Jake had a vision. It was his, the only real one he'd ever had, and he clung to it. It had always been the blues. Even back in the Rock Island City orphanage (that sweaty kid factory) Jake and Elwood were saved by the music. Actually, saved by a gray-haired janitor everybody called Curtis. He wore sinister midnight shades, a narrow black tie and a porkpie hat that he kept pushed back on his head. Curtis wrapped his waxy brown hands around his guitar neck and played the most dangerous blues this side of Robert Johnson. The nuns scorched the brothers’ days with holy threats and Curtis rescued them by night. Down in the coolness of his basement he taught them the blues and set in motion their mission: to live the healing message of music.
Silent Elwood never did put more than two sentences together, but all those lost words burned from his Special 20 blues harp. And Joliet tore that voice from some hidden darkness, twisting his chubby body, snarling at the heavens, a born sinner. They used the basement because it was secret and because the echo gave them a nice dirty sound: Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walker, slapping like a bad dream around the chilly room. And then one night, Jake brought in a gleaming E string he said came from Elmore James’ guitar. He held it tight and as it glowed in the bulb light, Jake sliced Elwood’s middle finger and then his own. Now the solo boys with soul in their blood were brothers. Jake and Elwood Blues … the Blues Brothers.

This is the 1980 version of Cabs 1931 song.
He was 73 when he performed this in The Blues,Brothers movie.
He passed away in 1994.
Absolute legend of his time.
And a fantastic song too🤗
Ma'am what type of music do you normally play here?
Uh,we play both types....
Country,and Western 😄😆🤣😂😆🤣😁😄
Stand by your man had me in stitches and is still funny today.

Still one of the greatest slow blues out there. One of a kind.
...that might be because this is a jazz song. Not blues.

This movie was responsible for preserving so many classics by many legends and exposing them to a wider audience.
Man, Cab Calloway had style. He had class. A true entertainer through and through the likes of which we'll never see again, since he was from of an older, more respectful time period in which performers valued and cherished their audience. I'm not saying there aren't performers like that today, what I'm saying is that that era is dead and gone, sadly enough.
Rest In Peace Cab.
I beg to differ. The older, more respectful time period in which performers valued and cherished their audience will be brought back to life like never before, thanks to the Retro Decade Revival Project.
He was a living legend. I'm impressed he lived to 1994 considering he was born in 1907. Had lived a very full life no doubt.
My feelings exactly. Well said brother.
You make an excellent point about the egoic disdain fake artists that are extremely prevalent now have for their audience like they own them.
My FAVOURITE moment in the whole movie---love how it starts behind the curtain with Cab saying "You guys know 'Minnie the Moocher?'" then switches to in front, the curtains part and everyone's in white tails on a big band bandstand and TEARS into the song!!! Show 'em how it's done, Mr. C!!!
Blues brothers movie is a classic. Everytime it's on I get sucked in.
You are So Right this entire scene was just Exquisite. The talent, the ecstatic breathing and movements. Just Superb 😊😅🎉🎉❤
My dad passed away a few weeks ago and this was his signature karaoke track.
I will forever think of my dad when I hear this and will look for any opportunity to perform this to try and keep a bit of him alive.
That's beautiful, I love that for you ❤❤❤❤❤
It's been 44 years ago since this has been around. Thanks for the HADEEHADEEHI HODIHOUDIHOUDIHO!
This never gets old. always singing along.
Released March 1931...... 94 years later and we're still playing this song.
Well this is from 1980 Cab was 72 at the time but like i get it definitely a timeless song
How can you dislike that. This is such a great version. Unbelievable how much Energie Cab had, 50 years later.
Those are probably the cops and nazis from the movie 😂
what are you talking about i see no dislikes
@@voidwarden1413 RUclips removed the dislike count a year ago because people were using it for harassment, there are still dislikes on videos we just can’t see them

