Tiff at his best. It's great to watch someone who just enjoys cars without letting ego or anything else get in the way.
Who chooses to use a 590hp turbo 6 to learn to drift in?
Needell.
Tiff Needell.
+Dave L and me lol
Crikey. If I was gunna learn I'd choose the smooth easy power delivery of a 350lb/ft V8 with around 350hp, but I am a mere mortal. I drove a 1jz with a big turbo that was said to be making around 450hp and it took me a little while just to learn to drive that smoothly, in a straight line, on the road.
+Dave L or a centrifugal supercharger
more power just makes it easier unless you're a total novice driver
+TRIGGERED Dude, it's the type of power. A NA or supercharged motor with 600hp will feed the power on in a relatively smooth fashion but a turbo will be quite tame until it get gets to a certain number of revs then EXPLODE with power. This makes the turbo 600hp much more difficult to master than the NA or the supercharged 600hp. But I would completely understand you not knowing the difference if you are a novice driver or indeed a novice to Motorsport and cars in general.
2:20 reverse entry in under 2 minutes. the man's a fackin genius.
Tiff is a talented racer and could probably handle a power slide blindfolded. The fact that he had such difficulty just shows how different drifting is from high performance driving. I personally don't care for drifting purely for show. A little oversteer while maintaining the primary objective of going around the corner quickly is far more appealing to me (e.g. WRC, Australian V8 Supercars).
They do drift racing as well.
In this case, Tiff's background is actually hindering him. He holds on to the steering wheel WAY too much which is why he's losing the car on corner entry. As someone who also has a primarily circuit racing background, it's almost impossible to resist the temptation of clutching the steering wheel. But, as they pointed out in the episode where they taught Johnny how to drift, letting go of the steering wheel is pretty much a prerequisite in competitive drifting (since the steering racks are so slow).
Where do they do drift race exactly?
@Vulcan Gamer they aren't racing though you actually lose points for overtaking the lead driver
@Vulcan Gamer it literally doesn't when they're tandeming the aim is to imitate what your opponent does unless they spin out or go way off line
Our boy DMAC in the original 86 there! To be honest Tiff was thrown in at the deep end with a car with such power and being made to pull off drifts and not learning in a lower power car and starting small.
He's a great driver that was fun to watch. Pretty sure he clutch kicked with the e brake still on on that last attempt, which I'm sure played a part in breaking the drive shaft
Tiff has very good car control :)
To learn in such a powered car is too difficult
+Frederico Schmitz AE86 "Hachi-Roku" would be my choice...
@Mulholland Magazine well he's not doing regular driving here bud
@Mulholland Magazine I have no idea wtf you are saying. All im saying is he cant drift for shit just because he's done some racing. Racing and drifting are very different
@Mulholland Magazine definatly is exept in drifting and rally letting tires slide in any other motorsport is a big nono could you imagine spending 20 years focusing on not letting a car slide and now being asked to do it with confidence
what a legend!
3:20 Tututututututuuu!!!
ouuuu myyyy gooood...that turbo sound *-*
It's fun seeing people learn to drift
You gotta love tiff he is such a good driver
dat blow off valve tho
wolfie239w Roses are red, Violets are blue. My 2JZ goes ZUTUTUTUTU
wolfie239w its a lack of BOV. when the throttle snaps shut the compressed air from the intercooler is forced back to the turbo fins and makes that sexy noise. shorter the intake pipe on the turbo is the louder the noise is.
***** That sounds suspiciously like Hectic Habib's VL Turbo poem... LOL!
***** That sounds suspiciously like Hectic Habib's VL Turbo poem... LOL!
"I can drift , I can drift" - haha - that will totally be the excitement I'm going to experience when it 'clicks' (Y)
It wasn't the clutch kick it was pulling the handbrake without having the clutch in that broke the shaft. Love to see him do the same now.
i had sc400 twin turbo with supra 6mt and it love to dance and corner
Threw a reverse (2:19) on the first go...well that's Tiff Needell for you
That car is such a salvage, such a monster
This would be such a great experience.
He is the best.
That turbo flutter :o
Nice clip. Drifting might not be the quickest way around a course, but it could very well be the most fun.
That turbo.. *SHOOO-too-too-too!*
Love fifth gear just wish it was on a real channel that I had access too :(
I never thought I would see this man struggle to drift
Good job Tiff, I would have been really nervous especially with a car that powerful.
I wonder if Clarkson would have gotten into the mess he's in if Tiff was still on Top Gear..
If Tiff was presenting TG along side with Clarkson it would be completely different from what we have now... Opps, used to have then T.T Tiff is mostly likely to win most of the arguments as he is a much better driver than Jeeza and the role of the Stig would be unnecessary.
WY Lau It used to be quite similar when Tiff used to be on TopGear, but yeah, maybe the Stig wouldn't be required. Tiff could easily have been the Stig all this time anyway.
