I have the time to study this a little better...you nailed it for sure. I LOVE this lick! Thanks a bunch for the great lesson....there's a ton of licks in there you can use in many other tunes....baddass! You gonna get to the rest of the leads? Great stuff....I especially love the two guitar harmonics near the end. I've always said...I'll listen to anything...so long as it's Lynyrd Skynyrd! hehe Lexington Lab Band rocks this tune big time!
The music world was robbed of an incredibly talented and all too often underrated Steve Gaines, who knows what he would have done if he would have gotten the opportunity and the time.
I totally agree!
Just imagine man, like dear god the smount of amazing riffs and licks he made in just that short time
I cant help but feel we only saw a very small glimpse of the greatness of Steve Gaines, RIP. Your opening solo was fantastic and you really nailed the sound and spirit of Steve's technique! Thanks!
Thanks Bob. I appreciate it. And I agree that it sure would've been nice to hear more of what was to come from Steve Gaines. He had that ability to use the same simple notes as everyone else and to make them sound unique and inspired. Had he not died then I suspect he'd be on a number of TOP lists.
Thanks Mark, Gaines was an awesome guitarist. And this is a terrific tune.
Gaines was awesome! I need to do the rest of this one!!
Yeah Steve has a couple solos on this one. Killer
He was an amazing player.
good job Mark. I used to play this song in a band using my 1981 Les Paul. People would go crazy. Now I can learn the lead correctly.
Well, making people go crazy (in a good way) is kind of what it's all about, so I wouldn't knock it!! :) Thanks for the kind comments!
Still one of my favorite videos on RUclips.
Thanks!!
Oh man I’ve been looking forever for a good tutorial of this song!!! I’ve only just gotten through this video but you are the BEST! It’s so hard to find good breakdowns of songs that are presented in a friendly, clear, concise, and easy going way. You’re awesome! Subscribed immediately. Thanks so much for this!!
Awesome! Thank you!
I have been working on this solo for about 3 or 4 days. playing 75% speed with no issues on Steves part. sound awful at 100% but MAN was I happy to read the caption for the firry time today and read that Steves part is the hard part :) thank you very much for this. My goal is to jam this with my future father in law who is a drummer.
Glad it was helpful. Rock on!
Please let’s see the rest of this songs solo’s. Their all so killer and good. It would be greatly appreciated. Great video
Thanks Lucas. We'll get to them. Tons of solos in the song.
Awesome lesson. Love that Lake Placid Blue G&L, my favorite color. Sad that Steve Gaines got taken before he could peak.
Thanks. Yes, it is sad Steve Gaines was taken, as with all the others in that crash. Funny you like the LP Blue - I do too. This one sat in the store for about 2 years before I offered on it. Got a great deal. The store owner said he just can't move blue guitars and won't order any more. My luck!
Wow, I’ve gotta say, you’re an inspiration to me, the way you play is not only dead on note for note to the exact same, your way of teaching is the easiest to follow and understand that I’ve found on RUclips, this is the only video I’ve seen of yours so far but if you can play Steve Gaines note for note as great as you did, then you can do anything and I’m looking forward to seeing some other lessons of yours
You're really too kind! I've got quite a few more videos, so check them out ... maybe not all as good as this one though. :) Once you have a chance to look around more, let me know what you're interested in learning. I'm always looking from ideas from subscribers! (Which I hope you'll be!)
That is absolute savagery from Steve Gaines..I'm going to start with the other two solo's! LOL . Mark thank you from the bottom of my heart. This is incredible.
You're welcome! Steve definitely Ross on this one. Gary and Allen rock on it too!
Thanks Mark for this wonderful lesson. Keep up on the Skynyrd lesson. Would love to see more Southern Rock including Molly Hattchet and The Outlaws!
Sounds like a good plan. Thanks for watching!
Excellent spot on killer Steve Gaines.
Thanks brother!
Dude that guitar sounds amazing. You should do more more more videos man. You don't need the fancy facilities when you've got a great sounding guitar, good amp, and knowledge between the ears. Kudos.
Thanks Chip!! I appreciate it. I'll keep 'em coming!
Thank you for posting this lesson - very articulate and well presented. Thanks again.
Thanks Michael. Appreciate the feedback!
great bridge ... I like my action a little high and standard strat doesn't have enough compensation for my likings...
also one of the all time coolest songs...thanks
Thanks for watching. Definitely a cool song!!
