- Typical sweaty session video footage of me tracking a song called "Guilty But Insane" by Jacek Kieller, a fairly challenging song. I think I recorded it 8 times total on that particular session for an incredible artist named Jacek Kieller.
I usually just shout out which take felt best for later reference. I then listen back to my verbal comments after each take and choose the one that felt best to me in the moment.
I often see comments about me sweating and looking incredibly disheveled when I record and yes, I wish I could do it all without breaking a sweat...unfortunately I'm not there yet...
I always record full takes without any punches or edits to really capture a true performance with all the real energy, live-vibe and a real performance as if it was a live concert. It captures much more than just the played notes, it also captures that magical X-factor that comes from pacing yourself through a whole song performance and maintaining the right amount of energy, controlled dynamics, smooth flow and plenty of spontaneous ideas to keep things interesting. If you have time, check out the different takes and hear how I am trying to nail the tricky arrangement every time. I change things up on every take, trying different interpretations of the chart and experimenting with different transitions and fills on each take without losing momentum and always keeping the energy up and pushing to sound fresh and create surprises even though I keep ploughing through multiple takes of the same song, that is the hardest part of recording like this.
I always much rather learn and play a song 20 times before I record it, rather than editing bits and pieces together on the computer. As a musician I always prefer playing to editing. Make sure you check out Jacek Kieller's channel and his new album. The single "Guilty But Insane" is out now.
Also, I will be hosting a drum camp from January 17th-19th 2025 in Los Angeles.

TL never seem to runout of ideas! Just amazing.
An example how to work... Perfection at his best!!!
Love your playing, and the black pinstripes are awesome brings back the 80s

Take 4 ,,i;m diggin! Cheers!;-)!
THE KING !!!
He really is a brute of the drum set, savage. He's laughably good, just never gets into any difficulty.
I like when your drumming runs go from from lower to higher toms really smooth transition and hard to master
🇨🇱 Saludos desde Chile Thomas. A seguir inspirando, con tu gran nivel.👍🥁
What a pro! Beaut
Sounding awesome as always Thomas
unbeliveable feel
Thanks, Thomas. It's always nice to hear and see you play. Technically and musically, you're just a great player; if I were to estimate the hours you've played in all, I'd suspect 50,000 hours or more. In general, 10,000 hours are a mastery of studies. Yourself and the brother from down under and handfuls of other players across genres really make music really interesting as an art form.
4th version Is perfect ✌️💪
right on, each take was deadly, not sure how you decide.
Simply fantastic!
KILLER
Непревзойдённый стиль и техника! Восхищаюсь вами уже много лет Томас Лэнг!
Really interesting to hear your comments after each take)
Nice snare sound
🔥🔥🔥
great to see you laying down your groves ... australia ..
I also do the same for recording: never punches, always the full song from start to finish, for the exact same reasons. Well done ;)
THAT is the way!
Nice one!
King Thomas lang❤❤
❤❤❤❤💥🌹
All killer. No filler.
Killer!!!
🐐
Everyone that commends about sweating has no clue how difficould and exhausting drumming can be
and challenging aswell
Real deal my man!
Or a fucking clue how many lights it takes to make a decent RUclips video in the studio.
There is a study that compares drumming with professional soccer
@@audhen1 Really ? Some proofs please ?)
I seriously believe that memorization performance is faster and better than reading sheet music while performing.
AGREED!
Would’ve been great to have had some modulated beats in there but, there’s also the artist’s consideration to take into account
Take two was my favorite. Which take was used on the song? Of course all were great but I dug take two!
🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@ThomasLang00 , Can you shed some insight on the voicing choices in this song? I noticed no stacks or gong drum - just clean, traditional drum and cymbal sounds.
Is this an artist request, or that you felt the song didn’t need the trashy tones (or super low end of the gong drum)?
i also prefer playing to editing,of course to play like this would be quite a treat
Great stuff TL!!
Thank you! 🙏
The endurance! How could you choose ONE?!
Thanks! -and thankfully I don't have to choose, the artist has last word and can choose whichever take he likes the most. Here it was take 4 I believe.
Thomas, are the 3 toms over the bass drums 12, 13, & 14"? Short stacks?
Did you talk to Les Claypool yet?
Please join primus. 🙏
Overqualified
3 лучшая версия
think that every take was great but I liked the last one
That's the one that the artist chose as well!
I gotta ask. Do you play the song by feeling and improvise the grooves and the fills till you are happy, or do you play the song note for note and try to be as precise as possible?