***** He has also appeared on Top Gear a couple of times as the "Back-up Stig"
***** Thats cauz Tiff is a good friend of Clarkson.
MrCrashandFootball He is. And also VBH.
Tiff and Chris Should do Top Gear
Good work Tiff!
Davide P ooopopopopopopoppopopooopopioooooo
That sound when he changes gear
Tiff, you're still young... You will learn eventually... :D
No Skandinavian Flicks. What is he doing at 5:20?
what would happen if he was over whelmed and forgot to press the clutch before yanking the hand brake??
+Mike Deme stall the engine or not locking the rear tires
+Mike Deme and probs blow the driveshaft... heavy clutch over 500hp and cluch kick on a hydro handbrake? yeah tiffs fault 100% watch the run again, he clutch kicks it with the handbrake fully up... novice mistake
+Mike Deme then its hello wall.
Weve all done silly stuff while drifting, shit happens
dam that blowoff valve though
+lanianddomo apparently that is no blow off valve and air being returned to the turbo instead of exiting via blow off valve
+wiredsk8r Turbo flutter :D
i kinda wanna see what Tiff would do with the current spec machines outputting quad digits
he clutch kicked with the handbrake still on
I am hardly the only one to notice the reason he broke the drive shaft wasn't because of one kick to many, it is because he kicked the clutch with what I would guess is a hydraulic handbreak up. Now I am not slating Tiff at all, he is the best TV driver out there and his skills are proven, I just think, well, that I am total nerd!
They should have let him have an F-Type or 458 or really, whatever the hell he wanted.
I've been a fan of Tiff's for about fifteen years now, the man knows how to get sideways
8:05 is beautiful
i don't think drifting is even close to rallying or track racing in terms of skill... Ps , Needel is a legend!!
Agreed. I even think that drift cars are tuned in a foolish way... for example, like in this video, adding a turbo from a truck will give a lot of turbo lag, a lot of heat (less power) and will only make the car much harder to drift and drive.
I don't understand why everything must be so exaggerated in drift cars. Why adding a normal turbo and tune the suspensions to make the car oversteer a lot can't do the job? It's an easy job to set the car like that.
Drift cars arent setup up to oversteer, theyre more like drag cars with lots of steering lock. More rear grip = more speed, smoke and angle. but to overcome the extra grip you need lots of power.
TheOriginalPierat Ok, but then why not just reducing the grip at the back instead of doing weird things like adding the turbo from a truck?
+Snarl616 Because that will massively affect your score. reducing rear grip will make you slower, have less control at high angles and reduce smoke produced when sliding.
Grassroots drifting is completely different to comp stuff. most comp cars now run upwards of 800 bhp and wide semislicks at 10-20psi with steering lock in excess of 70 degrees.
My dad now owns this soarer that was used in this
noone gives a shit
I feel that jermey clarkson is also a good driver i dont know why but i like how tiff and jermey drive
no comparison. clarkson is just a fucking retard
6:03 hhahahaaaah
Good drift tiff
Is no one going to comment about how great that 2JZ sounds?
sound similar to an old bus
6:35 For those dorky D1 nerds, they're playing the D1 Theme Song!!!! (Need For Speed, by 8-ball)
GG Tiff.
You brokedeeded it.
9.41 I think he let go of the clutch while still on the handbrake. Simple mistake with big consequences but that's motorsports for you. He did have a right good go at it though so fair play
First time drifting lessons - 4th gear drift on 600hp laggy car all right next to a wall. That must have been crazy
Impressive! Would love to see how he'd do with a working car
this must be at least 10 years old ? I remember some of them cars ! embarrassing days haha. it's got slightly better now
+Daniel Wenham It cant be far off ! Julian looks like a sprightly young fellow :)
+John Smith You remember ten years ago?!
+g0dbel0w yes
Filmed with a nokia 3210, at the turn of the century, converted from 3GPP to FLV and then back again, lastly compressed by youtoob whithin an inch of it's life.
Like watching tv through the bottom of a coke bottle.
Takumi, is that you? ))))
Tiff does an amazing impression of Itsuki in this video.
***** It is, and it just shows how different a driving skill it is. I grew up driving rear wheel drive cars, MKI, MKII Escorts and then Cossie's, also had a few years rallying and I can Scandinavian flick a car with my eyes closed (including front wheel drive cars using left foot braking) and I'm comfortable using a handbrake, but I'd describe my drifting skills average at best. It's a completely different kettle of fish. Make no bones about it, Tiff is a phenomenal driver, so I think given time and practice he'd master it. He's also a thoroughly decent bloke.
"One clutch kick too many and the drive shaft is broken"
And that's why you can't find a reasonable AE86 anymore. Drifting ruins cars
why would you want it anyway its old hateful rusty toyota
Supercars and racecars are 2 different things
Pretty sure he broke a shaft because he wasn't using the clutch with the hand brake?
So do you have to ...
