Yep the gold with black writing was really pretty identical to the SL,but was XL 70. 2 of my friends had them was still the identical motor,we could see no difference other than color. Seriously my SL beat the XL, only because mine was purchased a year old. The bike shop owner broke it in,rode it home for lunch, but pals with brand new Gold XL,never broke in properly, mine did 57 MPH
Had this same exact year and color bike back in 1978 or so. Rode it every day with three friends who had an XR75, and XR80, and a YZ80. The SL70 regularly whipped up on those bikes on an old abandoned construction site we would race on. My favorite memory is when the guy with the XR80 complained that I was beating him because my SL70 handled better, so we switched bikes and I lapped him on his own bike. Afterwards he said, "Your bike is slow!" I replied, "Then how bad do you suck to lose to my bike then?" It was great, those days were awesome I miss those times.
I worked for Beno years ago he was the best machinist and expert knowledge on British, Italian,German and American bikes and love riding and racing them.
That's my exact first bike, I'm 62 now I was 12 then, And U'er right I rode the Wheels of that bike , the XR 75 came out the next Year , but my SL was just as fast I used to send the XR guys home cry'en. Now I have a 74 xl 70 that runs real good., and I've got a 74 xl 350 to match , my Main bike is a pumped XR 650l, U know Y because XR'S Rule. Thanks from NOR-CAL.
I had a 1970 SL70, it was that yellow color. I repainted and rebuilt the heck out of it numerous times. I wound up stripping off the metal, painted it Elsinore red and put knobbies on it. It went from street to motocross while I owned it.
A friend of mine had a 1970 SL 70 back in the early 70s.He let me ride it and that was how I learned how to use a clutch and change gears. Two years later I finally talked my Parents into getting me one for my12th Birthday with the help of my Grandmother. It was a SL 100 though,a little more hp,weighed a little more, set up higher, bigger wheels and was faster.Loved that little 100 and rode it every day after I got through with my homework. It would still be a good little motorcycle to ride around town,if you were 5'8 or smaller and weighed less than 160lbs.It would run 63 mph on flat ground.
Unbelievable selection of excellence in motorcycles! Id love to buy almost every bike in the videos I watched. This Honda is what I've wanted since I rode one in early 70's and it's getting near the top of my list to finally get one. Looks more fun than my Ducati Superbike for riding around town.
I had a Canary Yellow SL and my brother had a Grey and Red XR75. We rode our bikes all summer everyday til dinner time. Our house was the house all the kids hung out at. Summers was in the backyard, swimming pool, etc. Winter was in my basement, regulated Pool Table, etc Anyway, later, my SL was STOLEN and it nearly destroyed me. Not so much the bike but it was a part of my Father who died when I was only twelve years old. A Sentimental journey and so heartbreaking. At my age now, I'd still own just because of that. I had the best childhood, we had everything and we weren't rich but my Daddy and Mother always found a way. I barely was saying mama and dada and I was on minibikes. We started on just a frame bike called a Stellar. We actually started it in the house and rode it through the living room then kitchen which led through the dining room then back through the living room. I had so much fun growing up. We then got a Go-Cart. It was a Red Frame cart. That we rode strictly OUTSIDE. Shortly after that was the SL and XR. I can ride ANY Motorcycle put in front of me. I took a ride on my older brother's Harley Davidson Softail. The only way to hold it up was to just GO. I LOVE RIDING and I'm so grateful that I can. Thank You Mom & Dad. You were the GREATEST!!
This was the same bike my cousin had right around 2000. Color and everything. I had a 78 Yamaha GT80 2-stroke and for the most part, I was able to walk all over him. Exception being, one time our dads decided it'd be neat to take a shortcut down the boulder-strewn face of a g****mn mountain, only to find a barbed-wire fence at the bottom. I couldn't make it back up on the 80. My older cousin couldn't make it up on his Suzuki 100. My uncle only barely made it up on his DT-125. But no one bothered to tell Mark that he couldn't make it. That SL70 roared like Mert Lawwill at the Indy Mile and he proceeded to whiskey-throttle that thing right up the face of the mountain, throwing rocks and boulders and bushes and rattlesnakes thither and yon. I do believe it even gave a firey bang out the exhaust when he finally did let off at the top. We were all very impressed, though the sisyphean clutch-slipping trudge up the mountain was definitely effective at dulling my enthusiasm.
Holy crap my first bike...….it was basically a barn find when I got it. Took us a day to get it running and I rode it every day for a good year. That engine will run forever. Mine was yellow btw.
This was my second motorcycle. I had a Yamaha Mini Enduro, first. Then some friends of ours had bored out there little Honda 80cc to 100cc. It really ripped when I was 9 years old! Great bike! Much more reliable than my Yamaha. I learned to Work on engines because that thing fouled so many spark plugs! The Yamaha would leave me sitting. By the time my dad came back for me I nearly I had it fixed, thanks Yamaha.
Memories! My first bike in 1972. One thing though. That’s not the original air filter. The original had a foam rubber filter that was behind the right side cover, connected to the carburetor by a black hose.
I have a a 72/73 sl350 3erd owner low mileage needs some loven but not a lot . Love the bike and enjoyed riding it years ago and need to get off my ass and going .
I had one always regret selling it way too cheap. but i built a replacement for it with a rockford tora and chinese 90cc thats pretty close if not better for my purposes
My god we used to give these things away? I have 3 old mini bikes 1969 Taco99 mini bike. 1970 Taco22 . 1973 Bonanza CR400. I'm rich!!! What will you give me for my bikes?
Mine must have been 71 or 73,it was better looking was Red with yellow flag on gastank, was 72 cc, beat the Yamaha 80 that was also 72 cc,the liars at Yamaha tried to pass a 72cc off as a 80
My first bike at 7 years old in 1972. Memories . .
First bike for me at 8 years old in ‘89.
It was a hand me down from my brothers.
Every time I ride my TW I think of that bike.

My first bike 1971 SL70.
I learned to ride motocross track in one of those (gold color) back in the 70's . Very good responsive bike by Honda.

My Dad modified one of these for one of his workmates son's in 72 that raced scrambles. Hot cam and it ran on methanol..
I had that exact bike same color too!!
Them side covers even in the 90s where a very hard part to find on a sl70. Great find.
The one I rode in the 80s was missing one, lol.
Bet that thing is reliable.

My first bike was an XL70.
