They did this because they didn't think anyone would notice since this is a very niche game that isn't going to sell many copies and a lot of LRG's products end up in the hands of scalpers and shelf collectors who will never open it. They are correcting the issue because they got caught doing something underhanded, not because of some oversight or unforeseen defect. Is it better than nothing? Yes. Is it in any way worthy of praise given this circumstance? No. I mean they probably produced less than a 1000 of these and I bet they didn't even have a distributor for it. They probably just had some dude in the office with a CD burner bang these out then sent them to a local printer for the artwork on top the discs.
I've been calling them Limited Scam for years. I also know a thing or two about CD-Rs since I burn tons for Dreamcast. They Cheaped out. CMC Pros and Ritek are what I use as they don't have cheap dyes. TDK does. Guess what Limited Scam used? TDK discs Ding ding ding
A 600 pack of Riteks the ones I use are a little under $150 on Amazon. 2 Orders would make that money back. Of course they could also not cheap out and just press the discs
This release reminded me of the half ass Metalocalypse Complete Season that wasn't even in Blu Ray format, was $90 and the first run of it didn't even have the hour special that basically everybody wanted it for. Then the kicker was that they preorders ship out anyway then delisted the product from stores to fix the bad batches and someone not even part of the distribution company informed customers that they can receive a replacement disc. Wasn't advertised anywhere so a lot of people got screwed over.
I think you've miss-understood the meaning of the name Limited Run. It refers to the the much more limited life-span of CD-Rs. You only have a limited amount of time to use the discs. It's basically high concept art that goes over most peoples heads.
I am, unfortunately, one of those people who actually bought this game. I can confirm that all the discs are burned CD-R's. What a damn joke, even companies who make unlicensed games for other consoles like PCE Works for the PC Engine make pressed copies that have high quality discs and packaging. This has been so disappointing. I did send a ticket requesting a return to Limited Run, but I highly doubt they'll even do anything about it.

They claim they had issues with traditional reproduction, because supposedly different 3do consoles were struggling with the results. So, for compatibility sake, they went with CDRs, only to find out that didn't work either (I mean, obviously?). IDK. It sure does feel cheap, even though they claim it wasn't done as a cost-reduction measure. There's an article on time extension for anyone interested.
They are a corporately owned company as of 2022 (Embracer group). It's cost cutting 100%. It's not even really a question, line must go up. Article is just PR fluff to cover for cost cutting.
Embracer are a bunch of non-gaming idiots who think all they have to do to make money is to throw around some capital. They're scum, and barely more intelligent than your average wet sock.
I'm a longtime viewer that usually enjoys your arcade game overviews, but I'm really happy to see you speak out about this issue. The last time I bought from LRG was for River City Girls and VA-11 Hall-A. I already knew they were pretty scummy pushing artificial scarcity and forcing people to set reminders for a certain date when pre-orders would open and promptly sell out within 10 minutes. But even worse is they're still running the practice of keeping your money hostage for an entire year before even receiving the product. It's not surprising that they would try to cut corners despite the community taking notice of their recent releases in the last few years being of particularly lower quality. Thanks to your video though, the issue is blowing up on twitter and hopefully other social media platforms and they won't get away with this. Big respect to you for putting your reputation on the line and doing what's right. I hope this is enough to deter consumers from supporting LRG again, and I hope LRG at least makes good on this and sends out replacements/offers refunds. What a shame those who carried Kenji Eno's legacy trusted this company and LRG couldn't even get it right with over a years worth of time to prepare and ensure everything was up to the high standards they proudly claim they have.
The moment the founders sold off the company to Embracer and quit (not saying much because the COO especially was a weirdo), this was going to be a sinking ship. Limited Run is going to go away before long because it's probably in Embracer's best interest (and platform holders) to have their purchases be digital versus physical sadly.
So sad, bro! Kenji Eno's up there with Fumito Ueda as one of my favorite people in games period! Ueda even got his start under Eno's wing, working on Enemy Zero as a WARP member! Pressed / replicated is a wholly diff process of producing optical media. It gets complicated but pressed is made from a glass master and plastics are then laid up and melted and “pressed” per disc. Higher quality / diff process / better reflective quality and longevity Duplicated / burnt is a dye layer that is burnt like your standard CD-R

