I would have to imagine that this system (or something like it) is almost certainly the way it works with the F-35, with how the Air Force likes to keep things similar across platforms. Only difference being the targeting pod is replaced with the digital aperture system under the nose of the F-35.
No doubt, and it probably has some extra tricks too! Now, if only ED's 'brain melting module' is the F-35 haha
@@D00kerT The F-35 helmet is a quite a bit more advanced, mainly because it can take advantage of all the ridiculously powerful sensors the f-35 has. It's also made from a joint venture between rockwell collins and Elbit systems, rather than thales like the Scorpion. It also has built in night vision.
I imagine the real differences are how it integrates into the f-35, since the f-35 doesn't have a HUD, and just has "one" large touchscreen (allegedly its two big panels that look like one), and a lot more HOTAS controls than most planes
SailHatan certainly, I just mean similar ergonomics as far as similar or like minded Hotas implementation and more specifically, symbology.
I was mindblown when i saw 3:00
Red kite, you have seriously been an amazing content creator for years. Every video you make is a serious piece of quality tutorial content. Thank you
Glad you like them!
Agreed and more detailed than the Ed Senior producer. One thinks that if someone else was at the helm things might be different
True!!!
@@RedKiteRender we really like your content RK! 😀
Great work RedKite, great work indeed. As a former RAAF GCI, I could only dream of SA like this; instead, I learned how to control legacy Hornet's (mostyl 2v2 engagements leading up to full exercise Large Force Engagements) on the venerable UPA-62C scope, then upgraded to a Windows-NT based system, a huge improvement. If the Hornet drivers back then had these HMS systems, I'd have been out of a job ;).
Mate, I've not donated to Patreon before, but if it helps to keep you pushing out your incredible tutorials, I'm headed there now. Bravo :)
That sounds like great (serious) fun ignoring the realities of combat!
Thank you kindly for supporting! RUclips's been progressively making it more difficult for small channels, esp if you're not making daily videos.
@@RedKiteRender Yes, and Yes ;) Hey quick question, I noticed little chevrons below other aircraft in your vids, is that a mod?
@@nickatgmail No mod, just minimal labels: Options - Gameplay - Labels ' DOT ONLY'
@@RedKiteRender Too easy, no more paragraph labels for me :)
Quantum jump in SA for the A-10C!. Exquisitely detailed master class that shows us every trick the Scorpion sight has to offer so far. Thank you Mr Kite.
Very nice tutorial! High quality as usual.
Fast and comprehensive, well done, mr Kite!
Best HMCS-tutorial I have seen so far. Thank you very much!
Absolute class. Well done, as always. Thanks!
Quite new to DcS. Started with the FA18 and have pretty much got that sorted now. But started with this plane a week ago, and the more I’m learning the more I’m loving this plane.
By far the clearer and the most organised tutorial! Thanks
Amazing video , perfectly made , environment setup , weather , the way u explain , simplicity , everything perfect 😇👍🏻👌
Outstanding work! Calm and straightforward presentation, and directly applicable. For some reason no overly dramatic production, even! Cheers man :)
I would need to do this for a living to understand how to fly the A10C, it has so many systems and WOW my minds blown. Great video.
Thank you for getting to the point immediately without intros and other small talk 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Detailed, logical flow, not delivered in any kind of over the top obnoxious manner. Thank you for the excellent tutorial!
Nice tutorial Red Kite, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bignewy!
Why even bother watching a tutorial if it's not from RedKite?
110% agreed.
Some people just love to waste their time with GR's tutorials.

Gonna need a senzu for that burn
Loved this new video, thanks RedKite ! I learned a lot !
Absolutely amazing video, as always - thanks.
My pleasure!
Still the best DCS tutorials. Good job, Mr. Kite
Wow. Just wow. An excellent piece of work.
I still have been trying to get a camera view like this in the cockpit and have had no luck! Tutorial is great! I’ve learned a lot about DCS planes watching these videos. Thank you!
Whenever I need to learn something I first go through your channel. Thanks for making tutorials that get to the point, but with enough information to know what to do. Keep it up!
