  • We captured an interesting and unique dolphin behavior on video. Four dolphins were swimming along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 80-150 meters from the shore. The leading dolphin repeatedly lifted its body at a 45-50 degree or steeper angle out of the water, then slapped its body onto the water's surface before submerging and continuing to swim. This behavior can serve various purposes, such as expressing emotional states, getting the attention of other dolphins, or dislodging remoras. (A remora is a fish that attaches itself to a dolphin using a suction disc on its head, feeding on scraps from the dolphin's meals).
