    Look at Dan, he’s a pro !! 💪🏼 I love how you guide him, firmly but gently.
    Thank you for all the tips Jessica, I already moved the focus point before even pointing the camera at the subject but I was missing the composition bit ! I’ll give it a try 😊

    Dan is such a good sport. I just got a canon r5. But I used to focus and recompose, but I learnt to compose focus shoot. The R5 is going to rock my world I hope!

  • @matthewmallett4718
    @matthewmallett4718 2 года назад +1

    Focus recompose is a method many many photographers grew up with because that was the only option so old habits die hard. With very efficient autofocus systems in modern cameras that are reliable focus recompose is somewhat outdated. Ultimately its about having complete confidence in the equipment you use and the likes of Sony autofocus is a real gamechanger when it comes to changing "old school" methods.

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  2 года назад +1

      100% agree! It was hard to break the habit at the start though - very tough and like you said it’s a confidence-in-kit thing for sure!

    "Shit in, shit out.". That's what I had in mind for the 50+ years of photography I've been through. So, the closer I get to my initial idea/concept/composition/vision by the very moment I press the shutter button... the better !
    Nowadays, many would argue : "Yeah, but me having digital camera... easy schmeasy, I do what me fancy !". They hardly could be more wrong. A camera takes an image, BUT the photographer creates the image... THE image, the best one for the moment and the location and the angle(s).
    So, in skipping the composition stage of image creation you're just missing out on the crucial part of your creative process. Sure you can crop some, reframe some, tilt some, but the main share of the burden is being supported on set, when shooting (and filming, for videography/cinematography). Not on your stool watching at a screen.

    I do compose first especially with run to me shots. Sometimes I've had in my head a composition and I shot it with that in mind but when I get to editing it I found a crop that is a bit more striking/powerful. I guess that's like finding another image inside an image? And/or maybe I need more practice in recognizing a strong composition. I don't know but sometimes I see a stronger image when editing and I crop in a bit. Yes, I am mindful of composition before I shoot. It is challenging with animals as they can move quite a bit. I had lots of practice shooting at the shelter. Not all those animals are well trained. I suppose people can be challenging as well. I think Dan makes a great model.

  • @crysania

    I used to do this method with moving the focus box around and attempting to compose beforehand (except when shooting unpredictable action when it was just shoot and compose afterward). Now I have a Sony mirrorless with eye AF, so I use a wider focus area (zone or wide depending on the area) and use the eye AF so I can compose in camera. I LOVE that about the eye AF. No need to keep moving my focus box around.

    For me personally I love to zoom out a bit and then compose afterwards in PS. But I do animals and quite often action shots, so this is also a good way to keep track of the running animal. I'm currently shooting on an a7iii and I'll have to switch to a camera with more pixels to keep this cropping going but I love it 😅
    However the more experience I get, the better I become in composing straight away in the camera 😊

    Always have done C . Its just best to try get everything right in camera to start with . I'm just getting into pet photography but ive done this in landscape photography for years , maybe because i shoot APSC 24MP , and you get less pixels to work with .

      Does the z50 allow you to move a focus point with eye af active too? That’s the canon limitation that makes this a bit defunct because you can’t do both at the same time, only one or the other. I still use my focus point to ensure the grab is in the right place for the eye (sometimes it thinks a finger is an eye etc)