Thank you for making a video. When the allegations came out, I was disappointed to find out there was no picture or video proof because I know people like to attack the company these days. This is pretty frustrating to see. I've had issues with them in the past but they were minor and they were able to help me. What a shame.
The crazy thing about companies like this thinking they can get away with obvious cost-cutting measures is that the niche that splash out money for these physical releases are in general going to be more likely to notice. This isn’t some mass market PS5 game, but a re-release of a game for a console that was niche on release.
Does the soundtrack CD have the bonus track hidden like on the original mini CD (track 99) or is it just the 3 songs that are listed on the disc? As a huge fan of this game (& all of Kenji Eno's games) I do feel like I need to get this even if it won't run on my 3DO. But I am disappointed that the game discs are burned & not professionally pressed. Hopefully Fumito Ueda gets credit this time for his contribution to the Director's Cut. But somehow I doubt it. I hear 2 music tracks from "D2" in the background. Nice touch. :)

I don't remember the title of the E.P. but I believe it has a big D2 on the cover. As far as I know it has 3 to 5 tracks one of which is called "Snowbird" (possibly the Snowbird Mix of "Mexican Flyer" from Space Channel 5?). I don't own this but I'd sure like to have it. They know a majority of their buyers are resellers and collectors, who only buy their limited releases to flip on eBay or to remain sealed and displayed on a shelf.

I can’t help but comment that the Sony CD-R you show at 6:13 time stamp is one of the best quality CD-Rs imo for backing up 32-bit consoles, especially the Saturn 🤓 It’s been slightly better than the re-branded Taiyo Yuden for me when testing multiple burners and IMGburn at 4x. PX-716A = pairs well with it but also newer burners too ( pioneer XD05S/B ) Ok back to the topic.. 😁 thanks for sharing these details and showing the lack of a true press here! LRG should never cut corners like this
I was so chuffed, when I boughtthe 3DO D the director's cut from Japan. Yes I got it from eBay, but I don't care, I got everything with it proudly displaying with all my other 3do games. But thank you guys for tell me the limited run not a very good company to buy anything off. I will stick to buy off eBay or yahoo Japan 👍

For something expensive and well, limited run. This is completely unacceptable. Limitedrungames needs a fire put to their feet and let them know this isn't right. Limited Run Games has been going downhill in quality ever since they switched to the preorder model. They also talk about how they are "a few months behind production due to COVID" but somehow over 4 years can't get it together and continue to release weekly preorders. I bought from them several times in the past, but gave up after it took about 8 months from the time the preorder campaign ending to finally ship. Not to mention the whole fiasco with the Star Wars KOTOR vibroblade. They're cheaping out on many things and still collecting the same amount of money as before. Not worth it. Super Rare Games or Strictly Limited would be two companies to actually support.
Damn, that's like buying a physical SNES or MD re-release and only getting a floppy disk with the emulator rom on it. Plus you waited ONE YEAR for a Limited Run game to be delivered. I didn't know they started offering 'express delivery.' They are scum.
I feel the same way about this sort of thing. They will probably do the same with the Genesis re-releases of Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel & Aero the Acrobat 2.. Instead of using traditional PCB boards in the carts, they will probably use cheap flash carts.
That's really crummy but I must say, I'm a bit moved by how passionate you are about this game. I remember my brother renting it for PlayStation way back then and I was fascinated by it. I always wanted to give it a try myself. As a true fan of this title, you should absolutely take them to task.
Their international shipping costs have increased, and are way too expensive now. I checked the price of the Rugrats NES cart, and it was around 100€ with the cheapest shipping option. Did not order it... This situation, censorship of certain games and the shady firing of an employee over brain dead reasons are really making me reconsider ordering many of their titles. I kinda wanted that Rondo of Blood rerelease, but I'm not wasting nearly 100€ on a PC-Engine cd-r. I also want to be excited for the Gex collection, but they'll probably censor it, without mentioning it on the listing. I used to order from them monthly back in the day...
I don’t buy repros, like ever. If I were to do this, I’d buy a pack of CD-Rs and burn a game onto them. Hey, that’s what I’ve been doing on the Saturn and Dreamcast. I too use CD-Rs to burn awesome OSTs onto which consist of anime openings/closings, the music I grew up with (that being 2000s punk like Sum 41 and Fall Out Boy which I’m a huge fan of and is my favourite era of music btw) and video game tracks. I’ve been doing that since I was a kid. And I also remember getting a DVD-R for my birthday back when I was like 7 from my sister and it contained episodes of SpongeBob on it. No idea what to do with the stack of DVD-Rs in my house because I remember time and time again, I would get a failed end result, most likely because I did something wrong.

This past year limited run has been really trying to remain relevant. Last year and two years ago they had a bunch of games I’d buy but now they’re kinda dry, this is just the cherry on top

Is there not cdr media that mimics the same color as a legit pressed disc? I'm surprised that is not a thing. I'm not a collector, so what concerns me more is the lifespan of those copied discs. Maybe I'm wrong but aren't the light green/yellow colored cdrs the worst you can use when it comes to readibility and lifespan? I gather there is no copy protection on the 3do?