Hi Mark , from the deepest of my heart big thank you man , I’ve always wanted to learn this classic solo , amazing work you’ve done man ... you’ve nailed it .
Thank you from South Australia 🇦🇺
You totally made my day. Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
Leandro Machado Hey Leandro, lets make a classic Skynyrd cover band here in SA🇦🇺I’ll do Allen’s parts
Awesome lesson, glad to see you with a G&L as well
Thanks!!
Thank you very much for sharing I’m playing my guitar While I watch you watch the video I enjoyed it thank you so much
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
It really helps me to get better by watching you every day don’t want to pay money on lesson RUclips guitar lessons are better
Mark, your lessons are some of the best on youtube. I love this song, and you nail those licks as close to the original as I have ever heard. Thanks!
Thanks so much Ronnie!
Damn! So simple, yet so deceptive! I've been trying to learn this about a week an a half. Learning the notes was easy, but getting the licks just right, and up to speed, was a challenge. I feel I'm ready to go on to part II. I'm gonna make a couple of more passes, and then move on. Thanks for all of this, my man!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Your good man!!!!
Thanks brother!
Great job on this. Steve was new to the band but what a killer player he was!!
Thanks. He sure was a great player and a singer/songwriter too. Ronnie Van Zant said he was the most talented of all of them.
Thank-you very much Mark, you make me want to practice.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great job. Thanks for your time.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the lesson. I learn better licks from LS songs than I do from lick specific lessons, and you get to see how they are used in a song.
Thanks autocrow! I agree. Playing a lick in context makes all the difference!
Great lesson! Could you give a lesson on Steve's first solo? I feel like you could really explain what he's doing better than anyone else.
Hey! I plan on doing the whole song eventually. Such a great one. So sad that Steve Gaines was taken so young. He had a way of saying things with his guitar, didn't he?
He has a unique style that I'd love to emulate. The only part I struggle on is that quick riff at 0:10. Thanks for responding!
How did I miss this?!?!! This is awesome Mark👍😎🍺👏❤️
Thanks Cap!!
Help me Mr. Wizard. Help me. I going back in time two years to see this lesson.
LOL! "Magic" of RUclips!
You gonna do the rest of the licks on this tune Mark? Needum partum two.....
Lots of guitars on this tune. I'll do another part soon.
@@MarkZabel can't wait for more! Great song. lot's of simple leads that just sound great when done correctly.
@@DavidGoldZodiac thanks David. I just did part 2, so you can check it out!
More Skynyrd!!
You got it!
Awesome man. Thanks . Great Gaines study share
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and for the kind comment too!
Thanks a lot!
My pleasure!
Nice job, sir. Here's hoping you had a great Thanksgiving!
Thanks Jon. I *did* have a fantastic Thanksgiving. Hope you did too!
Nice!
Thanks!
Good job Mark, one of my favorite bands. Navy Mark...
They were awesome ... real rock!
Thanks!
My pleasure Steve. Thanks for watching!
excellent thank you.
Thanks Auggie!
Good one thanks
My pleasure Dan. Have to do part 2 and 3 sometime! Thanks for watching!!
Totally AWESOME Mark! Hope you had a GREAT Thanksgiving!
Thank you, I did have a GREAT one. Hope you did too!
Awesome Video Mark!
Thank you Glen!
Good lesson Mark I been trying to learn this song for years. Can you do gimmie three steps?
Thanks! Sure, I'll put Gimme Three Steps on the list of things to do.
I agree, Gimmie three steps is my top three w/ skynyrd.
Hi again Mark as usual you nailed it ..I am having fun getting "That Smell" down..I was wondering if you had tackled the solo for "i aint the one " yet? I would like to work on these two in conjunction with " every mothers son" Catch you later and KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK . The way that Skynyrd goes through Guitar Players ,they might be knocking on your door next.. Later STAY SAFE Jake P
Thans A J !! Great suggestions! The songs ... and the fantasy door knock! LOL! A man can dream.
wow very cool.this is one of my favorite songs because the guitars are so amazing. i love the live version on YT from 7/13/1977 Convention Hall. In it you see Steve, Allen and Gary and how incredibly the played together. The switches from one to the other was almost seemless so you should check it out. I think it's the only live version of That Smell
Yeah, thanks. Great version of it!
philadelphia 1977 fresno 1977 both underrated concerts look them up on youtube you wont regret it!
