It's interesting how similar this is to a tornado. You can see 'suction vortices' (whatever they're called when it's a whirlpool instead) forming around it and then dissipating. You can also see the actual spiral due to the rotation too.
Air behaves much like a fluid in many ways, water is used for visual demonstrations of airflow and such by a lot of colleges and scientists all the time.

I used to love swimming in rivers with fast currents but when i was like 14 i got caught in a whirlpool underneath a huge rock it made me sink and i could barely swim away definitely a scary experience
That's called an undertow, we were taught in boy scouts to get the hell away from undertows whenever we saw them, and sometimes you're not even able to see the undertow.
you might be thinking "oh its so small how could he drown in that?" its because the whirlpool goes DOWN. Its not getting killed by the whirlpool itself thats scary its the fact that the absence of water where water should be creates so much suction that youll be 200 feet underwater in seconds and you wouldnt have enough time to swin up
His suit had buoyancy but at minus 15 ft (give or take) it takes on the reverse effect and your suit becomes more and more dense and you'll descend much easier. Apparently his mistake was his dive into the water, a little deeper perhaps than usual, and then he'd be treating the whirlpool all the same as per, not noticing the fatal error error. So pair that with getting your legs grabbed by a man-made whirlpool makes me think 200ft in seconds is terrifyingly accurate. :O
My grandpa once told me that when he was younger, people used to swim in the river that is close to my neighbourhood (that river is now really filthy and you shouldn't really swim in it). He said that those whirlpools where so strong that many foreign people drowned there because they were not carefull. It's really sad just thinking about it... rip

A whirlpool functions exactly like a tornado instead of wind the water current is the physics in motion Edit: Unless the hole is over 500 feet wide you have no fear of being pulled into the deep dark ocean, fact is most whirlpool holes are no more than a foot wide with most being half that. For the vortex to fully hit the ocean bottom and connect, most are never more than 30 feet deep. If you do get caught, extend your arms and legs out like a jumping jack to slow your spin speed and that obstruction can pause the whirlpool for you to escape, if you keep your arms and legs in tight, you will spin down at very fast RPMs
When I see stuff like this I always imagine the swirl thing going all the way down to the bottom of the ocean, down to where there's some sort of crack or hole making the water do what it does, like a sink getting emptied, even though I know it's not like that... I imagine it being all dark and terrifying sea creatures being down there, waiting for something to go into the whirlpool... eurgh **shudders**
Just a note: This dude died after trying to do another video with swimming with a whirlpool. He got sucked into it and was dragged to the bottom of the place. People couldnt get to him in time. There wont most likely be any more vids from him.
He wasn't by himself at the time from what I read. Still a stupid thing to do. Water is a force that should never, ever be underestimated. People have been swept off their feet in ankle deep water. I am with you i had fobia of whirpools when i were little younger but i wouldn't even think of swimming close to it i would just watch it on safe distance
Fun fact: natural whirlpools, or maelstroms as is their actual scientific mumbo jumbo name, in most cases, aren't actually that threatening because they are meerly conflicting currents and will jsut jostle you around and, without actual undertow, will do little more than throw you off whilst swimming unless they are a VERY large maelstrom, which are currents you should NOT be swimming, boating, or in any way be in, anyway. Whirlpools like this one are just caused by suction, or a drain in simpler terms, which you shouldn't be swimming near because you don't want your foot getting caught while in water that goes over your head. Standard safety.
Nothing's gonna happen if I put my foot there. I bet I could break this phenomenal easily just by body slapping it and forcing it to spin the other direction.
"which you shouldn't be swimming near because you don't want your foot getting caught while in water that goes over your head." His name was Jacob Cockle. He actually died trying to get underwater footage of this whirlpool. Dan, tell that to his family. Look it up yourself if you want, you've got the name now.
Saki Betta To be fair, he was hopped up on drugs, and wearing a horse mask when he died.. and it wasn't the whirlpool in the video.. it was merely similar.
I don't think there is anything more terrifying than a hole in the ocean. Or a sinkhole. The idea of getting caught in one makes me physically sick just thinking of it.

Thank you
Useful and I am scared of whirlpools
Nothing's gonna happen if I put my foot there. I bet I could break this phenomenal easily just by body slapping it and forcing it to spin the other direction.
"which you shouldn't be swimming near because you don't want your foot getting caught while in water that goes over your head."
His name was Jacob Cockle. He actually died trying to get underwater footage of this whirlpool.
Dan, tell that to his family. Look it up yourself if you want, you've got the name now.
Saki Betta
To be fair, he was hopped up on drugs, and wearing a horse mask when he died.. and it wasn't the whirlpool in the video.. it was merely similar.
this is very cool in my opinion
whirl pools are like underwater tornados that’s why I think they are very cool in my opinion
Horrific but cool

That was stale my dude. At least you tried and 72 people found it funny.

NANI?!?!?!?!?
Bro I know it was a joke
Two currents go opposite ways and merge together just like how tornados and storms form
I don’t know but hey we share the same pfp
So there's a hole in the sea and two currents go in and that's how
OK DUMB
Imagine seeing a whirlpool and then just decide to jump into it O-O

Ovo No, i thought you're american, because american woman like to say "honey".
+злюка he did die from this: www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cornwall-22714382
злюка :-: a whirlpool usually doesn't last a year. He died a year after this probably in a different whirpool
when he dived I just wanted him to touch the little tornado ... to see him whirl around
