    I think that's basically what it is. Testing the waters and seeing what they can get away with.
    Heck, if they did $100, some people would buy it. Maybe not a ton, but enough to make money.

      That does not make sense. At all. Investopedia: “A microtransaction is a business model where users can purchase virtual items for small amounts of money.” Wikipedia: “Micro-transactions [..] are a business model where users can purchase virtual goods with micropayments.”

    • @leedevee
      @leedevee 2 года назад +2

      Also, that’s simply not how language works. ‘Micro’ says something about ‘transaction’, comparable to ‘microchip’ and ‘microp*nis’.

    • @finnycopper
      @finnycopper 2 года назад +25

      @@leedevee alright, so, let me start off with a problem I had recently.
      So I was on steam, right, and I was looking for an RPG on there, cause I really liked games like Persona 4 Golden and Undertale on PC.
      Having some money burning a hole in my pocket, I checked out some games with Steam’s tag system.
      Firstly I checked “RPG”, which - obviously, right? Where else would I check?
      However, under “RPG”, I didn’t find the right games. I found titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Far Cry, games that had RPG *elements*, and were called “RPGs”.
      So, I went to the next one. Y’see, Persona 4 Golden has a really fun party-based system, and so do a lot of classic games, so maybe I could search under “Party-based”?
      I did it, and again, what came up was not what I wanted. The new final fantasy games, yknow, the ones that have mainly 3D action combat, which is not what I was looking for at all.
      Alright, now i’m a bit frustrated. So, maybe I should try “Turn-based”?
      I put in the “turn-based” tag, and I actually got some of the ones I wanted!
      I thought, but looking closer at every one, they were all quickly produced garbage from RPGmaker.
      Ok ok ok ok ok, well maybe the whole RPG thing doesn’t even need to be there. I really like games like Danganronpa, so maybe the “anime” tag would help me find one singular cool game?
      Anime tag it is. But you know what’s under the “anime” tag? I sure didn’t. Basically all the games were either
      1) Regular puzzle game with anime girl to the side of the screen, or
      2) The same generic trash we saw from the “turn-based” tag, only more refined.
      So at this point I was at my wits end. Frustrated, I went back to the “RPG” tag, and looked at what games were popular with the community.
      Within a minute I found the kind of game i’m looking for, Hylics 2, which looked amazing. Being a stickler for sequential order I picked up Hylics 1, which also had the same tags: “RPG”, “Turn-based”, “Party-based”, the whole shebang.
      The game’s great, by the way, but I really want you to ponder something. Why? Why did I have so much trouble finding this game, when it was liked by its community and had fantastic scores? Why did it take so much trouble to find a good game?
      Thought over it? It’s a simple answer, really: marketing. For games to get out there, they market to whatever tags they can, hoping that someone picks up their game, irregardless of its genuine quality.
      Games have a huge problem with this, using specific terms for things that fall in a much more grey area, it’s the reason why, although they’re marketed as “rogue-likes”, some games in the genre are referred to as “rogue-lites”. There are differences between the games, rogue-likes being 100% random for most of the game, and rogue-lites instead offering some progression within your playthrough (with items you maintain, levels you gain, etc after dying). It’s a small difference, but to many roguelike fans it’s a big difference.
      This long essay is to provide an example I hope you’re getting now, words do *not* always follow their definitions. Same thing with slang, same thing with any language, words are ideas but they aren’t static, many of them can be fluid and reused for improper situations.
      It’s especially so for commonly used words, something like “microtransactions” I dunno. When a word is commonplace, often times people will use that word in reference to general ideas, like purchases in already purchased games, rather that literally “micro transactions”. Nobody would use “macrotransactions” for large purchases, we already have words for that, and most consider stuff either DLC, downloadable content that adds stuff to a game (often for a hefty price), or microtransactions, unnecessary fees for stuff the developers could have likely put in the game themselves. There’s a reason there’s no “free microtransactions” when there is “free DLC”, it’s because we associate the word microtransaction with unnecessary fees of any kind, not added content, and especially not small fees.
      If a game released DLC for $1, that transaction of buying it would be almost microscopic, but as it’s something that legitimately adds to the game, it wouldn’t be a microtransaction.
      Look man I know this is bait (and a bad one too mate like come on you can do better, Ken M is looking!), but whatever I had a fun time writing it.
      Honestly though, baiting for a reaction under an Arlo video’s comment section is selling yourself short. Even if you spit your “controversial” takes all over the place, good quality bait is much better than lots of it. If you wanna troll people, do it better

      Each one also comes with a special Spirit Board (new spirits) and a new Challenge Mode (with at least 8 stages) as well!
      Each one comes with 7 alternate (free) costumes!
      Some fighters are more than just 1 character (Pyra/Mythra, Steve & Alex & Zombie & Enderman, Byleth, four different Dragon Quest Heroes).
      Some of them come with multiple stages (Joker, Steve).
      And some have 50+ new music tracks (Terry).
      And best of all, all of it is brandnew content. Things we never had before.
      5,99 per fighter pack is alright for what you get. The 2 Fighters Passes are even more worth it, since you save 5 bucks with each.
      The Mii costumes for 0.79€ however, are not worth it, especially if you have already paid for them in the last game. Geno, Lloyd, and Monster Hunter should have been free this time around. I love the Mii fighters but paying for most of their costumes drags them down.
      But a Pokémon skin for 40.00€ that does absolutely nothing is just.. wow. Whoever made that decision, I respect your courage. Hell is definately not hot enough for you.