Well done! Have you ever managed to crack his solo at the end particularly the earlier dates on the tour (the Asbury Convention Hall) as none of Skynyrd's replacements have managed to get his complexity like you have and tend to go with the safer duet part
Thanks! I haven't heard it, but I'll give it a listen!
@@MarkZabel right at 5 minutes on this video. I'd imagine that it's just improv on pentatonic and other scales since Steve was still very new at that point but the way the two blend together jamming is a cohesion that not even Ed King could get with them to me as he always stood out rather than complimented Allen ruclips.net/video/hib4n9RmFrQ/видео.html
you're incredible
Thanks David!
He’s got the strat quak on track .....🐤
Thanks!!
{ + Great Song.! Great Guitar Lesson.! Rock On.! + }😎🎤🎸🎼🎧🔊🔊🔊😁💡🇺🇸🎥🎥🎥👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Mark. Love the emojis man!!
What effects pedals sound good with this solo? Thanks. You really nailed that solo Mark, just beautifully played by you.The band members who came up with that, really was a stroke of genius.
Best to stay away from pedals on this. If you must, use a little reverb ... and maybe just a little compression. Do your best to make it sound okay with just amp and fingers. (Sure, put some gain on the amp)
Great work Mark and thank you as i requested this like many others have. Any thoughts on showing some Gary Hoey Christmas licks and riffs for the holidays?
Thanks Tom. Hmm, the "shreddy" stuff isn't really my style, but I'll give it another listen and see if I can whip something up. Tommy Emanuel's Christmas ... that's more my style ... though Tommy's playing is beyond my reach, his Christmas playing is relatively subdued ... good food for thought with the Christmas music! Thanks!!
Most of his shred is very bluesy. I have noodled with a lot of it over the years. 12 days of x mas carol of bells Mr.grinch and feliz navidad. I'm mostly jam them rather than pay attention to detail like you do on the main melodies. Odd, for as cool as they are, I couldn't find any lessons on them. You can shred with the best of them. Your lesson on call me the breeze is stellar.
I wish steve was here to give us a lesson personally 😭😭
I just wish he were still here.
@@MarkZabel me too :(
solo lesson is great as usual, but can you share the specs on THAT TONE! sounds killer Mark! I didn't know it was possible to get a better Strat tone than Gaines until now. what's the amp/effects loop on that look like? tell us more than just position 2 and more treble :)
Hi Eric. I don't think there was much to it. Classic amp like Fender Twin or Princeton Reverb, tiny amount of reverb and compression, and the key ingredient; position 2 on the Strat. (bridge + middle = "quack"!) I'm using a BlackStar ID:Core emulating the Fender amp. You want to adjust the gain so that you get just a tiny amount of breakup. Hope that helps!
Super Cool Mark, as always!! Great! Is that an American Strat?
Thanks Angel. It's not an American Strat. It's a G&L Tribute Legacy. A few years back, the local store had a hard time moving it. I think people didn't like the color (which I like). The neck is a bit wider and flatter (12" radius) than a regular Strat, which I like also. Great guitar. Very solid. Nice sounding pickups. Terrific 2-point tremolo. Well-balanced.
For me, it's probably the closest I'll come to liking a Strat. I just have a hard time making Strats do what I want. They're great guitars, of course, but they're just not me. I used to have a beautiful 1985 American Standard Stratocaster - Candy Apple Red, maple fretboard. I got rid of it, because we didn't play well together. It's a shame, but it's true.
Thank you. I am going to look into getting one. Have you ever tried a G & L with the HSS configuration?
hey can you pleas do the first solo by steve
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll put it onto the list of lessons to consider.
What about the 1st steve gaines solo in the song? No video on that? That's the one that's giving me the most trouble.
what a mind twister... 4 me anyhow!
Ha! Another one, eh? Yes, how did Steve Gaines do it? It sounds fast, but really isn't. It uses really standard licks, but it sounds fresh. It's basically played in the same "blues box" we all know and love, but somehow he's using it differently. Anyway, for me that's what the mystery is here. He was so good!
def playing .009s
Hey Mark,
Thanks for the lesson!
The last two notes on the second line of the tab show 10th fret g string, 5th fret b string, but I didn’t see that on video. Am I missing something?
Thanks!
'Hi George. Oh yes, never noticed that. The "10" is a typo". It should be "7" like in the other parts of that fast lick. Thanks for watching ad for pointing that out!
