The body being held up by a bed of swords is a reference to the Mahabharat, a Hindu epic about a succession war between two branches of a family: the Pandavas (protagonists) and Kauravas (antagonists). In it, the mentor of all of the leaders in the battle on both sides, Bhishma, is shot by Arjuna of the Pandavas and lays dying on a bed of arrows. Bhishma, despite siding with the Kauravas, is still a much revered figure by Arjuna and the Pandavas and many Indians. In this case, the imagery used in the movie is evocative of this. Our main character technically sided with the British, but his actions are still worthy of admiration.

It's believed that Dirty Dozen took inspiration from Do Ankhein Barah Haath because the plot lines are quite similar about prisoner reforms.
Yes we do watch Hollywood movies. I have a particular liking for westerns (Stagecoach, Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, War Wagon, Hondo, Fort Apache, Gunfighter etc.), mainly because of the books written by Louis L'amour. In the late 1970's they used to broadcast one English movie on TV, (mostly American), evey Saturday, late night, especially classics like Casablanca, Gaslight, The Big Sleep, It's a wonderful Life, Roman Holiday, Guns of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare etc. and movies made by Hitchcock (Notorious, North By Northwest, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, etc.).
You definitely need to watch tanhaji... The story of one of the most iconic military generals in Indian history... His king Shivaji Maharaj is one of the most beloved warrior kings in India till date...
RRR actually was not the first Indian movie to break-out and acheive international fame (although I think it was the first one to get commercial success in the US). Lookup the movies made by Satyajit Ray, an Indian director, especially The Apu Trilogy made between 1950 and 1959. The second movie in the trilogy Aparijato (The Unvanquished) was the most critically acclaimed of the three, but you really need a lot of patience 🙂. Akira Kurosawa famously said, "Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon." Praising Ray's contribution to the world of cinema, Martin Scorsese said: "His work is in the company of that of living contemporaries like Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa and Federico Fellini." There was another film Pyaasa (1957), that received international acclaim in the 1980s when it was first released in Europe, and subsequently became a big commercial success there, especially in France, Germany, and parts of South East Asia.
Oh, I don't mean to exclude Ray at all. Indian has a long respected history of some world-class filmmaking but the rest of the world only recently noticed that country's biggest, most ambitious spectacle releases are worthy of international attention--and are getting it. Definitely didn't mean to exclude cinema so esteemed (as of course it should be) by Kurosawa, Scorsese and other luminaries around the world.
Re-living in the era from when most of the current world population was not born, eh? What are the 50 world-renowned Indian movies in the past 30 years? Almost nothing to perhaps a handful. Living in the past means nothing. Almost all Indian movies are made for the Indian audience. Some bounce and become outliers or anomalies - case in point ... RRR.

@@Quaz7007 That's just looking at the way that the myth of the two minutes of silence has become a fact to many people and comparing to how that news channel similarly induces belief in its viewers. "It is said", "Some people say" and all the other language choices are deliberate and as we've seen in the past decades in the U.S., very effective. Fox News is a good example of how effective this approach can be and continues to be, shaping language to its own ends, where those receiving its messages "know" that those messages are true. It's like a real-time mythmaking instead of talking about historical myths like Sean's mention of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree. The bravery of the 36th Sikh Regiment is unimpeachable. Wanting that to have been appreciated at that time is understandable but there's no proof of it, another example of the sustained tragedy of colonial exploitation and dehumanization of the colonial subjects used in that effort.