The voice over is done to the edit. So sometimes I say what I’m pointing at. Other times I say something different. There is no script so I kind of just “do it”
I’ve followed LRG ever since 2018 when they did limited collectors editions of the Jak and Daxter series (my favourite game series of all time) and every single run I’ve seen them do since then has been disaster after disaster. If it isn’t because of the in some cases > 2 years shipping times on their releases, it’s some other bs like this. How this company hasn’t gone under yet is astonishing. They make DKoldies look like a decent company.

@@VideoGameEsotericaI haven't come across any discussions regarding the issues that the PC version of the game 'D' by Limited Run Games is facing. It's possible that the game disc works well on older computers, but I'm not entirely sure. However, it's unfortunate that the company failed to realize the problems with the 3DO release, considering that you can burn your own ROM disc to play on its original hardware. It would be better if they partnered with different companies to manufacture official discs instead of scamming their customers. Given their track record, this wouldn't surprise me at all. But in all seriousness, this is bad.
One telltale sign you have a game on a CD-R, no Compact Disc wordmark on the artwork. All games on CD had the basic wordmark. Those CD-R's would either have to have the recordable wordmark (which they won't because that would have consumers refuse to buy them) or not have a wordmark on at all. If they added a basic wordmark like the original 3DO game CD has on those CD-R's, they would be violating the standard, committing trademark violation and duping consumers, leading to action from the FTC or trading standards or even legal action.
Edit: Is there any recourse for this particular release? As someone who does open and play the games purchased from LRG, if this was my experience; and LRG did not explicitly state it would be on burned CD-Rs; I would be wanting a refund, even if it was opened. Pressed discs simply work better on the aging hardware for consoles like the 3DO/PC Engine CD/Dreamcast etc. I guess if you want to ensure you're getting a pressed disc, you have to limit yourself to games on newer consoles that couldn't play burned discs. This is still garbage though. I've bought 4-5 titles off LRG, some SNES and PS5 games. I will definitely keep this in mind going forward.
I am honestly curious what manufacturer of CD-r's Limited Run Games went with, because the quality burn media varies considerably depending who actually made it. Somehow I wish they went with the expensive stuff, but I doubt they did.

I don’t buy that at all. 3DO is a standard disc with Opera file system sized sectors. Nothing unique about them at all

Limited Run is going to go away before long because it's probably in Embracer's best interest (and platform holders) to have their purchases be digital versus physical sadly.

Stupid question but what is the difference between a burned and a pressed disc? I somehow have never heard of the term pressed disc.
Pressed / replicated is a wholly diff process of producing optical media. It gets complicated but pressed is made from a glass master and plastics are then laid up and melted and “pressed” per disc. Higher quality / diff process / better reflective quality and longevity
Duplicated / burnt is a dye layer that is burnt like your standard CD-R

The crazy thing about companies like this thinking they can get away with obvious cost-cutting measures is that the niche that splash out money for these physical releases are in general going to be more likely to notice. This isn’t some mass market PS5 game, but a re-release of a game for a console that was niche on release.

Does the soundtrack CD have the bonus track hidden like on the original mini CD (track 99) or is it just the 3 songs that are listed on the disc? As a huge fan of this game (& all of Kenji Eno's games) I do feel like I need to get this even if it won't run on my 3DO. But I am disappointed that the game discs are burned & not professionally pressed. Hopefully Fumito Ueda gets credit this time for his contribution to the Director's Cut. But somehow I doubt it. I hear 2 music tracks from "D2" in the background. Nice touch. :)

I don't remember the title of the E.P. but I believe it has a big D2 on the cover. As far as I know it has 3 to 5 tracks one of which is called "Snowbird" (possibly the Snowbird Mix of "Mexican Flyer" from Space Channel 5?). I don't own this but I'd sure like to have it. I can’t help but comment that the Sony CD-R you show at 6:13 time stamp is one of the best quality CD-Rs imo for backing up 32-bit consoles, especially the Saturn 🤓 It’s been slightly better than the re-branded Taiyo Yuden for me when testing multiple burners and IMGburn at 4x. PX-716A = pairs well with it but also newer burners too ( pioneer XD05S/B )

Limited Run Games has been going downhill in quality ever since they switched to the preorder model. They also talk about how they are "a few months behind production due to COVID" but somehow over 4 years can't get it together and continue to release weekly preorders. I bought from them several times in the past, but gave up after it took about 8 months from the time the preorder campaign ending to finally ship. Not to mention the whole fiasco with the Star Wars KOTOR vibroblade. They're cheaping out on many things and still collecting the same amount of money as before.
Not worth it. Super Rare Games or Strictly Limited would be two companies to actually support.

