  • This video shows you the descent and landing at a small airport in Zimbabwe - all in a non radar environment.
    Special emphasis in this video is on the unique radio procedures and the use of the flight director panel.
    Your comments and questions are always very welcome!

      Hi James,
      well said!
      Compared to the jets I fly single pilot, the King Air B350 is "loaded" with switches.
      A lesser degree of automation. Keep in mind that the King Air is a design of the 1970's.

      Radio communication is an important part of flight safety.
      Flying in different countries with different "accents" requires some adjustment.
      In case I do not understand 100% what ATC means it is a "say again please".

    Greetings from a subscriber here in Zambia. Planning my first trip to Charles Prince soon hopefully so was great to see it feature!
    For those of us with dreams of one day flying around the world would it be possible to include handling fees paid at each location? Perhaps on your slide shows. Whilst one can get a vague idea on cost and availability of fuel it is very hard to track down what one needs to budget for handling fees.
    Love the videos. Many thanks for taking the time and effort to Share.

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  Месяц назад +2

      Bleed air is taken out of the engines to pressurize the cabin (other things too, but mainly for pressurization).
      The King Air B350 is certified to maintain a guaranteed climb performance after an engine failure.
      As bleed air "bleeds off" power from the remaining engine, the engineers gave the pilot a switch to reduce that amount of air taken from the engine and increase the power of the remaining engine. All to ensure a climb gradient.
      In a small Piper Seneca, the climb rate after an engine failure is a "hit & miss" and depends on the conditions. And luck...
      In the B350 it is guaranteed.
      That's all behind the switch - no rocket science.

    Couldn't the A/P be disengaged using the red button next to the trim switches like usual in other aircraft?
    Also, did you have to depressurize the cabin after landing?
    Is it necessary to turn off the engine bleeds before shutdown or should they stay open?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  15 дней назад

      If you disengage the AP with the BRB big red bottom the yaw damper disengages too. Not comfortable for the passengers in the King Air 350 with the long cabin. I use the BRB just before landing only.
      The pressurization is set to 500ft above landing elevation, so the cabin should be depressurized before landing. Part of the checklist. If all goes wrong, the weight on wheel switch on the landing gear will open the outflow valve and depressurizes the cabin after touch down.
      The bleed valves should be cycled to the position “instruments only” before engine start.

    What's the reasoning behind requiring engine anti ice ON just before landing. Let's say in this case, no visible moisture or low temperatures around incase of a Go-Around. Plus I would imagine anti ice would "steal" lots of bleed air for that maximum power incase of a go-around.
    Otherwise very nice video as always.

      The "anti-ice" (better word: inertial separator) protects the compressor blades from debris and pebbles that might be loose on these king of runways.
      In this aircraft, the engine anti-ice is just a mechanical deflector, it does not affect bleed air.
      It increases ITT though, so the engine may produce less than rated power in a "hot&high" environment.
      So in case of an engine failure, with full power needed on the "good" engine, one should switch off the anti-ice.

      "ANTI-ICE" is an incomplete description of the system.
      It is a flap in the engine intake that throws out particles of the engine intake air before damage of the compressor can occur.
      In icing conditions, these particles can be ice. In operations like thins one, we care about pebbles and stones lying on the runway - happens often in Africa. Hence the activation of anti-ice before landing.

    Why engine anti-ice ON on approach?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  Месяц назад

      A better systems description of the 'anti-ice" would be "inertial separator".
      In the PT6 engine, an additional flap affects the airflow into the compressor and throws out particles before they can enter the compressors and may cause damage.
      While in icing conditions, these particles are formed of ice, on a landing on an airstrip in Africa these particles could be small pebbles, dust and stones. Hence I switched on the "anti-ice" (inertial separator) during final approach - to have the system ready once touching down on the runway.
      Thanks for watching my videos in such detail and thanks for the detailed question.
      Happy Landings,
      Capt. Guido

    Looking at the cockpit of this king air. What a cluttered panel compared to so many private jets.

      Hi Wayne,
      the design of the king Air is from the 1970's.
      You are correct, the cockpit is quite complex.

    Hi Cpt, nice video.
    The caption in your last picture is the wrong airport code - reads GVCP not FVCP :).