Thanks! Just wish i had more hours in the day! these videos take a while.
@@RedKiteRender I really like the quality over quantity style! Most tutorials I need to watch at least 2 times. Yours I need to watch once and know what to do. Thank you for making these, they help a lot of people!
Nice. Best tutorial so far on youtube :) Going to have to watch this several times. this is very complicated :(
Excellent video RedKite
I can't get over how good the helmet and FM changes are. And the APKWS is incredible for dealing with smaller AAA and SAM threats.
I'm looking forward to doing some airborne forward air control with this level of situational awareness it'll be easy!
@@RedKiteRender No kidding. Too bad they don't have smoke warheads for the APKWS, since you could smoke the specific corner of a house you wanted hit with that accuracy.
Would be pretty handy! but i can't say i've ever struggled aiming with the WP rocket pods in the past. Always got SADL and the laser too.
@@RedKiteRender Yeah, that's fair! I definitely need to try online again. The last time I tried, my computer couldn't handle anyone else being on screen before it started chugging. Now I can actually managed to fly with great frame rates. The A-10C seems like the perfect time to try.
I don't even have the A-10C II but your work is outstanding as always! Keep it up!
Clear and informative tutorial, very good!
Best video presentation / tuto ever on DCS =) thx for work guy !
Fantastic video, as always!
After using the HMCS for eight months and feeling pretty smug about the increased SA I'm gettting this video has shown me how much I'm missing! Gawd, time to take some notes!
This is simply superb, thanks a lot!
Top Shelf Intel, as usual!
Super useful, concise and well described as always. ED should pay you :)
Very nice tutorial tutorial sir, thanks! 👍
This really is well done. Thanks!!
As aways great tutotial. Thank you.
Great vid!
Thank you for upload! it is very informative :D
This is awesome content! Now if only one could generate a training mission for the HMD.
Great video, I learned alot from it.
Thanks a lot for this expository video. The HCMS while a very powerful and welcome feature, getting to know the symbols and hotas commands is a lot to take in at this early stage. You did a great job introducing the system in this tutorial. Did not quite get the mode you used to get the targeting pod superimposed image to become clearer on the HCMS [ At 5.06].
I am having a good time with the HCMS in VR. Brilliant gadget I must say.
Boat switch aft to select the IR camera on the targeting pod.
@@RedKiteRender Roger. Once again thanks
We need to track the one person who disliked THE ONLY GOOD TUTORIAL ON THIS INSANELY COMPLICATED A10 CONTRAPTION!
ED should hire you to make official tutorials
Geez! I need to take notes!
I havent had the tgp sliding bug in VR when quick slaving it to hmcs line of sight. Great video as always RedKite. Thanks
I hadn't until last night. Only seems to happen after you set a SPI, hook it and then TMS right long elsewhere for me.
It's related to the rate at which you're turning your head when you slave, so in VR it'l be less likely to happen than Trackir
RedKite makes sense. The system is so powerful that I often underuse this ability anyway. I tend to slew from the hmcs cross and then fine tune with tgp.
Impressive. Unmatched SA
Great video! Love the new A-10C II features. MP servers looking like the early days.
I think the new toys have really earned the hog back a place amongst all the high performance multi-roles we've got in DCS now!
@@RedKiteRender Yes it has.
Good stuff!
Great Vid Cheers.
This is the good stuff
Great Content! I would love to know if there is any good data about the Datalink participation for the friendly non-net aircraft and the ground units. I've read the new manual but not much in the way of talking about the EPLRS and PPLI that looks to being used here. Great stuff.
Flying the Tank killer is more like playing piano with all those button sequences :D
UM abraço aqui do Brasil, nunca deixe as legendas desativada por favor, muito bom o vídeo!!!
Thanks alot!
