- At Broadway Backwards 2022, J. Harrison Ghee sashayed to Z Infante’s rescue as their fabulous Fairy Godperson in a reimagining of “Impossible” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Infante’s deliciously scornful stepmother was played by Janelle Farias Sando, who slights and insults them saying, “You will always be who you were born to be.” During their empowering, groove-heavy duet of “Impossible,” Ghee assures Infante that living as their authentic self is more than possible.
Broadway Backwards, the annual Broadway extravaganza celebrating the LGBTQ+ community through the great songs of musical theater, returns to Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre on Monday, March 13, 2023. The beloved evening and its star-studded cast will embrace love and self-expression in true Broadway fashion.

Broadway luminaries and cheerful audience members united in full and jubilant force May 23, 2022, lending their light to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives, culture and contributions with the in-person return of Broadway Backwards.
Broadway Backwards creator Robert Bartley wrote and directed this year’s return to the stage alongside associate director Adam Roberts. Bartley and Roberts joined James Kinney and Joshua Buscher-West in choreographing the show. Mary-Mitchell Campbell served as music supervisor; Ted Arthur was music director with Nicholas Connors and Nick Wilders as associate music directors.
The 16th edition of the show, which had not been performed live since 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic, raised a record-breaking $758,582 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City.
Jenn Colella returned as host, leading a cast of 86 performers and a 13-piece orchestra that enchanted a standing-room-only audience at Disney’s New Amsterdam Theatre with LGBTQ+ affirming numbers.

Okay, but we applied for the rights and were all set to do an all queer production of R+H Cinderella in 2020, got as far as casting, read throughs, and design meetings. Then when Concord theatricals got word they shut us down because they didn't want a trans Cinderella and she "couldn't sing it in the same key as they score" and that somehow broke the agreement.
I'm glad we have this at least. Hopefully there comes a day we can have our all-queer production of Cinderella. And it's as body diverse and nuerodiverse as our production almost was.
Let this precedent be engraved in stone, it sounds as if Concord theatricals was excusing itself in "the tone of the score" so as not to sound conservative. This is more common than it seems and we should all have our eyes wide open when these cases happen because then they are the same companies that presume to be inclusive and liberal when that request comes from someone with more influence and commercial views. So convenient for your interests.
Even if it was just about the trans actress singing the score and as brutal as it would’ve been why couldn’t they simply suggest switching the actress out. There are trans actresses that could’ve sung it in that key.
@@dignature123 no, stop making excuses for transphobia.
@@DannyBeckerFilms Fair.
I just directed the show with a trans Topher so hopefully they’re coming around.
I felt real emotions in that dress reveal.

I'm not sure the song can take the weight of the drama. However, the way they made this a duet (the original is a duet, but with a different balance, I think) was clever. The singers/actors blended well and did a great job.
I won’t tell you you’re wrong because this is your opinion. At the same time, I think this song is great because for this scene because it isn’t all drama. Even though Em’s mom wasn’t accepting, Em still got to experience some joy and very obvious relief from being their genuine self and maintains hope after doing something she thought was “impossible.” This song didn’t take away from the drama, but it also didn’t allow the audience to forget the happy and uplift parts of the scene.
I think I might have found why our perceptions of the original song differ. I am thinking of the 1957 and 1965 TV versions. You might be thinking of modern stage versions, which have expanded on the original and added layers.
@@Arkelk2010 Yeah that might be it. I was thinking of the song in general, not a specific rendition or scene.

Or Broadway Reimagined!
Now imagine THIS was Bad Cinderella
A non binary Cinderella would be an amazing version, since they are making so many versions why don’t they make a full LBTQ+ version?
