Floor has said that this song is one of her favorit Nightwish songs.....it's also one of mine absolute favorit songs.....greetings from the worlds most peaceful border in the North of Sweden and Finland....(it's just a river between our borders).....

@@BradAlenaMetalReactions Most certainly! Finns don't joke about IMPORTANT things! lol. The saying started originally when Finland won the icehockey world championships for the first time in 1995 in Sweden, beating the home team 4-1 in the final.
Aroud 80 000 people gathered at the Helsinki market square. As many as in Wacken 2013 saw Nightwish. It was crazy. I was there, it is only a few minutes walk from where I live, but people came from all parts of Finland.
People hugging strangers, not typical to Finns. And swimming (half) naked in the fountain Havis Amanda, sculpture of a naked lady of the sea. That is a long tradition too. It started a long time ago, don't even know when, with students First of may celebrations, including placing a white student cap on Havis Amanda's head.
We, Finland, the nation, the whole people, not the team alone, won also in 2011 and 2019, the last one without our best players, everybody said, no chance in hell for the Finnish team. But we met once again at the square against all odds. When ever the Finnish team loses though, then it seems to be the players' fault. The people washes it's hands.The defeat has nothing to do with us!lol.
We even stole swedes' new song in 1995, Den glider in, It (the puck) is gliding in. Became a big hit in Finland. Swedes were so sure they were going to win. If we ever want to beat any particular country it is our neigbour, Sweden. It is funny that Finland happened to have a swedish head coach at that time. Oma koira puri, Own dog biting the swedes.

OK Brad. I’m gonna have to give it to you. 👍🏻 You actually said eclipse. The eclipse was August 11, 1999. 222 days of light then an eclipse. Tuomas is a bit of an astronomical buff so an eclipse is something he could wrap his poetic genius around. I love Floor’s version, but I also like Tarja’s version. Especially the video of the band members dressed as medieval warriors and fighting in a serious war. 😄🤘 This song is used in some sinking ship documentaries.
I love Floor but I prefer Tarja’s voice for this one. I first saw the music video that only featured a Tarja in the video in a meadow.
I saw that one too, but I get a kick out of seeing the guys dressed in medieval garb. 😂

The Tarja version 1999 is epic!
Floor’s voice is just insanely beautiful. Never ceases to amaze how fantastic she is live. Simply owns the stage and the crowd - shows off her power even on such a restful, beautiful ballad.

This song was written for the solar eclipse in 2000 or 2001, it was cloudy of course where I lived. It was in august if I remember correctly so maybe the 222th day of the year. The song isn't even complete, no guitar solo and no you know who :)

Parts of Norway, Iceland, Sweden, _Finland_ , Canada, Alaska and Antarctica are the countries which have six months nights and six months days. Far North/South (polar) countries experience "days" with 24-hour periods full daylight or full night for months on end.
First you need to know Finland has a long dark wintertime where there's not much sun, some days just a couple hours or barely at all. Tuomas and a lot of Finnish artists glorify the darkness, love and longing and sometimes death which are all intertwined. Trying to find beauty even from the dark thoughts, for me, is the genius of Tuomas. Sunset is also one of the most beautiful things, and can move your emotions. The short moment just before pitch black is magical.
Whenever you get around to The Greatest Show on Earth i highly recomend taking that from this show as well
Because this band is from Finland some of the background to the lyrics are possibly a bit explained when you know this from Wikipedia: A quarter of Finland's territory lies within the Arctic Circle and the midnight sun can be experienced for more days the farther north one travels. At Finland's northernmost point, the sun does not set for 73 consecutive days during summer, and does not rise at all for 51 days during winter
As a long time NW fan i highly recommend 7 Days to the Wolves (Wembley).. and please take some time to deep dive into that song and its structure.. a masterpiece created by Tuomas, and extraordinary performed by the band. You wont regret it.
It was written to commerate the full Solar Eclipse in Finland in 1999.
Song was inspired by a Solar Eclipse in 1999. I know in Nov. and Dec. there is not much sunshine time in Finland. Or it could be Tuomas being Tuomas letting you take from it what you feel. Nice song whatever you get. I'm sure the Army will have all the info. Nice reaction.