ZOMG more A10c tutorials please:)
Thank you a lot for the great video ....however you missed something important about slaving the TGP to the HMCS cursor....the thing is ..: if you go to the Status page and select the HMCS menu ...at the right vertical you should see an option called "INR" if you toggle that it will switch to POINT AREA or INR ....so if you choose AREA for example as you slave the tgp to the HMCS the TGP will be ground stabilized (AREA stabilized) also the same for Point track....I guess if you choose the Point or Area track in targeting pod before slaving it....it shall do the same.... thanks a lot man ( I would like to share you a video footage if you like)
I don't believe I did. During the programming I mentioned it, but I'd been unable to see a difference. The issue is the LOS slave mode inherits the momentum of the player's head, this is a bug.
The update that makes the A-10 SA like Ace combat
@RedKite - i love you ;-)
As usual, an excellent, comprehensive, and very clear tutorial from @RedKite - thank you. Just to check: at 6'58'' it should be China hat forward long, not aft - right?
China hat aft long now slaves all systems to the spi, I think forward still works, but the logic of the China hat has been changed with the II upgrade! (for example slaving to a waypoint now consists of TMS down long (spi to waypoint) and then China hat aft long, sensors to SPI)
@@RedKiteRender RTFM for me :-) ...thanks for the rapid reply.
To slave the tgp to a spi on the hcms, has this been changed to china hat forward long in an update? China hat aft doesnt seem to work for me. Cheers.
Any explanation of the what appears to be extra bearing/range when hooking a known friendly aircraft? It displays below aircraft type as XXX/XXX
I can't figure out what its referring to.
That is the hook's bullseye
So how do you get other aircraft in the mission editor to use datelink. And how can we have them do spi on ground targets?
Any unit with EPLRS in it's tasking should appear. Ai aircraft automatically set their spi broadcast when attacking targets.
Which do you prefer as a CAS aircraft in DCS? The Harrier or the A10?
You should also do a tutorial demonstrating tje ability of making your own networl sending messages (and maybe image meesages if they decide to implement it) and sending tasks to flight members (currently only to follow a10 but maybe they'll modell automatic target hand off system in f16 too and hopefully not like the harrer)
SADL is something I've wanted to do for a while on and off, just little difficult to record since it requires multiple players ideally. will have to see
@@RedKiteRender its definitely worth it. Hoggit is encouraging people just to watch vids and not the manual and so no one fucking knows about this shit so everyone is just wanking the stick in mp instead of doing fac
@@Obi1-KenBone-Me Back in like 2012 (?) someone made a group buy for a custom print run of the DCS manual, still have that book on my shelf. Amazing investment. If people don't want to read the material that's out there that's their fault really.
Not everyone enjoys reading manuals, myself I'm dyslexic so it's a pain. Personally I think professionally made videos are better than the manual in many situations as you can show and demonstrate in action what still pictures cannot. But most certainly you should be referencing the manual in addition to videos.
There's a real risk of people learning off of quick fix videos that don't approach the subject correctly and teach bad habits or leave critical information off the table leading to confusion when you leave that narrow solution without an appreciation of the systems below it. Of course some people just want DCS to be ace combat, so they learn the minimum and ignore potential for deeper understanding and the finer points of multiplayer co-operation, that's just how it'll always be in public multiplayer.
I will never understand why the ED Senior Producer cannot produce the same or equivalent level of introductory information when he releases his videos. Something wrong there. Well done and explained logically with the current limitations at hand.
Sorry, I did not understand which mode did you mention at 5:08 to be easier to use it? THX
Missed that also, would like to know if possible.
How do i buddy lase. I played with ym friend and i could see this blue dotted line locating to where he SPI in my HMCS. Im not sure how to do this again
4:36 - TMS Left Long to broadcast SPI to team
I can't find what the assigned name for the main power switch is, would like to have it on my Hotas.
I don't know either, but you'll only ever need it during start up, so I've not found a need for it.
RK, I'm using TIR and have difficulty getting the HMCS display overlay to move fully left or right as I turn my head 90 degrees right/left. Any idea how to cure that? As usual, another great video!
I'm not sure I follow what you're asking, could you explain in more detail?
RedKite If I turn my Track IR head and look down the 3/9 line, my HMCS center point is at the 2/10 line and not matching the Track IR viewpoint. I’m not getting full range of motion with the HMCS.