At the time it launched I was working in a dead end job and in the middle of a depressive episode so I didn't see a problem dropping 100+ dollars trying to get this character bc I thought "I'll be happy when I get this so who cares what I do", that I should indulge myself in the "present moment" bc I felt like I had no future, that I had a job so I could make back what I spent. When I did finally pull that character I looked back at how much I spent and how insane I felt trying to just chase a few bursts of serotonin that would only last five minutes at best. They release countless free title updates for their main line games AND their spin-offs, and when they drop DLC that costs money, you’re basically getting an ENTIRE GAME’S worth of content from that purchase. Sure they have micro-transactions, but it’s typically about $2 for a special layered armor or sticker set. Mainly, if you want a particularly cool looking armor set or weapon, you just… play the game to get it. That’s it. You know, how it SHOULD be.

There is no way I'd even spend more than maybe a dollar for something like that. But I think Smash has the right idea. 50 cents for a cosmetic is respectable. How can you buy that much for the same as one skin? The greed of this world is honestly just appalling. Keep vigilant my friends, don't waste your money on unfair transactions. Remember, something has value, and compare that value to other things around you, in this case let's go with Mii Costumes. No remasters, no ports, no emulation.|

You're absolutely not literally burning $40 it you're getting a skin but you're still feeding into a bad system at a rate that I personally find objectionable.

    Intentionally making an unreasonable demand and then "compromising" by scaling it back to what you originally wanted is also a common psychological tactic. If someone wants to sell something for $20, knowing that's more than the current $15 items, they might instead try to sell it for $40. They will get a few suckers who will buy it at that price, but they KNOW most of them will complain, and then they will claim "We are listening to the feedback and lowering the price to $20", and then they will make it seem like those who understandably STILL complain are being unreasonable. "We lowered it by half! What more do you want?" while not brining up that it's still more than the $15 items. (Nevermind the fact that $15 is itself WELL beyond reasonable either)

      Side rant: happens with stores as well. They incrementally raise prices of things over the year, so that packet of (let's say) bacon that originally cost $4.29 becomes $4.89, then $5.69, then $5.89, then OH look! a sale on bacon, now it's $4.29! Over a dollar off! What a deal! But the sale only lasts a week so hurry up!
      Except no. I work at a store and when we do price changes it always goes up. Very rarely does the price of something go down, and even then it's like -.20c. Compared to the +.90c minimum increase to most of the other things.
      Course it could be that I live in California and the only thing that doesn't go up are wages for non-CEO's.

Back when CTR first released, he made a video warning about how the skins in the game seemed overpriced and that the process for gaining in-game currency was under-balanced and literally random. So here's the thing, those tickets Arlo was talking about as far as I've seen is not in the capsule you use energy you get from playing games, those tickets are fashion tickets for your character, not the skins of the Pokemon. To get the tickets for the skins that Arlo is talking about is from boxes you open after getting all the rewards in the Battle Pass. Even so, this Ninetales skin is not available with those tickets you use to get the skins, at least the last time I logged on the game today. So the only way to get this skin is shelling out that $40 on gems to buy it. I don't blame Arlo for getting mixed up though because they have TOO MANY different items and currencies to get the Pokemon, held items, consumable items, clothes, and skins in this game.
    Edit: My luck must be poor cause I only ever got those types of tickets from the boxes at the end of the Battle Pass, yet when I use the Capsule it likes to give me the same pair of shirts, sandals, and pants for what feels like a million times. So the Holowear Tickets used for the Pokemon skins can come from Capsule pulls too. Still stands though, only way to get this Ninetails skin is shelling out that $40, no way to grind for it in game currently.

    The story really shows how the road to hell is paved with good intentions. VALVe introduced microtransactions into TF2 to act as a kind of tip jar and finance the continued development of the game. Robin Walker talked in past interviews about how the player base wanted to continue to support TF2 feeling that the low entry barrier and consistent free updates merited additional payments. VALVe even introduced a system where community content creators could get their creations added to the game AND would get a 25% cut of the earnings made from people buying their creations from the Mannconomy store.
    Now we live in a world where every AAA developer and publisher looks to put price tags on portions of their game even before it's released.

