In the 1800s, a color called *emerald green was very popular. People used it everywhere, from clothes to book covers. But emerald green had a harmful chemical called **arsenic in it.
In 2019, Melissa Tedone and her team studied old green books from the 19th century. They found out that these books had arsenic in them. So Melissa started a project to find more of these books around the world. Her team made over 900 bookmarks with pictures of the green book covers and safety tips. These bookmarks were sent throughout the U.S. and to 18 other countries. As a result, books with arsenic were found in other places too.
The books aren’t too dangerous, but touching them often could be bad. Melissa says, “You don’t have to throw away these books. Just be careful and be aware of the danger.”