Huh, that's very odd. Do you use a custom monitor.lua or ultra wide screen resolutions? It sounds like a bug DCS has a history of issues with ultrawide and customised monitor lua setups.
@@RedKiteRender No custom lua but I am running 3840x2160 4K on a 55" UHD. I guess I can step down the resolution and experiment but that sort of defeats the purpose of 4K.
@RedKite is it possible to use the HMCS for air to air HMD for AIM-9s ? like F/A-18, F-16 and Su-27 ?
No not at present. I couldn't say if this is something the real helmet can do, or if dcs will add it later either.
@@RedKiteRender thanks a lot o:-)
How do you snap your zoom in and zoom back out? For some reason, my cockpit view defaults to being zoomed in like this, and it is super annoying! Not sure how to get back to normal view.
My zoom is bound to an axis which is what I generally use. Slash and asterisk on the number pad will also zoom you in or out. I'd suggest binding either Zoom slow or a zoom axis on your hotas.
Do you guys have eye strain when using this?
I have a T.flight hotas,
Enough buttons for the a10?
Practically I'd say no. Functionally you can, I know of a few who fly with something similar and use the keyboard too. Unfortunately the Warthog has probably the most complex HOTAS system in dcs. You'll need to use modifiers and the keyboard to do anything more than absolute basics.
Will the red triangle show in the HMCS when interacting with JTAC?
Shoot, I forgot about that! hah I scarlessly use the JTACs, Yes, it does show up, might do a video on the Jtac later.
@@RedKiteRender Nice that is going to make the A10 insanely good at CAS.
Do you have to be looking away for it to work I cannot get mine to work
Obviously late response, but on the default profile the HMCS stuff disappears when you're looking forward at the HUD. So yeah, in order to see all the HMCS stuff you have to look away from the HUD unless you tweak the profile (fwiw, I haven't tried that yet).
If you're asking that question, I'm guessing you probably don't have TrackIR or other head/eye-tracking? I know some people can make it work without that, and some are quite good at manually looking around w/ keys or other controls, but I've found it's not enjoyable for me without my TrackIR. Too many other things going on (esp. in the A10) to think about "slewing" your own POV w/ yet more controls. Moving your head around is much more intuitive, immersive, and precise.
Also, make sure you're in the A-10C II and not the older A-10 that has no HMCS. I've made that mistake, once. :)
@8:57 I'm confused. The SPI is not on the target, it is significantly below it, yet it seems you used a laser rocket to hit that target. How did the manpad, whatever it was, get designated? Did the system recognize it as a threat?
Spi was roughly on target, just when the hud went over it, it was occluded. I then visually fine tuned the TGP diamond onto target.
@@RedKiteRender very tough to catch! @9:06 is the last reference I can see of it but it is off-target, then it disappears in the rocket reticle ring and seems to be back on target. Got it though.
what happened to China hat aft long command which supposed to slave tgp to the steerpoint. Its not workin anymore ?
Slaves to the SPI now, TMS down long will reset the SPI to your selected Steerpoint. So in effect, TMS down long, China had aft long to get back to a steerpoint.
@@RedKiteRender thanks for fast response.yea i noticed that but not sure if it is a bug or not.
Intended behaviour change, China hat aft short toggles LSS now rather than boresight. Some controls changed to facilitate the HMCS, but also I believe there were a few inaccuracies in the original warthog and changes over the years to the real thing too.
I'm trying my best to get the hmd soi but it doesn't want to
see the pinned comment
how do you use all this in vr is it possable sir
Yes, totally possible, use is just the same. In the sim options however, you can choose to show it on just your right eye (realistic) left eye, or both if you prefer.
Imagine an A-A fighter like F18 or F16 with the helmet that shows datalink for detected enemy aircraft as well... It would be literally like flying with labels on...
Yep, modern aircraft like the F-35 have just that and more!
Very nice tutorial as always, For me it's the most frustating module of DCS. I still can't understand why it requires so much operations to aquire a target, and the use of long press to critical functions is just a non sense.. for example when you want to use TGP to aim maverick..
