yourself then don't, it's your life and you should have full freedom to destroy yourself however you want, but the moment you try to bring other people down to your level because you get lonely at the bottom, you are a problem.
@@Kaledrone Bull shit habits like me. All too often in life there's always been some invidious bully like you. Someone who pretends to be positive or insulted when they're the negative and insulting. You don't know anything about my personal habits. I make a satirical joke and there has always been someone like you, incapable of bonding with other men this way, who has to lash out and put down. It's a tongue in cheek banter like one liner, so live with it. There could well be drug use here as well
People like him are very strong to do that. he has a very healthy body because most 85 year olds can barely do anything. But he run a marathon faster than 30 year olds.
Salute to you sir, bcoz you were running at the age of 85.
Yup, got more motivation to keep running.
I could watch this for hours.
His running style at 85 was better than a lot of runners in their 30’s
hopefully that's me at 85. I'm already a running introvert, just gotta make it another 62 years haha
Keith Jennings no rush
Running introvert ahahaha that sounds so funny.
There is a guy in his 80's in my city who has finished 100 marathons.
Impressive. Rest well, sir.
Rest easy, Sir. And thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you so much for sharing your story
He said that there aren't many 80 year olds who are running. There aren't many 80 year olds around PERIOD!
LOL
Jenny Titus Im laughing at your name, I'm still a kid at heart,( because I am)
I mean if you live to 65 you should live to be 80
There are more 80 yo than before.
Maybe not 90
thank you for the motivation
Excellent job my friend 👍
Congratulations for video, I was walking mixed by slow jogging 80 km per day for 60 days(Athens 15th international ultra marathon festival 2020 in age 64) I did 4750 kilometers! In total time 60 days, What do u think? Is that good?.😊😊.
Now I have a goal.
This story is so motivational!!
Omg!!! This is amazing 👍❤
I am very happy your story is around. Thanks for sharing it. P.S. I am a C survivor.
awesome.I think I should run every day to keep my health.
Who the fuck would downvote this?!
Are you guys gonna do another series about New York street football like you did last year?
His physique for his age is insane
This is awesome, we have a running group that invloves all ages in the bronx... its in my vlog
What this man is doing in his 80s is what prevents him from rotting in a nursing home. I am 61, so there is still hope. After watching this video, I don't feel as depressed about my age. After that long COVID break, I have to start using my gym membership again.
Yes very nice example of life congarulations from Mexico.
Great man
Awesome!
Ran on the same race as he did in the Toronto Scotiabank marathon when he was still alive.....blew right pass me. And I'm 50 years younger!
Nobody gonna mention why this old man is running through a cemetery through this whole video?
This is a psyop to condition people to be sick.
He was running through the cemetery because he was buried in training.
So cool! 👍😄
What a legend
Marathon man was here.
I like his honesty. He doesnt dislike running but he doesn't enjoy it either. And he's never had that 'runners high' bulshit that people talk of. RIP old boy.
in some clips it seems like this dude runs faster than me. i seriously need to lose some weight..... and all that damn belly fat :(. hashtaggoalsforthenewyear
why say hash tag instead of #? lol
bhallic24 you probably haven't even ran at all
It does make a giant difference, and is one of the reasons he was able to run as long as he did as he weighed only 112. Start doing so light high rep plyos and build some good shock absorbancy to go along with the weight loss, biggest keys to being able to run your whole life without as much worry of knee problems.
A great role model...seems sort of brittle...stiff...running through the graveyard....very profound.
we are all running to the cemetery, our doorway to the ultimate destinies.
What shoe he wore?
I wish he's my grandpa.
13lunt420Media appreciate what you have..
He had more practice
Legend
this guy is rlly cool
So that will be me in 15 years? . . . ouch, it does not look good. I'll give up running long before that and just keep hiking if I can.
He looks like bishop from the Alien series
Cool shoes
Do a documentary on Steve Dalkowski please.
Running in a cemetery is a bit on the nose don't you think
RIP Ed.
In this Ed Whitlock is running through the Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria on Vancouver Island.
TED Johnson shared this video with me.
Interesting fella
MILTON ONTARIO BABY REPRESENT
What the deuce they keep on showing graves during his speech?
Anyone know how good he was at running when he was young?? Sub 4 marathon at age 85 probably would be under 2:30hrs in his 20s!!
kirkleach
He’s very fast for his age!
@kirkleach That 2:31 was his first marathon. For a 48-year-old, that's a damn fast debut. And Ed was a very fast middle-distance runner, both as a young man and as a masters athlete. He was no doubt genetically suited for running.
He was Olympic caliber in England until injured around 20. Basically started masters running in Canada. He ran incredible times from his late 40s through his 70s. In all distances. His 2:54 marathon time at age 72 is age graded as a 2:05. Unreal!
@@1xsnrg
Thanks for the info
7 hour Marathon.
*less then 4hours
LET ME ASK YOU A QUESTION: Who owns ALL the World Records & ALL Championships in ALL Individual Track & Fields Departments?
Oh.. Run you Great...
Thanks...
💯💯
That posture will only hurt him later on.
"later on". He's 85.
Nakiami Well this guy doesn't look like he's dying any time soon.
El Blanco how many 85 year olds do you know that has a better posture?
Look, and then laugh, at all the smart people replying here.
you guys can't find another place to shoot this ...
A few good quotes but this was missing a good story, Vice! Step up the content quality.
Ben Beacham he's 85 years old and does the marathon in sub 4 hours. That's a great story in itself, period.
Alvar Wæhle True
Hi with respect to you what do you put in your coffee.Respect to you Sir
No fauja singh
proof he even finished the race?
googling his name comes up with a lot of articles about him and his achievements
He died last March sir so in many ways he did “finish the race”
Maybe ok for him now.. but running on those paths may affect.his legs when he gets older
Underrated comment.
KeepYouRight well he sadly died a hear ago so i guess he wont have that issue :(
Sadly he has passed away but at the time of the video he already was "older" were you thinking when he reached 100 his legs might have problems?
Thehuman H that’s the joke, that people always say running will affect you when you’re older but this guy already is and he’s fine.
@@keepyupy2334 oops missed the sarcasm. lot of dumb folks on RUclips thought you were one of them turns out I am.
We can't all be born genetically good :p That is a large part of it.
Djuntas I think everyone is capable of running a sub 4 hour marathon :D
I bet I could beat him in a race!!
No runner's high ever? Maybe he shouldn't train in the cemetery. Could be a downer.
ok.... it's a little ON THE NOSE to have the man running through a fucking cemetery. that said? good show!
We are all running to that same place anyway.
i'm 25, he would ruin me in a last than a km oO'
Heel toe!
Hi
Does he really have a patch that consists of herbs which are used to detoxify the body?
K
first
There's always the exception which the media hypes for some reason. We each age at different rates and to offer up some "freak" (no offense) as a comparison to our own, more modest achievements, is not only unfair, but useless and irrelevant.
Rip.He is a motivator for me!💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻i do calisthenics and the reason i run is because i saw this vid 2 years ago!