I feel the same way about this sort of thing. They will probably do the same with the Genesis re-releases of Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel & Aero the Acrobat 2.. Instead of using traditional PCB boards in the carts, they will probably use cheap flash carts.

That's really crummy but I must say, I'm a bit moved by how passionate you are about this game. I remember my brother renting it for PlayStation way back then and I was fascinated by it. I always wanted to give it a try myself. As a true fan of this title, you should absolutely take them to task.

Their international shipping costs have increased, and are way too expensive now. I checked the price of the Rugrats NES cart, and it was around 100€ with the cheapest shipping option. Did not order it... This situation, censorship of certain games and the shady firing of an employee over brain dead reasons are really making me reconsider ordering many of their titles. I kinda wanted that Rondo of Blood rerelease, but I'm not wasting nearly 100€ on a PC-Engine cd-r. I also want to be excited for the Gex collection, but they'll probably censor it, without mentioning it on the listing.

I don’t buy repros, like ever. If I were to do this, I’d buy a pack of CD-Rs and burn a game onto them. Hey, that’s what I’ve been doing on the Saturn and Dreamcast. I too use CD-Rs to burn awesome OSTs onto which consist of anime openings/closings, the music I grew up with (that being 2000s punk like Sum 41 and Fall Out Boy which I’m a huge fan of and is my favourite era of music btw) and video game tracks. I’ve been doing that since I was a kid. And I also remember getting a DVD-R for my birthday back when I was like 7 from my sister and it contained episodes of SpongeBob on it. No idea what to do with the stack of DVD-Rs in my house because I remember time and time again, I would get a failed end result, most likely because I did something wrong.

Is there not cdr media that mimics the same color as a legit pressed disc? I'm surprised that is not a thing. I'm not a collector, so what concerns me more is the lifespan of those copied discs. Maybe I'm wrong but aren't the light green/yellow colored cdrs the worst you can use when it comes to readibility and lifespan? I gather there is no copy protection on the 3do?

Im worried i just got in a pc vr, and switch games in from them. I was going to wait untill i got new cables for my head set. I guess I'm opening it tomorrow. I hadn't planned on opening the switch games at this point. Since i got tired of waiting after a year and got digital copies.

Mr Bacon, do you talk when you record your videos only to do a separate voice over later? I'm asking because I've been following you for a long time and you often seem to point at things at random without saying anything about them.
The voice over is done to the edit. So sometimes I say what I’m pointing at. Other times I say something different. There is no script so I kind of just “do it”
I’ve followed LRG ever since 2018 when they did limited collectors editions of the Jak and Daxter series (my favourite game series of all time) and every single run I’ve seen them do since then has been disaster after disaster. If it isn’t because of the in some cases > 2 years shipping times on their releases, it’s some other bs like this.
How this company hasn’t gone under yet is astonishing. They make DKoldies look like a decent company.
If they keep this up they won’t last much longer unless scalpers keep them in business

It's possible that the game disc works well on older computers, but I'm not entirely sure. However, it's unfortunate that the company failed to realize the problems with the 3DO release, considering that you can burn your own ROM disc to play on its original hardware. It would be better if they partnered with different companies to manufacture official discs instead of scamming their customers. Given their track record, this wouldn't surprise me at all. But in all seriousness, this is bad.

It’s not what any fans expected or wanted that’s for sure
One telltale sign you have a game on a CD-R, no Compact Disc wordmark on the artwork. All games on CD had the basic wordmark. Those CD-R's would either have to have the recordable wordmark (which they won't because that would have consumers refuse to buy them) or not have a wordmark on at all. If they added a basic wordmark like the original 3DO game CD has on those CD-R's, they would be violating the standard, committing trademark violation and duping consumers, leading to action from the FTC or trading standards or even legal action.
So many ways to tell a CD-R there was no way LRG could ever hide it
Edit: Is there any recourse for this particular release? As someone who does open and play the games purchased from LRG, if this was my experience; and LRG did not explicitly state it would be on burned CD-Rs; I would be wanting a refund, even if it was opened. Pressed discs simply work better on the aging hardware for consoles like the 3DO/PC Engine CD/Dreamcast etc.
I guess if you want to ensure you're getting a pressed disc, you have to limit yourself to games on newer consoles that couldn't play burned discs.
This is still garbage though. I've bought 4-5 titles off LRG, some SNES and PS5 games.
I will definitely keep this in mind going forward.