Clutch, handbrake, turn, letoff handbrake then accelerate? Im 14
+12,420,666 views something like that, on rwd car only what you can do when not using clutch with handbrake is you can break car
pulling the hand-brake without the clutch won't do shit to a typical rwd drive-train
It's just one of those sports where you break a lot of gear!
Its good to see someone struggling to keep at it.
I want to see this with 4WD cars!
Drifting with 4wd is highly looked down upon, not a good idea
Look up Flemming Alm and Kenneth Alm
where have you been living?! ever heard of ken block?
@@mwmmatt1 'looked down upon'? fuck off haha by who? these retards?
@@James28R honestly I'm surprised I left that comment, I don't agree with it at all now haha
Hahahaha :-) It's great to see him out of his element. When you're trained that sideways is slow every instinct want you to correct it. Great job though!!! Being that he is getting old at 64 his reflexes aren't what they were back in the late 70's early 80's. (Sorry Tiff) They should have put him in something longer and naturally aspirated like Mcquarrie's Camaro or Hubinette's Viper. Much easier and slower transitions to control. I bet then he would have gotten it.
DJ Dragon Torque equals tyre spin, tyre spin equals car spin.
Plus the more limited rev ranges of big V8s and V10s gives you less to play with. Having a long, distinctive sounding rev range is useful when you can't look at the tach!
Besides, simple smashing it with 8.4 litres of truck engine is just brute powersliding, not actual drifting.
I heard the turbo fluttering
whats the difference between Scandinavian flick and a drift?
alxuria its simple
Scandinaviam drift - turn left/rght before left/right , call it Inertia Drift
Drift - keep the car sideways long as possible
does it look like that's rally driving to you?
Maybe try an awd, I hear it's easier.
Arent wings used to create more downforce to give more grip? in other words to counter oversteer? In other words why in the fuck do drift cars need those massive rear spoilers?
Actually, pro drift cars are built to be as high traction as possible. Aerodynamics, low tire pressures, and suspension settings for drift cars are set to allow the car to keep a forward bite as the tires spin to allow for acceleration in drift. Without that grip the car would slow down very quickly in mid drift.
ray britton Correct, if you watch some jibber jabber from the judges stand around 2002-2004 you can clearly hear Orido and Tsuchiya agreeing the wing doesn't actually help drifting but it looks cool as fuck. It's hard to pin point the DVD round from D1GP but it's probably on youtube somewhere.
HenryMania Thank you sir. Don't care what the others were saying. It definitely doesn't help a 'slip' event. Wings aid 'grip' events.
***** I strongly but respectfully disagree. Rear wings provide downforce usually at high speeds usually, obviously it also depends on the angle of the wing so if it's steeply raked it would give more downforce at low speeds but compromise top end and vice versa. anyone who knows anything about drifting knows that it's not about high speeds mopre drift angles and tire smoke, in most cases even though the cars are fast as fuck with usually an insanely ridiculous power to weight ratio.. they actually don't go that fast in competitions. which would mean that the wings wouldn't serve much of a purpose exept for aesthetics
lmao tiffany needell
That's a Toyota in Japan, but a Lexus in America
Top Gear brought me here... #bringbackclarkson *sigh*
Good
Everyone knows the IRISH are the best drifters that we’re ever born 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Agreed, legendary drink drivers...
it sounds like
s like a 2jzgte modified in that drifting car
Did you broke the gear boxes, MAM this is bad.
tokyo drift in real life
I build own drift car and make people stop picking on me show how it's done in streets
Wall tap
Классно
Stututu
Only can Tiff break a Toyota.
fährste quer, siehste mehr !!!
i cant believe that Tiff cant drift that car...these cars look the same but they behave differently...every car is set for the owner likings and maybe this is why Tiff has hard time to make it work.
Im 100% sure tiff would have done better in a m3 to learn to drift
those chrome wheels are horrible
So true
+Oblio1942 It's a drift car not a Ferrari
Totally Winning Pro Gamer implying drift cars arent supposed to look good
Oblio1942 No they mostly aren't. They're suppose to function well.
Totally Winning Pro Gamer youre thinking of drift missiles
High power hides bad driving
The
in fact Tiff gave too much on the throttle....
Is funny how's this westerns just get off drugs and want to be rappers or drifters, be real
drifting. what a pointless motor sport
Toyota AE-86 is a great drift learner's car. R33 GT-Rs are the best-of-the-best drifting machines for well....... drifting.
Toyota Soarer with a Turbo V8 really?
That's too much power and unbalanced handling and Turbo is too laggy.
R33 GT-Rs are slightly better with less Turbo lag.
Nissan Silvias are good budget drift machines (not the best but still good).
Hands down one of the dumbest sports ever. Invented by tire companies obviously.
What?
hahaha
Proper built drift cars are pain in the ass to master , they are too stiff and has tons of unpredictable handling but im sure Tiff will master it in a few days