Awesome
What are you playing through ?
A cheap $100 BlackStar amp. ID:Core10.
Hi Mark. I love your videos. What bridge do you have on this guitar?
Thanks. It's the stock tremolo. The guitar is a G&L Legacy Tribute. Wish I had kept it. Great guitar.
G&L Wonderful guitar.
Can you do a tutorial on the solo, Carlos Santana winning?
Great suggestion! I'll put it on the list.
Subbed
awesome that you gave steve gains a shoutout but wasn't this an Allen Collins tune?
Ronnie and Allen wrote it, but Steve, Allen, and Gary all took solos.
@@MarkZabel I just watched a Live show from back in the day. I seen where they all took solos on it. Damn those guys sounded like they were all the same, but when you're studying their solos you soon discover that Steve Gains & Allen Collins created the toughest parts. Thanks for breaking down all those killer songs on your channel. You come off as a really cool guy. I hope everything in life is going well for you. Peace.. Joe
Hi again Mark hope you are still picking and grinning . I have really been getting into Steve's stuff , But Lately I have been getting back into REO SPEEDWAGON , And Gary's Solo's ,and I was wondering if you have broken down the lead for BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN or any of their stuff. I'll bet you could tear those up.. KEEP ON PICKIN and HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS LATER Jake P
Thanks Jake! I did Flying Turkey Trot a long time ago. I should do a video on Gary's style. Great player.
I will be looking for that one and any more that you can put up. How's this for a coincidence? I used to date Gary's old girlfriend a long time ago when She and I were still in the Navy Long before I got married to my Wife I didn't know you were from Macon. I am a Cracker as well Small world huh? Later KEEP ON ROCKIN AND REMEMBER K.I.T.T STILL ROCKS !!
No muss, no fuss, just done right.
Thanks brother!
Yikes! Good job!
Thanks!
How about soom Leslie West, like Long Red?
Funny you mention Leslie, They wanted him to join Lynyrd Skynyrd to replace Ed King. Leslie wanted the name changed to Lynyrd Skynyrd Featuring Leslie West, no dice.
Sounds good. I did Theme From an Imaginary Western a while back. Here's the link if you want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/J-R_Oc8rqzE/видео.html
What effect is that we're hearing ?
Or amp?
No effects. Just a slight breakup from the amp. The key is the out-of-phase #2 position on the Strat.
Who plays that solo starting :54 ?
I study martial arts. And there are whats called EMBUSAN. Line of foot movement and body structure and flow. Many little details in just one movement to another. Playing guitar is no different. Just it fingers. Instead of FEET. YOU HAVE BEGINNING, ADVANCED. THEN EXTREME ADVANCED MOVEMENT. OF FEET AND FINGERS.
Did Part 2 ever materialize...???
Nah, I keep forgetting and the requests pile up. I'll get it back on the to-do list, 'cause I dig it. Thanks for the reminder!
Mark Zabel I and so many would appreciate that you are my favorite on here.. Hey another thing how about also an awesome song from the movie cheech and Chong . The song is called Lost due to incompetency.. It’s a beautiful song it’s just too hard to try with tabs. Thank you for your response have a good night Sir
@@macarelli2097 Thanks. I'll definitely get to another part of That Smell. Lost Due To Incompetence ... I could do the beginning before the second and third guitars and the soprano sax come in. It sounds 100% improvised to me. I could show how to improvise in that style over that chord progression. What I wouldn't do is play it note for note, except maybe the very beginning. Does that sound good to you? It's a cool chord progression and very loosely played. Very nice!
What about Steve Gaines first solo?
It's a nice little one for sure.
G&L Strat just sounds so much better than a Fender
Plays better for sure. Because someone "gifted" me an American made Fender, I "gifted" this one. Man, do I miss it. The Fender is the worst playing guitar in my collection. Sounds okay, but it needs constant adjusting to be playable. I think I'm giving up and just using it for slide from now on.
Wheres the tabs?
1:04
give me Allen Collins anyday
Allen, Steve, Gary ... it's all good.
Gary swears he used a Gibson Les Paul
Makes sense. This is Steve's part, just so we're on the same page.
Haven’t been able to afford a haircut for 6 years?
Brutal 😭
Thumbs down for making tabs unavailable....
Tabs are still available.
Such a tinny sound man... you need to be more cognizant of how it sounds recorded and not the room sound.
