So a slight caveat.... any firmware updates require the Charge Case it seems and the USB power thing is seen as an anomaly (w/r/t firmware updates). Is there a way around this? Otherwise you're pretty much stuck with the current firmware that's loaded.
I was so close to pulling the trigger until a friend cautioned me regarding the same issue. He said you have to use a charge case to activate the camera, I'd like to know if it can be done using the charge mount.
@@PK3DNow actually yes you can use the USB charger thing mentioned in this video to activate it. That's how I got mine to work ( don't think that has changed). However, firmware remains something I can't update and that wasn't mentioned at all. One other item to mention is that without the charge case, the Go2 is easily tapped if bounced around or stored in a pocket or something and you press it by accident. I've had my Go2 with close to no battery and/or storage almost full due to it recording 10 minutes of my pocket.... Just something to think about. Do I regret it? Nope. I saved money and at the moment can live with the consequences. Would be good to have this all fleshed out though beforehand rather than finding out $300+ later.
@@JonFloFPV good to hear it can be activated that way, however I ended up going with a caddx peanut for $239. Not $179 + adapter but it had a few features I liked better for my primary usage on a drone.
@@JonFloFPV The Go2 Will not allow you to connect without updating the firmware first. Once there's an update your device will no longer work until you buy the charge case.
I just ran into this issue actually. Hoping I can still use it as an fpv camera and download the videos to my desktop. However now I’m locked out of changing settings or downloading and video to my phone until I update… which I can’t without the charging case. This should have been brought up as it would have changed my purchasing decision had I known this would be an issue.
Hi Fun Versus Fun. You can use the power mount which has a gopro mount, or you can use any number of mounts for the regular insta360 go 2. Some of those mounts use gopro, others use mounts like the M2 (1.5mm).
Wait waaaaaht!? I've been looking for a way to get the Insta360Go2 for cheap (ever since I wrecked my Insta360Go.... still use it though!!). This is awesome. My main use is FPV but would love to just use it barebones for personal stuff also.

Wow, thanks Mic for this, as I was just about to buy another full GO 2. I was thinking I needed just another camera for events that last longer than 1/2 hour and this will be my remedy. This way I don't need to carry the extra weight of the case but 2 of these cameras at around 27 grams ea.
I got the insta360 go2 and power mount but Im unable to connect to my phone. my phone app states that I need to install the camera in the charging case to connect to phone by bluetooth. Am I doing something wrong?

USB power Mount is also how users can still use Go2 if the remote/ charge case falls in to the swimming pool or lost in the Snow Also great to shoot inside The car for longer time lapses and Even on motorcycles! I use the USB power Mount quite often like this and really recommend getting One or two 😁 if you like me have motorcycle and car fitted with usb charging port ✌️✌️
Good question! It is hard for me to test because I don’t have a TPU mount with GoPro mount. I only have TPU mounts with the Geprc cinelog mount. So all my quads one or the other but not both. But fwiw I don’t get jello on the Nazgul.

The power mount I ordered is on the way. But this is what I tried. I took the Go 2 out of the charge case, then closed the charge case and tried to connect with the phone app. The app asked me to press the connect button of the charge case. So it looks like I am not able to start the camera without the charge case. 🤔
Hi Matt. If you don’t have the charge case and it asks you to confirm the connection, you can just press the shutter on the camera. It will also work as confirming the connection.
One problem - it appears that I’m unable to update firmware on the GO 2 without the charge case… power mount is not enough on its own. - The app says “something is not right” and won’t exit firmware upgrade screen making it impossible to use the camera 😢
Same problem here. I like the cam and ordered it after you said it's working as stand alone. I'm using the charging mount in an fpv plane. Wonderful! The App is now stopping the connection to the cam as soon as I close the update massage. Insta360 support is no help so far. They say I need the case. But the case alone is not available right now. I'm still in contact with them and complaining...
I had contacted Insta360 via Chat. Their technical support doesn't know any solution for updating the camera without the case. They told me Zhe standalone is a accessory. It's listed in that category. So... My bad. I was offered a charging case, standalone, with 10% discount. Better than nothing but no big offer.
Hi MFR FPV. it seems like it might, but it was designed to fit the caddx peanut, which is slightly larger than the Go 2, so it might not attach securely to the Go 2. I think you're better off with the Insta360 power mount.
Great video, thanks! Unfortunately no ND filters in this set. I think for the drone use the Peanut is more convenient and complete. I would really like to see insta360 come with a software update with the same setting possibility as with Gopro, that it remembers the settings. It resets the manual setting every time when it's turn off and that sucks. Every time paired with your phone consumes a lot of battery you definitely need the drone's power supply. (I have the peanut)

Great question! The charge case can charge the other go 2 but I think you can pair only one go 2 at a time. I don’t know how to pair it with a second go 2.
This is great news. You have complete control and choice of what you can buy. It took a while. Wonder if they will do the same when they release GO 3. Will it be at launch or not. The draw back I see is that it can be confusing to « ordinary » consumer. He first need to understand the specs of the camera, then needs to figure what package/bundle he needs then you tell him you can the camera only!? he will obviously have all sort of doubt and questions. This make his decision longer and not even buy it at the end.

This came in handy for me as I lost the camera unit a coup,e of months ago when out on a bike ride. Don’t understand how, was using a thinner jersey than usual so the magnetic force to the pendant should have been stronger. Unfortunately it was lost somewhere on a 2 hour ride before a cafe stop before I noticed it was missing. Being able to buy the camera unit on its own was helpful, just wish I could have bought the 64gb version. Need to look at attaching a thin safety tether to the camera which won’t interfere with popping it back into the charging case.

Surprising I lost it really, I’d been out for maybe 30 rides or more with a much thicker jersey - thicker material =less strong magnetic bond you’d expect. Put it down to [expensive] experience. I think given how inexpensive the little screw on lens protectors are for the Go2, I might just try a tiny bit of hotmelt and a thin tether….
Have you tried connecting to the go 2 with the insta360 mobile app? The mobile app can connect to the go 2 without the charge case. But I'm not sure if it can update the go 2 without the case.
What Insta360 needs to do next is make a "probe lens-style" camera about the size of the Go/Go2. I'm sure a lot of creators would flock to this camera instead of plopping down over a grand for the Laowa probe lens.
Great video. I was waiting for this. I was able to buy the camera plus the USB mount only last month. It was out of stock earlier and now its also out of stocks again. However i realize battery life dies fast and its not really conveneint carrying a power bank to charge the camera. I also could not update the firmware as it seems it needs the charging case I guess, or I was missing something. But yeah, in the end I ordered a separate charging case and it really makes a lot of difference and convenience . I was lucky to get the last stock for now of the case. Thanks for sharing this video.
I got one charge case wet, so bought another, it's now DEAD too. Can't find the USB Mount anywhere to buy. So, I now have TWO working GO 2 cameras that I can't charge or use. Waste of £700. 😭 Bad design all round really. The cameras should be independently chargeable.
The $299 deal is still better, IMO. I like the accessories and everything bundled. Also, having 2 options in case your phone isn't charged or something like that happens

Hi sorry no the battery cases are different. The go2 will not fit in the go1 case. I believe there will be a go3 eventually but I don’t know when.

Hi George. When it prompts you to press the button on the charge case, press the shutter on the Go2. It will be detected by the phone.

You didn't answer one fundamental question: Can you record and charge at the same time for longer play times?
You can record and charge at the same time. The limit is not power but overheating or the built in memory.

Sorry to hear that buddy. Another option is to use a GoPro style chest mount. It will be more secure than the magnetic mount

The only problem I have its that you cant update firmware on the go2 without the case, just to let you know.