This song was originally written for Tarja Turunen. At first Tuomas refused to write this song when he was requested to do so to celebrate the solar eclipse that arose on the European sky in 1999. He said that he doesn't write any song by request, especially if it must be a ballad, no more than 4 minutes long & with a catchy chorus. Although I like both Tarja's & Floor's versions of this song, for me the best one vocally is that by Elina Siirala, who is Tuomas' 2nd cousin. Elina was a Finnish opera singer, who founded her own metal band in 2011 & later in 2016 was asked to join an international metal band Leaves' Eyes as their lead vocalist. First time listening to Floor's version of the song. It pains me to admit I like it better than the original.
People ... including me ... mesmerized by Floor's singing, but the bass in this song is equally lovely. Without those lovely flowing bass lines this would be just another song.
Thoumas was asked to produce this masterpiece for the eclipse of the sun !

It's starting to open up a little in Illinois. But Americans can't help getting complacent. That's how we ended up with this government. Thanks for your well wishes and that goes double for me!

14th May 1940 bombing of the open city of Rotterdam by the Germans (80 years ago). 75 years celebrating the end of WWII in the Netherlands on 4th of May.

Tarja FOREVER.
Its a beautiful song, but not my favorite. I just get bored. 😊 I think you were close. If you are far north, you have the midnight sun in the summer, but in the winter the sun does not come over the horizon, so its one long night. People can get insomnia and get depressed of this. I dont know if that is what this is about. But just some facts that might be interesting to your angle on it
Tarja and Floor are excellent singers, both would be perfect for singing operas and although I personally prefer Floor, I like both versions of many nightwish songs sung by them.
but while Tarja makes songs a game of style and technique, when Floor sings she seems to live the songs, with such a passion that it enchants those who listen to her.
imho basically the difference between the style of Tarja and Floor can be summed up in this way: Tarja: watch me, I am singing here, Floor: i sing for you.
As Tuomas lives in Finland and a lover of space science the Northern Light and the solar eclipse (not seeing the sun for most of the year) is very well known reality of the song’s context. Another aspects is his believe in Darwinisme: how it took a long time before the first sunbeam reaches the earth. The clou: the melancholic mood of Tuomas made that he wants his live continue like it was forever like it was in the early days with the girlfriend when he was young. If this could not be he rather wants to go down forever (like sleeping beauty) but most of all he wants to go down with her forever like the sun did go down yearly for a very long time.

@O. Van Gent Where have you gotten the idea that Tuomas has his house in Lapland? His house and home is in Kitee, 550 kilometers south from Laplands southern border, so it is in the southeastern part of Finland. And there is no sunless time in winter at all in thise parts of Finland.

Their songs Lappi and Auroae are so beautiful it gave me the idea he must have lived there for a long time. Not just been there for a while. But now I know you never could know enough about that beautiful country Finland is and where exactly the location of Lapland is)
O. Van Gent Well, I’ll give you that much that Tuomas loves to hike and spend time in Lapland. He is an enthusiastic fisherman and there are some really good fishing rivers here in Lapland, where I live. And not knowing how to write city names in finnish on google maps it is hard to find places. It is past midnight right now and sun just dissappeared. I was in sauna two hours ago in total sunshine, it was very nice 😊
a tortured masterpiece? Tuomas hated the process that resulted in the song apparently, and wont ever work for a commission again! One of their most popular ballads was the result.
@@BradAlenaMetalReactions I believe he was commissioned by a government body to write a song to celebrate the total eclipse of the sun and he just felt too pressured to come up with something by a set deadline! I think the idea of being paid to do the song as a job might have irked him a bit as well.

Floor has made some old songs her own (like Ghost Love Score) but I can't stand her voice on this one. Tarjas voice on that songs was just flawless and floating over the music, but Floors voice sounds like she's trying too much. Maybe you should listen to a live version of "Sleeping sun" with Tarja too - just to see the difference.
Tarja is a good singer, but her voice is cold and sterile. Floor brings also warmth and emotions in this song. Now it touches people.