- Make TGP SOI : Coolie hat left/right LONG!
- Make current SOI SPI > TMS fwd LONG!
- Slave all to SPI > china hat fwd LONG!
...OK forget about it target is behind me... I don't even speak about case where your TGP lost your SPI because of INS desync, or about "point" mode not available since you're not in front of your target. I know it requires a lot of training but it could have been simplier I guess. Guys who invented that should meet UX designer ^^
Requires more testing, but afaik hostile aircraft if seen by AWACS will be displayed, but as a green wedding cake shared SPI symbol.
I noticed that It seems AI Hornets/Vipers will set their spi and broadcast it on the targets they're attacking. I don't believe this is correct.
@@RedKiteRender I recently watched this video: ruclips.net/video/EXgTrpPU9Rk/видео.html 38:00
the pilot explains that with his HMCS he can see a line from a Viper to what it's radar is locking. So I believe that this is correct to some extent. We'll see how this tech in DCS get implemented.
Also, one of the options for the Display settings of the DCS A10C II HMCS is to show hostile aircraft. I do hope they can flush it out quickly.
Yes, but, i don't think they put a spi a-10c style onto their airborne targets, it's just re-using the a-10c ground attack logic. Player DCS: F-16s already draw lines to their locked target within their own datalink f16-f16 on the hsd. It's just we're waiting for ED to fully model Link-16 and the various aircraft.
This is literally like playing Ace Combat.
Switch on unlimited ammo, and you're pretty much there just with some extra complexity. Crazy to think they've got this, and more modern gear in real life.
Meanwhile qeshm getting obliterated
Is that Persian Gulf oder Syria?
PG
Wingman 1 broadcasts his SPI which is jumping all over the place all the time.
Flight Lead: What the hell are you doing?!???
Wingman 1: Oops... guess I played too much FIFA recently.
Dammit, my brain explodes on 'or select it with a HUD when steerpoint not set to markpoints, then we can set it as our SPI'. :(
Are you familiar with the waypoints/markpoints system? This tutorial was more geared towards conversion from the old A-10C to the new A-10c rather than a total beginner to the module.
I'd recommend learning up on the core systems (SOI, SPI, TAD, HUD, Waypoints/markpoints) on the aircraft before approaching the helmet.
@@RedKiteRender thanks for your reply, I really enjoy your tutorials! Yes, I have quite a few hours in both A-10C and A-10C II now, but still it's not that easy to catch everything you say! No offense here, it's just difficult to put together even though I'm using marks and other things in A-10. Thanks again for great vids on all modules, you're my first source of information on any question!
@@yurikirsanov8763 No worries, it's a complex topic to talk about, and having flown the a-10c since 2011? I get a little complacent on what I'm saying as it's simple to my mind's experience. If you need anything expanded on feel free to ask.
@@RedKiteRender I'm flying it right now but after switching back from F-18, so it's kinda not too easy to put all terms back together :)
Wow. DCS now looks like Ace Combat or Hawx. I'm not complaining, it's pretty cool to know that technology exists and is used
Ground forces with data link. JESUS PLEASE. CAS no longer goving me hives
All that yet they broke FC3 REFUELING at won Airfields on Servers.
Grow up.
where is the dictionary of terms. . . meaningless jargon for newbies where are the base line tutorials.
The training missions for the A10 in DCS will get you familiar with all of the terminology. It's a lot -- the learning curve is steep! I had to replay the training missions several times to take it all in. It's not one of those games (or planes) you can just hop right in and be blowing stuff up 10 minutes later. It take a serious time commitment to get proficient, something I struggle with having two young kids and a business. I'm thinking this knowledge will transfer over to other jets in DCS, so you won't have to relearn the jargon all over with every new plane... at least I hope! :)
Too complex. They seriously should use the RUSSIAN HDR Design. Jesus!
I can't watch this. The guy narrating is too animated and impatient when he tries to explain everything. I need a tutorial with a calm, relaxed voice, not this loud belching seraph here.
