This was the first RUclips video that I watched of 2024. So far I have no regrets. This is one of my favorite movies from my early adolescence. It's never too late to cover a classic and thank you guys for doing just that. And I particularly like that one of you had never watched the film before. So welcome to the world of Riddick my friend.

Vin Diesel is often cast as the good hearted criminal actually, same as in XXX, Fast & Furious franchise, Babylon AD, but for some reason it seems like he's never allowed to be as savage as he is in the Riddick Franchise. None of those other characters have nearly the same lethality about them, then again Riddick WAS a murderer after all, a straight up ROGUE.

  • @buckduane1991

In the extended cut with extra dialogue, it explains the drug addiction is the result of Riddick having stabbed him in the back and taking out a nerve cluster that leaves him in severe pain… and it is why in the later movies Riddick mentions which ribs in the back you need to stab, and how it was a “mistake he made only once”. He literally needs them to even function, and reveals that his own prescription supply was lost in the crash. He blames Riddick for the state he is in, and thinks by bringing in Riddick alive will finally give him resolution and the money to get the surgery he needs to fix it… however, the drug he takes from the medkit messes with him a bit since it is not meant to be taken at the dose he uses. The original (pre-theater) cut leaves you more sympathetic for him, and makes his degradation more tragic leading up to his end.

I spent an entire summer with my father and an older brother of mine binge-watching pitch black almost every single day. We would watch at least once in the afternoon completely and then start to watch it again. Once we hit the halfway point and my dad had to go to work. We wouldn't watch it again until he got home and then finish it. Probably one of my favorite movies and 1 of the funner summers. I can remember from my younger years.

Hear me out…what if Dominic Toretto from Fast n’ Furious is a descendant of Riddick
    It’s all connected, it’s all Family 😂
23:30 I didn’t remember Pitch Black being this funny but man the bit of humor they do get in is super nice and actually humanizes Riddick a lot more despite the time when he’s serious and utilizing his Furyan heritage.

In Alien Vs Predator there is a cool scene at the end in which the Predator appears in mid air and sticks the alien queen in the head with his spear. That scene is fantastic. This film has a similar scene in which Riddick guts an alien, stands up and says "Did not know who it's f**king with." Now that is ridiculously cool.

By the way, the merc didn't steal the meds from the back, they fell off with the rest of the ship. His drugs were hidden in his gear. The problem for Fry was that he had that substance handy and still let her crewmate, who had saved all their lives even if they didn't know it, die in such pain. This movie is a wonderful collection of characters, all well written, none of them perfect, and such a wonderful payoff. Thanks for reviewing it, loved this!

Also just wanted to say I love this long-format commentary collab
Would love to see a few of these with other film critics!
I had my own commentary along with the watch and I have to say I really enjoy hearin your more unscripted comments. I had no idea this was filmed in Australia and the fact that your acting teacher was in this is a sick easter egg
Overall this smaller contained story of Riddicks worked a lot better than CoR but I enjoyed the larger picture CoR tried tell with the prophecy of the Furyan race.
If anything this contained story really let’s us in that Riddick is a merc with a code and everyone else around him, while somewhat good, has their own agenda.
Also felt the comedy was nicely placed for a movie of this era in entertainment. Special effects were on point and good for the atmosphere, monster were intriguing but not fully focused on. Used in just the right way where you learned enough about them to make them a threat.
Like we get a taste of the lore of Riddicks world but it a nice decent taste that one could be satisfied by or possibly want more.
I do wish we had a prequel to even this movie or a show based on him. Maybe in the future.
There’s so much more I could say but I am a big fan of this movie and other contained sci-fi films like it.
If anything I feel like the universe of Riddick could somewhat rival Dune if truly expanded upon in a responsible way
Other than that, Happy New Years F.C.E!! Can’t wait to see what you do next mate 😊

This was one of the last few ORIGINAL MOVIES to come out in the last 25+ YEARS that wasn’t a REBOOT OR CARBON COPY of other movies that had come before, The fact it spawned 3 more sequels and 1 animated movie between 2&3 is absolutely awesome!! With the feeding. I always interpreted it as a dormancy. When the sun is out they’re basically asleep. Only moving when disturbed. Like when she enters the cave, she doesn’t get swarmed.
Then the sun goes away and they swarm like locusts. Feeding until only a few survive, those few breed, then dormancy until the sun goes away.

this is a decent movie. Note: it actually has a female lead, and she is not too bright. she makes more than a few mistakes, that may have cost the odd (other person) their lives.
with a female lead, riddick being a supporting character, this movie is whoa-ken but does not get much notice for being whoa-ken. it is a decent whoa-ken movie.

I really liked this film, cheesy as the dialogue was. Riddick is at peak badass one-liner delivery here. Love the look of the aliens and the great sense of suspense and tension. The planet itself and its life forms makes no sense of course - no vegetation to produce oxygen or be the base of a food chain, no ecosystems or prey of any kind, just a massive population of huge predators that are nocturnal and eyeless for no reason since they have no predators. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it is a lot of fun.

This is a great movie and I remember seeing it not long after it came out but there is always one thing that's bugged me. I like the character Jack, but I was never convinced she was a boy; and I'm always surprised when other people don't notice. It's not a flaw or anything, just an observation.
I wish there was another Riddick movie where he finds his home world. The character deserves some closure.