I did not live this period of time, but when I hear this song, I travel in time and live the moment, and I really enjoy the Blues band, I succeeded in that
When I was about 14 I heard Cab Calloway for the first time. He was singing a small part of this song in a Hula Hoops advert. I was immediately drawn to it and asked my Mum who he was. I loved it! Which was strange as I only listened to punk music at that time. When I saw the blues brothers with all the greats - John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles and Cab Calloway to name a few - I was spellbound. I watched a video recording of that movie so many times. I'm 54 now and still love this song. My friend occasionally plays this on his guitar and sings it, which is such a treat. When I discovered RUclips many years ago this was one of the first songs I looked for. I saw a really old film with Cab Calloway in a leading role. Was quite a novelty! Anyway I still love this song 40 years on from hearing it in a Hula Hoops advert! I still love punk as well. I am a bit of an oddball!
The roots of modern rap and jazz, sweet to hear and member
The Blues Brothers movie brought back some artists whom the younger generation didn't know and were introduced to through the Blues Brothers movie.
Yes just because it old does not mean it is not good. Music is better than driving a '66 New Yorker.
Because you can't bring back the the '66 New Yorker

Story of Minnie the moocher is still a better love story than Twilight
So true

Even tho he was cokey

She was the roughest, toughest frail
But Minnie had a heart as big as a whale

She loved him though he was cokey
He took her down to Chinatown
And he showed her how to kick the gong around
Hidee hidee hidee hi
Whoah
Hee dee hee dee hee dee hee
A hidee hidee hidee ho
She had a dream about the King of Sweden
He gave her things that she was needin'
He gave her a home built of gold and steel
A diamond car with platinum wheels

Hodee hodee hodee hodee hodee oh
Scurlivou scurlivou scurlivou rlivourlivu
Setetetete raburlutu scetete raburlutu toy
He gave her his townhouse and his racing horses
Each meal she ate was a dozen courses
She had a million dollars worth of nickels and dimes
She sat around and counted them all a million times
Hidee hidee hidee hi
Hooh whoaa oh oh whoa
Hidee hidee hidee hi
Poor Min, Poor Min, Poor Min
I really cant believe that Cab Calloway made this song before world war 2 and then layed it down without missing a beat in 1980. What a Legend.
Gotta say this is probably my favourite version.
I remember getting stuck at Midway airport in Chicago on my way to New Mexico a few years ago. Blizzard shut down all flights. Lucky for me i had my guitar as a carry on and there was a sax player that got stuck with me. We played this tune and had everyone in the airport singing along. Ended up with free drinks and a LOT of tips from the other passengers all night.
My god his voice is perfection ❤
That trumpet tone is just stellar!
Help me I can't get this song out of my head I'm getting tired of it but it feels so good at the same time.
Same here, there must be somethig special to it... Can't help humming the story bout Minnie The Moocher...
I like this version the most out of every other version I've heard. The only thing that would make it better is if we got the 2 minutes of the band solo from the movie too. So glad we have such a classic preserved.
My parents had the Blues Brothers movie on Beta. I grew up listening to this song. This is what made me appreciate the music that came before and what the current Gen at the time was inspired by. I even dig the original 1930 recording. I say check it out if you want a history lesson. Cab Calloway came out 45 years before I was born and I love and appreciate his contribution to American Music. Hopefully these Gen Z’s and beyond can appreciate it the way I did. Coming from a Gen Xer, 4th generation Mexican American
Strange that u didn't mention the Fleischer version
Had this on tape as a kid. It was my religion 👐
the blues brothers were the precursors in many things. for example they inspired freddy mercury to sing behind him in unison, the dance with the hat for mickael jackson as well as the thriller clip, a copy in the dance of the blues brothers in the streets of chicago, etc.
"Just follow my lead and act real cool."
Blue Harvest. Hahaha
I think this scene proved that Jake and Elwood really were on a mission from God!
That's history. Like all songs at Blues Brothers!

My family had a band called the blues blah brothers and my step dad sung this sung,I almost preferred his version over calloway..almost 😂the band also mixed in tracks from the commitments and a few sam cooke songs and some other blues tracks, from 93 to 2023 I watched the band as often as I could and grew up with them, they would draw huge crowd with their new years eve big night special ar our centre the pavilion that had a capacity of a couple of hundred, beautiful big old building now long gone,I miss those days, but that started my love of blues that still goes strong ❤❤❤
I had read somewhere that Cab Calloway wanted to do a disco version of this song for the film but he was told to do this version.
Apparently he felt a younger audience wouldn’t enjoy the original. Thank heavens for whoever talked him into sticking to this version. Amazing performance.
John Landis insisted that he do a jazzy version and thank f u c k for it
The brass intro is worth the price of admission alone.
Musicians like Cab Calloway are born once a century
Apart from their version of the Rawhide theme, the Peter Gunn theme and Twist It by Ray Charles, this is one of my favourite songs from the soundtrack.
A terrific version of his signature song.
