Peter, without doubt you are one of the best whisky reviewers I have come across. Always very descriptive and informative. Look forward to your videos every couple of days. As a Aussie lover of bourbon I'm envious of you and the varieties you have. Keep up the great work mate!
We get an ok choice of popular brands. Some are watered down, eg Buffalo Trace is sold here in big box stores at 40% abv. We have to search harder and pay a lot for bottles that you guys probably trip over in stores.
Nice video, very interesting comparation! I just got my first KC9 and I was drinking it while I was watching the video. I'm new into bourbon and didn't loved it, i don't dislike it, but couldn't find anything special. I liked Woodford Reserve DO or Four Roses SiB better. I would like to try the KC12 and KC18. Regards from México
Once you can tolerate higher ABV I would recommend trying the KC9 Single Barrel Select. It has much more depth and flavor than the normal 9 year. Cheers!
You just described exactly what I experienced after I first tried KC 12..!!! That dusty over oacked peanut nose/palate is the reason I avoid Jim Bean products.
A matchup I have done and my results were the same. I do like older bourbons. I know a lot of people aren't fans of the oakiness. However, I enjoy it if done right!
I regularly drink Knob Creek 9 and haven't bought the 12 or 18 year. I have seen the 12 in my area - don't remember the price but whatever it was, I didn't buy it. I don't believe I've seen the 18. Thanks for reviewing these.
Terrific thoughts and comparison Peter! I’m sticking to excellent peated scotch these days as I limit alcohol to 60ml a week - just a dram for good health! So I choose what I really enjoy! Live your videos! Moderation is cheaper too!! lol!! 😂
Moderation certainly helps the pocketbook. As you know my pocketbook took a hit with the upcoming First Friday Flight Fight. I hope the September giveaway offsets the coast of the Craigellachie 17 and 23. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney Hope so too Peter! Yup the 17 and 23 are big hits to the wallet! I think you will enjoy them very much. Interested to hear your thoughts! Cheers!! 🙂
I'm going to put the 9 and the 12 into my blind samples and see how they do up against one another. I remember liking the 12 a lot more than it came across in this video.
This is super surprising to me. I've had KC12 blind and it helo up against a bunch of competition. Then again, everyday is different and every bottle is different.
The way the 12 came across in this video surprised me as well. I remember liking it way more. I'm going to try it again and see if it tastes the same. It could have been this particular day. We will see.
@@whiskeyisajourney another thing to be wary of is cork taint. I'm not saying that's what this is, but it's good to be aware of how it manifests in whiskey. Bourbon Real Talk had a good video on it awhile ago
Nice! Knob Creek’s are some of my favorite pours especially the store picks. The 12yr(57.00) is really nice! The 18yr is better IMO :) I get the 18yr from my store owner friend for (115.00) but usually it’s 250.00 or more. If I was paying full price I would stick with the 12yr. Cheers!
I went through a whole Knob phase a few years ago. Anytime i saw a Knob, I'd grab it. I thoroughly enjoyed them. But for whatever reason, i moved on. I still enjoy a good Knob, but I've got to be in the mood.
F my damn luck. Here I think I get lucky that I won a raffle to get the KC 18 year at retail and it gets beat by the KC 12 that is a little more available but much cheaper. I hoping the retest of the KC 18 year is more enjoyable. Appreciate the honest review. If it were me on screen I would not be anywhere near as composed.
@@TheReal_DeanDyeah, the 18 won for Peter on that day, though like people are saying in comments, it seams 95% of blinds pick the 12yr as the best KC ever, even over the SiB 120P.
Most reviewers say they get the over oaky bitterness from the 18! It is odd that the 12 would have more oak. Have you tried a pour of your 12 since? Any chance they got switched?

Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback. What's the bourbon scene like in Australia?

@@MattyS69 That is unfortunate. Especially if you like bourbons. I feel your pain.

Kc12 is one of my top 5 and I also like the 18, but everyones pallets are different. Thanks for the review!
I still need to taste these again to check to see if something was off with my palate.

That nutty note is hit and miss with me. Sometimes the sweetness balances it out and I like it or it's too much peanut dust and not enough sweetness.
A matchup I have done and my results were the same. I do like older bourbons. I know a lot of people aren't fans of the oakiness. However, I enjoy it if done right!
I tried these bottles again on different days and came up with the same notes. The 12 left a bad bitter, but drinkable flavor on the finish.

You're welcome. I need to try the 12 on its own. I think the 18 influenced it in a negative way.
Interesting. I liked my KC 12 a lot. Would love to get your review of the 18 stand alone at a later date.
I need to have them at separate times because I thought I liked the 12 a lot more than it came across in this video.
I have had Knob Creek 18 but wouldn’t pay the Canadian price for it again. Definitely harder to find! Cheers!!🥂
I don't think I'll get another 18 unless the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. And still I might not even get it.
@@whiskeyisajourney I absolutely understand Peter!

My go to is still the single barrel select. Love that bottle or at least my bottle.
Thanks!
Got you down for 1 more in August.
I think the samples got mixed up.
I will be tasting again. Not sure how they would have gotten mixed, but you never know.

The 18 did win the blind. I just think the 12 put a bad taste in my mouth that wrecked my experience with the 18. The 18 is a good bottle.
@@whiskeyisajourney oh it did? I have to rewatch and pay full attention. I was listening while working the first time. Sorry about that.

I haven't tried it since and I'm pretty sure they didn't get switched. I'll be trying them again this weekend to verify.