    Minor correction:
    Currently, as of typing this, it is actually impossible to purchase the Ninetails skin without paying money unless you got free gems from the beta or something since you can only purchase it with gems which are unobtainable through gameplay and can only be bought with real money.
    Maybe, in the future, it would be made available for Holowear tickets but those are hard to come by and are luck based. For example, I only have 30 after playing for 70 hours.
    Edit: Just want to be somewhat fair to the game, 30 is a fair amount of tickets. I can buy a decent skin with it since most of them are like 18 tickets. I never finished the battle pass for the special loot boxes and it seems you could get a fair amount of tickets from that.
    Unfortunately some of the good skins like Fashion Style Gardevoir and Fashion Style Eldegoss were removed from the Holowear ticket section with the mobile release and are now only purchasable with gems only (real money, roughly $8.00US each). $8 US is also the minimum amount of money you have to spend to get the cheapest skins since the $4 US one (outside of first purchase) does not give you enough gems.

      @@Nidolord777 Well, before the mobile launch, you could get some decent skins like the Fashion Eldegoss and Fashion Gardevoir for about 18 tickets which was very reasonable, especially if you completed the battle pass cause you would get access to a special loot box with a 20% chance of getting 10 Holowear tickets. You could get one of these boxes roughly every 1.5 days from doing daily quests and would have a week or so of special boxes before the season ends and the battle pass expires. The pass itself is free but paying for a premium version unlocks more rewards and I think allows you to skip some levels of it. Special skins with new animations would cost 60 or 88 tickets but you have a chance of getting them from the normal loot box at about 0.5%, 0.8% or 1.0%. Thing is that, after the mobile release, the made some, but not all, of the good skins gems only and added some, in my opinion, really basic and boring looking skins where the pokemon just wears a colours team shirt and a hat/ bandana.

    I remember seeing jokes about unite being a pokemon clone of league of legends, but man they're getting increasingly accurate.
    As for adding to the list of better things to burn 40 bucks on?
    Buy the complete collection of a tv series from before the 2000s, if you find something nostalgic odds are you can get multiple!
    Buy a few dozen of your favorite candy bars and feel like a kid again.
    Buy 8 large cartons of cheese fish crackers and make the noisiest pillow fort for your cat.

Still they popularized spending more than a few bucks on a cosmetic that took drastically less time than developing anything else in the game. Not to mention the limited-time event exclusives which you can spend even more money on, since there's always a low ceiling cap how much you can get for doing optional objectives during it.

      $40 retail would get you an entire expansion pack, though I think anything that still does expansion packs (is it just Civilization at this point?) ends up having huge discounts a couple months after release. $40 worth of content for a game like this should probably unlock 8 new characters, one of which has a new mechanic, along with a new role that 3+ existing characters get reworked to fill. I know this is free to play and should constantly release new content, but $40 for a single thing is completely ridiculous.

    • @rpgfanatic9719
      @rpgfanatic9719 2 года назад

      @@metleon It's not even just a thing, it's a thing that has no gameplay value. There are only 3 Pokemon game styles you should ever buy. Main series Pokemon, Pokemon SNAP 1 and 2, and the Pokemon mystery dungeon series. I'm not going into detail of other companies shortcomings, but know that they didn't bother to work off of the main series and instead made something completely half assed. Mystery dungeon is the only series that seemed to take advantage of the battle mechanics that main series already had ready for them.

    • @rpgfanatic9719
      @rpgfanatic9719 2 года назад

      @Adolh Feetler How are they a scam?
      GC pokemon games are part of main series as the battle system is identical and they have less content than the average main series games. No frontier or contests or even a regular battle tower. Pokémon ranger is just a touch screen ruiner.
      That's why you emulate them on PC, not buy them. There is no reason to buy them unless you want to collect them. Although gen 6 and 7 are worth the buy.

      @@Buglin_Burger7878 Well yes everything disappears one day. Yet the full games you buy mean that years after their release I can still play said game 10 or even 20 years later. The lifespan of so many free to play games tells me that on average that will not be the case. The idea of paying that much for a single item within the game is incredible. Whether or not the game is free $40 is just too much. You can argue that the game is free yet what happens when the they decide to stop supporting it? When the amount of people playing it dwindles to nothing? You're stuck. While $40 spent on a full game will still be there. There will be a means to play it. Nothing last forever yes but I can still play the original pokemon games from my youth now if I want to. Free to play games are on average temporary in some form or another. Once the support ends so does any means of playing it, ever. Digital games? There are means to play them.

      @@Mabb60 Not talking about the game itself. They know exactly what they're doing by making it free to play. By doing so they can nickle and dime you with anything they add. Free to play is a continuous stream of money for these companies. Even more so in a game based on competition. The pricing model is built in to how they do match ups. If not competition then it's built on getting everything in that game. Which means that for the pokemon brand these things are a gold mine. They didn't make their game free to play out of the kindness of their hearts, they did it to make money.
